I really loved this cd and I really loved Hadley's voice. I think he is the best opera tenpr out there today. I would suggest to any one that buys this cd that get ready for a musical masterpiece because this man is just that. Im a really big fan of broadway showtunes and really enjoyed listening to this man sing some very great songs.

Album Description
They joined the Alligator Records family with THAT'S RIGHT! in 2003. The CD received massive amounts of praise and received yet another Grammy© nomination. Now they're back with STANDING ROOM ONLY an utterly hip-shaking set of songs highlighting the vocal and instrumental power of the band.
Remaining together for so long is not simply a matter of survival, but rather a testament to Roomful of Blues' commitment to its originality and its ability to evolve. Over the years, Roomful's lineup has changed but the band has always been one of the tightest, most joyful blues ensembles in the world. Currently an eight-piece unit led by guitarist Chris Vachon, the band has never sounded fresher or stronger. With vocalist/harpist Mark DuFresne, bassist Brad Hallen, drummer Jason Corbiere, keyboardist (and newest member of the group) Travis Colby, baritone and tenor saxophonist Mark Earley along with long-time members tenor and alto saxophonist Rich Lataille (the longest-standing member of the group) and trumpeter Bob Enos, STANDING ROOM ONLY swings with ferocity and rocks with urgency and purpose. Moving effortlessly from eight originals to six carefully chosen covers, the expertly executed songs sizzle from start to finish.
STANDING ROOM ONLY is a knockout punch from a group of blues heavyweights, full of big band swing, razor-sharp blues and sweaty R&B workouts.

Hear them flaunt their renowned signature sound.......2006-04-02
Roomful of Blues
Standing Room Only
Alligator ALCD 4900
Roomful of Blues is a party band's party band. On their 14th release, the eight member group sounds like a 1940s big band. Since 1967, Roomful has combined swing, rock, blues, and R&B. Back then, the band was started by guitarist Duke Robillard and keyboardist Al Copley. Three years later, a horn section was added. In 1977, their debut album broke them out of New England and into national attention. Robillard left in 1980 and over the years, the band was been home to at least 44 members.
The current lineup includes a stomping three-piece horn section. They contribute significantly to the group's swaying sound on this follow-up to 2003's That's Right. Throughout 14 tracks, (eight original numbers and six obscure classics from the likes of Little Milton and Lowell Fulson), they flaunt their renowned signature sound. Singer/harpist Mark DuFresne sounds like a modern-day Frank Sinatra. Since joining the group in 2002, DuFresne has ignited a return to the band's roots. His classy vocals are a highlight on "The Love You Lost On The Way" and "Sufferin' With The Blues." The arrangement on the latter goes against the band's core fabric. This makes it an extremely difficult number to pull off. Much of the credit for making the song work must go to DuFresne's soft and precise voice.
The disc begins with boundless energy. "She Put A Spell On Me" allures with interest. Immediately, you want to hear more. "Boomerang" combines the sounds of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and the Downchild Blues Band. Here, Chris Vachon's hot rockin' guitar is set atop a non-stop rhythm that is punchy. On "Just Keep On Rockin'", the horn-laden band performs hopping sounds from an era gone by. "Straight Jaquette" is a slinky instrumental, like ones heard in old-fashioned vinyl record shops.
Their dancing music makes you feel great. A couple of songs, ("Boomerang" and "Just Keep On Rockin'") are worthy of Song Of The Year, and most should be played on radio. Roomful's exciting sound is a welcome alternate to guitar driven blues.

