Following up on the release of his debut CD, The Voice, Russell Watson is back with Encore, another mix of opera favorites and popular songs. By now Watson has become virtually a household name--he sells out large concert venues and remains on the top-seller charts. On Encore, we find Puccini and Verdi sharing the billing with Lulu and Lionel Ritchie on the CD's 16 tracks, which range from the much-loved Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" to "Where My Heart Will Take Me," the theme for Enterprise (the latest Star Trek TV series). Indeed, a more fitting title might have been The Voices, since Watson explores opera, sacred works, film, television themes, and pop songs. The orchestral arrangements on tracks such as "Va, Pensiero" may not win him any fans from the opera contingency, but Watson reveals a captivating sound on pop ballads, including "You Are So Beautiful" and "Somewhere." If you enjoyed The Voice, you're certain to want an encore. --Rebecca Agnew

Russell Watson is amazing. It is truly a delight to hear him sing both the pop and the arias, for he performs both equally well. His rendition of Volare is very fun, and when he sings Somewhere, it's simply breathtaking. His duet with Lionel Richie was also splendid. They really did sound fantastic together. The two low points for me were The Prayer, because I couldn't stand Russell's duet partner, Lulu, and Don't Know How I Got By, because the song just didn't seem to suit Russell's voice. However, the other tracks more than make up for those few inferior selections. Russell Watson truly is a talented man, and I highly recommend this album.

I have all 4 of Russell's Cd's and this is by far his wrose.
The Classical stuff is great but The pop stuff is some of the wrose pop stuff he has even done.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

just a warning..........2005-10-14

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

Not as good as the debut, but it still rocks.......2006-07-20

There are a lot of bands that were "overlooked" back in the late 80's and early 90's. When you really think about it, some of those bands deserved to be overlooked. There were a lot of hard rock bands from that era that just didn't stand out from the rest of the pack. Then there are bands like Babylon A.D., who despite having plenty of talent, never seemed to get the attention they deserved.

Babylon A.D's 1992 album Nothing Sacred was a very solid hard rock/hair metal album that followed in the same Warrant meets Tesla sound of the band's self-titled debut. The album is melodic, but also bluesy with plenty of swagger. The songwriting and lyrical content is weaker than it was on the debut album though. I think the absence of Jack Ponti (Surgin) as a songwriter really hurt the band, as he was responsible for some of the better tracks on the first album.

While it may not be as good as its predecessor, Nothing Sacred is still a decent hard rock album that should appeal to most fans of the genre.

It's horrible!! Don't know what happened to this band 'cause their first release rocked! THe music is decent enough but the juvenile, pre-teen sex filled lyrics kill this release. And don't get me started on the Train song...WTF??? Bypass this one!

This is one of the greatest, I got this over 10 yrs ago. The best song is "So Savage The Heart" because not only do I like the music, I really like the lyrics. I also strongly recommend their first release

This album is very good. If you like heavy metal, then this album is worth checking out! My favorite track is#10. There are some infectious hooks on this record and great vocals.

My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06

Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.

Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.

--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.

On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.

The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.

The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.

Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20

This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Overlooked CD of 90s punk.......2006-02-03

I bought this about ten years ago on the advice of a friend and have never been disappointed. I find myself pulling it out again every few months. As far as I know this is the only CD these guys ever produed which is a shame. This a good collection of 90's punk songs with good crunchy guitar and some innovative drum work. Some of the songs like "Get a Job" show a sense of humor as well. My favorite song is "Not Perfect", just can't get enough of the guitar riff. I'm also partial to "Don't Know Why" and "Don't Say Nothin Bad".

Great cd, music from early 90's.......2005-03-08

I happend to see this fella live at a club in conneticut. Great personality, (actually was drinking some beers with em, watching the first group. when he stood up and said well mate, gotta go. he stood up walked up on stage and blam.) Fella can play anything!. they forgot to turn off the video's playing (rob zombie) and he said you like this? and went right into following the instrumental. overall a good one man band. Hope you enjoy.

