this was a cd for my son so i cant really say about the music

5 out of 5 stars VERY impressed.......2007-06-07

Not many bands these days can claim a triple-platinum debut CD, yet that's exactly what Disturbed has done with their debut CD. The Sickness is Disturbed's most imaginative CD to date. With nu-metal on the decline, it's just a testament as to how good Disturbed actually is. The Sickness has everything: hard riffs, the scat for which Draiman would become so famous, and everything else that makes Disturbed the greatest band... well, ever. Here's my breakdown of (my opinion only) the best songs on The Sickness:

- The Game: An excellent little number with riffs that just draw you right in; plus, Draiman's amazing voice is shown off here. 20/10
- Meaning of Life: An awesome little number that had to grow on me before I realized just how friggin sweet it was. 20/10
- Shout 2000: Yes, it is another Disturbed cover, this time of "Shout" by Tears for Fears. And yet this is an absolutely amazing song, one that really works live. 19.5/10
- The Sickness: Lead single from the CD and probably their most famous song to date. Very metal-y and comes with an interesting little conversation between a son and his abusive mother. 15/10

Other good songs: Stupify, Voices, the rest of the album

DISTURBED FOREVER!!!

5 out of 5 stars I still enjoy this...........2007-05-29

While not as good as they were back in the days, Disturbed is a great band and none of their CDs have failed to disappoint me (except maybe "Ten Thousand Fists"). While not as good as "Believe," (my favorite Disturbed album) their 2000 release "The Sickness" was one of the most psychotic and best albums to rage out of the nu-metal genre, as well as one of the heaviest. No album that came out during the nu-metal era, except maybe Mudvayne's "L.D. 50," (and I really don't consider that one nu-metal) could surpass the brutality and anger that "The Sickness" possessed. Overall, even if you don't like the nu-metal genre, you have to give props to "The Sickness" for what it is: a rock 'em-sock 'em roller coaster of a ride which you won't be disappointed with!

Quick Scorebook of the Songs:
1. Voices - 5/5
2. The Game - 5/5
3. Stupify - 5/5
4. Down with the Sickness - 5/5 (still a great tune after all these years!)
5. Violence Fetish - 5/5
6. Fear - 5/5
7. Numb - 5/5
8. Want - 5/5
9. Conflict - 5/5
10. Shout 2000 - 5/5 (a much better cover than "Land of Confusion")
11. Droppin Plates - 5/5
12. Meaning of Life - 5/5

HIGHLIGHTS: "Voices," "The Game," "Stupify," "Fear," "Numb," "Shout 2000," and "Meaning of Life."

4 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2007-04-15

While I enjoyed this cd when I was younger, I still find it catchy today. Its not as hard as most of the music I enjoy today but still a great listen. Its like Kerry King said: You listen to a nu metal band like Distured or Godsmack but then you crave something harder. He's right and thank god I found out about Slayer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd.......2007-01-11

If your a head banger you'll love this cd. Lot of good songs on it.

5 out of 5 stars The inventors of goregrind..........2006-07-25

Heartwork and swansong are both terrible carcass albums which they have melody and dont got that goregrind sound no more... But to rejoice in vomit and if your new to goregrind at all or just plain brutal guttural deathmetal ? Learn something & start here with the creators of gore. Carcass's "symphonies of sickness" mastepiece...

5 out of 5 stars Witness the sickness..........2006-02-11

I hate extreme metal, what an incredibly stupid genre. Why are all these bands still trying to force themselves onto our collective consciousness? Yeah you play a few down-tuned power chords and blastbeats and gurgle down a microphone and think you're cutting edge? Listen to this and take heed, I own a copy of 'Symphonies of Sickness' - long ago I developed an immunity to your pathetic, anodyne attempts to shock. I can reliably tell you that you suck before I've even listened to you, and I guarantee you that I won't be alone in my opinion.

Have you ever actually listened to this record? If you haven't, your opinion in the world of `extreme' metal doesn't matter. You think your shoddy fifth-generation copy-of-a-copy can match any part of this? The aesthetic, the lyrics, the guitar sound, the song-writing, the sense of humour? You probably can't even listen beyond Track 2 because your puny, insignificant head starts to feel nauseous at around that point. What a pity, you never got to hear the intro to 'Ruptured in Purulence' because you're a fake-ass poser who knows nothing about the history of the bands you're trying to plagiarise. You think you're gonna be the sickest, most horrific band in the world? Whatever - you're just a joke. Everyone thinks you suck because we were all listening to this piece of GENIUS whilst we were eating your placenta for afternoon tea. No-one else has come close to topping this since 1989 and you and your 2-bit pukecore project aint gonna change a thing.

