4 out of 5 stars Sandi's Return to Form. Almost........2007-07-11

I've been a fan of Sandi Patty's music for years, but I've been buying her recent stuff out of habit. I've found little I enjoyed in them. Still, when this CD came out, I bought. I'm glad to say that I am loving it.

This CD features a good mix of styles to keep you listening. There's the upbeat fun of "Sing to the King" and almost gospel quality to "Step into the Joy." Worship is the focus of "Made Me Glad" and "You Call Me Yours" and both songs really draw your focus to God. And while she does have a few power ballads to allow her to hit the high notes, they don't dominate as much as they have in the past.

The words are absolutely amazing. The title song is a great reminder that God, in His grace, uses everything to draw us closer to Him. "You Call Me Yours" marvels in our position before God. "In My Heart" reflects on God's presence even in pain.

There are several familiar tracks here. "Sweeter Medley" is a combo of several popular praise songs. The disc ends with "Grace Flows Down," another praise chorus. This one is a duet with Sandi's daughter Jenn. The two sound great together. Finally, Sandi can't resist covering a few of her old songs with the "Sandi Medley." I'll forgive the indulgence since the CD is at least partially a celebration of her 25 years in ministry. But I would have preferred to see more original work.

There are still a few too many power ballads for my taste. I enjoy them, but too many on one disc tend to bore me, even with Sandi's amazing voice. Still, this is the best thing she's released in years. I've really connected with the words and enjoy the music. If this is a taste of where she is going musically, I can't wait to hear more.

5 out of 5 stars What a blessing!.......2007-06-14

Sandi's voice is so inspirational, and this latest CD is truly a worship experience. The song choice is great. And the duet with her daughter is wonderful; Sandi has done a great job raising all of her children. We need more role models like her. Her talent transcends a lot of what is considered "music" by society today.

5 out of 5 stars sandi's back.......2007-06-06

Just listened to this cd and takes me back to her heyday. the songs are impeccable and her voice is spot on. no wonder she is known as "the voice".

5 out of 5 stars She is always the best.......2007-05-17

All of Cd's of Sandi go beyond the expectations. The quality of the sound, her voice and the songs are excellent. The songs really inspire us every day in our walk with the Lord. I listen the cd over and over. Give some attention to the songs you call me, step into the joy, found and amazing grace. Sandi is always the best

4 out of 5 stars What you expect from Sandi... .......2007-04-28

On "Falling Forward," Sandi Patty sticks with the formula that has worked on most of her albums: a winning combination of slow, worship songs and upbeat gospel songs. As always, her vocals are impeccable. "You Call Me Yours" may be the best of the worship songs on the CD. It is nearly impossible not to feel like dancing when you listen to "Step Into the Joy" or the "Sweeter Medley."
Sandi closes the CD with "Grace Flows Down," sung with her daughter, Jenn Helvering. Make no mistake, Jenn is a talented vocalist in her own right and blends perfectly with her Mom.
I have just one complaint. Instead of re-doing her old songs, like on "Sandi's Medley," Sandi should record something new to fill up that spot on her CD.

After guest appearances on Guru and Talib Kweli, as well as the Red Hot + Riot collection, Les Nubians finally return with the follow-up to 1998's Princesses Nubiennes, the most popular French language album stateside in more than a decade. One Step Forward has the same Sade-meets-Zap Mama soul groove vibe that sisters Hélène and Célia Faussart are known for, but the duo adds a few new wrinkles to the mix this time around. There's a distinct reggae influence to songs "El Son Raggae" and "Brothers & Sisters," which features Morgan Heritage. Even though their voices are as sassy and sexy as ever, they sing a bit more in English, but French language gems "Amour A Mort" and "J'Veux D'la Musique," two of the album's strongest tracks, need little translation. For the most part though, One Step Forward is more self assured and richly textured, nicely refining a winning formula that will no doubt enchant the many fans of its predecessor. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cette excellent!.......2005-09-06

Les Nubians are French/Cameroonian sibling duo Célia and Hèléne Faussart. This is the follow up to their 1998 debut `Princesses Nubiennes', and following appearances on numerous CDs like the Fela Kuti tribute `Red Hot & Riot', `Bridging the gap' by the Black Eyed Peas, and `Streetsoul' by Guru to name a few.