This is some good mid 90's punk........2005-02-15

Well I found this CD in a pawn shop without knowing what it was. But it looked good and so I bought it. And I am glad I did. I don't get a chance to listen to it as much as when I first got it, but there are some great songs on it. The one I most go back to this CD for is their cover of the Carole King song Don't Say Nothin' Bad About My Baby. Don't Know Why, Get A Job, and Walls are good songs too. Plus the other songs are nice too. This is a mid 90's punk CD. So if you like Green Day from back then you should like this. So go and buy this wherever you can and let it surprise you with how great of punk this is, like it surprised me. It's just too bad that I don't know more about this band, and whether or not they have more CDs and weren't that successful. Pick this up wherever you can find it and enjoy it.

Nothing is Sacred.......2004-01-30

Everyone seems to think this is the worst LORDS cd but I disagree. Although there is very little continuity between the song styles, I think this was a very brave album for the band.
If you enjoy the recent never to be officially released LORDS CD "Hang On" you will not like "Sacred" at all. Gone are Treguna's brilliant bass lines, Nicks thumping surf drums, and Brian's stones style. All of which are the glue for SACRED.
This other reviewer must be Steven Marque because he keeps on trying to use his name to compare and yet has absolutely nothing in common with Stiv's talent. Shame on YOu Steven Marque. That is really pathetic and so is your "talent"

No, Nothing Is.......2003-12-26

The Lords are all over the shop. The second IRS record by the band, it moves more into many genres sonically and romantic, if sometimes necromantic imagery lyrically. This one is least like the new 2003 incarnation of the band fronted by StevenMarque; but you can hear Stiv's influence on him on tracks like BAD TIMING and TALE OF TWO CITIES. Like any other LORDS album, a meaningful masterpiece and certainly significant theosophically, against the backdrop of most 80's vibrant/vapid offerings.

This was my introduction to the world of "Gothic Punk." I was 14 and had never heard anything remotely like this, but the songs on this album hooked me fast. Lords of the New Church has quite a bit of songwriting talent. Dave Tregunna, although not the best bass player I have heard, plays some of the catchiest and most simple and original lines in songs like Johnny Too Bad and Dance With Me. Stiv Bator's voice has plenty of attitude and his lyrics are really cool in a trashy way. If you like the Damned you'll recognize their former guitarist Brian James who plays really cool guitar figures against the bass lines. They top it off with some sick 50's esque horn lines too! Overall this is a great rock and roll record. I would highly recommend this to any fans of the Damned and anyone who wants to hear how great and refreshingly simple a rock record can be!

Good, but not what I had hoped for.......2006-06-08

Given the players involved - Bob Daisley, Eric Singer, and of course David Glen Eisley - I expected a bit more from Stream. The band's 1999 album Nothing is Sacred is a solid hard rock album, but it is decidedly unmelodic. I wasn't necessarily expecting it to sound like a Giuffria album, but I thought that with Eisley on vocals it would have some more melodic elements.
That being said, Nothing is Sacred is still a good hard rock album. The band makes no attempt to imitate grunge or nu-metal, instead concentrating on hard driving, heavy rock & roll. Good stuff, but not all that memorable. You probably won't find yourself humming a Stream tune after listening to the album.

The Best Unknown Band - Powerful .......2004-08-29

I have been waiting for a band that fits the voice of David Glen Eisley. These guys all seem to work great together. If you like it Loud Hard and Heavy, but so you can still understand the words while it kicks you in the gutt, Buy this one!!!!! When I feel like "cranking it up" I put in this one. If your any kind of Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Fan you have to get this one.

Great sounding cd.A must for all Kiss/Sabbath fan with Bob Daisley on bass , Peter Scheithauer on guitars ,David glen Eisley on vocals and Eric Singer on drums.The songs are heavy as hell thanks the guitar riffs and Eisley's singing is so poweful.The rythm section is groovy and heavy it's the 70's vibe meeting the 90's agressivity.Not an 80's style cd but musicians who wanted to go forward and not 80's musicians who tried to be Grundge.They stayed true to their roots i love this record.Kiss/Wasp and Sabbath fans go buy it the others try it.
