Best of the Beast
Best of the Beast
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The cover of the Iron Maiden retrospective Best of the Beast features the band's zombie mascot Eddie in seven of the various ghastly guises he assumed for the band's records. The image conveys volumes about the group's brash, visual form of heavy metal. Starting with Maiden's most well known track "Number of the Beast" (which was actually featured on the band's third album), the disc progresses through eight singles recorded during the height of its career and a handful of less memorable cuts that followed its glory years. Galloping beats, twin guitar leads, and eardrum-shattering vocals abound, along with lyrics that could have been plucked straight from the Tales of the Crypt comic books. Overall, a valid collection, but it suffers from the omission of classics like "Die with Your Boots On," "Flight of Icarus," and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." --Jon Wiederhorn

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Disney's greatest hits, volum 3.......2007-05-13
This is one of the better volums for kids and for those who are
above 18 but still have some kid in them
Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07
Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.
Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18
I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.
Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21
I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!
Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11
This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

This was a gift and the receipant loves it. Amazon responded to my order in above average time and I will continue to buy through their website.
Not for the serious flautist.......2006-06-10
Most of the tracks on this CD consist of saccharine fluff, such as Disney, show-tunes, etc. If I buy a flute recording, I want to hear some serious music, not this ghastly schmaltz. And I hate to say it, I'm not a huge fan of Galway's playing style. It's too light and airy, just on the edge of going into overtones. He overuses his vibrato, especially on the higher notes. When you want them to just smoothly soar with rich tone, they just sort of flutter about. He does have impeccable technique and speed, but his tone leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. Seek out another artist!
The Very Best of James Galway.......2005-09-23
Really is one of the best of James Galway, if not the very best. Easy listening, soothing, relaxing - easy to enjoy
Lightweight.......2005-08-24
Admirers of James Galway as a superb classical flutist, of whom I am one, should be forewarned that this 2002 release has been packaged by the mass merchandisers for the "crossover" crowd and the mass market: there's slim pickin's here for serious music lovers. The first CD contains brief, lightweight classical "hits" in "arranged" versions, basically encore bonbons, while almost the entire second CD is devoted to ephemeral, forgettable pop fluff. There's not much of substance here; given Galway's vast (over 50 recordings) discography, the classical music lover would be well advised to look elsewhere.

Album Description
Aussie edition of 1996 compilation that's out-of-print domestically. At nearly 78 minutes in length, the disc contains many of the group's expected headbanging highlights. The package skips over Paul Di'Anno-era material, favoring songs culled from the Bruce Dickinson-led lineup. Favorites like 'The Number of the Beast,' 'Aces High,' 'Be Quick or Be Dead,' 'Wasted Years,' 'The Trooper,' 'Run to the Hills,' & 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' are all featured. The collection also includes are a pair of tracks that feature Dickinson's short-lived replacement, 'Blaze' Bayley, 'Man on the Edge' & 'Virus.'
Customer Reviews:
Great Overview of Maiden.......2007-07-26
The only drawback to this collection is the two tracks without lead singer Bruce Dickinson are clearly inferior to the rest. Would have rather had all tracks sung by Dickinson. Other than that, great collection!
Only place to find 'Virus'..........2007-01-18
I have most of Maiden's music already, but this is nice CD to have if you are starting to get into the band. I think 'Virus' might have been released as a single, but it doesn't appear on any album.
don't order this cd.......2003-11-07
I'm sure this is an awesome cd, but I wouldn't recomend ordering from Amazon because their shipping is horrible. I ordered this cd 2 months ago, it was supposed to be here within at most a month. That's all I have to say about this cd. It's a sweet greatest hits album but maybe go somewhere else to buy it.
THE RECIPE IS ON HAND.......2002-09-10
Cartoonish songs that wears out a formula so exausted by now.If you have to buy one,why not this one.The problem is that we were fifteen such a long time ago.I suggest to the mothers and fathers that they buy this to their timid son to arouse his listening sensibility.Am i kidding you here?I actually like THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST and THE TROOPER a lot.As for the rest,it is a matter of one's tolerance. But the father suddently remembering his younger days burst into tears saying isn't this a rip off of the old BLACK SABBATH albums? You know sometimes fathers can get to the point too.
excellent.......2002-08-24
This is the first thing I ever heard by Maiden . I quite hated it at first but as time passed I began to understand it better .
One fine day I realised it was great . Tracks like The clairvoyant, the trooper, virus, man on the edge, fear of the dark, hallowed be thy name ,aces high,be quick or be dead, the evil that men do certainly deserved to be here .They are all masterpieces. I dont know how Bring your Daughter to the slaughter ever got here . God knows what he's even talking about. That 's pretty much junk . So is running free . But that's excusable , being on thier first album. Otherwise its a great collection . Rime of the Ancient Mariner ought to have been here . so ought also Wrathchild or Killers or powerslave.

