Following hot on the heels of their enormously successful collaboration for The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice have once again culled their talents to create another Disney contemporary musical, based this time on Verdi's opera Aida. The album, recorded by some of the biggest talents of pop, country, and R&B, features songs from the stage show, which recounts the well-known tale of a love triangle further complicated by slavery, royalty, and the armed forces. John duets to great effect with country crooner LeAnn Rimes, the enchanting Janet Jackson, and the lovely Lulu of To Sir with Love fame. Lush and lively, the soundtrack hits a hoot of a (decidedly not highbrow) high point with the infectious pop of the Spice Girls warbling the merits of undergarments on "My Strongest Suit" ("Always wear underwear/Anytime, anywhere"). Lenny Kravitz funks things up with "Like Father Like Son." Shania Twain's husky emoting makes a fine pop ballad of the brief "Amneris' Letter." "Not Me" chronicles the goodness of love as Boyz II Men coo dreamily, their harmonies nestling into John's sumptuous score. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2006-09-07

I'm so impressed with this album for several different reasons.
3) It's Elton John
2) I loved all but two of the songs!
1) I usually hate the original broadway cast albums and movie soundtracks. They don't do the songs justice. They usually have chopped up versions of the songs and include unnecessary dialouge.

I'd love to see every musical (broadway or movie) done this way!
I appreciate the b'way versions, but I don't want to listen to them in my car...

4 out of 5 stars good variety and feeling.......2004-06-24

This is a very good CD. "Written in the Stars" is an extremely emotional song, and it is my favorite on the album. I would like to see the show on Broadway, but I have to say I don't think it can be too much better than this CD

2 out of 5 stars Sour Concepts.......2003-06-29

It takes so much to try to get a musical to make its way upon Broadway. Sometimes you really need to understand how to make it really happen within the passion of the storytelling music. In that case with Elton John, he nearly seemed to make it with Aida. While the music for Broadway always seems to have at least something completely mgaical and a dash of power in it. Sometimes, you really need to understand it, to make it happen, and others don't see it from the start. Although Elton John has had great music for years, at least once in a era, something goes a little flat.

The 1999 Aida, was not a studio album from Elton, but a preview from what was happen on Broadway. The various artists record contains so many different artists in the record including Tina Turner, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, and the upcoming Heather Headley. Before Heather made it as a singer, she made it right here in Aida, on this record. The only decent song that was a hit was Written In The Stars, which Elton performed with Leann Rimes. The song was also the last song Elton cracked Billboard's Top 40. Still, there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment within most of the record, and it fell into a sleeper. Considering that Elton is already planning on making another smash musical on Broadway, hopefully he'll do better with the concept record.

When it does come to making it on Broadway, it isn't really anything exciting, unless it truly is a smash, and Aida is a smash on Broadway, just not the record. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Aida, buy this record. Otherwise, it could be a hitless miss.

5 out of 5 stars Living Elaborate Lives..........2002-11-02

Aida was Elton John and Tim Rice's baby, providing a concept soundtrack album before even setting the stage on fire, the tracks are generally sweeping show ballads.
Elton teams up with several lovely and talented ladies, in LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, and Lulu. "Written In The Stars" could be a vocal gladiator battle, the way LeAnn and Elton sing it. Janet and Lulu prove themselves as more mellow duet partners.
Kelly Price makes "The Gods Love Nubia" her own, the song is tied up in soul with her voice being smooth as silk. The far too short "Amneris' Letter" shows off Shania Twain's voice to perfection also. Pop culture phenomenon the Spice Girls turn "My Strongest Suit" into the most obvious pop stomper of this set. Another strong point is Heather Headley's solo "Elaborate Lives". A rich ballad, Headley recently embarked on an R&B singing career with the track "He Is". The legendary Tina Turner provides a fiery perfomance, her track being the powerful "Easy As Life" with Angelique Kidjo.
Duds are also present, Sting and Dru Hill's tracks are admitted stinkers. James Taylor, Boyz II Men, Sherie Scott, and Lenny Kravitz also deliver perfomances on the album. This album is well put together, with strong tunes and a short-list of superstars presenting them. A fun buy.

I too have been listening to the YG's since their beginnings (which now makes me officially an old git).

After a bit of a wierd wobble with the last album proper, all ambient an that. Then a taster of quality with the new track 'Secret' on their best of. This album is just totally amazing, I cannot take it off my ipod.

The vox are initially a bit different but they slip in nicely and add a bit of range to the YG sound.

Great album.... buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Crap!.......2007-05-03

I wish I had the time to write enough to properly do this album some justice...

I've been listening to the Young Gods since the start and have always thought their work was some of the most innovative out there. I didn't dislike their work on Second Nature and whatever album came after that but it just never quite measured up IMHO. This album more than delivers. The guitars are back along with distortion, lo-fi and the sonic secret sauce that ties it all together. The vocals and drumming are also top-shelf. I've been listening to it non-stop for the past two days. It just keeps getting better.