5 out of 5 stars Swarming Vulgar Mass that will kick your..........2006-02-09

Empathological Necroticism is one of my personal favorite Carcass songs. The disc kicks off with Reek Of Putrefaction which is extremely fast (just like everything Carcass does) and well written. Exhume To Consume is a sick song that just flat out kills. Along with Swarming Vulgar Mass Of Infected Virulency and Embryonic Necropsy And Devourment hell everything on this album is great. The opening drums of Ruptured In Purulence is one that I have emulated while jamming out many times. It's simple but everyone that knows Carcass knows it. Especially the vocal gargling. This is a excellent album, one of if not the best Carcass release. I still listen to this album to this day.
The original cover blows away the new one...

5 out of 5 stars IT'll turn your brain to MUSH!!!!!.......2004-11-13

I am totally bias towards this album. Why you ask? Because it is my favorite album ever. In any genre. This was one of the first death metal/grincore records I ever got. I was 13 years old when i got this and it blew my mind. The recording is low budget and somewhat raw but it adds to the essence of the album. The music kills and so do the vokillz. I don't post my picture cause constant listens to this record have melted the skin off my face. buy this record. A must for anyone just getting into the music. You can't be a fan of music if you don't own this.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpice grind.......2004-06-28

This was when carcass was at their best and had the best grind have to offer plus its prolly the most brutal grind releases ever along with reek of putrefaction just an work of art! Every song hits you like a brick in the head and its just amazing !

5 out of 5 stars Mindblowingly Rockin'.......2001-06-15

The sticker on the album says that this album rocks by some reviewer and he was right. I was hesitant about giving this CD five stars, because those are common reviews on this site, but this CD deserves it. Mudhoney is one of those bands that I have every CD of out of respect for how much I like some of their CDs. I always loved their early CDs, but their latter CDs left a bit to be desired and most of them failed to match their intensity. This CD makes up for that.

Kind of like the Pixies bootleg, Rough Diamonds, this CD is Mudhoney at their rawest, and it's a welcome treat that I urge any Mudhoney fan to pick up. I'd also urge anyone in the mood for a rocking and raw CD to pick this up.

A few songs repeat, but you'll barely notice it. Even mid-tempo numbers like "By Her Own Hand" are pulled off with unexpected urgency (with some subtle lyric changes) that mark how great a band can sound. It's a shame they were never really able to match this intensity in the studio. Some songs off their later albums are given a great second chance they didn't intially get. Songs of off My Brother the Cow (not a very good album) like "Judgement, Rage, Retribution and Thyme", "Dissolve", "What Moves the Heart" and a few others are given great performances that make up for that album.

Other songs of Mudhoney's fine debut album (which is also an essential grunge-period release) show up in fine form here from "This Gift" to "You Got It"

Other highlights: "Here Comes Sickness", "You Make Me Die", "Touch Me, I'm Sick", "Suck You Dry", "Poisoned Water Poisons the Mind", and of course "Hate the Police".

All in all, this album is blisteringly raw, and I'm so glad that I bought it. No one seems to own it, and that's a shame.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Album Description

Bright Eyes releases their third album of 2005, and this time it's a live collection. Motion Sickness is Conor Oberst and act's first live album from his own label, Team Love. The album contains a pair of non-album covers, Elliott Smith's 'The Biggest Lie' and Fiest's 'Mushaboom'. Oberst is sticking to his indie or die guns on the album, too. Expanding his anti-corporate campaign from avoiding Clear Channel venues, a policy that recently led to a rescheduled show in St. Louis. Saddle Creek.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not up to par.......2007-06-04

I purchased this CD after seeing Bright Eyes in concert, and Oh, what a mistake. The concert was the best I've ever seen, and I stupidly thought to recapture the amazing performance despite the CD's the so-so reviews. Unfortunately this CD reflects Neither Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst's live Nor recorded talent. It's passionless, and that's the last word I would ever think to use to describe Obert's work. Passion has always been Oberst's driving creative force, and there is no point to Bright Eyes without it.