They have a laid back tropical sound, which is a loose hybrid of neo soul, Jazz, African, and hip hop, sort of like Sade. As colourful and ornate as the markings on their faces on the CD photos. They usually sing in English, French and some Cameroonian language.

The soothing `J'veux d'la musique (tout le temps...)' is a prime example; soft and lilting with beautiful vocal harmonizing from the duo. Performed in French.

Lead off single is the sunny sounding `Temperature rising' sung in English and featuring a stylish rap from Talib Kweli.

The pair of `El son reggae' and `Brothers & Sisters' are reggae songs, the latter featuring reggae group Morgan Heritage (great voices) and flowing freely from French to English. A very bubbly catchy tune about brotherly love and giving thanks to the Almighty for His many gifts to us. Excellent guitar work and harmonizing. One of my favourites. Beautiful!

`Me & me' is really African sounding; the percussion, guitars, and the vocals in English, French, and some Cameroonian tongue. Very joyous sounding!

`Que le mot soit perle' is another standout. A delicate, lilting, tropical sounding song in French with a jazz feel, and all manner of drums tapped all over.

`Saravah' is another light breezy with a male voice adding spoken vocals here and there. Sung in French.

Closing 8 minute track `Immortel Cheikh Anta Diop' is a stunning piece; Half spoken/half sung in French, delicate percussion, a magical chorus with a dreamy feel, flutes drifting in and out, and tinklings of marimba played by Manu Dibango. Everything about this song is perfect.

What can I say?? A brilliant sophomore effort and I look forward to much more from these ladies.

4 out of 5 stars A few steps forward.......2005-05-06

If you enjoyed Les Nubians' Princesses Nubiennes, I cannot imagine how you could possibly not fall into the same mode with the follow up, One Step Forward. Even two years after its release, these ladies retain a zesty freshness with soft jazzy beats that take the listener to a completely new level with every play! As they did before, they alternate evenly between French and English, doing it so well it is easy to forget you may not know exactly what they're saying. What's even more intriguing is their ability to draw attention so effortlessly with pure vocals accompanied by funk and soul music. I can understand one mistaking the smoothness as boring, but one who appreciates the new sound blend that will last into the future, should check this one out! "La Guerre", "One Step Forward" and "Amour a Mort" are fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful and innovative sounds from beautiful voices..........2004-06-21

Les Nubians' sophomore effort did not fail to bring the same level of musical sophistication, sensitivity and haunting harmonies that the first album, "Les Princesses Nubiennes," was full of.

These two lovely and talented sisters take us on a tour of a cross-section of different sounds from various countries and cultures. They sing in French, Spanish and English, and feature hip hop, R&B, cuban son, reggae and Euro-pop in their music. Some of my favorite songs are "Temperature Rising" (featuring Talib Kweli), which blends hip hop with R&B and is very catchy, "El Son Reggae," which features a fusion of reggae and latin beats while the sisters sing in French and also dabble in Spanish, "Me & Me," which has a very folksy, poppy and melodious quality, and "Que Le Mot Soit Perle," which is just beautiful and very acoustic.

It is a shame these beautiful singers don't get more play time on the radio. I am sure it is hard to determine what category their music falls under. They are fusion of so many international sounds and styles. I really think that more people should take the time to get to know them, though!

4 out of 5 stars Oui!.......2004-04-23

Les Nubians' "One Step Forward" is a gumbo mix of underground soul, funky jazz, and dashes of reggae--with a welcome French twist. Featuring the vocals of sisters Helene and Celia Faussart, the CD is a seductive journey through many moods and textures. I'll be the first to admit that my French has been rusty since high school (some songs have French lyrics, others in English), but that didn't stop me from appreciating this disc's many riches. The tracks "Brothers and Sisters" and "El Son Reggae" are lively and deeply rooted in old school reggae, and "Que le Mot Soit Perle" is a quietly elegant number that stands out mainly due to its welcome touches of acoustic guitar and light percussion. Other points of interest are the 8 minute closer, the pretty "Immortel Cheikh Anta Diop" and the laid-back groove of "Unfaithful/Si Infidele." While some may call "One Step Forward" an attempt to make the duo more "accessible" to American listeners, I did find it an overall solid effort. Tres bien!

