Josh Groban in Concert has all the ingredients to be a long-running PBS staple: a young (21), good-looking performer with a golden voice; songs in Italian and Spanish for the crossover crowd (i.e., Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman) and pop and movie songs for the mainstream; guest stars galore (David Foster, John Williams, Angie Stone, Andrea Corr, Lili Haydn); a large orchestra; and striking but not obtrusive visual effects. The centerpiece of this DVD-CD combo (also available in a DVD keepcase) is the 80-minute concert DVD, filmed in Pasadena in October 2002 and featuring numerous songs from Groban's debut CD, including "You're Still You," which catapulted him into stardom when he sang it on TV's Ally McBeal. There are also two new songs--the ballad "Broken Vow," with Groban accompanied by Foster, and "For Always," with the orchestra conducted by John Williams, who wrote the song for the Steven Spielberg film A.I..
The 37-minute CD offers seven songs performed in the concert (including the two not on the previous CD, "Broken Vow" and "For Always"), plus "O Holy Night." The DVD has excellent picture and sound (PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS), interviews, and backstage footage, and the combination with the CD is an excellent value. Groban's fans, of course, will consider it a treasure at any price. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
In case you couldn't go to the concert. . ........2007-05-12
In case you couldn't go to the concert . . . buy this CD/DVD set. This is a good overall product. The DVD is seamlessly pieced together from three concerts. The concerts were awesome due to the lights, musicians, song introductions, and of course - Josh's voice, presence, and energy.
Young Josh .......2007-04-12
This cd and dvd collection is valuable to anyone collecting Josh Groban music. The dvd is nicely done and gives a little insight into his family (parents and younger brother) with the special features. Nice, clean, family entertainment which is such a rarity nowadays. This young man's voice is exceptional - God has truly blessed him with such a voice, and to see him perform is a gift as well. My family truly enjoyed this bonus.
The Best I've Ever Heard Live!!.......2007-04-10
He has the most beautiful voice!! I love seeing him live! Worth the money to hear him over and over again!!!
Josh Grobin DVD/CD.......2007-04-02
I ordered this concert DVD/CD for my Mom who is a new fan of Josh Grobin's and she loved both the concert footage and the songs on the DVD.
Fantastic concert....Josh Grobin is outstanding!.......2007-02-22
I have been a Josh Grobin fan since I heard "You Lift Me Up", and I have not been dissapointed with his CD's ever since. I was excited when I got this DVD and it definitely did not dissapoint. He chooses his songs wisely and each song in this concert is full of emotion and depth. The CD compliments the DVD well and is always a favorite. From "Broken Vow" to "Oh Holy Night" each song is sung by this master singer.
Highly Recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Bach and Handel Treats.......2000-08-04
The unfortunate thingÑif anything can be said to the contrary about this collectionÑis that is an older recording. As far as authenticity, what was available in the days of Bach and Handel to perform their music, and what they may have had in mind as the formidable way of presenting it to the publicÑas well as to the heavensÑmay be quite different things. Viewed in this way, authenticity may be an abstraction we are not here priviledged to comment on.
I have marveled for years, even when these were two separate LP's, of the power and dimensionality conveyed by the way these works are performed. I still switch from one to another piece as which is my favorite. In this respect, the experience is a hermenutic delight. Any lover or respecter of Bach or Handel would not go wrong by including this collection in their musical library.
When I use the word "treats" in the title, I mean just that: it is a collection of works that one would be hard pressed to find performed together on any available recording. And so I use the metaphor "treat," as if I were given a morsel and then devoured it; and another, and devoured that one, each with a fullness of pleasure and delight, and with soul filling satisfaction.
These indivdual recordings are for the most part masterpieces in and of themselves, and to be able to listen to them as they are performed flawlessly, and in a manner that invites the Spirit of GodÑby saying they are a "treat"Ñis to merely to treat them minimally.
Fine recording, but doesn't work for me........1999-05-07
I love several of J.S. Bach's cantatas, and enjoy hearing them in a variety of ways--period performances, orchestral arrangements, etc. Therefore I'm not one to insist on authenticity. Nevertheless, the chorus here sounds too big for the Bach. Also, the program needs more variety for straight through listening. Chorus after (massive) chorus doesn't work for me.

Amazing skills, yet too busy for listening enjoyment.......2006-12-13
I can't believe how well John Bayless has mastered the piano. This is very obvious from the first song that you ever hear him play. I'd really like to watch him play in concert. However, the songs on this album are too much work for me to listen to. The music is so busy that I can hardly concentrate on the melody and it hardly gives me the peace I expect from traditional Christmas music. Some of my favorites for this category are Jim Brickman, David Huntsinger, and Tim Janis.
John Bayless Christmas Rhapsody.......2006-02-13
Christmas Rhapsody has quickly become one of our all time favorite Chistmas CDs. We love it so much that it is February 10th and we are still listening to it.
best concert pianist in the world.......2005-08-18
John Bayless is the best concert pianist in the world. This album shows his genuis. Perfect music to listen to any time of the year.
This is the best Christmas album on the market.
My favorite of the season.......2004-12-31
This is the holiday music I have listened to throughout the season, and it is so beautiful I cannot bear to put it away yet. I love Bayless's work at any time, and these arrangements simply take my breath away. His blending of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with "Going Home" from the New World Symphony is particulary poignant. And his signature "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring/Amazing Grace" is seasonless and timeless. Christmas is over, but get this anyway; it's wonderful.
Best Piano Christmas CD ever!.......2004-12-15
David Lanz? Jim Brickman? John Tesh? Move over guys... John Bayless has done what no others could... Taken the xmas classics to a new level of musical enjoyment! By combining the songs together, and making them so rich and full of life, this will be my favorite Christmas CD for a looooooooooong time.

this was a very nice cd for quiet listening, but it did not inspire any emotional feelings.