All this being said, I do not do not discourage the purchase of ANY OTHER Bright Eyes release. Conor Oberst is a phenomenal artist and his work is among my all-time favorites.

Who knew a mediocre Bright Eyes Cd even existed? I still am marvelling...

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Trumpet.......2006-03-13

Motion Sickness, Bright Eyes' third album of 2005, is a compilation of live versions of some of his greatest hits. Many of the songs feature trumpet quite prominently, this working to great effect in "We Are Nowhere And It's Now", "Southern State", and "Old Soul Song." The album also contains his provocatively political and sacreligious single, "When the President Talks to God" as well as a less-whimsically performed and less enjoyable version of the song "True Blue". All in all, the album is a generally good mix of songs (also present is "The Biggest Lie" by Elliot Smith) with a distinct flavour.

3 out of 5 stars Its OK, but the live shows and the studio albums are better.......2006-02-26

I was eager to buy this after seeing Bright Eyes play locally, but really, its a disappointment. The album is a lot more muted than the live show I remember, which was entirely captivating and full of an energy thats mostly lacking here. Oh well, its still Bright Eyes!

2 out of 5 stars Save Your Dramamine.......2006-01-07

On this live compilation, Conor Oberst manages to suck the life out of almost every song -- his own, and the cover tracks. Instead of delivering frenetic, upbeat, and loose versions of the songs, Oberst sputters out slow, controlled renditions with bare-bones instrumental backing. On his studio tracks, Oberst's lyrical delivery is natural and fluid; even his clamorous outbursts seem unplanned. On this disc, Oberst sounds like he's reading the words from his liner notes -- matching them exactly, but lacking true feeling.

On the final track, Oberst disgraces the late Elliott Smith with a dismally dry cover of Smith's "The Biggest Lie." The only high point on this disc is the previous track, a whimsical and enjoyable version of the campy Lua B-side "True Blue."

Steer clear of "Motion Sickness" and pick up the studio tracks on "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" instead.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, Terrible Title.......2006-03-31

It's a great album, and the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the horrifying grammatical error in the title (look again) that I'm sure the band regrets constantly. The sound quality is not that wonderful, but there are some truly memorable tunes on it just the same. By all means, get this thing if you don't have it, but buy their self-titled debut album first. Alice Donut was one of the core bands of Alternative Tentacles back in the late '80s and early '90s. Their first album catches them at their rawest, but also their most fun.

Musically, Donut's style has much in common with the psychedlic punk style of the...Surfers, but I regard Donut as being the more straight-up fun-to-listen-to of the two. The Surfers are great, but in a different way. Alice Donut's work is better informed by a sense of humor and a lively attitude than the Surfers, who usually come off as being much darker and more serious. However, this does not mean that Alice Donut does not pack some weight - in keeping with many Alternative Tentacles bands, Alice Donut follows in the footsteps of the Dead Kennedies with thier lyrics - heavy sarcasm, but always socially and politically relevant. Buy this album, sit back, dig the lyrics and enjoy the wild, slapdash music!

This album has a bit of a darker cast than "Donut Comes Alive" or "Mule" (these three albums feature Donut's original line-up), but still carries the wild energy one should expect from this band. It is their first "real" album, since Donut Comes Alive was technically a "live" album. Be sure to check out tracks 1,2,4,5,7 and 8.

"Lisa's Father" is a CD bonus track. Originally appearing on a Alternative Tentacles marketing compliation album, it was NOT on the original "Bucketfulls" LP. One will notice that it diverges from the style of the album markedly, since it is basically Ted Houghton doing a spoken word bit. It is still really fun to listen to, and is in fact one of my favorite bits by Alice Donut.

5 out of 5 stars Genre Defining.......2001-06-01

Going way beyond the bounds of "punk" and what was supposed to be played and discussed within the confines of "punk", Alice Donut helped to break the mold. Coming on hard on the heals of someone like the Dead Kennedys, A.Donut helps define the dark muse which so many Alternative Tentacle (Or just plain Alternative) bands reply upon. A great example of this, is "Lisa's Father" which is found on this disk.

The song deals with those amusing little Christian comic books which you get handed every once in awhile. In this particular issue, a little girl is getting molested/raped by her father and a neighbor while her mother hides with the help of Jack Daniels. Eventually, all is found out, but the parents discover Jesus and tell LIsa to pray. Hilliariously Horrible. And that is Alice donut.