I m a bit disapointed with this new CD but nubians represent our country and our way to do music abroad (especially in USA) and i'm very proud of them...But princesses nubiennes (their first joint) was better of course...but they weren't afraid do do a thing a little bit diferent and they did not reproduce their first CD..

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound!.......2007-05-19

The sound quality is the best I've ever heard on a march CD -- bright and crisp -- no muffled cymbals here, but also no overly-brassy brass. I'm not too keen on some of the selections (The Virginians, Barnum and Bailey's), but others (like Americans We) are truly beautiful. Create your own playlist and go out for a walk to this music -- just great!

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise from the Army Band........2005-08-15

The Forward March CD is a great collection of marches. I have listened to the CD three times in the last few weeks and my students have replayed the CD over and over at the band room. A worthwhile addition to your library.

4 out of 5 stars Altissimo! Finally Has a Winner!.......2005-08-02

Finally a CD from Altissimo! of decent length with a solid march program. Instead of the usual patriotic dribble that we normally get on this label at last we have some real marches! Many of the selections are well known, but there are a few gems here. The performances are first-rate as to be expected by this premier band. For a change it looks like Altissimo! put together a winner from the extensive library of the bands' recorded music. Most likely none of the pieces played here are current recordings, but are taken from the bands own library which is what Altissimo! does with all of their products. In other words this is not an original recording. Still, the material is good and worthwhile. The program notes are better than usual as well. Altissimo! is slowly getting more professional in their products. Its been a gradual process indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Foward March! America's Great Marches.......2005-05-08

FORWARD MARCH!IS A NATIONAL TREASURE!

THE 17 GREATEST AMERICAN MARCHES? THEY ARE RECREATED ON THIS NEW CD BY THE U.S. ARMY BAND, "PERSHING'S OWN".

FOR 130 YEARS THESE 17 NATIONAL MARCHES HAVE "INSPIRED US, MARCHED TROOPS INTO FORMATION, CELEBRATED OUR NATIONAL PRIDE", AND ENTERTAINED US IN CONCERT. NOW FORWARD MARCH! SHOWCASES AMERICA'S GREATEST PATRIOTIC MARCHES-EACH MARCH WRITTEN WITH PRIDE BY AN AMERICAN AND PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY IN EVERY SENSE BY THE U.S. ARMY BAND UNDER LEADER AND COMMANDER COLONEL GARY F. LAMB.

COL LAMB HAS INCLUDED THE MARCHES THAT I THINK WOULD MAKE ANYONE'S "A LIST", SUCH AS OUR NATIONAL MARCH, SOUSA'S "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER" AND THE ESSENTIAL "WASHINGTON POST". BUT SINCE A CONSTANT 120 BEATS PER MINUTE "MARCH TEMPO" CAN BECOME MONOTONOUS(IF YOU'RE NOT MARCHING!), COL LAMB HAS INCLUDED THE COMPLEX (AND DIFFICULT!) "COMMANDO MARCH" BY SAMUEL BARBER(WHOSE MUSIC WAS USED IN THE MOVIE PLATOON) AND THE VERY SLIGHTLY SLOWER PACED "WASHINGTON GRAYS" , THE OLDEST MARCH IN THIS COLLECTION(1861) TO CHANGE THE PACE-LITERALLY. "WASHINGTON GRAYS", LIKE "COMMANDO MARCH" IS A CONCERT MARCH. IT HAS MANY CONTRASTS IN MOOD AND DYNAMICS, WHICH COL LAMB AND THE BAND DEMONSTRATE SUBERBLY, USING ANY OPPORTUNITY THE MUSIC PRESENTS FOR CREATING CONTRAST AND INTEREST --VERY IMPORTANT WHEN THE CD CONTAINS ONLY ONE GENRE! EACH MARCH IS TREATED WITH THE SAME CARE AND IN SOME PASSAGES ALMOST REVERENCE. VIRTUOSITY IS EFFORTLESS---THE HARD SOUNDS EASY! EXAMPLES ARE THE FAMOUS PICCOLOS IN "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER" , AND THE BARITONE/FRENCH HORNS(HEROIC INSTRUMENTS!) AS THEY ENJOY THE HIGH TESTOSTERONE OPENING FANFARE OF "THE VIRGINIANS" (THE LATTER MARCH IS THE YOUNGEST IN THE GROUP(1992), BUT IT CLEARLY DESERVES MEMBERSHIP.)