Not Jazz, But Not truely blues.......2006-01-22
I seen this band play, once they opened for a true Blues Legend Albert king.. I mean they were not bad, their musically talented, but at the end of the day, Can you truelly call them a blues band you'll recomend? not really. As Albert king well put it.. " Blues full or Room"...
Its hard to judge fairly when they opened for a master blues guitarist Albert King!......
in all, not bad, but a great blues band? eh!
A Room with a View.......2005-10-22
This incredible band, wrapping up decade 4, has its eyes on the past (big band swing bands of the 40's) with a view towards keeping the sound tight and rockin' for the modern age. New vocalist Mark Dufresne has a range that can bring chills or simply drive the band with power and a bluesy cool. Leader Chris Vachon is one of the best guitar players out there for feel and tone whether playing a slow blues groove or hitting it hard. I am always so pleased to see new work come from this incredible American institution. They swing, they jump, they jive, they are simply outstanding. Another live album featuring this current line-up would be great. The horn section led by 30+ year saxman Rich Lataille is as bright and sharp as ever. Bubba's horn work is outstanding! As a great band leader once said when asked which line-up was the best of all the ones he's had over the years, he replied, 'Why this one of course". Simply put, America's best jump blues band, period!!
Just keeps on rockin'.......2005-03-03
The first thing I noticed was that these guys are having fun on this record. The band is tight as a guitar string. The horns wail, the vocals are whiskey smooth, not a mis-step in the song selection. I saw Marcia Ball recently, and it was a PAR-TAY, so maybe it is "sumfin'in da watah down der", but this was as much fun as blues record gets. All songs are good, most are way above average. The novelty of "Flip Flop Jack" and whistling sing-song intro on "Nobody Knows" made it a blast to listen to listen right down to the last chord... With nods to 1940's jump-swing, 50's style steet corner crooning (Sufferin with the Blues), plus a modern production, made for a throughly solid listen. Next road trip or pary I throw, I'll know where to start, and just keep on rockin'.
Roomful Still Delivers the Goods.......2005-01-25
How many times have you been disappointed when a blues band shows up to a gig as a three piece when all of its discs feature horns and keyboards on nearly every track? Roomful of Blues fans never experience a let down since the band includes as members the two saxophones, trumpet, keyboards, guitar, bass, drums and harmonica heard on its discs. What you hear on disc is what you get live and, in this case, fans should be salivating in anticipation of the band's next appearance. Simply put, the band has rarely sounded better. Starting things off with the fast paced, horn laden "She Put A Spell On Me", the band works its way through 14 cuts that allow the band to flex its instrumental muscles in a variety of settings. "I Can't Stand You No More" has a slinky, guitar driven mambo groove that is unlike anything the band has recorded before. "Boomerang" is a rockin,' dance floor filling number for the rock and roll dancers while "Just Keep Rockin'" , "Jona Lee", "Flip Flap Jack" and "Up Jumped the Devil" will give the swing dancers a work out. While the band has proved over and over that it is the gold standard for upbeat numbers it makes a strong case here for its ability to play the kind of slow, emotional blues that are Bobby "Blue" Bland's stock in trade. On "Sufferin' With The Blues" lead vocalist Mark DuFresne conveys a deep, desperate pain that conjures up images of someone ending the night alone crying in bad scotch wondering if it is worth it to make it to tomorrow. The band's instrumental prowess is showcased on "Straight Jaquette" which features the dueling saxophones of Mark Earley and Rich Latille and allows trumpeter Bob Enos to take a couple of flights into the stratosphere. A pleasant curve ball is thrown into the mix on the easy loping groove of Nobody Knows which features guitarist Chris Vachon serving up croaking vocals reminiscent of Tom Waits. As with past discs, the band features covers by jump blues kings like Roy Brown but this time extends into soul blues penned by Little Milton and Lowell Fulson and a number of self-penned tunes (Vachon logs in with four while Latille, Earley, DuFresne and keyboard ace Travis Colby contribute one each) that fit seamlessly with those of the masters that they have covered. After more than three decades in the business, Roomful of Blues continues to deliver the goods both live and on disc.

Standing in Good Graces.......2007-03-23
After listening to this CD several times I still find it very exhilerating to hear Martha Davis sing live. The pluses on this disc are that the biggest hits are here (except for Total Control) and that they sound great. The minuses are that there are only 10 songs and The Motels new material is nowhere to be seen. I was at this live performance when it was recorded and the songs that are missing are some of the bands' best and most moving to date.
Im very glad I got this and of course all fans should make the purchase. because there's good stuff here! So on a two tiered scale, it gets 4 stars for what it is and 3 stars because of what it might have been.