A nicely packaged selection of the finest recorded moments of Leytonstone's finest export has got to be something of an irresistible proposition. And Best of the Beast covers all available bases by consolidating material from every stage of the Maiden's illustrious career. From the early Paul Di'Anno-fronted classics through the Bruce Dickinson glory days ("Run to the Hills") to the leather-lunged epic power of the Blaze Bayley period ("Virus"), Best of the Beast stands as a monumental testament to the grandiose immensity of Steve Harris's songwriting vision. The band's ensemble interplay is nothing short of breathtaking, and the hits just keep on coming at you with a vengeance. "Be Quick or Be Dead," "Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter," "The Evil that Men Do"--all of these and more are on hand to give your eardrums the kind of aural workout that they won't soon forget. --Ian Fortnam

Customer Reviews:
Best 1-Disc Compilation out there and Remastered to Boot!.......2005-12-01
Just like the other reviewers here I am stumped as to how they left out key tracks like "Flight of the Icarus" but I guess to put out just a 1-disc version of Iron Maiden's best stuff someone had to make a call what to leave out even though we may not agree.
What is clear is that this disc is not meant for the die-hard fan; for that they released the 2-disc version for you and they expected you to have all the albums anyway. This disc is clearly aimed at those who had never heard the band before and don't want to go broke having to get all the albums let alone a 2-disc compilation. The record company were looking at converting/recruiting new fans. I know because I was one of them.
As a guitarist who started out learning the licks of many greats like Joe Satriani, I was intrigued when I read in one of Joe's instruction books about the importance of Iron Maiden's guitarists to the development of speed metal and to even what HE plays! Joe knows best, I thought, and so I dutifully went and got this album. I had heard "Flight of the Icarus" before and I thought it was great but it wasn't enough to make me want to go get all their albums and so I for one was pleased to find this disc in the store.
I was simply blown away at the complexity of the musical ideas (this is heavy metal for goodness sakes, I thought), the great speed and dexterity of the guitarists and indeed the whole rhythm section. Bruce's voice quality goes without saying and really, 16 tracks on a 77 min 53 secs long disc that is remastered albeit not so well is a great bargain! The cd liner notes are fantastic as well as they are full colour and have photos and all the lyrics! The disc itself is a picture disc with great colour depictions of Eddie!
For those of you who like me were/are not diehard fans but want to get a not-so-short sampler of the band or if you are an aspiring speed metal guitarist, this is essential listening. Now, for me, I'll start looking for a well-packaged and remastered version of the "Piece of Mind" album so that I can get my beloved "Flight of the Icarus!"
A good start for beginners.......2005-03-22
This was the CD that got me into Iron Maiden. My first introduction to them was through Fear of the Dark, which, despite one or two good songs, turned me off on the band all together.
However, upon listening through this CD and gaining a genuine appreciation for the band, I've started collecting their other great albums and have discovered how great this band truly is.
No single CD is going capture every great song from a prolific band such as 'Maiden. Some of my favorites, such as "Flight of the Icarus" and "Murders in the Rue Morgue" are two of the glaring omissions. However, for those who want to sample the band, this a great start. If you're like me, you'll end up wanting more. But that's a good thing.
horrible compilation, like swiss cheese.......2004-11-28
This "greatest hits" cd from iron maiden is so lacking in important material, missing so much and having horrible/unimportant songs that it resembles swiss cheese.
here is what a one cd iron maiden compilation SHOULD BE!
1 running free
2 iron maiden
3 wrath child
4 killers
5 number of the beast
6 run to the hills
7 hallowed be thy name
8 flight of icaruis (did i spell that right?)
9 the trooper
10 die with your boots on
11 aces high
12 two minutes to midnight
13 the duelists
14 wasted years
15 stanger in a strange land
16 heaven can wait
17 can i play with madness
18 infinite dreams
19 7th son of a 7th son
20 holy smoke
todays cd's could definatly fit that amount on it, go get a cd that can hold about 90 minutes or so and burn this on to it.
Great Compilation.......2004-10-23
I was surprised that BEST OF THE BEAST had a single disc version, since the double disc version is definitive.
This is one overview of the MAIDENs, and the compilation of the top 20 on the Eddie Game CD was actually voted on, so it is representative of fans at the time that was produced.
If you can get it, EDDIE'S ARCHIVES is also a great compilation overview, as is the VIDEO compilation DVD with some superb 3D graphics work.
On top of that, LIVE IN RIO is a brilliant best of view.
Iron Maiden is still one of the greats in this genre; very few of the current kids bands come close to the consistent quality Maiden has, and this applies to most of the surviving Hard Rock bands from the 70s and 80s, especially DIO ... the Voice of metal; Bruce is great, but still second to the master vocalist DIO.
Fills up the disc well, but still lacking.......2004-03-06