"THE CHIMES OF LIBERTY", "NATIONAL EMBLEM", AND "AMERICANS WE", WERE CLEARLY COMPOSED WITH NATIONAL PRIDE ---AND ON THIS CD THE PREMIER MUSICAL ORGANIZATION OF THE U.S. ARMY PERFORMS THEM WITH PARTICULAR PRIDE .

THESE "GREAT 17" MARCHES, OUR NATIONAL MUSICAL TREASURES, ARE HONORED ONCE MORE, AND INSPIRE US ONCE MORE THANKS TO THE SKILL AND DEVOTION OF THE U.S. ARMY BAND AND IT'S LEADER COLONEL LAMB. WELL DONE SOLDIERS!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND FORWARD MARCH!
RON BOWERS

5 out of 5 stars Forward March! .......2005-05-04

FORWARD MARCH! is an enjoyable and stimulating album which provides an unusual mix of traditional marches and not often heard compositions.

The United States Army Band is magnificent in its superb technical presentation of the broad spectrum of music contained on the CD and that unquestionably makes it worth acquiring.

Altissimo! Recordings once again educates listeners, as it did in HAIL TO THE CHIEF, by exposing them to pieces which have historical as well as musical significance. It carefully points out those works which are parade marches versus concert marches --- describing the Washington Grays as the "forerunner" of the latter.

The documentation which accompanies the CD provides a brief but tantalizing sense of who or what prompted the composition. Consequently, a far better appreciation for each selection is the result. The overall effect is a noteworthy collection of thoroughly enjoyable music for all to hear!

FORWARD MARCH! is a must for those who enjoy the uplifting of spirit which the march as a style of music provides!

Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Vastly Underrated Contestant produces excellent album........2007-05-20

Music albums are hit or miss these days. With so much focus on a "single", which can be played on a radio, the quality of an entire album can often be forgotton. Thankfully, with Ayla's first (of hopefully many more) albums is striking in the fact that on the album, not one song is of poor quality. Well, maybe Sugah is, but that is a cover of a song that was originally in the atrocious "From Justin to Kelly", so not her fault.

Know You Better: 7/10
Know you better was a curious choice for the first single. The song comes off great in some parts, cheesy in others. Not bad overall

I Quit: 7/10
I Quit, the second half of the first single, is very similar to the first song, in that when Ayla is singing it sounds great, but that the unnecessary "da da da yeahs" add unnecessary cheesiness.

Sugah: 6/10
Probably the worst song on the album (as well as the only cover), Sugah is cheesy almost the entire way through, though the lyrics are nice.

Forward: 10/10
Forward is a masterpeice. This is Ayla showing off the very best of her considerable vocals, and it seems unbelieveable that the song was recorded in under 5 days.

Breaking Away: 8/10
Breaking Away is a solid song, but as the "sports anthem song" as which it is billed, it seems out of place. However, the entire song does come off very nice and enjoyable to listen to.

Falling into You: 9/10
One of the better songs on the album, Falling into you is probably the most radio-ready also. With it's slight R&B touch on the pleasant pop vocal, it makes for very easy listening while still sounding hip.

