In a bordering-on-brilliant idea, the overseers of The Spawn soundtrack proposed an idea to a host of bands that went something like this: "you metal kids go play nice with the electronic geeks and maybe you'll make beautiful music together." Well, guess what? It happened. From the sexy, screamy sounds of the opening cut "Can't You Trip Like I Do" (courtesy of Filter and The Crystal Method) to the funkified "One Man Army" (Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello mixing it up with The Prodigy), the disc is as hot as the Spawn's home and twice as heavy as the monster himself. If you like the CD, rent the video; the soundtrack is front and center in the film, kind of like MTV with a plot. --Denise Sheppard

3 out of 5 stars a fusion of synth and metal.......2007-06-12

This is a good soundtrack. "Trip like I Do" was the main reason I got it. I found out I got a lot more too. Marilyn Manson with Sneaker Pimps, Orbital and Kirk Hammet, Butthole Surfers and Moby, Metallica and DJ Spooky. All these tracks are good. It starts to wind down and lose steam with the last couple of tracks but this is a good investment. If you enjoy the musical fusion of different styles than check this out, also check out the Judgement Night soundtrack

2 out of 5 stars Great idea...so so execution.......2007-04-15

I don't get all the rave reviews here. I've owned this CD since it came out in 1997 and its been probably more than 5 years since I had a desire to listen to it. Now listening to it trying to figure out what I want to put on my I-pod and I really can't find anything other than the 1st 2 tracks, which are great. The Filter/Crystal Method track is a classic. But beyond that I just find the songs somewhere between mildly interesting and boring. I am a fan of many of the rock & electronic artists here, but this experiment just didn't pan out in my opinion. It's been 10 years and I haven't seen any other collections like this so I must not be in the minority. Nice try, but there is not much more here beyond the concept.

5 out of 5 stars A great album, a massive soundtrack.......2006-07-11

I was a big fan of Spawn before I got to be a big fan of music. When I found the soundtrack in a garage sale, I jumped on it and had listen it almost a thousand times!! ...When I realized I had a special one: instead of "For whom the bells tolls" of Metalica on track 6, I have "This is not a dream" from Apollo 440 and Morphine, and I must admit it's my personal favorite track on the album!! I'm glad I didn't bought the American version.

5 out of 5 stars The Lost Art of Great Soundtracks!! .......2006-03-29

Spawn is by far, along with the original Batman starring Michael Keaton, the best comic book remake movie ever. Sadly underplayed, especially to the recent flood of sub-par remakes. Well, not only was the magic and mayhem captured forever on film, the soundtrack played a huge roll in the movie as well, thus making it a vital part of the movie that sadly, now, has seemed to become a forgotten craft: That is of course, the lost art of producing a Great movie soundtrack. Showcasing some of the best and most cutting edge artists of that era, which may have not been very long ago, but nevertheless was a significant time. A time of change within the rock community. A precursor to what would be the short life of Nu-Metal and the rebirth of straight up Rock and Roll, which seemed to split fans right down the middle, and all different ways at that. A cool time and a cool change that was long overdue in the music world. although this is one soundtrack that is definitely dated, it is still a much appreciated and a more often than not listened to addition to my collection. Anyone who loves the movie needs this soundtrack, not to mention anyone who just loves music of the heavier sort, this is an awesome soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Classic fusion of genra's.......2006-03-03

This soundtrack knows what it needs to be and works really hard at succeeding...and for the most part it really does. From the explosive first track, Filter and Crystal Method set the bar very high, and for the most part the following tracks, while never fulling living up to "Trip like I Do" still fit the mold and deserve to be listed on the same track listing. "Long Hard Road out of Hell" is a great song, dispite the controversy of Sneaker Pimps regreting having to woek with Manson, they still delivered a brilliant song, and the second best on the album. "Satan" by Orbital and Kirk Hammet as well as "Tiny Rubberband" by the Butthole Surfers and Moby really stand out as quality tracks. The redone "FOr Whom the Bell Tolls" is appropriate subject matter, but all in all I was not overly impressed with the track. "Torn Apart" is brilliant (gotta love Stabbing Westward) and Prodigy's "One man Army" is freaking killer. Closing track by Soul Coughing & Roni Size is decent but I would have closed with Slayer's "No remorse" instead. Here is my HUGE complaint...KoRn's "Kick the P.A." is one of the dumbest songs ever, and with the talent that KoRn has shown they possess this was a waste of a track...They could have done SOOOOOO much better. Incubus and Silverchair are fine and Henry Rollins shows he still has it (never lost it)...so all in all Spawn delivers...they just should have cut KoRn before the CD was released!

