Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Reissued 1984 album. Angry Anderson & Co.'s fourth studio LP, including the Australian hit single 'I Wish', finds the band moving in a more AOR style. However, the 10-featured tracks lack none of the bands customary bite and, on 'Saturday's Rage' in particular, they more than actually capture the cross between Hard Rock and Metal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Patriotic Music.......2007-02-21

Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.

4 out of 5 stars A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30

If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

5 out of 5 stars Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

5 out of 5 stars another great gerard schwarz cornet album.......2006-02-02

Once again I am amazed by a great Gerrard Schwarz album. I own all of his albums and bought this one right away. I think he is quite possibly the most musical trumpet/cornet player ever to play alongside Maurice Andre. This album is great, and there are many more albums featuring these great players that should be re-released, such as "Festival of Trumpets" with the new york trumpet ensemble. Nontheless this album is a must pickup for any music enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Normal Repertoire....but EXCELLENT!.......2005-09-27

I didn't know what to make of this CD before I bought it, and still haven't totally figured it out as I was listening to it, but I did find it very enjoyable. "Turn Of The Century Cornet Favorites", as this CD is titled, seems to be a misnomer...I didn't recognize one selection among the 19 tracks contained, but that may be the greatest appeal of this CD for any cornet player, brass player, or aficionado desiring some relatively unknown, but well-played, music from a bygone era. As I was listening to the CD, images of the turn-of-the century came to mind. I imagined sitting near a gazebo, while a community band and soloist performed on a summer's eve, or perhaps at a pavilion at the World's Fair. Having played french horn and other brass instruments in my youth, I was familiar with the names of Clarke and Arban (who wrote a celebrated Cornet Method still used today in many colleges and conservatories), and some of their better known compositions. But I have to admit, this materials was all new to me. For anyone wanting to supplement their brass CD collection with recordings not found anywhere else, this CD will do very nicely indeed. The playing by cornet player Gerard Schwarz in amazing, with technique to burn and a beautiful tone to match. Kudos also goes to the outstanding accompaniment he receives from the Columbia Chamber Ensemble. Also, please see my review of "Footlifters" (another winner), part of the Brass Masterworks series on Sony. Keep them coming.

5 out of 5 stars This is Music.......2005-09-20

You would be hard pressed to find any recording that exhibits greater qualities of lightness, motion, and beautiful phrasing than this one. Add to that Schwartz's beautiful tone and flawless technique, and you have the perfect model of how these cornet solos should sound. I write as a trumpet player who has played quite a bit in this style.

These 26 selections, recorded from 1904 to 1922, document the work of an important American player and band composer. Despite the trivial nature of most of the music, one can't help listening to Herbert Clarke's playing with respect and growing affection. He was a most elegant player, with a beautiful tone that comes across even in the earliest of these recordings. The showiest pieces, which can be quite dazzling, are still performed with taste and musicianship. This disc is an important sound document, and the transfers from even the earliest of the recordings are surprisingly listenable. Highly recommended to all brass and nostalgia lovers. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant playing transcending primitive recording technique.......2001-01-11

Hearing this CD -- despite the distracting surface noise from the primative acoustic recordings from which this CD was remastered -- I appreciate for the first time the greatness of Clarke as a cornet soloist. If he is not the greatest to date, he is surely one of the giants upon whose shoulders modern virtuosi of the trumpet (which has pretty much replaced the cornet) stand.

Clarke's sheer artistry in both composition and performance still dazzle and his interpretive ability brings to life some of the 'tear jerkers' of the golden age of popular brass music in a way no modern performance comes close to.

Although on first hearing one could be very much distracted by the primitive recordings, the brass player soon focuses on Clarke's playing so completely that the the surface noise disappears.

Every trumpet player and cornetist, more, every brass player and lover of band music, should own a copy.

5 out of 5 stars The Master of the Cornet.......2001-01-04

God bless Crystal Records for taking the time to re-issue these extremely rare and valuable recordings from an unfortunately neglected giant in American musical history. Most people today don't realise how famous and influential Mr. Clarke and his peers (Sousa, Pryor et. al.)were on the American musical scene at the beginning of the Twentieth century. It is very important that these recordings (and others from this period, the birth of sound recording) be preserved for future generations.

As for those who could not stand the "hiss" on these recordings, how spoiled can you be? You simply miss the point of all this. We all know that these records were made during the infancy of the recording industry, and that they didn't have the technology we now have. I find it thrilling to listen to them just as they are. Recorded sound is the closest we have to time travel, and I find it fascinating to listen to these recordings as though I was there when they were first made. And most of all, through the marvel of recorded sound (Mr. Sousa notwithstanding) I can listen today to the greatest cornetist who ever lived, even though he passed away over 50 years ago.

Hopefully Crystal Records will someday put out an anthology of original Sousa and Pryor Band recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Clarke is the cornet master!.......2000-08-03

Herbert Clarke is the finest cornetist the planet has ever seen. The technical brilliance on Carnival is just breathtaking. The sound quality of the recording is little hinderance on the true genius behind this man's playing. Don't let the hiss bother you!!!