Album Description
This 13-track live release shows why Tesla were considered one of the best live hard rock acts to emerge during the 80's hair metal era. Nothing but the classics are included here including the expected riff rockers ("Cumin' Atcha Live," "Heaven's Trail"), melodic rockers ("Gettin' Better," "Little Suzi"), and soft rockers ("Signs," "Love Song"). Tesla is certainly back in business, and Standing Room Only is all the proof you'll need.
Customer Reviews:
Rock N Roll anyone?.......2006-02-19
I'm a little biased when it comes to Tesla because their first release was very important to a 13 year old kid growing up in Michigan. There wasn't a lot of music being played at my house, but as I grew into adolesence I started listening to my clock radio before submitting to the land of dreams. Top ten at ten became one of the favorite parts of my day and "Stairway to Heaven" and Van Halen's "Black and Blue" became my favorite songs. What an exciting time.
Thus, for Christmas that year I asked for some Led Zeppelin and Van Halen. Christmas morning came and went in a blur as usual, I got my Led Zeppelin (II to be exact), didn't get any Van Halen, but did get a strange looking cassette called "Mechanical Renaissance". Wow! That cassette turned my world around, never heard music played that way. From that moment on I was hooked and am happy to say that twenty two years later I'm still hooked, just don't have the mullett anymore.
With that said, this is a great release, from a great band. Tesla has never really pulled any punches, they are straight ahead Rock N Roll the way Rock N Roll is meant to be played; from the heart. I've seen them a couple of times live now and they have never disappointed and this is a good representation of how they sound in person. Jeff Keith gives me shivers at time, great voice. Frankie Hannon is a great guitar player (rumor has it he named his son after Alex Lifeson of Rush and he's married to Dickey Betts' daughter, talk about cool!) and it's good to hear him playing again with his old running mate, Tommy Skeoch.
The band is definitely a sum of it's parts, just a great mixture. For those of you who've grown up as I on this band, check out this cd. It will give some added flavor to some great songs, and for those of who are niave to this great band, do yourself a favor and check them out. You won't be disappointed, a lot different then some of the fluff and fodder from the same generation. Rock N Roll anyone?

After Listening to the CD I just want to encourage Paul and the Christanaires to continue to lift up the name Jesus in song. And please hold on to that old time traditional gospel style. People don't seem to understand that it's this style along with for Real Holy Ghost filled folks like our mothers and grandmothers is what's going to draw our young people to the Lord. This modern contemperary gospel is just what it is without the con. it's simply "TEMPERARY". Be blessed my brothers. Elder Michael Alston

Too Slick.......2001-08-14
With all due respect, anyone rating this album 5 stars desperately needs to head down to Baton Rouge to see the real Larry Garner (NOT the slicked-up, over-produced version you hear on this CD). Larry at his best is real, genuine, and down-to-earth. This album screwed Larry's style up and set him on the wrong track. Try Double Dues or You Need to Live A Little for a better taste.
blues for the 40 somethings.......2001-01-16
Larry Garner is skilled at writing and performing blues for the 40 somethings. He was first appreciated in Europe before beginning to develop a following in the United States. a Native of Louisiana, his music reflects both his roots and his age. Influences of elder statesmen of the blues and rock can be heard in Garner's music. His song writing definitely reflects the experience and humor which one develops at a certain point of life.
Driving woman describes a long term relationship in which the woman wants to get things done and the man wants to sit in his easy chair and enjoy the benefits of the purchase of his DSS dish. "Do Your Personal Thing" is a pleasant little song with a reggae beat and an upbeat message , which will remind some of another 40 something performer Keb' Mo. "The Strangers Blues tells the story of a stranger who sat down beside him in a bar and told of some of the pain she had gone through in her life. "Keep the Money" tells of the difficulty of getting a friend to pay back what he owes. All are songs with themes which we can recognize. all are done with skillful electric guitar work and good blues vocals.
This cd will be appreciated by those who like Keb Mo and Guy Davis, but are looking for a more hard driving electric blues beat.
Larry Garner Continues to Please.......2000-06-10
Larry Garner is one of the blues' great unknown treasures. His songs and vocals are witty, intelligent and sophisticated. He has a great sense of humor and always features a dynamite band to back up his searing guitar. Critics and fans alike love his top-shelf material. "A Driving Woman" jumpstarts the CD with Garner's hot electric guitar at the fore. He's got a high-maintenance woman driving him crazy. "Do Your Personal Thing" is a typical song, bopping along and spiced with Garner's personal observations on daily life. The Angels of Background Vocals add a great touch.
"The Strangers Blues" is a thoughtful piece about reminiscing, with Garner's warm vocals and touching lyrics blending well. "Don't Start Crying" is a slow blues tune illustrating the artist's versatility. His sense of humor shines through on "Keep the Money" and "PMS," the latter song offering a tongue-in-cheek condolence to his baby when she gets those "once a month blues."
"Out in the Country" and "I'll Run Cross You" are two more fine originals, both examples of Garner's strong writing. Standing Room Only rocks along with a top -notch band to keep things smoking, and "Last Encore" ends things on a high note with an energetic farewell.
All that said, this review could be condensed to three words: Buy this CD! It is another masterfully crafted collection of sophisticated modern blues songs.