Thanks to you: 9/10
Ayla's personal thank-you to her fans is the closest Ayla comes to rock on the album, and a very nice job it does as well, adding yet another touch of variety that Falling into you had already done.

Miles Away: 8.5/10
Miles away is a good song made more pleasent by the fact that is is done primarily acapella. However, it is too short, and made me wish there was more to it.

10 cent wings: 9/10
This is the most emotional song on the album, and Ayla sings it with superb tenderness. It would be the best song on the album....but for some odd reason, the writers chose to implement an unnecessary backbeat to the song, which distracts from the great Ayla-piano combo the song had going.

All in all, a fine album, with no song scoring under a 7.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2007-03-13

I like all the songs on this CD, especially the title song FORWARD - it is a beatiful song of courage and hope.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-02-03

Ayla Brown was my favorite of Season five of AI and was sad when she was eliminated. This is a great CD. Love it.

To all of you idiots saying ugly things about my girl, Ayla; stfu, ydamf's.

4 out of 5 stars SLEEPER OF THE YEAR.......2006-12-30

I am simply shocked by some of the reviews I've read here - obviously from ill-willed youths totally into so much of the crap music that overwhelms the pop/rock scene these days. This album is totally entertaining, pleasing, and shows talent and ability that I (and many of us) knew was apparent when they so eagerly boosted her off the show too early. These songs, along with her singing ability totally blows away some very popular artists - such as Britney and Jessica. Ayla may not be Katherine, but she shines with talent in my eyes, and even my 20-yr old daughter. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars 6 star Album.......2006-12-24

Ayla is a great role model for the young and old. She's only 18 and she's already so mature. This album obviously proves all of that. The entire album is awesome. I love and enjoy every day each song of the CD with the exception of two songs, but hey, you can't always get a perfect CD that everyone will adore.

I gave this CD five stars because I totally think it deserves it. Well, actually that was a lie because I believe it deserves six stars but unfortunatly that's not one of the ratings. Believe me when I say that when you buy this album you won't regret it. You are not wasting your money by buying it. The whole CD brings out her personality. Ayla is a person who loves her fans and actually cares about them and isn't all fake towards them. If you don't support her or aren't a fan of her this CD will make you want to become one. If you don't have this album, you're missing out!.....BIG TIME! :)

Voted musician of the year in his native Wisconsin, Willy Porter combines stellar guitar skills with a gruff sincerity to create convincing songs about love, loss, and mystery. Not easy to pigeonhole, Porter has the talent that fits Six Degrees Records' stated goal of "breaking down the walls between the genres, creating unique, accessible recordings that combine elements from many worlds." Elements in Porter's songs range from earthy, heartfelt pop to mild funk imbued with a twinge of country. His primary appeal is his voice, which has a little Darius Rucker, a little Tracy Chapman, and a lot of earnest conviction. On Falling Forward's only instrumental cut, "Road Bone," his 12-string workout recalls the work of Leo Kottke and John Fahey. Willy Porter is a musician with a lot going for him. --Wally Shoup

5 out of 5 stars I listen to this Willie Porter CD and I am transported.......2007-05-19

I have never written a music review, but this music by Willie Porter transports me (can I say this?) to a heavenly place. I feel stoned without smoking anything. Pure happiness. I saw Willie sing live and loved it, loved him, but this is the one CD that really captures his magic. I wish he could write more music like this, but at least I have this music, I turn to it often, in times of happiness and when I need a lift.

4 out of 5 stars Willy's evolution continues into songs for films.......2004-09-29

Willy Porter's 3rd studio album, "Falling Forward," shows that his sound continues to evolve. His 1st album, "The Trees Have Soul," is a fingerstylist's wet dream, but the memorable choruses provided hints of Willy's ability to write more pop/rock oriented songs. The follow-up to that album, "Dog Eared Dream," showed a significant shift in Willy's sound away from the guitar pyrotechnics toward a more refined pop/rock sound that would appeal to a wider audience. "Falling Forward" is a continuation of that trend, as Willy surrounds himself with a more diverse group of musicians and takes advantage of studio magic to smooth over his sound. Knox Chandler, who plays many of the fill-in guitar parts and loops, is largely responsible, as he deftly fills in the background space with neat, unusual guitar sounds on songs like "Infinity." Other so-called "modern" instruments are also present, such as programmed drums, and Willy also nicely incorporates violins and cellos on several songs. There aren't any songs that are radio-ready, and only a few that could be re-arranged for radio, but many of them would fit well on a film soundtrack.