Here's Your Chance to Hear the Masters and Masterpieces of Christmas Music in Superb Sound.......2006-01-08
Decca has come out with the "Ultimate" Series of albums, ranging from Opera Divas to Tango, from Patriotic to Relaxing Classical. I ordered this album last fall from a high school student in my neighborhood going door to door raising funds for her hockey team. I had no idea what the Christmas music was, I just wanted something relaxing. When it arrived in the mail I was delighted to hear favorites from my youth - Annunzio P. Mantovani, Frank Chacksfield (remember him?), and Ronnie Aldrich - all remastered in terrific sound! The liner notes are fun to read, providing a story for each carol and song. This generous album of 22 tracks runs a total time of 63:25, providing holiday ambience from Thanksgiving through New Years Day.

Another Gem From Waterson:Carthy.......2006-12-06
I always look forward to a new Waterson:Carthy recording because I love the genre of music they choose to record and I`m a big fan of their interpretive styles, skills and sound.
Their latest release, "Holy Heathens and The Old Green Man", is obviously a "Christmas' recording, but I use the word "Christmas" here with hesitation because the overall impression left by the work is much more expansive than the singlular idea of Christmas day. In the world of Waterson:Carthy, this time of year is time to have some merriment, some spiritual reflection, a look at one's moral compass, and to partake in some darn good music!
The choice of material is (as usual for this gang) truly inspired and it's hard to pick favorites. Martin Carthy's take on the unusual "Christ Made A Trance" and Eliza Carthy's reading of her uncle Mike Waterson's "Jack Frost" are two tracks that leave big impressions. Also Norma's leading of the troupe in the opening "Residue" makes for a grand entrance.
Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson have always appeared to be generous to those younger musicians following in their footsteps and it's never shown more clearly than here. Tim Van Eycken, who has been part of their group for the last few years, makes his farewell performance with them here. (He released a wonderful solo album just a few months ago.) His performance of "On Christmas Day It Happened So" is another high point of the recording. Van Eyken delivers this bleak, blunt song in a manner reminiscent of June Tabor's approach to this kind of piece - placing sentimentality in back of the notion of letting the story and song speak for itself.
Waterson:Carthy also introduce the trio The Devil's Interval into their fold for this recording. (The Devil's Interval didn't just appeared out of nowhere. They've recorded some well-done group and solo projects.) Their added voices give a new heft to the ensemble singing and they're given some prominence in some numbers as well. (Keep your eyes - and ears - on Jim Causley. He may have a nice career ahead of him in this early repertoire if he chooses.) They particularly leave a mark on the lovely "The Falling Tear" (or, as its more often called, "When Jesus Wept") by the late 18th century American hymnist/composer William Billings of Boston. This is certainly one of Billings more beautiful melodies (along with his "Africa") and the group does a fine job with it. (Boston, and New England in general, was a hotbed of the early American hymn in the late 18th century. This group of composers was the forerunners of the Sacred Harp school. Some may argue that assertion, but....)
Here one will also find some "Christmas songs" that they think they know, such as "While Shepherds Watched" and "The Cherry Tree Carol", but will find them much transfigured and exposed as to how they were probably tossed about in the old days. There's also a great performance of "Diadem" here that strips the piece of its "churchiness" and gives it back its earthy quality. It gave me goose bumps when I heard it!
Another American hymnist is tapped into for the closing. Ira D. Sankey's "Gloryland", led by Eliza, is not simply lovely, it's downright inspirational in its directness. Sankey, who could compose some lovely hymns (as well as his share of maudlin ones), is at his best here. "Gloryland" is not a well-known composition of his, but after hearing Waterson:Carthy's take on it, I imagine there will be people searching it out.
Anyway, if you love good music without pretense, schmaltz, or over production, then treat yourself this season to "Holy Heathens and The Old Green Man."

