5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

5 out of 5 stars changed my taste in music.......2007-02-04

Carnival is one of my favorite Bikini Kill songs and it's simply amazing. A punk rock classic. And so is this band and The CD Version of the First Two Records. Unfortunately, very few have even heard about it nowadays and some who have don't wanna listen to bikini Kill because of all the (false) accusations the band got back in their heyday. Double Dare Ya is an anthem, lyrically and musically. Jigsaw Youth is catchy and raw. White Boy and Suck My Left One brilliant songs with a message. However, one thing on this album bugs me. It's the line in the lyrics of the otherwise great track, Liar, about eating meat. Now, I can understand vegetarians but this is way, way out of line. Still, in the bigger picture, it's a just a blunder, and hopefully not meant in all seriousness. It was after I discovered this album back as a kid and it just blew me away that my musical horizons broadened drastically (before Bikini Kill, I used to concentrate mostly on mainstream). So for me, it has a sentimental value of a sort but, really, it is a great offering from one of the bands that kept punk from dying throughout the 90s.

5 out of 5 stars Bikini Kill-cd version of the first two records.......2007-01-09

I purchased this as a gift for someone else. As far as delivery and being in stock, excellent job. The person I purchased it for thoroughly enjoys it. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Does it scare you boy.......2005-12-07

You don't have to be a feminist to enjoy this. It's about having the guts to stand up for what you believe in and never letting people trample over you. Be the thorn in their foot that makes them so sorry they tried. Bikini Kill has 4 albums and this is the best, even though they are all amazingly wonderful.

~The Songs~

1. Double Dare Ya- a very feminist start, "dare you to be want you want"

2. Liar- "you profit from the lie" in your face angry

3. Carnival- I love kathleen's voice, angry and powerful, this song makes me want to ride on the ferris wheel

4. Suck My Left One- the title speaks for itself, pretty sick to think some dads really act this way

5. Feels Blind- a little toned down, but only enough to prove kathleen's voice can be pretty too

6. Thurston Hearts the Who- this is a dumb song, they should have left it off the album

7. White boy- "white boy, don't cry, just die" if you are mad at a guy, Bikini Kill is the music to play

8. This in Not a Test- alright song

9. Don't Need You- play him this song and feed him cyanide

10. Jigsaw Youth- deep lyrics, the article is good too

11. Resist Psychic Death- ok

12. Rebel Girl- this song is on 3 of their 4 albums b/c it's a VERY good song, but this version is a little drunken. maybe that's why it's crossed out on the listing. the versions on "Pussywhipped" and "Singles" are much better

13. Outta Me- beautiful ending song, different from the rest of the album

5 out of 5 stars Your world has taught me nothing........2004-10-08

I'm not sure if these are the first two records that started riot grrrl, but I do know it did have a major influence on the scene. For those who don't know, riot grrrl (also spelled as just riot grrl) is a form of hardcore punk rock music, with militant feminist lyrics. It began and then died (having gotten unwanted attention from the media) in the early '90s. The record first starts off with 'Double Dare Ya' an urge for women to take control of their equal rights, which has one of my favorite lines 'Gotta listen to what the Man says/time to make his stomach burn'. 'Liar' is a song that attacks rapists and also mocks the typical redneck macho man (eat meat/hate blacks/beat your f*cking wife/it's all the same thing). 'Carnival' is an interesting song with its skipping drumbeat, while 'Thurston Hearts The Who' has Tobi reading a negative review which puts down the band, while Kathleen mocks the reviewer. 'White Boy' is another song which deals with rape, and 'Don't Need You' is a powerful feminist anthem. The CD closes with 'Outta Me' which sounds almost like a slow and sad '60s pop song. A striking contrast compared to the other songs. Included in the CD booklet is political essay written by Kathleen. Great CD, if you feel like there is a lack of feminist perspective in music nowadays, definately pick this up.

4 out of 5 stars we want REVOLUTION!.......2003-08-01

K, so BK is my favorite band so obviously I won't be too hard on them. This is probably my second favorite CD of theirs, I do prefer "Pussywhipped" but this one is great too. A lot more aggressive than later releases and more catchy songs.