This was a pretty good album, better than most of their recent stuff, and you have to love the cover art. Brutal isn't it?

4 out of 5 stars Great Death Metal From the Genre's Master..........2006-11-09

Although Cannibal Corpse will never make an album greater than "The Bleeding," the best death metal album ever made, "The Wretched Spawn" is a strong contender for second-best, rivaling "Bloodthirst," "Kill," and "Butchered at Birth" for the silver medal. "The Wretched Spawn" was, without question, a strong return to form following the disappointing "Gore Obsessed." Without question must-own death metal; buy it now (and their entire back catalog) if you don't already own it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the first albums that turned me on to Cannibal Corpse.......2006-10-04

Ways to describe a typical Cannibal Corpse album: graphic artwork by artist Vincent Locke, song titles and lyrics that paint horrific images, and bludgeoning technical riffs and tempo changes. This album is no exception. One of the first albums that got me listening to the band even after reading Dino Cazares (ex-Fear Factory guitarist, Corpse fan) praising this album. The dvd is a nice added bonus as some bonus dvd's that come with cd's are usually disappointing. You get footage from the making of the album, plus interviews with the band on the recording process, the studio they were working at, and the gear they use. The album was a little hard to find with the explicit cover due to a version with a censored album cover also being released so that it could be made available at stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. So if The Wretched Spawn is something you're looking for, be sure you know which version you want.

2 out of 5 stars the lamest corpse album I've heard........2006-08-04

Man, I was really put to sleep by this. I like Cannibal Corpse, but I don't think these guys even tried this time.

CD: two good songs-the black sabbathesque "Festering in the crypt" and the sorta brutal "Nothing Left to mutilate". I thought that "Rotted Body Landslide" was one of their coolest titles yet, but the song sucked, unfortunately.

DVD: these guys sure don't seem brutal. The Corpsegrinder is funny because he is like a TV Wrestler standing around saying ignorant crap. Alex Webster's interview is funny because you can detect the exact moment when he realizes what a douchebag he has made of himself by comparing the band's controversy to Elvis' "Swinging of his hips" cuz' his voice starts to crack and shack. I loved everything Jack Owen had to say. He's just sitting around half drunk laughing at himself and the band. I like watching 'O Brien perform the guitar lick to "Frantic Disembowelment".

Cover Art: pretty cool. the most offensive since "Tomb of the Mutilated", Although it is a ripoff of the "crucified woman" from the movie "Cannibal Holocaust" (Go check THAT image out, fool!!)

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, but I enjoy music.........2006-03-28

Anyone can mimic these pathetic "riffs" and drumbeats..It's utter nonsense: every song sounds exactly the same. Seriously I wouldn't be surprised if the military used this album for torture methods. The whole "o we're so bad ass because we sing about death and gore" is almost as horribly funny as the singer's so called "vocals". Bottom Line: listen to metal..not this trash.

4 out of 5 stars Cabinet.......2007-01-21

I had heard alot of really great things about this cd, and it is pretty insane. "Swarm Of The Formless" is probably one of my favorite death metal songs. The drummer is clearly the focal point of this group, and does an amazing job at coming up with interesting parts to complement the time changes and different riffs. The main problem with this CD is that I can't sit through the whole thing. A lot of the songs start to blur together, with only a few songs having memorable parts. However, the style of the band is quirky and interesting enough to make this much more palatable than it would be for most other bands. Highly recommended for fans of tech-death.

5 out of 5 stars technical death with spice!.......2007-01-15

you really won't find too many albums with this level of musicianship or
hooks.just chocked full of brutality and weighty numbers that make you listen over and over just to capture all of the nuances. brilliant! i just wish amazon had their newest "Noctambulant".