"Mystery": a standout track. Has a nice intro and a memorable chorus. This song has radio potential, but not in its current form. It's too bad that a producer didn't make this more of a "single" and hack the scat middle section that would have been better in a live version and edit the intro (which, though nice, is a bit long). Some backing vocals in the chorus are necessary.

"Cut the Rope": Willy uses electric and acoustic quite nicely on this one. You can also really hear the evolution of his vocals from the earlier albums. Nice chorus.

"The Line": Pleasant song, but somewhat forgettable. Decent chorus

"Paper Airplane": Another standout track, perhaps the best on the album. The song is inspired by a couple he saw making "whoopee" out the window in an apartment building across from his own. It features a great vocal performance, and fantastic guitar. On this song in particular, you can really hear how Willy has learned to fill in the holes of songs (something he could have used on "Cool Water" on the last album, though we're not likely to get a third version of that one). Of all the songs on the album, this would be my top choice for a film soundtrack.

"Infinity": A great mellow song where again you can hear Knox Chandler's influence with his guitar loops.

"Sister": Starts off promisingly with a nice funky acoustic guitar line. The chorus is alright, but mostly forgettable. Overall, the song isn't all that catchy, but it's pleasant enough. The prototypical "album track."

"Sowelu": Nice chorus on this, but the verses are nothing special. Another "album track."

"Tribe": This might be fun live, but doesn't do it for me on the album. I usually skip it.

"Hard": Starts off nicely with a harmonica (I think?) and piano combination, but doesn't really go anywhere. Another "album track."

"Anonymous Caller": Pleasant, but forgettable

"Somebody Else": Pleasant, but forgettable

RECOMMENDATION:
It's hard to say if I would recommend this album over "Dog Eared Dream." If you're really into the guitar pyrotechnics/fingerstyle playing, I would actually recommend "The Trees Have Soul." But if you're just more of a pop/rock fan, I would probably recommend this CD over "Dog Eared Dream" but by a slim margin. This album has a nice, even sound to it and represents the evolution of Willy's sound. Fans of pop/rock would think the songs are mostly pleasant, with "Mystery" and "Paper Airplane" as the ones you'd keep going back to hear.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING, AMAZING FIVE STAR ARTIST.......2004-03-25

How this genius of a musician has remained, as another reviewer describes ~ "the greatest musician you have never heard of" ~ has to be one of the music industry's greatest mysteries. Selfishly, as a fan, it is somewhat of a blessing; seeing Willy perform in a smaller, intimate setting defies description. The experience is something I will always treasure once the big time inevitably comes a knockin'. Everyone I have turned on to his music either through listening to CDs or attending concerts has been summarily blown away. He is so talented that he actually sounds even more amazing live. I'm pretty sure there are no words yet developed in the English language, or any language for that matter, sufficient to describe the talent rolled into this man's singing/songrwiting/guitar playing performance. This CD in particular, is amazing; not a song in the bunch worthy of a skip over ~ in fact this is one of those rare gems of a CD that is worthy of listening to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Hits the target while defying categories.......2004-02-24

Willy Porter is one of the best relatively unknown musicians working today. The songs on this recording range from mellow acoustic numbers to more electrified numbers with a groove. Willy can play everything from bluegrass and roots folk to funk and jazz, and defies easy labels. On one occasion I watched amazed as a little ditty he was playing at between tunes turned into a 5 minute funk groove with a mesmerizing lyrics and playing, all totally improvised. This is a consumate musician and original song writer. He is one of those rare artists that can paint a commplete sonic image that the audience can share, and yet remain humble and full of down to earth humor.

