The lineup is different. The record company is new. But vitriol-tongued Dave Mustaine remains Megadeth's constant. While more commercial and mature than unbridled early releases such as So Far, So Good . . . So What!, this follow-up to the poorly received Risk finds Megadeth mostly back to their metallic roots. Mustaine continues to alternately mine politics and self-reflection to good effect, and his solos still shred. The taut, hooky "Moto Psycho" is polished, millennial thrash, and though the rest of the material on this 12-song collection isn't as instantly memorable, it's certainly ambitious. Mustaine's biting vocal and the muscular musicianship of the powerful title track and the pained love-lost ode "1,000 Times Goodbye" hit the mark, as does the epic, string-laden ballad "Promises," though Mustaine's patented vocal seems out of place, as does the classical guitar on "Recipe for Hate . . . Warhorse." That said, old-school fans will worship the likes of "Moto Psycho" and the classic and brutal "Dread and the Fugitive Mind" and "Return to Hangar." --Katherine Turman

2 out of 5 stars Megadeth's worst album.......2007-01-20

This album had the worst lineup in the history of Megadeth.

Songwriting hit bottom.

No really outstanding riffs.

Solos lacked taste.

It was an effort that was focused on putting in more palm muted notes, more notes in solos, more bass drumming, and the result was really contrived.

The lyrics are the worst by Mustaine. It doesn't help that he speaks out a lot of them as well. "I've got a recipe for hate... taste it!!!" Cringeworthy.

Not a return to form, that came after with 'The system has failed.'

Relative favorites: 1000X Goodbye (which suffered from additional editing after the original album entitled 'Capitol punishment' was leaked), 'Dread and the fugitive mind,' and 'Burning bridges.'

Lyrically, the best is probably 'When' (only after the pathetic spoken word).

5 out of 5 stars Megadeths best album.......2006-10-01

I am a huge Deth fan. I really was disappointed with Risk. Now after Hero was released a feew years ago I stil listen to it and it grows on me. I really think that this is their best work, yes even better tahn RIP or Countdown. It is very varied, angry, yet atchy and happy. Maybe this is not the best album to get to know Deth, but it rocks once you know where the guys are coming from.

4 out of 5 stars If I gave this album a 5-star, I would be misguiding you........2006-06-07

If you are a person who wants to get into Megadeth but has little knowledge of the band, here's some history about this album. The World Needs A Hero came right after Megadeth's lowest point "Risk" and directly before the popular album "The System has Failed." Let's say that you've heard the most popular 'Deth songs and liked them, but the first cd by Megadeth that you bought was Risk. If that's the case, then "Hero" is gonna be your favorite cd. However, if you bought all their classics such as RIP, Peace Sells, and Countdown, then this is gonna be lower on your list. My point is that if I gave it a 5-star rating, that would be very misleading. A four-star is a good cd, and that is what "Hero" is. Do not get me wrong; it's got alot of good songs, good riffs, and sweet solos, but it doesn't impress the listener like other great cd's by Megadeth. So overall, it's a solid, good album. My views on it are more than less postive.