This album is tremendous, as with all of their releases. Not only do they expand the definition of what "punk" can be thematically and lyrically, but musically, they are no slouches either. Listen to Dorothy as an example. Stephen Moses always provides great drumming, especially on that tune. Rockin' good fun.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this album as soon as possible.......1999-09-02

"Bucketfuls" is easily one of the best punkish/pop albums you will ever hear. Actually, that last sentence can used for every one of their albums. What's wonderful about this album is that every song has it's own uniqueness and sound and you will easily find yourself playing the album again and again.(As I did when I played the tape I had of this over and over until it wore out.) Yes, unfortunately this band ended it's legacy on a bad note with "Pure Acid Park", but do not let that album sway you from their other albums.(Most notably "Bucketfuls", "Revenge"(the best", "Mule", and "Untidy".) For those of you who never got to see Alice Donut play live, YOU NOW HAVE AT LEAST ONE REGRET IN YOUR LIFE.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BAND YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE.......1999-05-26

MOST people haven't heard of Alice Donut EVER. I happened onto them quite by accident, but what a great accident! They're gone now, off to that Great-Bands-That-Nobody-Ever-Heard-Of Record Store in the Sky...but hey, they left all this great music! Look how cheap it is! Quick, start buying it now before they're "discovered" and their albums are $15 a pop! Bucketfulls of Sickness, Mule and Untidy Suicides are the three essential albums, start from there. Enjoy!

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

The trailblazing American feminist Emma Goldman loved to say, "If I can't dance, I want no part in your revolution." Emma Goldman would love the International Noise Conspiracy. Combining radical anarchist politics and punk-mod-soul sounds, the International Noise Conspiracy's debut, Survival Sickness, reads like a manifesto but moves like a triple-bill featuring the Small Faces, Booker T and the MGs, and Fugazi. The revolution may not be televised, but at least now it has a soundtrack. --S. Duda

Amazon.com

What do you do after issuing the definitive punk rock manifesto? Self-implode. It's what all self-respecting revolutionary punk bands do (just ask the Sex Pistols). Soon after releasing The Shape of Punk to Come (which included the warning shot "The Refused Are Fuckin' Dead"), Refused frontman and mastermind Dennis Lyxzén disbanded the group in mid-tour. But he didn't give up his mission. With the (International) Noise Conspiracy, Lyxzén continues to seek an incendiary mesh of art, revolution, and music. While the Refused deconstructed pop conventions with jazzy ferocity and hardcore pathos, the Conspiracy's radical politics are hidden in the guise of soulful '60s punk rock mayhem, recalling the high-octane garage thrash of the Makers and fellow Swedes the Nomads. Perhaps they figured the best way to change the system is to crash the party. If the Refused were a combination of Derrida and Fugazi, the Conspiracy are Debord and the Who. "Smash It Up" is less a rowdy's rebel yell than a subversive call to arms, inciting "the creative urge to destroy bourguise [sic] culture" over an organ- and bass-heavy rock steady beat. When Lautreamont sings "My heart still hurts from last night" during "Survival Sickness," he's not a spurned lover--he's sick of the state of the world, from "smart bombs" to "easy listening." How does one continue to exist in a society in which the twin evils of capitalism and totalitarianism strip the world of its resources and the people of their dignity? "Won't you forget about me when I'm gone?" he implores in "The Reproduction of Death," but again it has nothing to do with love--he's speaking about the body enslaved as commodity. The liner notes breezily name-check Lautr&ecute;amont, Fourier, Durutti, Warhol, and Marx. Heavy stuff, but lightened by the shake-ass groove Lyxzén's co-Conspirators kick up. This is revolution with a backbeat, and the (International) Noise Conspiracy are the MC5 of the 21st century. --Tod Nelson

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2003-01-16

I first saw The International Noise Conspiracy over a year ago at a local show. They are one of the best bands I have seen live. Dennis is great and puts on a awesome performance. I don't know how one person can have so much energy. This album is great, and I think that they deserve more credit.Every single song is good and is sure to catch your attention. For anyone who is wondering on if they should get this album, the answer is yes, you will love it.Once you develop a liking for this band, you will be addicted, trust me.

5 out of 5 stars YES, good punk.......2002-03-08

SO you want punk that is understandable and has good flow and mixes different sounds not just hard pounding guitar riffs and the same drum beat over and over again? Check these guys out... hard and edgy with melodic undertones... a great expansion of Refused, you should check them out too, this isnt as hard as refused but I still dig it and think you will too if you like Refused, Bad Religion and bands like that.