5 out of 5 stars Great purchase for any music lover.......2004-01-11

Willy Porter is a great singer/songwriter. He should have become a star in today's culture not soon enough. He deserves all the praises he receives. Buy this album and you will see the greatness that comes from the mind of Willy Porter.

If young Thomas Newman hasn't reinvented the art of film scoring, he's certainly bent and hammered many of its most shopworn clichés into refreshing new musical elements. As he did with similar work for American Beauty and Erin Brockovich, Newman's music suffuses the characters and plot of director Mimi Leder's socially conscious melodrama with an almost stealthy sense of mood and emotion. Once again using his small studio ensemble to great effect, Newman provides a modern, largely rhythmic soundscape, one whose electronically synthesized elements blend so well with his organic sounds as to be utterly seamless. And if there's a familiarity creeping into his work, it's only because Newman--like all the greats--has found such a distinct, effective musical voice. Equally important here, the composer also remembers the Newman family's daunting Hollywood roots--father Alfred, brother David, uncles Lionel and Emil, cousin Randy--and reinforces the film's sensitive nature with quiet, more traditional pastoral orchestral passages, frequently with his own spare solo piano taking the lead. Singer Jane Siberry's "Calling All Angels" closes the album out with appropriate grace and beauty. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars A decent listening that doesn't quite pay off.......2002-12-24

First off I want to say Happy Holidays to everyone. Thomas Newman is one of the most experimental composers out there. His use of melodies and harmonies are unlike any other and his sound is fresh and unique. As usual, with Thomas Newman, I like to list all of the instruments that he uses in his scores, most of them you have probably never heard of. For Pay It Forward, he uses an electric autoharp, dutar, guitars, song bells, wave drums, processed loops, tap eko gate 1 (what the heck is that?), freeze 3 (??), prepared guitars (I guess the other ones are not prepared), alto flute, spit rhythms (I don't even want to know), processed glass (??), slow tubes (unlike the fast ones I suppose), phonographs, an ewi, a processed saz (??), and a piano (finally, something I know). A unique blend of instruments as you can see. There are 2 kinds of music found in the soundtrack. The first is upbeat and lively with plenty of percussion sounds and the use of the odd instrumentation listed above. The second is soft and more laid back with the piano carrying most of the music. The theme itself is found in "Possibility", "Tardiness", and "Desert Drive" and contains the more upbeat type of music described with guitars, piano, and off beat percussion. Other noteworthy cues include the soft piano tracks, including "Fixture Vodka", "One Kiss", "Night and Day and Night", and "Sleepover". Great orchestral music is found in "In Recovery", which Newman does the best at. Most of the rest of the score contains mainly filler music with lots of sound effect related sounds in it. The song "Calling All Angels" by Jane Siberry doesn't really sound much like Angels are being called to me. But, the score is okay and is not Newman's best. Still, a decent listenings worth and that's about it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2002-06-05

I like this soundtrack. In particular the track "Possibility". I'm sure I've heard this song in another movie though. I've searched through other soundtracks by Thomas Newman but I can't find it anywhere. Anyway, this and the whole score for the movie creates a great mood for the movie and is great to listen to as an album.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the money.......2002-01-31

If you love Thomas Newman, then you'll love Pay It Forward. If you've never heard his stuff, I highly recommend him. Pay It Forward is wide-ranging, almost eclectic, but all of his themes blend together wonderfully. I especially love the softer orchestral themes. I do wish the songs were longer, but if you've watched the movie, then you know that those were the full lengths of music found in the film. The CD is well worth the money I paid for it, and is one of the few CDs I have that I can listen to constantly.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Album.......2006-10-29

I've waited forever to hear this on CD!!!!!!!!!
A bunch of studio musicians that played on so many pop albums including Carol King's Tapestry come together to make the most unbelievable fusion album of all time. This album is the lost gem of the seventies. Fusion with a psychedelic tinge to it that you will play over and over. Buy it play it, but get it now before it's gone! You won't regret it.
Now release the first on CD too.

