Product Description
Mother's Finest were a pop sextet lead by Glenn Murdock. They recorded a number of charting albums for Epic records in the late 70's. In 1981 they switched to Atlantic Records and recorded a hard rocking album, Iron Age, which hit # 168 in Billboard. It has been a cult favorite ever since and is making it's worldwide CD debut. Wounded Bird. 2003.

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

I have been listening to great scores for many years and this collection is truly inspirational in so far as the choice of different scores takes you on a journey of listening pleasure matched by only a few collections.The price is incredibly reasonable for hours of listening pleasure. Don't pass this one up

Finland has turned out a remarkable number of great composers in the past 100 years, and this collection is a terrific introduction to several of them. From Rautavaara's Concerto for Birds and Orchestra through Nordgren's glowing and homespun "Fiddler's Favorite Tune" to Sibelius's stormy "Storm" and Merikanto's lushly Romantic Lento, this CD enchants consistently. Nature is omnipresent in Finnish music, and that's about the only stereotype one can find here, although all of these composers were obviously well-schooled in the music that preceded them--one can catch a bit of Debussy here, a hint of the Russian romantics there. In any case, this is ravishing and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

Funk Rock or Hard Rock it is the Finest!.......2007-05-14

Mother's Finest is my favorite live band since I first saw them in '79. The live album was always my favorite. I recently got Iron Age on CD and became reaquainted with it. In a word WOW! This band can move from Rock, to Funk Rock to Hard Rock without blinking. You gotta love almost every thing they do. I saw them do a lot of these tunes plus some from "Black Radio won't play this record" at a Harley event. It was a harder set than they normally do and it was perfect for the Biker crowd. These folks upstage every one they open for!

'Iron Age' = MASTERPIECE!.......2007-02-08

To the guy who is calling 'Iron Age' softer than toothpaste - what are you smokin'?! This album RAWKS like....... a mutha! In fact, IA is MOTHER'S FINEST masterpiece and has stood the test of time extremely well. There has never been a better blend of no frills hard rock, groove and funk EVER - electrifying opener 'Movin' On' just absolutely grabs you by the throat and never lets go and the rest isn't far behind in terms of quality. The icing on the cake, of course, are Joyce 'Baby Jean' Kennedy's sensational Tina Turner-on-steroids vocals - I get goosebumps just thinking about how this lady can belt it out and combine power and soul like very few others. Hubby Glenn Murdock ain't no sloutch either but Joyce wears the pants so to speak when it comes to the vox dept. in MF. Sadly the band sort of fizzled after this barnburner and the follow-up 'If Looks Could Kill' (NOT!) was utter cheese. However, they returned to form on 'Black Radio Won't Play This Record', another true gem that ranks only slighty below 'Iron Age.' Too bad America seems to have largely forgotten about this amazing band while Europe has embraced them ever since their legendary 'Rockpalast' gig in the late 70's. Either way, 'Iron Age' is absolutely essential for any fan of funked up 80's hard rock!

Anybody who thinks this is rock , must have rocks for brains . This is soft touch pop rock and not in rocks league, damn i have rockier toothpaste .

This is pure, old hard rock with a metallic touché. This female singer, Baby Jean Kennedy, shows it all.

THERE, I SAID IT! I'll even go as far as to say 'Iron Age' ranks right up there with AC/DC's 'Back in Black' and Guns & Roses' 'Appetite For Destruction' for being among the best hard rock music ever laid down in the '80s. So it's really a downright disgrace for this band to not have made it after dropping this inspired effort on their part. If there ever was a breakthrough album waiting to happen for a band that could've sorely used one at that point in time, IT WAS THIS ONE!!! I mean every track on 'Iron Age' had the potential to be a big hit for Mother's Finest, especially the first 5 on the album (which are INCREDIBLE to say the least). Besides, there was NO rock band on the face of the earth that had two vocalists as talented and soulful as Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy and Glenn Murdock, not by a longshot. They showed that one didn't necessarily have to rip their vocal chords to shreds in order to qualify as a rock singer-just possess a strong voice with sound technique and everything else will fall into place.

So what went wrong with Mother's Finest after this album was released over 20 years ago? Same reason as before it seems: record company just won't promote a predominantly African-American band playing straight-up hard rock no matter how talented they happen to be. It sounds pretty discriminatory, but I honestly can't see any other reason as viable as the one I've given here. Maybe if the band's A&R people weren't so busy trying to pass them off as just another run-of-the-mill R&B/funk/soul act, then history might've been a whole lot different concerning this sadly overlooked band that never was given a fair chance at having their moment of triumph on account of their SKIN COLOR.

Note: this is also why I no longer listen to the FM dial (save for a few public stations) or tune into MTV, VH-1, and especially BET for that matter. It's time for the madness to stop, the sooner the better.

Big improvement.......2002-08-31

This is a big improvement on the style that made Phoenix Rising such a stellar effort from this aussie unit. First of all the drums dont have that clicky drum trigger sound that was present in some parts on the last album inits place are thick and heavy rolling drums that make the blood boil. Second, the sound seems a little more cohesive and the thrashier parts definitely shine through in every song. Third, the dual vocal duties are grand as both KK Warslut and S Berserker possess thoroughly wretched rasps as well as some hefty growling that are put to good use on every track. All in all, if you loved the thrashier parts on the last album but were turned off by the drum sound and poor mix then this album will certainly change your mind. A monument in war metal for the new millenium.

Album Description

1989 saw the release of Gold For Iron, which was the most lavish pop album to date by Carlos Peron. The album is an acute display of his stylistic divergence and variety. The spectrum ranges from the legendary Motorman to more subtle pop songs (such as The Spanish Fly, enriched with spoken word samples by Salvador Dali), influences from the Far East (Matin Indien), straight and demanding dance tracks (such as Los Alamos sung by Anthony More) and the industrial finale that resembles a symphony, (consisting of The Sketch and The Thrash), Gold For Iron can hardly be surpassed in its vibrancy and wealth of ideas.

"The way I work is like a film director - first there's the vision of how a song is going to sound. Then the musicians that I surround myself with translate that idea perfectly into sound", observes Carlos Peron. Outsiders occasionally claim that Peron operates like a prison warden, perhaps one reason why his various projects seem so mature.

Carlos Peron was the founder of globally renowned cult act Yello, initiator of the world's first ever video clip, The Evening's Young from the group's second album Claro Que Si. Following the fifth Yello album You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess, which was released as the world's first ever Compact Disc in 1983, Carlos left the group to embark on an ambitious solo career. Many music critics agree that Yello lost their raw edge with the departure of Peron.

Throughout the 80s to the present, Carlos released several critically acclaimed solo records, scored countless films and television programs and has worked as a highly in-demand producer. In 2006, Carlos is scheduled to re-issue his entire back catalogue consisting of 27 albums, which will all be remastered, repackaged and complemented by rare bonus tracks on SPV's Synthetic Symphony label.