Excellent music.......2004-02-08
I, too, bought all of the Highwaymen albums in the 1960's, and I still have them but othing to play them on! My only complaint is that they did not re-release the other albums on CD as they did their first two. I especially enjoyed the songs that they played in French and Spanish.
Highwaymen CD's.......2004-01-21
I have purchased the three CD's of this group that are available and loved them all. I'm hoping for further issues. In a Johann Helton web page that I accessed there is a suggestion that they are doing a Irish issue. I am waiting and hoping to obtain this if and when it is released.
Debut / follow-up albums still delightful after forty years.......2003-04-08
I think I wore the grooves out in the vinyl playing these records over and over again in the 60s. Certainly I dulled several needles. I know-- those technological details date me-- but this music has definitely stood the test of time. The harmonies are lovely, the songs compelling, and the overall feeling when you listen to the music just lovely.
The Highwaymen were a phenomenon particular to their time, yet timeless and eternal.
This CD even has the original album covers and liner notes. A must-have for any folk music fan!
The two albums from the heyday of the Highwaymen.......2003-04-01
The Highwaymen (Dave Fisher, Steve Butts, Bob Burnett, and Chan Daniels) were a quartet of Wesleyan University undergraduates who were able to translate their rousing style into a brief period of commercial success. This CD reissues together the group's first two albums. Their 1961 self-titled debut album sold people on the basis of classic singalongs such as "Big Rock Candy Mountain," but also showcased their quieter side in ballads such as "Au Claire de la Lune" and "Cindy Oh Cindy." The quintessential Highwayman song would be "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" which ended up being their most popular hit.
The group's second album, "Standing Room Only!" was released in 1962 and had a couple of hits with "The Gypsy Rover" and "Cotton Fields," a forgotten song written by the legendary Leadbelly that was supposed to be the B-side of a single. Add to those memorable songs some more great tracks, including "Black Eyed Susie" and "Pollerita," and you can see why the Highwaymen were a defining group in the folk scene of the early Sixties.
The Highwaymen sang traditional songs and ballads with a spirited harmony, and their reduced place in the history of the revival of American folk music is due simply to their preference to entertain audiences rather than engage in consciousness-raising. Consequently, they fall into the Kingston Trio, New Christie Minstrels, et al. category of folksingers as opposed to the politically oriented singers such Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Phil Ochs. However, once you get passed the idea that you were more likely to see the Highwaymen on "The Ed Sullivan Show" than at a civil rights protest meeting, you can enjoy their work.
Note: The group was originally named the Clansmen, because they sang a lot of Scottish and Irish songs on campus. After they were introduced to the meaning of the term outside of the northeastern part of the United States they changed their name to the Highwaymen, after the Alfred Noyes poem (which was set to music by Loreena McKennitt not too long ago).
This CD is a favorite.......2000-10-09
In the early 1960's, the first album I bought of the Highwaymen was "Standing Room Only." I bought it to learn "Gypsy Rover" and "Cotton Fields" on the guitar, but I quickly learned most of the others. Since I do not have the language prowess of these five gentlemen (I read that at least some were modern language majors), I never mastered "Nostalgias Tucmans" or "Pollerita", but I enjoyed listening to them just the same. Soon, I bought "The Highwaymen" primarily for "Michael", but quickly learned all of the others, includign the French and Spanish songs. I enjoyed this group's variety of instrumentation, the vocal harmony and the multitude of parts. Even though I enjoyed the stories they told in their English language folk songs, I also liked listening to the French and Spanish songs although I did not understand them. Over the years, both the albums and the record player went by the boards.
I was thrilled when this CD came out recently. The quality of reproduction was excellent. It was like having the original two albums. My wife for the first time told me that she missed the music of this group -- we've been married 32 years and I never knew that she was a fan of theirs. I also showed the Spanish songs to a friend from Central America. He told me that "Carni Vallito" is from Bolivia and was sung as well as he's ever heard it. "Nostalgias Tucmans" is from Mexico, and is normally done somewhat faster than in this arrangement. "Pollerita" is from either Venezuela or Peru.
The only thing missing is more music from this group! They recorded several other albums in the 1960's. I sincerely hope that they continue to re-release these albums two at a time as they have done this one, and as the Kingston Trio continue to do.