5 out of 5 stars My own life is behind these recordings.......2007-06-10

I can assure that one of the reason I love music is due to these recordings of Mr. Stokowsky. My father had the record of Scherezade and, though my father was an ignorant about cultivated music, he knew very well what to appreciate. We never argued when I played Beethoven's first symphony so loud, however, he always did when I played Rolling Stones so loud. I adore that he taught me to appreciate Rimsky-korsakov's music as well as Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Spagnolo so young. He was wise, on his way. I can't help to cry for him, listening to Borodin's Palatsovian dances, because, it is great music, and, having into account that I used to love it by Mr. Stokowsky's work, it doubles my crying and my remembrance. He loved the record so much. I love you, daddy.

4 out of 5 stars Don't go for broke unless you're a die-hard Stokowski fan.......2006-09-22

When Stokowski began to make Phase 4 recordings for Decca in 1964, he was already 82, but he hadn't lost his energy or his tendency to shape music in outlandish ways. I mostly love him, but this box set duplicates recordings that can be found on the Cala label, which has been releasing everything Stokowski in the world, and on Decca single CDs if you go to the used market.

I mention this because the whole box set, Vol. 2 in the Original Masters series, continas some forgettable performances, in particular the rhythmically slack Beethoven Sym. 5 and 7, the over-highlighted Schubert 'Unfinished,' and a live Brahms First that seems manic and forced too much of the time. However, if you think of Stokowski having little to offer in the German classics, here is an exceptional Beethoven Ninth, one of the best things from his late career and wonderful in every way.

Decca knows that the crowd-pleasers are the gaudy, multi-miked Phase 4 versions of Scheherazade, as bombastic as you could imagine, and lots of Russian fare, including Stoki's signature synthesis from Boris Godunov. The 1812 Over., by the way, isn't over the top and yet needed to be. Finally, this German-Russian collection contains a thrilling disc of Wagner excerpts, much of it grossly over-miked, but at its core containing very impressive, vital interpretations.

In all, I'd select the Wagner, the Beethoven Ninth, and the legendary Scheherazade as the best things here. Buy them separately or take the plunge for this whole box, your choice.

5 out of 5 stars More Sensational Stokowski.......2005-06-08

It took me a while to purchase this six-disc set in UNI's "Original Masters" series, but I finally did this past weekend. Classical music fans seem to either love or hate Leopold Stokowski (I, of course, love him), and unfortunately much of "Decca Recordings 1964-75, Volume 2" will be old news to serious devotees of the conductor. While I'm not familiar with the complete Decca back-catalog, at least three full discs worth of material have been previously available in the old "Weekend Classics" series -- Beethoven's 5th & 7th, Beethoven's 9th, and the Wagner selections. (I'm pretty sure the Rimsky-Korsakov material on disc five, and the Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky pieces on disc six have been issued prior too.) This is good news for those who came to collecting classical CDs late (like me) because while the Wagner is still available individually, the Beethovens have been fetching absurd prices in the Amazon Marketplace. The only material receiving its first international release is contained on disc 3 -- a Schubert "Unfinished" with the London Philharmonic from 1969 and a rousing live performance of the Brahms 1st with the London Symphony on the occasion of the conductor's 60th anniversary leading that body. The original instruments crowd will surely turn up their noses at these legendary performances, but me, I'll just sit back and listen to some more sensational sounding Stokowski.

5 out of 5 stars NOT your daddies Nine Inch Nails!! This stuff is HEAVY AND MUSICAL!.......2007-02-03

Trent Reznor and all the other come latelys cannot hold a MUSICAL candle to these the YOUNG GODFATHERS of proper, electronic rock----in any way, shape, or form....please believe me! Take it from a NIN fan!

I first heard this album way back in 1992 and the recording was already 7 years old at that point....a whole decade before computers were largely used to make music.
Samplers back then were extremely tempermental, with tiny hard drives if at all.....mostly employed floppy discs...NO virtual instruments were around, no commercial libraries thank God. All music was sampled by hard work, experimentation, and talent.

These guys are real Swiss MUSICIANS loaded with talent and IDEAS!!! imagine that, IDEAS!!!.......
This, their first release is very enjoyable to listen to and beautiful throughout.....without being light handed....
And the BEST PART ??????? NO G U I T A R S!!! but you will NOT find a HEAVIER group of well crafted songs anywhere..