The CSNY name carries disproportionate weight considering the quartet has produced a grand total of three studio albums and one live set over the course of three decades. Of course, the first studio LP, 1969's Deja Vu, is one of the touchstones of Woodstock-era rock. Nearly two decades passed before the foursome cut the forgettable American Dream. Unfortunately, Looking Forward owes more to the unfocused latter (not to mention CSN's unremarkable recent output) than the vital Deja Vu. It's telling that three of the four Neil Young tracks (as well as Stephen Stills's above par "Faith in Me") were produced by longtime Young confederate Ben Keith while the rest of the album is credited to CSNY. The controlling hand Young maintains on his own material pays off with two of the best numbers here--the Harvest Moon-like title track and "Slowpoke." Graham Nash fares well with characteristically melodic efforts, but Stills and David Crosby stumble on the awkwardly bellicose "Seen Enough" and "Stand and Be Counted," missteps that throw the entire set off course. ----Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Technical problem with my copy.......2007-05-18

Does anybody have a copy of "Looking Forward" with sound distortion in the first track (FAITH IN ME)? My copy was purchased as soon as released, in 1999 (first generation copy), US edition. "Faith in Me" sounds horrible as happens when the audio signal exceeds speakers or amplifier limits. No troubles with other tracks. If somebody have any information about error in 1st pressing, please let me know.

By the way, in my humble opinion "Looking Forward" is a nice album and a classical moment of reunion. 4 stars only for the problem mentioned.

3 out of 5 stars Some good songs and some not so good songs.......2007-03-31

Better than American Dream and Live It Up, but not as strong as After The Storm. Of course it doesn't compare to their classic early stuff. It has some good songs and some junk. While "Seen Enough" is a pretty good tune, I am tired of Stills' preaching against the evil white man. Here's a news flash, their are good and bad people of every race and ethnic group! It's a pitty that a "group" that had such potential has turned into a tired parody of itself. CSN& (rarely) Y had the potential to become THE group of the 70s, but egos got in the way. Unfortunately instead of becoming the group, CSN&Y became a collection solo artists who got together once or twice a decade to give their solo careers a shot in the arm. What a sad legacy for a budding supergroup that produced standards like Crosby, Stills, and Nash (the first album) and Deja Vu.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get Enough!!.......2006-11-08

Thank you for always coming thru with the music we love. This is a wonderful CD, we received it very quickly and love the music

3 out of 5 stars For The Diehard Only.........2006-10-15

This is not bad musically (how could anything by such musicians be horrible?), but it isn't remarkable at all.

This is not even worthy of comparison with Deja Vu, and perhaps its not worth purchasing, though if you are a real CSNY fan, you might add it to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars PLEASE! DON'T LET IT END THIS WAY!.......2005-11-28

I do not know what happened; but this is a sad album. Back in 1970 and 1971, CSNY was white hot-probably the best thing going in America. Along with STICKY FINGERS, their live 4 WAY STREET ALBUM was the soundtrack to the summer of 1971. Then for reasons unclear, our heroes couldn't get together or get along. Rumors flared up all throughout the 1970's of a resumption of CSNY greatness-tracks were laid down for a new album.

AMERICAN DREAM appeared years later in 1988. Generally agreed that the record was made for all the wrong reasons. Crosby cleaned himself off drugs and Neil kept his promise to come back if crack-smokin' David got help.

This album was made 11 years after that. I still can't tell what they were thinking. The only one bringing anything to the party was Young. His four songs are worthwhile in themselves. But the rest of the album just doesn't cut it. Leaving aside the overall political cast of these songs, what strikes you is that somehow they could not blend their voices together as they once could. The mix is all off. At times, the blend of voices is actually unpleasant.

The one exception is the last song. "Sanibel" has just about everything we've come to know and love about CSNY. The blend is excellent and the tone is loving and sweet. They should have gone back and re-recorded everything else with this re-discovery of what made them so special.

I hope someday CSNY will come back together and make the album we all know they can. I wouldn't want such a fantastic band end this way.