Album Description
"I first met Eliot Grasso in Achill Island, Co. Mayo in the west of Ireland in August 1999 at the island's annual summer school, Scoil Acla. After hearing him play the pipes for just a short while I was immediately aware that I was in the presence of a master musician, despite the fact that he was still in his mid-teens. Although he had only been playing the pipes for a few years at that stage, his technique and tone had developed to astonishing levels of excellence and richness and his repertoire was seemingly endless. This, combined with his intuitive sense of melodic and technical variation, makes him one of the most creative and dynamic musicians in the contemporary world of Irish traditional music."
"One of the most striking facets of Eliot's music is that he displays an intimate knowledge and understanding of every tune he plays. Careful examination of his playing reveals an emphasis on melodic fluidity which he largely achieves by viewing tunes as harmonic structures. This, in turn, enables him to develop original and attractive melodic variations which are among the most distinctive hallmarks of his piping. Another prodigious aspect of his playing is that he has succeeded in taking tunes not normally associated with the pipes and making them accessible to pipers in a manner which both compliments the pieces themselves and the idiosyncrasies of the instrument. He revels in playing tunes in keys such as G and D minor and A major, keys where many pipers fear to tread, despite the fact that many nineteenth-century chanters were designed to facilitate playing in these keys. To his great credit, Eliot has spent many hours absorbing the finer points of the music of a! range! ! of virtuoso performers, both pipers and non-pipers, and this experience in itself has given his music a very solid and authentic basis. His appreciation and performance of the standard piping repertoire leaves nothing to be desired and, furthermore, he has composed many fine tunes himself which show great understanding of both the pipes and traditional music itself."
Customer Reviews:
An exceptional debut from a talented piper.......2005-04-14
As a newcomer to the world of Irish music, I must say that this CD alone has single-handedly made me a fan of the pipes for life. Whether in my car on the way to work or in the CD player around the house, the lively jigs and reels are a compliment to every activity as played deftly by this young virtuoso. Eliot's sound is vibrant and captivating, demonstrating time and again his intense personal relationship and hours of dedication to the study of Irish music. I recommend this album to all who appreciate fine music, Irish traditional fans and future enthusiasts alike.

A collection of rare Mandrell album cuts on CD.......2003-11-13
This is a great collection to have if you're a Barbara Mandrell fan. It is the only place you can find six of the tracks on CD - those tracks being "Love The Second Time Around", "How Long Does It Take", "The Beginning of the End", "Mental Revenge", "This Is Not Another Cheatin' Song", and "Bedroom Reunion".
It also contains some of the lesser-know Mandrell singles and album cuts from her years with MCA Records. Songs like "Love Is Thin Ice", "Till You're Gone", "Crossword Puzzle" and "Operator, Long Distance Please" aren't the usual track listing for the recent compilations that have been issued lately.