Christmas albums by opera divas hardly make an exalted genre. Usually they involve overblown arrangements, hackneyed material, and singers sight-reading music they don't particularly like and making lame attempts at singing in English. With all her integrity, Anne Sofie von Otter would never do such a thing, and she hasn't here. This disc is a personal, eclectic mix, with the mezzo-soprano sounding sincere and approachable by sticking to the lower end of her range using small-ensemble arrangements you might hear in an evening sitting around the fire. In fact, rarely has Otter sung with such warmth as in Pereic Moraeus's "Koppangen," accompanied by accordion, guitar, violin, and mandolin. Not only is her English good but she seems to connect with the language emotionally. Amid the cozy, jazzy renditions of "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" and "Silent Night," there are a few lapses into eccentricity, such as an atonal string ensemble arrangement of "White Christmas" that easily could've been done by Alban Berg, and some Nordic-language forays in which Otter seems to be getting in touch with her primitivistic Viking roots. With good taste displayed elsewhere, she's allowed. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Musically interesting Christmas alternative.......2004-12-09
I've been in charge of holiday music for the extended family for the last decade or so, and I generally buy a half-dozen or so CDs every year from a wide range of genres. This is perhaps my favorite of them all. It manages the almost impossible feat of engaging an audiophile like me who's looking for something different while simultaneously enthralling more tradition-minded family members. The CD stands out in most of the critical areas in the holiday field. First, the selection of songs is brilliant--a few English-language standards with some foreign-language songs people may know (Il est ne, le divine enfant) and a handful of really engaging Swedish tunes. Second, the spare but warm instrumentation conveys the coziness van Otter is seeking. Last, and most important, van Otter's low mezzo is put to incredibly expressive use. For those who are turned off by overly operatic recordings that sound completely alien from the renditions of carols that we know and love, this is a much more low-key, accessible form of art music.
This disc is worth buying for the first and last tracks alone, a haunting Swedish number that is now so much part of my Christmas that I can't believe I'd never heard of the song until a few years ago (one track is the Swedish version, the other an English translation). Much as I love holiday music, I have to say that this is one of the only holiday discs I'll listen to throughout the year.
Koppangen.......2004-10-18
Like another reviewer, I bought the CD solely for one song, Koppangen, which I had heard on a flight, and listened to over and over and over throughout the flight. It's a song that greatly moves me: the melody and interpretation. And yes I'd say for having a different sort of Christmas album to play during the holidays, this would be a good choice.
Jesus is born again!.......2004-01-10
I did never take my time to write a review but for the cd time is worth it.
This cd is superb. I also saw her concert with his cd life.
It gives you a old fasioned feeling of a warm /close Christmas.
Christmas with a heart.
With her voice Anne Soie does do magic.
She is classical singer number 1 !
It's my best Christmas cd!
Yopu will have a lot of good feelings with this cd,
It is really, really by far worth it's money.
What is money in this case...
Good Luck,
Peacefull Christmas,

Something different -- provacative, but very enjoyable.......2002-12-16
Home for Christmas is not your run-of-the-mill "listen to me, I'm an opera singer lavishing my gorgeous voice on these pretty Christmas songs" recording.
Anne Sofie von Otter's fans have long-since learned to expect the unexpected from this exceptional singer and, on this recording, now several years old, that's what she offers - the unexpected. With only a couple of exceptions, the songs are traditional Christmas fare, though usually with an added twist: the distorted rhythm that makes "Tomorrow will be my dancing day" really dance, or the jazz blue notes that take "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" to the cocktail lounge. (In this, as well as White Christmas, Ms. von Otter bears more than a passing resemblance to another great cross-over artist, the late Eileen Farrell.) In this free rhythmic treatment, Deck the Halls, arranged for accordion and violin accompaniment, is much less a fa-la-la madrigal than an introspective folk-song that builds on its own momentum. In contrast, the simple hymn, Beautiful tone Star of Bethlehem, which Ingvar Wixell recorded many years ago on his Christmas offering, shows Ms. von Otter's lush voice to full effect.
Her subtle use of vibrato in "I wonder as I wander" (along with a provocative arrangement) captures the Scotch-Irish influence on the folk music of Appalachians without being a condescending parody while the marimba accompaniment and fiddle obbligato to the French "Il est le divin enfant" evoke an unidentifiable folk music - is it Spanish or French countryside? Or, is the point that it is universal?
True, a couple of the arrangements stretch beyond my endurance: Although Ms. von Otter does lavish some beautiful tone on Cantique de Noel (O, Holy Night) I found the over-echoed, new-wave arrangement irritating and White Christmas, rather than being nostalgic verges on surreal.
In total, there are twenty songs, each a little gem of interpretation. As I mentioned above, sometimes I don't really like the interpretations or arrangement; however, I never doubt for a moment, that Ms. von Otter believes what she is singing; her commitment to communicating through music is never in doubt. By the way, her English diction is exemplary - a lesson for many singers for whom English is first language.
Great Christmas album.......2001-11-27
I have never been one to buy much Christmas music -- why bother when for the month of December I can hear the stuff everywhere I go whether I want to or not. So, it's a real treat to find a disc like this one that I just want to listen to over and over again. I bought it last year and it was kind of depressing when the season was over and I had to stop listening to it until next Christmas. Anyway, the other raves for "Koppangen" are spot on: it really is a very warm and moving song and I'm glad it appears twice on this disc. There are several carols that are unfamiliar to most English listeners (me included) but they soon become favourites. And even the weird arrangement of "White Christmas" with its minimalist and almost slithering string accompaniment grows on you after a while if only for its ability to amuse. Definitely a must-have for fans of Anne Sofie von Otter or those looking for something a little different.