Disconnect, Dread and The Fugitive Mind, Return to Hanger, Burning Bridges, Promises, 1000 Times Goodbye: These 6 songs are the best on the cd and are flat out great Megadeth gems. While "Promises" is a slower, more rythymically inclined ballad, it's a really moving, powerful Megadeth song with great vocals and different instruments (i believe a violin and some keyboards) thrown in; it deserves at least an 8.5. Burning Bridges, Dread and The Fugitive Mind, Disconnect, and Return to Hanger are probably the top four on the album. Disconnect has a VERY catchy riff during the verses and a great sing-along chorus. Dread and the Fugitive Mind is just a straight-forward, rocker with an addictive chorus and an awesome start/stop riff during the verses. (Check out the sweet double-bass pattern after the second chorus). Burning Bridges has an interesting, kind of (in my opinion) egyptian-like intro, that turns into a really sweet riff and vocals during the verses. Also has a really catchy chorus. Return to Hanger will take you back to Rust in Peace days as it is a fast, thrash-like, metal rocker that has similiar mucic structure and vocals like Hanger 18 did. Well done solos and fast riffs during the interludes are some of the highlights in this rocker. All four of the hits listed above are all very outstanding, "back in business songs", that are rated at least 9/10! One of the greatist hits off the album, 1000 Times Goodbye, starts off with a really cool riff, followed by thundering drums, that get more and more complex and the riff continues. After the sweet intro, the verse kick in and make for a very enjoyable song. The only thing that is kind of annoying in this song is the dialogue between a random girl and Dave THROUGHOUT the song, not just at one part. It's pretty irritating the first couple of times you listen to it, but if you just learn to listen past the dialoge (as i did) then you can hear the sweet solo that is being played in the background. Besides that little flaw, this boy gets a 9/10. Moto Pycho, The World Needs A Hero, Losing My Senses, When, and Recipe for Hate...Warhorse are the five songs that definetly should not be overlooked, but are not as "up-to-par" as the other Megadeth hits. Moto Pycho is a song that I truly like and think is quite good. It starts off with a sweet riff that turns into cool lyrics during the verses. When I first heard this song, I thought the chorus was irritable, but now that I've listened to it many times, it's quite catchy. Dave's voice is alittle morphed (either that or he's singing different), but it's not all that bad. Still a nice 9/10 for the album, but not good enough to be in the top six. "Hero" isn't a horrible song as many reviewers have oppositely stated. It is quite weak for a title track, but it starts off with a sweet fast riff and really good bass and drums. The verse lyrics are pretty cool, but the thing that kills this song is the little "operator talking to DAve part" right before the also weak chorus. The song picks up however alitle ways through and included are fast rifs and sweet solos. Still, overall the song is a 8/10. Losing My Senses, at first listen, did not appeal to me because the vocals and guitar don't really go together, but now I see that that little "sycopation" is what is interesting about the song. It's got an interesting chorus with sweet overlappeing guitar. However,it's still middle-of-the-line and gets about a 7.5-8/10. Recipe for Hate stars off cool but then the verses are more/less said by Dave rather than sang. The music is cool during the little "story" though. This first part gets about a 7/10. Then Warhorse kicks in, and it gets very good. It's a fast-paced rocker with good guitar, drums and bass. Love the vocals too. This second part gets a 8.5/10. When starts off really strange and sort of creepy, because Dave is just raging (talking, not singing) about being betrayed or somethng along those lines. After a while though, the song gets really sweet, faster, and DAve actually sings. Not a bad closure to the album at all and it deserves at least a 8.5/10. Silent Scorn is a 1:42 instrumental which isn't as impressive as "Into the Lungs of Hell" but it's not horrible. It's got waht sounds like a trumpet or something at the the end which is different. >So with that, you can see that while "Hero" has alot of good points, it also falls flat in many other cases. The songs are definetly a STRONG step in the right direction as far as getting back to the good 'ol thrash days, but they're not quite there yet. All I ask is that you listen to this album with an open mind, finding and listening to the good points rather than focusing on the bad ones, and knowing in your mind that Dave Mustaine and the boys worked hard to reverse their past mistakes with "Risk" in giving us fans a solid, honest-to-God, metal album. However, like other reviewers have said, if you're just getting into Megadeth get a classic, but if you're a diehard fan get this bad-boy.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-04-02

This album was hailed as a return to form after the disaster that was Risk, and it partially succeeds. There are some heavy cuts here, and nothing blatantly commercial or made for radio. But the songs don't hold up to those on any of the albums up through Cryptic Writings. My favorites are When, Dread and Fugitive Mind, and Burning Bridges, but I wouldn't include any of these songs in a list of Megadeth's top 20 tracks. There are no classics, no unforgettable hooks or riffs. This album is for Megadeth completists only (that's the only reason I own it). Anybody else should start with Peace Sells, Rust in Peace, or Countdown to Extinction.

4 out of 5 stars Take a few tracks off and it would be a 5 star performance.......2006-04-02

Ahhhhhh, a return to form. This album sounds a lot like So Far, So Good, So What! Instantly memorable tracks are Dread and the Fugitive Mind (my favorite on the album), Return to Hangar (just as many solos as Hangar 18), Moto Pyscho, and When, which has a Call of the Ktulu intro and gets very heavy towards the end.

Other songs that aren't as memorable but are still good include Burning Bridges, Silent Scorn (an eerie instrumental with trumpets), Promises (soft ballad with violins, not very Megadeth but still good), and Disconnect.

Songs that we don't need to hear: 1000 Times Goodbye, which is completely ruined by some stupid dialogue between Dave and a girl, Recipe For Hate... Warhorse (boring), the title track (boring), and Losing My Senses, which is not a bad song, it just isn't special.