1) Double Dare Ya- pretty good... eh, not much to say about that
2) Liar- EXCELLENT punky song, don't know about the random screaming that happens later in the track though
3) Carnival- very neat song, interesting drumbeat
4) Suck My Left One- MARVELLOUS!
5) Feels Blind- AHHHHHHH I HATE THIS SONG! i skip it every time
6) Thurston Hearts...- a lot of people don't like this song, but i think it's funny... they basically make fun of a reviewer who was making fun of them
7) White Boy- really good song, good message
8) This is Not a Test- kinda repetitive..mediocre
9) Don't Need You- righteous ... power anthem
10) Jigsaw Youth- this song kinda bugs me
11) Resist Psychic Death- uh... what the hell is this song?
12) Rebel Girl- the worst rendition of this song ever! come on Kathleen, what were you thinking?
13) Outta Me- not very special

so there you have it, my wonderful unwanted, unrequested thoughts on this album. g'night.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars German Screamo starts with WATERDOWN.......2003-02-18

yeah!, maybe this guys aren't that original if we compare them with their labelmates Thursday/Taking back sunday, etc. but if we compare them with european emo/Screamo hardcore bands, they are even the fathers of something they do not what it means.
When i first chacked this album, i was like, humm same stuff like atreyu, poison the well, mixed with finch, fairweather, even blindside and deftones a little bit. but i was checking the full album, and i realize how good musicians are they, the two-same-time melodic and scraming vocals at the verses of the songs blow my head off, plus their melodic chorus, all this mixed with a very special hardcore music that goes in the same mood as atreyu, with thursday, glassjaw...anyway, this cd is AWESOME, at least for me, it's simple, it's original, and it blow my head off! that's enaough for me to listen it, till my cd walkman batteries get dry!

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2003-02-10

I first heard this band on a Victory sampler, and for me they were far and away the best thing on there. The CD is surprisingly diverse, too much so to be lumped solely in the "emo" category. The band do use the sung versus screamed dual vocal attack at times, which is probably where the emo/Thursday comparisons comes from. There are however other influences at work, from glam to angular punk to straight up rock and roll.
A feature of this release is the fact that there is not a bad song on it, and it gets better as it goes along. "Corporate Identity" reminds me of At The Drive In at their best, "Picketline" is simply blistering, and the last song (sung I presume in their native German) takes the riff from the Stooges "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog" and gives it a fair throttling.
There is far more thought contained within the lyrics than you would expect, and the fact that they are German and as such not writing in their main language makes the songwriting quality all the more impressive. Give these guys a chance, you won't be disappointed. If they were from the US or the UK, they would already be huge. Hopefully after the release of their upcoming CD they will be.

3 out of 5 stars German Emo-Core, gotta love it.......2001-08-01

Wow. The Germans discovered some good music. This is a weird emo cd to say the least. Coming off sounding like a cross between, Thursday, In Flames, and The Deftones. Sometimes this strange mixture seems to work, sometimes it comes off as annoying. Lyrics are as intelligent as you could imagine on an emo disc. "impress me" is a very good song however!

4 out of 5 stars Good major label debut.......2001-07-07

Having heard Waterdown before and thought they were intresting, I thought I'd try em out. I wasn't let down. They play a brand of emotional hardcore with a popish twist. Can't compare them to anyone, although they do sound like Thursday. "Impress Me" and "Not Today" are melodic hardcore at it's finest. Pick up this cd today.

Amazon.com essential recording

Purcell fans will delight in this collection of 30 of his 85 secular songs. Barbara Bonney, singing with ease and controlled fervor, steals the recording with her endearing sound and impeccable musicianship. Soprano Susan Gritton brings a more dramatic perspective, singing with zest and a little edge that almost, but never quite, grates. Sometimes, however, she vibrates mildly out of control. Tenors Charles Daniels and Roger Covey-Crump sing with grace, joviality, and tenderness, but both are a little shallow throughout the bottom. Countertenor James Bowman occasionally stumbles with intonation, but always lands standing upright. This buffet of various voices captivates the listener's attention span, totally avoiding potential monotony. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Purcell stole my heart.......2001-02-08

Alas, with the help of phenomenally expressive singers on this CD, Purcell has stolen my heart. I listened to this CD a few times then immediately emptied my pocketbook to the nearest consort putting on a Purcell concert. Such poverty is love.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?