Best Of The Beast(1999). Iron Maiden's first best-of collection.
[NOTE: THIS REVIEW COVERS THE SINGLE-DISC COMPILATION SPECIFICALLY]
Ever since the early 80s, Iron Maiden rose up and became a permanent staple in heavy metal music. They played stunning melodies, catchy hooks, and dexteritous riffs to many anthems and built up a solid fanbase by the late 80s. Consisting of guitar duo Adrian Smith & Dave Murray, vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris, and drummer Nicko McBrain, Iron Maiden stand out as one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time. My favorite classic heavy metal band is actually Judas Priest, but I certainly always give my props to Iron Maiden as they are some of the greatest musicians to ever grace the heavy metal scene. They do play with more precision and showcase more complex songwriting than virtually ANY other heavy metal band of their time. They managed to create an amazing streak of excellent albums throughout the 80s, until they started getting worse in the early 90s. For most of that decade, Iron Maiden were flopping around like fish in a barrel until the late 90s when all the classic bandmembers reunited. Around that time, they released Best Of The Beast, the first (but not the last) compilation featuring their main key hits between the bandmembers and the fans. The double-disc collection covers a decent amount of material, but this single disc version is quite lacking. Read on for an in-depth look at the tracks included from their corresponding albums:
IRON MAIDEN(1980)
KILLERS(1981)
TRACKS: none from either album (but does contain Running Free from Live After Death)
COMMENTS: How could there be no tracks from these two albums?? They were the foundation on which Iron Maiden became a metal force! This means that there is no Wrathchild, Sanctuary, Phantom Of The Opera, or Prowler (Some of these songs are included on the double-disc version however). As good as Live After Death is, Running Free should've been the original version with Di'Anno on the vocals. No Di'Anno era songs brings this compilation's rating way down.
NUMBER OF THE BEAST(1982)
TRACKS: Number of the Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name, and Run To The Hills
COMMENTS: These three songs have certainly become fan-favorites, and represent the album well. I also liked Prisoner and 22 Acacia Avenue, but these picks are sufficient.
PIECE OF MIND(1983)
TRACKS: The Trooper
COMMENTS: The Trooper is an excellent song which rightfully deserves its place on here, but WHY IS IT THE ONLY TRACK INCLUDED?? Where are Flight Of Icarus and Where Eagles Dare (my all-time favorite Maiden song)? This is disappointing because POM contains many tracks which deserve recognition (NOTE: Where Eagles Dare is on the double-disc set).
POWERSLAVE(1984)
TRACKS: Aces High and Two Minutes To Midnight
COMMENTS: Aces High is an excellent song and certainly one of my favorite early Maiden tracks. Two Minutes To Midnight on the other hand, is an okay song, but one of the most overrated Maiden songs of all time. I was never really a big fan of it. Flash Of The Blade would have been a better choice.
SOMEWHERE IN TIME(1986)
TRACKS: Wasted Years
COMMENTS: Glad they included the band's best commercial anthem rocker, BUT THIS ALBUM HAS SO MANY FORGOTTEN MASTERPIECES!! SIT is my favorite Maiden album overall, and the absence of such songs like the title track, Heaven Can Wait, and Deja Vu is simply unexcusable.
SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON(1988)
TRACKS: Can I Play With Madness, The Evil That Men Do, and The Clairvoyant
COMMENTS: For the most part SSOASS has decent representation. CIPWM serves as another great commercial rocker in the vein of Wasted Years, and TETMD is sort of a fan favorite. But The Clairvoyant was a perfect choice! Best song on the album. Moonchild would've been nice, but no big deal.
NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING(1990)
TRACKS: Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter
COMMENTS: Three words- TERRIBLE SONG CHOICE. BYDTTS has to be one of the cheeziest songs Maiden has ever made. This was where the band started to wane in quality. Run Silent Run Deep and Tailgunner were still good though and could have been MUCH BETTER song picks.
FEAR OF THE DARK(1992)
TRACKS: Be Quick Or Be Dead (and a live version of Fear Of The Dark from Live At Donnington)
COMMENTS: The album's not much better than the last one, but BQOBD is actually a very good song, probably Maiden's most aggressive to date. I haven't heard the original version of FOTD, but the live version is well performed. Still, I would've liked to hear the original though. Right on. I probably would'nt have picked any others for this compilation.
THE X-FACTOR
TRACKS: Man On The Edge
COMMENTS: hmm... a good song for the Blaze Baily era, but not quite "Maiden". Still, I'm glad some part of Blaze's era was covered.
There is also a bonus Blaze track, Virus. Fairly bland for the first 3 minutes, and then turns into a decent rocker, but in the end, the boring portions dominate the song.
OVERALL: If you are new to Iron Maiden and you want an overview of their key songs, BUY THE DOUBLE-DISC SET, NOT THIS ONE. Otherwise, just buy the albums. Maiden fanatics who own all the albums have no need to buy this at all, unless you REALLY want the bonus track Virus, but believe me IT'S NOT WORTH IT. Still, this is the best Maiden compilation though, so if you must go with one, make it this one.