5 out of 5 stars Technical Fury.......2006-03-29

(**Updated 11/19/06**)
Wow. Just wow. I have really been into this album for the past few months. Spawn of Possession is a band like no other. With the infusion of catchy technical riffs and solos in their brutal death metal music, there's no reason why not to check out this band. This album and their latest, "Noctambulant" (which isn't available on amazon.com), are amazing works of art. Buy this now. If you love death metal, no matter what form it is, you need this. No doubt one of the greatest Unique Leader records releases, along with Gorgasm's "Masticate To Dominate", Pillory's "No Lifeguard at the Gene Pool" and Decrepit Birth's "...And Time Begins".

5 out of 5 stars Hits the spot.......2005-09-25

That is, if you have a late night craving for some ultra technical/uber brutal death metal that sounds like the unholy child of Suffocation and Gorguts. And all this from a group of Swedes?! I thought they were only concerned with making melodic death metal and black metal...haha...proved me wrong. What a satisfyingly tasty death metal cd.Mmmmm.

5 out of 5 stars A technical Monster!!!!.......2005-03-03

Amazing! That's not good enough. Phenominal!!! Nope, words can't discribe this. I could listen to this album all day and it never get old. I'm not disappointed for a second. The band unleash themselves with a new track 'Swarm of the formless'. This track shows that they hold on to their own style and still manage to develop themselves. The riffs are busy as ever yet good to follow. All instruments fall into place and you can hear the musicians again have grown in their musical skills. The whole idea of the band was to create brutal and sick music that went beyond all that had been done before in death metal history! A must have!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music, Terrible Production.......2007-07-04

This is the most overlooked album in the Suffocation catalog, and it is sadly out of press. Is it because of the musical performance in here? No, they did an excellent job at that. The reason why "Breeding The Spawn" is such an overlooked record is because of a terrible producing job done. Sub-par production isn't always a bad thing as long as it fits in with the music, but when it comes to Suffocation, and thinking this album came out after "Effigy of the Forgotten", it's just sad that this CD had to have such lame production. Thanks to that, the guitar tone is thin, the bass is barely audible, Frank Mullen's vocals sound like he has a sore throat, and the CD sounds like it was recorded in a garage.

There are golden elements in this album. Excellent riffage in songs like "Beginning of Sorrow" and the title track, the bass solo in "Epitaph of the Credulous", and excellent drumming make this another CD worth listening despite the terrible production.

Overall, this is a good CD. It's solid, well-played death metal. However, if you're new to the band, check out "Effigy of the Forgotten" first, and save this for later.

5 out of 5 stars Suffocation strikes back with another great album!!.......2006-07-25

Despite the bad production, this album still kicks alot of a-s-s. The highlite of "Breeding the Spawn" is that the bass is more audible than in other Suffocation albums, and audible bass is good; this is kinda like "Hell Awaits" by Slayer, the production lags, but in turn, it delivers a cooler sound to the vibe.

While "Effigy of the Forgotten" was a pure speed fest, this album has some slow, sludgy riffs in songs like "Epitaph of the Credulous;" but don't worry, there's still plenty of speed and sweet guitar solos, low-pitched growls, and machine gun-drumming.

Every song kicks, but my favorites are "Breeding the Spawn," "Epitaph of the Credulous," "Prelude to Repulsion," and "Ornaments of Decrepancy."

This album is pretty hard to find, but its worth finding. If you love death metal, and good music in general, this is for you.

If your favorite bands are Kittie, Slipknot, Mudvayne, and the Deftones, steer clear of this as you'd soil your adult diapers from the first ten seconds of listening.

2 out of 5 stars Suffocations worst - Pick up Effigy of the Forgotten or Pierced From Within.......2006-02-10

Within 5 seconds of listening to this disc you can hear how poorly produced it is. It actually sounds like you are listening to a warped cassette tape !! After Effigy of the Forgotten, you have to wonder what they were thinking when this was released. Was it because of pressure from the record company that caused them to release this album with such a poor sound? The bass-heavy, in your face brutality of Effigy of the Forgotten is gone. Instead we are left yearning for so much more while trying to make out low, thin guitars and the barely audible drums. I have tried to listen to this for years and I just cant find anything good.

The first song and the title track are good songs, but beyond that the rest of the album is weak. The beginning of the last song, Ignorant Deprivation, just sounds so damn cheezy because of the horrid guitar sound. Maybe if they re-recorded these songs (like they did with Breeding the Spawn on Pierced From Within) you would be able to hear what they are supposed to sound like.