My only complaint is that the American record public largely missed this the Mother Load of gorgeous inspired RAWK........it's GREAT TO BE ALIVE

this album is absolutely unbelievably brilliant! the young gods are, well: young gods. the stuff they've come up with, using "nothing" but samplers/sequencers, drums and a vocalist, is mind-blowing. this is their darkest album imho, not for your easy-listening evenings. the songs are mainly sung in french. the ones sung in english have a very particular charm because the singer has got a very nice accent. i've listened to this album lots of times over the past five, six years. and it still sends shivers down my spine every single time! even if every track on this album was only available as an individual single cd - you'd still have to buy each and every one of them! this is one of the greatest cds i have in my (1000+) collection. and even after having heard it so many times, i still discover new things every now and then! just listen to "did you miss me"; it's all samples from classical recordings, put together in such a fantastic way! i have to stop here: no words can possibly describe this music! buy this cd - and then buy young gods play kurt weill, t.v. sky, l'eau rouge!

The Young Gods are Swiss not French. Minimalist but huge sound. A Difficult but rewarding album.

4 out of 5 stars Young Gods: French industrial at its best.......1998-06-14

In 1985, The industrial music scene was still blossoming, and France, despite it's illustrious history as the centre of avante garde culture, was faceless in the field of underground music. Then came the Young Gods, a rowdy bunch of young frenchmen, staked their claim as the first french industrial pioneers with their 12" relese of envoye, soul idiot, and comme si cetait la derniere fois. Their style, though unpolished, was clearly great, and they remain France's greatest industrial band, some 13 years later. This album contains the 3 debut songs, in addition to newer ones. While the album is a much rougher one than their other material, music fans of all breeds should enjoy this self titled album.

3 out of 5 stars Great collections, with poor quality sound.......2003-01-09

I expected to listen to great professional classical orchestra ...for this classical music collection, but the quality of the music is not too good.

There are a lot of great music collections, but they will sound better when they record it right.

It is good when you just want to have more classical music, but for a CD, the sound quality is like a [poorley made] CD.

I give 3 stars for this product.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Collection Of Romantic Era Music.......2002-09-05

The Top 100 Classical Music series is a must have for novices of classical music, or someone already into the classics but wishes to amassa an "essentials" collection. This particular cd's span the Romantic Era, and although the 19th century saw much more music than what is covered on these recordings, this is nevertheless a brilliant and essential body of works. The Wedding March of Mendelsshon's Midsummer Night's Dream (played in weddings all over the world I'm assuming), Franz Lizst Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (The Looney Tunes Theme Music by the way) and other jewels of the era, such as the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss, the operetta overtures of Franz Von Suppe, Verdi's preludes to such operas as Nabucco and La Traviata, Wagner's intense, dramatic music for his Ring of the Nibelung operas, regarded as the epitome and the zenith of Romantic Era opera, and the music of other composers such as Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Sibelius, Rimsky Korsakov and many others. I highly recommend this cd to anyone wanting to sample and taste what Romantic Era music was all about. Five stars all the way.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat lacking.......2001-03-28

(referring to the entire collection)

The collection is well designed for introducing the listener to a large variety of music, with its broad range of composers and types of music. However, the interpretation of the music is hardly existant, and many of the pieces sound rather dull and uninteresting. Some lively pieces are played too slowly, and nearly all of them without emotion, keeping the set out of reach from being included in a true classical collection. Despite all that, the sheer number and range of pieces (along with the low price) make this a collection well suited for the new classical listener.

5 out of 5 stars The Young Gods are unbelievable!!!.......2005-06-14

"Only Heaven" is in my humble opinion, the best album of the 90s with "OK Computer" running a close second. If you like avant garde, techno, industrial, prog rock, etc. you should own this album. I saw them live in '95 on the tour for this album and they did not disappoint. Buy this record immediately!!!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant piece of work.......2003-11-09

Definitely one of my favourite albums. Unfortunately they have not caught on strongly with the North American audience, but this has to be one of the best CDs I own and I don't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Of all of the Young Gods' work, I think this was their peak of creativity. The new stuff doesn't sound the same. It's hard to classify, but if you like heavy music with a fusion of heavy guitars and drums with electronics, this is the album. It's better than any other industrial band I know (although I would classify this more as rock) including the Ministry. Take a chance. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars simply great.......2003-09-20

The Young Gods is one of the most interesting bands nowadays. They escape all boundaries and styles with a mixture of industrial, psychedelic rock and ambient textures that no other band has achieved to make with such brilliance.
It's a pity actually that this band's records are almost out of stock everywhere, cos they have made some of the most innovative and inspired albums of the 90's, even though they are ignored by media.

They have usually recognised as the band that invented sampled music, and even though may be a bit of an exageration, what is undeniable is that they were one of the first and definetely one of the best in handling sampled instruments.

This album is full of good songs, and that's what an album is supposed to contain. All of them are different enough to make the entire listening a very satisfying experience, and similar enough to give it a touch of conceptual unity.

