Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars brutal metal at its finest.......2006-12-22

I think I did something right when I bought this CD by Blood Red Throne.
normally, Florida is where you find brutal death metal (e.g. Deicide and Morbid Angel) but can you believe this band is from Norway? while not like Deicide, this is more Morbid Angel worship. I cannot wait for the new album that BRT is releasing in 2007. it should be a bomb.

4 out of 5 stars Solid and brutal death metal. Nothing more, Nothing less........2006-05-21

Blood Red Throne's previous two albums didn't grab my attention, but I must admit I haven't given them much of an opportunity to do so. I seem to recall the old school production and in particular the guitar sound was not to my liking. "Altered Genesis" has changed everything, and I plan to go back and give the other two albums another chance. This is polished, tight and kicking death metal that still takes a glance back at the early 90s, but sounds very modern at the same time.

Considering Tchort (Emperor, Green Carnation) is a member of Blood Red Throne, I always expected the band were capable of writing proficient music, and one listen to album opener "Incarnated Mangler" justified this expectation. There are riffs aplenty here, with awesome drumming and very suitable (if not exceptional) death vocals. Things are mostly mid-paced and I'd have to say the easiest comparison would be Cannibal Corpse or even Deicide. Even though I find it difficult to find anything particularly original about this album, I find myself enjoying it very much. Tracks like "Mephitication" and the title track are brutal and excellent examples of death metal created by experienced exponents. There really isn't much else to say about this. I'm sure you already know whether "Altered Genesis" is for you or not. If you're a fan of Florida death metal, then pick up these Norwegian's latest effort without question. If you're after something original or highly technical, look elsewhere.

This is turning out to be a good year for death metal fans and we're only getting started. With albums from Lost Soul, Immolation, Blood Red Throne and Belphegor already giving us reasons to mosh and be merry.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect blend of old and new .......2005-12-09

Blood Red Throne have managed to craft a death metal album that sucessfully incorporates the best elements of new and old school death metal into one killer album. Modern death metal has its strengths- incredible technicality, unheard of speed, crystal clear production, and unrivaled brutality. But if you follow the underground death metal scene, as I do, you will often find yourself missing those bands of old who managed to make death metal catchy and memorable. That's where Blood Red Throne comes in. The song writing on this album is very strong, and all the tunes are recognizable and distinguishable from eachother- on the level of brutal death metal* This is a rare death metal album whose songs get stuck in my head frequently. Don't worry, there's plenty of technicality and brutality to go around, but there are also hooks and catchy, groovy riffs. This is death metal that you can actually bang your head to (unlike nilem disgorge, etc. although I love them dearly, the music is just so darn fast you don't know what to do with your head!). These days it seems like the only death metal with any groove is the stuff with hardcore influences. Well, if you're like me and you hate to hear ANY core in your dm, here's your band! No core on this album...but you can bang your head to it!

The drums are great for this type of music, there are plenty of blast beats and double bass as you would expect, but also a lot of thrashy beats to keep things interesting. The guitar riffs are very catchy and varied- technical parts, simplistic thrash style headbanging sections, slightly more melodic sections (but by no means melodeath). The vocals are a good mix between brutality and clarity, and fit the music very well. The vocals contribute to the songs rather than just being a series of gurgles and burps on top of the music that serves no real purpose except for "brutality." At times the vocal lines are very memorable, especially in "Arterial Lust." The bass is fantastic. Yeah that's right, I just described a death metal band as having a fantastic bassist. You know, that instrument that you usually can't even hear in death metal but you figure must be playing because there are 5 people in the band? Well, this guy can really play. There are times on the album where the bass player is playing arpeggios while the guitars are doing something completely different. It's very refreshing to hear this in DM.

Another thing I like about this album is the production. It's very clear but not overproduced, giving the album an organic overall sound that I really enjoy.

*I wanted to address the 3 star reviewer briefly. While all of his opinions are valid, I feel he underestimates what BRT brings to death metal. If you don't typically listen to traditional death metal, this may not be the album for you. If you're looking for bands that reinvent the genre or use it as a springboard to explore other territories, like Opeth or Necrophagist for example, then this may not be for you. But the comparison to BRT is not quite accurate, because bands like those don't play brutal death metal. If you're a fan of the underground death metal scene, you will love this. I've heard a lot of generic death metal bands and believe me, this isn't one of them. If you don't generally listen to death metal you may find these songs identical to one another, but those accustomed to the genre will find the songwriting excellent, as I do.

I own a LOT of death metal, and this is one of the best albums I've heard. Very well written and memorable. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars 3 and 1/2 stars. Musically impressive, but doesn't impress as do top artists in the genre........2005-09-11

When I first heard of Blood Red Throne, I immediately thought of one of the horrible bands the other reviewer here mentions. I, don't know, the name conjures up images of the weak and plentiful bands that make the MSN.com top 20 bands that are bringing back rock music (ala As I Lay Dying).

Blood Red Throne is not one of these bands.

These guys play technical death metal at blistering and unwavering speeds. Still, the relentlessness sometimes leads to stagnation, and as a whole, the album just isn't that memorable.

That isn't to say this album doesn't have its share of worthwhile listening. In fact, tracks 5-11 breathe a breath of fresh air during the latter part of the album, but other than track 5, not a single song is solid the whole way through.

What works well during this stretch are a few impressive solos (State of Darkness) not present on most of the album, the exploding sound of the bass on tracks like "Smite" and "Deliberate Carnage", and sparks of progressive death metal in the vein of Gorod and Necrophagist in "Ripsaw Resentment".
The ending stretch of this album also suggests Morbid Angel as a major influence.

Too many passages, however, are unable to assert any level of originality. Blood Red Throne has thrust this album into the category of metal albums that will remain respected, but mostly unlistened to because it does not succeed in giving the listener anything undeniably its own, which in no way could be heard anywhere else.

Still, metal fans who crave new music, or metal fans who collect massive amounts of music should by all means check this out. Myself, I prefer metal that is a little more melodic (though still extreme) or outright weird. Those who like their metal to be non-stop extreme (though still coherent), just may find themselves a five-star album in Altered Genesis.