I do not recommend picking this album up. I see that other people love this album, but it is clearly Suffocation's worst.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2005-12-13

This is the only suffocation album you need!! This is the best of the bunch and I reccomend it to anyone who likes any kind of metal. Fans that don't like death Metal should listen anyway, and even more so if you are a drummer or fan of drums. I consider Mike to be one of the best in the death genere, so take a good listen to what he is doing. YOu will be amazed.

3 out of 5 stars Suffocation's Best.......2005-09-17

I must say that this is the only Suffocation album that I can listen to in its entirety without taking a break. I found Effigy and Pierced to be very boring and annoying. But this is a good listen despite the so called poor production, I think it helped bring out their true sound. If you are thinking of buying a Suffocation CD then get this, but if you want excellent death metal then then look no further than VADER - The Ultimate Incantation, and MALEVOLENT CREATION - Retribution, 2 excellent albums every death metal fan should own.

After I discovered 1995's Skarmageddon, lost it,rebought it,I was slobbering in anticipation with my newfound ability to buy any ska I wanted without running my poor little 1993 Nissan Sentra into the ground, driving all around the midwest.(Yup,I stopped being chicken of buying online)
After you pop this cd in you will be filled with a resounding, "Oh this is just okay" feeling that you get when you buy a full album of somebody you only like two songs of,like,say..The Exceptions. A few standouts that have that magical weirdness I crave in ska, like "The Irish Singer of Albee Square" come to mind, but overall this is a letdown. Skip right from Skarmageddon one and buy number Three, which is totally, magically awesome.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great CD!!!!!!.......1999-07-19

The Skarmageddon series is a great series to listen to if you are into underground ska, and if you are intrested into hearing the up and comming ska bands.

I got this completely by chance. I didn't even buy it. The album was bought for me by my gran who doesn't exactly share my taste in music because she thought I'd like the cover and she thought I was into robots (I'm 20 so I'm kind of over that stuff). They are really cool, I made all my friends listen to them. Their music is unique and whats more you can actually call them indie. I think the internet would've really been good for these guys pity, maybe the'll read their reviews and revive the band. Take a chance its only 1 cent attach it to another order, you won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Crucial UNKNOWN recordings for only...1 cent !?! .......2006-02-16

Am listening instead to their self-titled debut right now and
decided to Google some reviews...see if anyone has heard of this OUTSTANDING (pre-jamband) BAND OF JAMMERS/MUSICIANS/SINGERS/ACTIVISTS. What a shock to find both of RRR's phenomenal albums on Amazon for only ONE CENT each! RRR was a joyful discovery of mine during the early 90s. RRR combines ROCK/RAP/ACTIVISM/GUITARTISTRY/CHOPS/POLYPHONIC MELODIES...not to mention topnotch songwriting. RRR can best be described as ahead of their time. In the early 90s, MTV had the charts ALL SEWN UP with their heavy rotation faves and were in the process of removing "music" from the equation (IE. MTV - M = EMPTY VISION!) with the advent of Liquid TV & Real World, etc. What RRR delivered in 1991 (and still sounds fresh in 2006!) was an uncompromising ethos that these were musicians making (...Oh my god!) MUSIC. No jazzers, proggers or classical musos these; RRR sought to make funky, guitar-laden, urban (dare I type it?) POP MUSIC! This at a time when Nirvana made pop "alternative" and the radio was dying a slow death by scrambling for new programming in light of cable TV, CDs, and the soon to arrive INTERNET. Rise Robots Rise elevated song-craft in the face of all this with GRACE, MUSICALITY, and downright GROOVINESS. It's all here: the catchy songs, the scorching guitar solos, the funky bass, the activist rap, the swanky horns, the (WHAT WAS THAT?) tasty deployment of samples, the danceable drums (drum machines?), the angelic but sexy inner-city sistahs making you hot with their 3-part harmony! Slap this FONKY disc on at your next house party and nod approvingly as the rumps start shakin'! Your friends into music will start asking: WHO IS THIS? Rise Robots Rise and Spawn are two albums by pop-music pioneers THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE BIG STARS. Who knows where these players are now? If you love real music performed by real musicians ripe with the talent and soul to move you as well as wake up your ears, ass and brain...GET BOTH OF THESE DISCS RIGHT NOW!