5 out of 5 stars Return to Megadeth.......2001-05-25

Megadeth has brought back the true rythm to music in this collection of artistic talent. I never thought anything could be better than Cryptic Writings, but the many different songs on this album are amazing. Dave's vocals and licks backed by Al and his licks is amazing. What melodies. Disconnect offers a fantastic way of perfoming a solo byusing awesome guitar sounds before it kicks in. Motophsyco is the return of songs like She Wolf, or Symphony, in my own opinion. Promises is a superb ballad that puts every other artists songs into the back seat. Even if you don't like Megadeth, you will like this song. Recipe for hate is performed sort of like the way Holy Wars, how the song rolls into the next. Silent Scorn is a rythmic melody in which Dave performs a solo backed by a trumpet or horn. The title track has awesome guitar affects too. Megadeth returns to spead metal, not much of the beginning stuff, but more like Rust In Peace and Countdown. This is by far, the greatest Megadeth album today on the shelves. I pity anyone who doesn't pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Megadeth Strikes Back.......2001-05-15

5 years ago I started hearing Megadeth... It was at home on my ghettoblaster... The album was Countdown To Extension, and damn! It was good! Now I have been a collecter of Megadeth since that time, and now they are out with a new album. The world needs a hero is a true masterpiece! The World Needs A Hero have some common traits with albums like Countdown to Extension, Rust In Peace and a little of cryptic writings. Peace Sells but whoes buying has also a little influence on the album. The album; World needs A Hero is a true comeback from the masters of Speedmetal. With a new record company, manager and two new bandmembers, Megadeth is back to stay. The style of their music is fresh and newborn in a way that should be heard, and Dave Mustaine has been creative when it comes to lyrics. A great album for new and old fans of the beloved Megadeth. It's nice, as a old fan of Megadeth, to see the band with fresh energy. It's almost like they started all over again! So buy The World Needs A Hero, if you want to enjoy the pleasures of true SpeedMetal... It's a true masterpiece!

4 out of 5 stars New classic Megadeth.......2002-09-19

I missed this albums release in 2001, still bitter about "Capitol Punishment", and judging the album on the strength of "Moto Psycho" the single that was released where I lived.

What a mistake. This is Megadeth sounding much like they did circa "Cryptic Writings", very hard and heavy, doing what they do best. Not to say that "Risk" was bad, just different, and not at all like Megadeth.

Dave and company have gone back to the tried and true formula of old, hitting you over the head with a sledgehammer, and not stopping until you turn it off. Some favorites:

"Disconnect" which kicks the album off very well, and easily one of the best on the album.

"Coming Home", on the import is a rare Megadeth track, and easily justifies the extra cost of the import. Dave sings of coming home to Arizona over violin and mandolin, very rare indeed. See you there Dave.

I didn't like "Moto Psycho" the first couple of times that I'd heard it, but it kinda grew on me, so now I like it.

"1000 Times Goodbye" is a great rocker, and I particularly enjoyed the voice-overs. I'd tell, but that would ruin it.

"Promises" is a bit different than the usual Megadeth, in that it's much slower, with a lot of strings, and I'm not talking guitars. Good tune.

Like any album, there are some filler tunes, but Megadeth can make even filler sound good. Overall, this is Megadeth at the top of their game, and the addition of "Coming Home" makes this a must have for the Faithful, but even new fans will enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Megadeth returns in rare form!.......2001-06-01

The new disc has been highly anticipated because many dedicated fans felt the band's 1999 release "Risk" was not true to Megadeth's hard-hitting style. "The World Needs A Hero" is chock full of bone-crushing metal tunes that will keep listeners crawling back for more 'Deth again and again. Some memorable moments from the new disc include "Disconnect,"- a fantastic opening track containing a hypnotic riff; you will find your feet tapping to this one. "The World Needs A Hero"- a punch in the face as this song exhibits drummer Jimmy DeGrasso's amazing technique. "Promises"- A symphonic ballad that promises to become a classic; this track not only rivals Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" but slaps it in the face. "Return To Hangar"- the promised sequel to 1990's "Hangar 18" and also a return to the speed metal that made Megadeth famous. I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but if you're a fan of bands such as Metallica, AC/DC, Alice In Chains, or Korn you will not be disappointed by Megadeth's upcoming release. The album cover features Vic Rattlehead, the band's mascot, ripping out of front man Dave Mustaine's chest, signifying a return to Megadeth's signature style. Megadeth has been around since the early '80s, pumping out classics such as "Peace Sells ... But Who's Buying," "Trust," and the infamous "Symphony of Destruction." The band was recently featured on VH1's "Behind the Music," and as anticipated the episode documented the band's struggle with drug addiction, Mustaine's controversial expulsion from Metallica, and Megadeth's ever-changing line-up. Over the past 19 years co-founding members David Ellefson (bass) and Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitars) have employed a number of colorful personalities among their ranks. Currently, the Megadeth line-up has never looked better including the newly recruited guitar-virtuoso Al Pitrelli and drummer Jimmy DeGrasso. I definately recommend picking up this album- especially with the Japanese-only bonus track "Coming Home," which is a must have tune from Dave Mustaine and Co.