If you ar familiar with the Young Gods, you'll know that with their previous album (TV Sky) they had made the most guitar-based album of their career, in a somewhat Ministry style. well, sort of.
With Heaven Only they combine those guitars with ambient passages and electronic devices.
Some songs are just short sketches ('Outside', 'Gardez les esprits') of no more than 1 minute long. Maybe fillers, it depends, but they are not bad at least.
There are a couple of pseudo-industrial guitar based songs ('Strangel', 'Speed of Night', 'Kissing the Sun') which are very energetic, but never as raw as for example Skinny Puppy or Ministry. They usually have ambient passages which make an interesting contrast with the guitars. The voice is energetic and with personality, but never disgusting. 'Kissing the Sun' is very catchy actually, a very good song.
Other songs are more electronic ('Donnez Les esprits', 'The dreamhouse', 'Lontaine') and are probably some of the best, since the electronics are innovative enough to delight us but not so cold as to kill the emotion transmitted by the melody. In fact, The Young Gods aer very good at melodies, and their songs sound to me very emotional. The most emotional of all is 'Child in a Tree', an acoustic guitar ballad full of melancholy.
And not to forget 'Moon evolutions', a more than 15 minute suit where they remind me of U2 and Pink Floyd with an industrial feeling, very interesting indeed, a song divided into 3 parts with a long ambient beatless passage in the middle.

I'm never sure which album I like best by The Young Gods, and that's a good sign I guess. But definetely Heaven Only is one of my favourite. If you think industrial music is just unlistenable music with distorted voices... or Mansonesque charade... give The Young Gods what they deserve... many listenings. For me, they are nowadays what Can were in the 70's.

5 out of 5 stars Young Gods at its best.......2004-01-20

One of the most acomplished album of the band, be it for music or lyrics.

And ... for my american co-reviewer, two tricks for your general culture :
- Switzerland happens not to be in France and thus its inhabitants are called ... the Swiss
- some of the lyrics are not in bad English but ... in French.

Cheers,

3 out of 5 stars getting older.......2003-08-08

What I liked about The Young Gods of old was how focused they were; their songs were tight little gems, for the most part. On Second Nature, there's too much meandering and goofing around; a lot of the music sounds like stuff other bands would discard as noodling. There are a few good numbers here, but they should've waited to release it until they had an album's worth.

4 out of 5 stars psychedelic sampled industrial??? well, good music........2003-06-29

I neglected this band for almost 10 years. I remember when I was about to start working in a program about industrial music in a radio station (well, they kid me and never gave me that job, sob sob) somebody lent me an album by The Young Gods and I almost didn't pay any attention to it convinced that my Front Line Assembly/Wumpscut/NIN/etc albums were much better. Now some of those bands bore me, some I still love. But I have quite recently discovered that The Young Gods deserved attention.

Well, to the point. I bought this album, which is their latest so far. And when I started listening to it I was instantly hooked. It is industrial if we accept labels, but it's not so easily categorised. It has something of the psychedelic bands of the 70's (not so much in this album as in other albums but oh well).
They basically work with sampled guitars which usually make a dense sonic wall, dynamic electronic basses and good beats that may change several times within a song. They don't bore me at all, cos unlike other "industrial" bands I don't want to mention, they touch very different moods and tempos with their songs.

Second nature is a very good industrial album. The guitar and electronic parts are very balanced, but not in a fight or a clean partition (50% guitars, 50% electronics), but instead they form together a very intelligent body of sound. Oh words words words. Sorry, to the music.

The album starts with 2 industrial bombs, 'Lucidogen' and 'Supersonic'. This guy knows how to use his voice. He is agressive but not in a hey-my-throat-seems-to-be-swallowing-nails way (let's think KMFDM, FLA, Wumpscut...), but more in a rockish way. In fact, I think The Young Gods is a rock band, just... experimental and conscious of their sonic experimentation.

But not all the songs are bombs, that's what usually makes me bore some KMFDM or Ministry, that all the songs sound the same (just my opinion, don't kill me). In the album we can also find more mid-tempo songs like the wonderful 'Laissez Couler' which is one of the best songs I've heard lately. Or the completely atmospheric 'Attends' or 'Toi du Monde' where the voice is lost in an electronically ambient atmosphere.

Some songs are very original for an "industrial" band, like 'Stick Around'. The most electronic song is 'The Sound in Your Eyes', whcih has one of the best electronic bass I've ever heard. They master the use of noise perfectly, giving it in perfectly observed doses (in the choruses of 'The Sound in Your Eyes' or 'Lucidogen'.

I recommend this album to everyone who likes industrial music (if you understand industrial as the combination of electronics and guitars with a usually hard edge) but who thinks most industrial bands are stagnated in a very tight way of song composition. If you like this album definetely buy 'TV Sky' ( abit more guitar-based) and 'Heaven Only' (similar but a bit less hard). Thx for reading this.