5 out of 5 stars the new beat.......2001-09-06

This album is a full-length hit that you can listen to on repeat. The message in the lyrics is certainly easy to grasp and take to your heart, meaning this kind of music is one that is perfect for the revolution. This is the kind of punk I'd love to hear more often!
I love artists that grows and breaks new land, and one of those artists is Dennis Lyxzen. Refused's last album was very gifted and talented hardcore that said so much in so little words, and the same talent and call for revolution radiates this album, but with even more power, even though this isn't hardcore at all. You should find out why by listening to this one. Love.

5 out of 5 stars Good new political punk.......2001-08-12

Just when you think good, meaningful punk really is completely dead a group like TINC releases an excellent political punk cd. Like a lot of other reviewers have said, TINC is in the same class as Refused, Nation of Ulysses, etc. The songs have points, which they explain in the cd booklet extensively. If you like the bands mentioned above and are really sick of the explosion of mindless "pop-punk", I recommend Survival Sickness. It is a great cd from a promising band.

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2001-07-21

Finally an album which has something to say. Dennis had something to say with Refused too, but his words were overshadowed by the powerful music and the audience it attracted. Here, you can easily get grasp of what he is trying to say and I have to say it is refreshing that they get some attention. I am so fed up with meaningless lyrics and predesigned artists. This is art. This uses music as a medium in a productive way. The sleeve gives you the background of each song, what is intended etc. Whether you are a revolutionary, socialist or whatever doesn't matter. This album makes you THINK on your own a little and that is more important than anything. Oh, the songs are great, a little bit MC 5, The Kinks and some Nymphet Noodlers.

Album Description

Hatesphere - the five-pronged jackhammer of Thrash and Death Metal ferocity is about to unleash another attack. The prolific five-piece, who in their current unbeatable lineup of Jacob Bredahl (v), Peter Lyse Hansen (g), Mikael Ehlert (b), Henrik Bastrup Jacobsen (g) and Drummer Anders Gyldenøhr, are shaking the walls of the world. Since 2001 this leading Death Thrash quintet from the quiet town of Aarhus, Denmark has been throwing right-hooks to the jaw of the international metal community. From their self-titled debut to the recent release of The Killing EP (2005), a twisted little teaser for their SPV debut, Hatesphere have been stunning metal fans and critics worldwide. Their latest, The Sickness Within, delivers a festival of hate that cracks the foundations from the first moment. The band's influences, ranging from old-school Thrash, Hardcore, Rock and Death Metal, all the way to merciless technical Brutal Death Metal á la Suffocation, can all be found on ! The Sickness Within. Album number four for the Danes is definitely the most multi-faceted thrashfest of their career. The message is simple: To be free from the disease of mediocrity you need only experience The Sickness Within!

Sickness Within is the full length follow up to the Killing EP by the Danish Metal outfit Hatesphere. Features 11 blistering tracks including 'Seeds Of Shame', 'The Coming Of Chaos', 'Murderous Intent', 'Reaper Of Life' & the title track. SPV. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars HATESPHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-14

man i love this band they play with so much aggression that it just makes you want to smash things their new cd takes a few listens to grow on you but damn it's so good this is the future of thrash metal done right by these drinking machines from Denmark

4 out of 5 stars Hatesphere Rip It Up (somewhat).......2007-01-10

This was a much anticipated purchase for me. Combine an incredibly intense, Metal thrash/hardcore band with Metal's best board man (Tue Madsen), producer extrordinaire Jacob Hansen and the result should be audio nuclear destruction. Upon hearing, however, there was a dynamite explosion but megaton it wasn't.

This is good, don't get me wrong, but it falls short of great. Compared to the mastery of their previous CD, Ballet of the Brute, this has to be a disappointment. The energy is there. The musicianship is still tight. But the songs just don't have the depth and intricacy of their last offering.

Tue Madsen's usual mixing magic is a bit muted as well. The first song has so much overpowering percussion that you wonder how your ear drums will take 40 minutes of their drums. Happily, the mix becomes more balanced as the CD moves along.

If you are into Hatesphere, then I recommend purchasing this CD. If you don't have any of their stuff, you'd be better served buying 2004's Ballet of the Brute first.

