5 out of 5 stars Masterful work from Uli!.......2001-12-05

How in the world anyone would rate this CD as one star is just amazing! True, there are a couple classical numbers that I find less enjoyable than the remainder of the songs. But to say Uli plays them in a mediocre fashion is just bull! He's friggin brilliant.
Uli plays an awesome version of Voodoo Chile here as well as a great updated recording of his classic Earthquake. These are great songs, but it is the very diverse and masterful quality of the other 23 numbers that gives this collection such listenable staying power. TSG is a profoundly impressive listen for any true Uli fan. Check it out and enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Skeletons in the closet ý maybe they should be left thereý.......2001-08-11

Uli is as good as any guitarist when he is at his best. Prologue to the Symphonic Legends and Beyond the Astral Skies are two of the greatest CDs ever made. It is as if Mozart and Jimi Hendrix had a kid and the kid was Uli.

Unfortunately this CD is a bizarre mish mash of junk Uli has recorded over the years. Some of it is interesting, like the first song, but a lot of it is boring, like the classical covers. Like the other reviewer said, who cares if Uli can do a mediocre rendition of a Vivaldi piece on the electric guitar. If you can't play it extremely well, or you can't do something innovative with it (other than just playing it on the electric guitar), you are better off working in your home studio doing the sequel to Prologue to the Symphonic Legends.

Uli is not the most productive musician around, with just three CD releases in the last 16 years. Let's just hope he is hard at work on his second symphonic masterpiece. Then all will be forgiven.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Guitar.......2003-03-30

Uli Jon Roth has always been an amazing guitar player. At times he mistakenly thinks he's a singer. On this album the singing is kept to a minimum and it's all for the better. From the opening song to the last, Uli displays an extreme mastering of the electric guitar. From violin like runs, to hendrix like soul, Uli does it all, serving as a reminder he came long before Yngwie. As the title sugests he transcends guitar...this album left me speechless. If you are looking for "songs", buy one of the older Scorpion albums. If you want guitar, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Uli Raises The Bar For Guitar Virtuosity.......2000-10-28

Uli Jon Roth's new cd, Transcendental Sky Guitar, raises the bar of guitar virtuosity so high that it is unlikely to be surpassed. The compositional and technical prowess displayed on TSG is nothing short of amazing. I was in tears one moment and shouting for joy the next. There is an ever present powerful flow of spirituality combined with technical genius that is executed flawlessly time and time again. The emotional impact of his playing has never been stronger. From the opening "Sky Overture" to the closing song, "Air De Bach", Uli runs the gamut from Jimi Hendrix' "Voodoo Chile" to classical masters Chopin, Mozart and the aforementioned Bach just to name a few. He executes each of these styles with unparalled accuracy and emotion. The emotional impact of his playing cannot be understated. In all, this is a masterpiece of guitar work that cannot be ignored. I stand in awe of this musical master.