This must be the first Zappa Tribute of Meridian Arts Ensemble. I'm guessing from release date and I think it's most enjoyable one among all four Zappa Tributes. Start with "Big Swiftly" and has smooth transaction until "Dupree's Paradise". I love it.Meridian Arts Ensemble is brass Ensemble.every time listen to them I get picture of the battle that brass against strings like CD art of Grand Wazoo in my head.

Alice Cooper - 'Beast Of Alice Cooper' (WEA International).......2006-02-05
Isn't this like one of THE coolest CD covers you've ever seen? As I pen out this review of the 'Beast Of Alice Cooper', it's his 58th birthday, today and as everyone knows, he's still going stronger than ever before. Fourteen of Alice's early works here to thoroughly soak in and fully experience, like "Billion Dollar Babies", "Is It My Body", the president's theme "Elected", "Hello Hooray" (one of my personal favorite songs of all time), "Muscle Of Love" and "Department Of Youth". An absolute must-have. In fact, order it NOW!
Step into the street by sundown step into your last goodbye!.......2004-06-17
This is really a great compilation. All of this tracks are classics. My favourites include almost every single one.
But If I had to mention some I would say: Desperado,Billion Dollar Babies,I'm Eighteen,Muscle of Love,Department of Youth and Be My Lover.
NI!
Terrific gift.......2000-02-06
This is a terrific gift for a Non alice fan, someone you want to introduce to the coop. Its superior to the old greatest hits, altough the cover to that one was always worth the price of admission to me.
Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits Revisited!!!.......1999-09-25
If you already own Greatest Hits you don't need this. All it is is that album with a few from the excellent Welcome To My Nightmare. If however you don't own Greatest Hits you may want this one.

3.5 stars - Iron Maiden's best hits compilation to date.......2004-03-07
Best of the Beast (1996.) Iron Maiden's first hits compilation. THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE SINGLE-DISC VERSION ONLY.
Iron Maiden has been one of my favorite heavy metal bands for several years now. For nearly three decades now, the guys have been shelling out heavy metal masterpieces that more than stand the test of time. And at long last in 1996, the band finally released a hits compilation. How does the band's first hits compilation, Best of the Beast, measure up? Read on and find out.
PROS:
-If you're new to the band, this compilation will give you a pretty good introduction to them and their various stylings over the years.
-Most of the band's big hits up to the time are included in this set.
-In addition to the big hits, you get several lesser-known underrated masterpieces. Like any band, there is more to these guys than the big hits.
-The compilation contains a previously unreleased recording entitled Virus.
-The compilation covers some of the Blaze Bayley era.
CONS:
-Many hits were OMITTED from this so-called "best of." Where are Where Eagles Dare and Flight of Icarus?
-Although there are several underrated masterpieces here, there are many deserving ones that got left off - Moonchild and Run Silent Run Deep come to mind. Why'd we get a mediocre track from the No Prayer For The Dying album instead of one of these two masterpieces?
-The previously unreleased recording is NOTHING SPECIAL.
-The compilation is now out of print and difficult to find.
-The two-disc version of this compilation is WAY BETTER, and it's the version I recommend to those new to the band.
-No Di'Anno era songs!
OVERALL:
I've never been a big fan of hits compilation because they often fail to capture the true essence of the band they represent, and sadly, Iron Maiden has proven to be no exception with this compilation. However, it IS Maiden, so I can't give this package any less than three point five stars. If you're a casual fan and MUST buy a hits compilation instead of the albums, get the two-disc version of this one. You'll get two additional rare tracks and many more songs. This compilation and those that followed it are solid proof - Maiden isn't a "greatest hits" band.