4 out of 5 stars great modern thrash.......2006-11-16

Hopefully this guys keep up the crunchy thrash tunes as I dig it. Songwriting is better than on previous cds. Their EP is great too. They can get a 5 in my book if they take the songwriting to the next level - get more memorable lyrics/choruses stuck in my head.

5 out of 5 stars Best thrash album i have heard in 10 yrs!!!!!!.......2006-10-23

Where the hell did this come from, absolute genius. I knew this would be good but jesus christ. Imagine a modern day Slayer cross Machine Head playing with a Swedish sound and heaviness and you get Hatesphere though not as melodic as slayer. Think burn my eyes, Reign in blood, master of puppets and vulgar display of power because this is almost as accessible as those are and who knows in years to come held in the same regard. This is the perfect album every song is cluttered with memorable and devastating riff after riff you just have to grit your teeth and nod your head in sheer admiration, every song chucks along like steam train.
These riffs just drive with some force that make mastodon look like ripples on a pond. This is the only album i heard of their's and will defo be buying the rest.
There is alot of influences here and is nothing really new but if you like all the forementioned and heavy as concrete but catchy as hell metal then you will be just love this. Just can't believe these aren't bigger than they are. They are the new Machine head or Metallica well at least this album is!!

4 out of 5 stars Meaty, riff-based modern thrash .......2006-08-13

Hatesphere has been around for quite some time now, and while they have their ups and downs, none of their albums are boring or low on melody in any way. Excluding their EPs, The Sickness Within is their fourth studio album and picks up where their previous work left off.

Album starter "White Fever" is chock full of riffs, blood-spitting scream vocals, and a sweet, somewhat bluesy rock solo that really contrasts the otherwise heaviness of the piece, but it fits and even adds depth to it. "Fallen Shall Rise in a River of Blood" is thrashier and also features a nice solo; slow, melodic and very well-written. The calculated riffery and swift chord progressions on "Reaper of Life" prove the band is still capable of throwing us lots of technical riffs a la their 2002 release Bloodred Hatred; while the title track is also among the fastest on the album with powerful drumming laying the foundation of their thrash metal fury. Overall, The Sickness Within isn't as fast and single-mindedly angry as some other bands in the genre. They do inject their songs with stomping bass and guitar drive, and thundering drums, but the music is always balanced out with clever tempo shifts. Check out "Heaven Is Ready to Fall"; lots of bass and awesome riffs abound its first half before the song breaks into a slow yet hauting silent section filled with lots of keyboards and Hammond sounds. Nevermore's Steve Smyth also guests on the album, playing a terrific solo on the last song "Marked by Darkness".

On the production front, the reverb-induced drumming on "Seeds of Shame" adds to the atmosphere of the song. "Murderous Intent" and "The Coming of Chaos" are a bit more on the modern thrash side, as they are infused with plenty of metalcore elements which also come to the fore in the vocal department. The former sees vocalist Jacob Bredahl opting for more hardcore-based singing while the latter does stray back into track in its melodic guitar work and central bass lines. The production carries the typical traits of Jacob Hansen's work. While I admit Hansen is a good producer, I feel his work has become a bit too one-dimensional over the years. On the other hand, I can immediately identify his sound by hearing a single song from any band. So if that was what he was after, he has achieved it. I just happen to prefer rawer production when I listen to death or thrash, with little touches of modern studio effects. This is a minor complaint though, as there are many others who dislike the work of guys like Andy Sneap and Neil Kernon.

This is a good album, but by no means essential. You might want to give it a listen if you enjoyed the newer albums by Exodus and Slayer, since some of the songs such as "Chamber Master" are highlighted by epic scale arrangements and old-school riffery. Also, Hatesphere is recommended to fans of The Haunted, Pantera, and Dew Scented.

Soprano Dawn Upshaw's programs are always interesting, and this one's a beauty: one of Bach's most heartfelt cantatas flanked by songs and arias of Purcell. For the most part, she's in excellent voice, but with the tics that make some demur from enthusiasm: occasional swooping, thinning of the voice in the upper regions, lapses into a "Broadway" type of vocalism, and diction problems. The latter, oddly enough, are as present in Purcell's English as in Bach's German, as in the way Upshaw lands heavily on the r with a broad American accent rather than the lightly rolled r we're used to in performances of period English music. There's also some broad word-painting in the Bach, whose text, charting the soul's journey from sin to redemption, really needs no extra emoting. That said, Upshaw's fans will love this disc, and even those who prefer a different approach will enjoy it. Accompaniments are excellent: a continuo team in the Purcell, a small chamber group in the Bach. Outstanding sonics, too. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, fervent Bach, but the Purcell songs are a bit prettified.......2006-08-24

Amazon's reviewer seems to have zoned out on how Dawn Upshaw pronounces words, missing most of the musical value here. Her singing of the Bach cantata, 'Mein Herze schwimmt in Blut,' is very moving. She is deeply involved, and her voice extracts the deep reverence and religious passion that makes this music so great. I'm not as convinced by the Purcell songs, however. Upshaw has chosen some of the most famous, and set against great singers like Battle, Baker, and Ferrier, her rendiitons seem a little shallow and prettified. She's considerably more tuned in to Bach, which is good enough to make this a memorable CD, if not her very best. Things would be much improved if the conducting by the (totally uncredited) conductor weren't so limp.

5 out of 5 stars Now that the Sun hath veil'd his light............2001-08-04

Some say angels are God's messangers. When angels communicate, surely they sound like Dawn Upshaw. Upshaw's beautiful soprano voice rises to the stars and floats back again as she sings the beautiful collection of arias and cantatas by Purcell and Bach contained in ANGELS HIDE THEIR FACES.

Shaw's interpretation of Purcell's 'How sweet it is to love' reminds me of the elation I first felt on realizing love exists. 'Lord what is a man' brings one back to earth with a lamentation about human frailty and the finiteness of human existence. "Rejoice, rejoice" sings the angel in 'Hark! How all things' with lyrics from 'The Fairy Queen' -- a text by E. Settle after Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.'

Bach's cantatas fill the air as Upshaw sings arias in German (interpretations are provided in the text accompanying the CD). J.S. Bach's songs are clearly and beautifully articulated by Upshaw while in the backgound various wind and string instruments accompany her vocalizations. Many of Upshaw's vocalizations by Bach in German as well as the instrumentation (including viol consort) remind me of the arias from 'The Messiah' -- majestic albeit on a very human scale. For example, Aria #9 by Bach is comparable to "He shall lead his flock.." (although the latter was written for an alto voice).

The music in English by Purcell is a bit lighter. My favorite piece is 'An evening hymn' by Purcell which I would expect to hear near dusk in an English chapel. However, ANGELS HIDE THEIR FACES contains music you can play year round at any time of day.

5 out of 5 stars Picky reviewers.......2001-05-31

I've got a degree in musicology ( and am fluent in German as well), and for a while after total immersion in graduate school, found my listening enjoyment frustrated by the same pickiness that hampers your reviewer. Fortunately, that passed, and I'm now able to simply appreciate Dawn Upshaw's performance of the music we hear all too seldom. I hope that others will be able to participate in Upshaw's interpretation of the poetry behind the music, to think about the theological role of angels (not just pretty faces and feathery wings), to love this wonderful recording. We are indeed blessed that technology allows us to experience such music, such an artist.

5 out of 5 stars hark ! how well the lady sings.......2001-05-31

This is one of those little gems that becomes more appealing with each hearing. The Purcell pieces are sweet and lovely, but the Bach ! This Cantata is the glory of this CD. It's verses are of the deepest sorrow and repentance, woeful utterances for God's forgiveness, until the final aria, "How joyful is my heart since God is appeased". Dawn Upshaw's interpretation is beautiful. She captures the emotion, the longing, the spirituality and heart of the piece.

The musicians in the simple accompaniment are superb, and the entire package excellent...it was the cover art that first drew my attention to this CD...an unusual and moving painting by Hugo Simberg titled "Wounded Angel" from 1903. It also has the lovely added touch of being slip-cased, making it a perfect gift item for anyone who likes this type of music.

As you might have been thinking that wards you away from this CD, this is NOT Japanese, but manufactured in Japanese. All of the songs are in English, so no worries. The album is "The Sickness" with 5 extra songs, "God of the Mind" (unreleased), "Stupify" (live), "The Game" (live), "Voices" (live), and "Down with the Sickness" (live). The live versions are better in my opinion. The extra 5 songs are worth it for the money, and think of the more money this way if you wonder or think you wish not to pay this much extra:
1) This gets Disturbed more money to record
2) You gotta pay for shipping from Japan to America somehow, lol.