5 out of 5 stars heartbreaking music from a bygone era.......2000-03-22

These vintage recordings would have been otherwise lost to us--and a great loss at that. Clarke plays so beautifully, esp. those pieces that he wrote. It's notall oom-paa-paa, but music that is deeply affecting and stirring. This is the effect that Wynton Marsalis was going for in his "Carneval." While Marsalis's album is a wonderful tribute, this is the original. A must-have for any serious trumpet player.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful.......1999-09-14

Watch out if you want to buy this cd! It's a good cd with Herbert Clarke playing some of his own pieces the way they should be played...but the recording is TERRIBLE! Naturally, it's a 1904 recording! But the hiss for the first half of the cd is almost painful. It's NOT something you can just ignore, so don't be caught unawares.

I purchased this CD back in 1998 when it was first released, but someone at a party (probably some girl) stole it. I have actually been waiting to find it available somewhere, but most stores don't carry it anymore. Finally, I found it available at Amazon and bought it again. The CD is still hot. If you liked the 2nd installment of this series of releases, the 3rd one (THIS CD) is even better. At last, my trilogy is complete again.

Great African American gospel music has an indisputable power, rooted in the audible faith of its performers and the beauty of their voices. As the bass singer of the Fairfield Four, an a cappella group that started more than a half century ago, Isaac Freeman is one of the brightest jewels in this tradition's crown. But the 73-year-old shines even brighter on his solo debut, thanks to the support of the spare and supple Nashville blues outfit, the Bluebloods. Of course, it's the resonance and depth of Freeman's baritone, as well as his stately phrasing, that gives these 11 songs gravity. Freeman reaches back to his childhood for numbers like the title track and "Jesus Is on the Mainline," and backing vocalists Regina Brown and Ann McCrary preserve the songs' revival-tent origins as a two-woman choir. But it's the scent of the barroom that makes many of these arrangements vital. The bass and drums add often swinging propulsion to the music, lending a kind of Afro-Cuban shuffle to "You Must Come in at the Bottom," an anthem of sorts for Freeman written by the Prairie Home Companion's Garrison Keillor. Bluebloods leader Mike Henderson's slide guitar plays winning foil to Freeman throughout. On "Beautiful Stars" Henderson translates Freeman's melody to his instrument, soaking it in vintage amp vibrato that makes each note throb as it hangs in air. And his guitar is as unhurried as Freeman's big voice. Henderson slowly bends strings and snaps out notes as he swaps lines with John Jarvis's electric piano in "When We Bow in the Evening at the Altar." All of which gives this union of church and state-of-the-art blues a solid constitution. --Ted Drozdowski

Album Description

Traditional African American gospel performed by the renowned and profound bass vocalist of the Fairfield Four, Isaac "Dickie" Freeman, and backed by Nashville's prized Bluebloods with vocals by sisters Ann McCrary and Regina McCrary Brown. Freeman recalls the songs that were important to him over his illustrious 50+ years in the gospel business. Also included, "You Must Come In At the Bottom," written especially for him by Garrison Keillor. Back up vocalists, Ann and Regina, the daughters of legendary lead tenor and founding member of the Fairfield Four, Reverend Sam McCrary, come full circle, now working with the man they heard singing with their father at living room rehearsals all those years ago. Mike Henderson shines on slide guitar with the Bluebloods providing exceptional back-up. Production by noted Nashville singer/songwriter Kieran Kane in collaboration with writer/gospel historian Jerry Zolten.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gospel and Blues.......2004-09-09

This is a wonderful recording. The band are top-notch and play a very nice style of blues. The backup singers are fantastic and Isaac is a deep well of heartfelt, warm and expressive inspirational music. I'm sure not everbody would find this appealing but for those who love the rich soulfulness and joyous exuberance of genuine gospel music (not that counterfeit stuff called CCM) this is just pure gold. I give this 5 stars because in it's own unique way, it's as close to perfect as you can get.

Some other great recordings of fine gospel music are; "Spirit of the Century" by the Blind Boys of Alabama and "Father, Father" by Pops Staples.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Stars Isaac Freeman and the Bluebirds.......2003-03-13

Absolutely amazing! What a magnificant bass voice. I was truly engulfed by this CD and recommend it highly. If you like great gospel quartet music, this CD is a "must have".

5 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Bass.......2003-01-18

An awesome CD with great vocals and arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars Blues and gospel fabulous!!.......2002-06-19

The bass voice of Isaac Freeman, from Fairfield's Four is matched here with Mike Henderson and the Bluebloods, the most outstanding of gritty blues outfits today. This album is sheer revelation in its uncompromising attitude to creating gospel with more than a hint to country-blues and down home playing. This music would stand its ground both in church and in a playhouse and proves the deep gospel links in todays music. Mike and band provides fabulous backing with piano, stand-up bass and mostly slide guitar. The small choir provides a perfect response foil for Isaac's deep singing. All the backing musicians are totally in understanding with the gospel roots but add that extra bit of grit that makes this an outstanding performance. If this music does not want make you sing and dance, nothing will. This is perfect music to brighten up the day, even without the religous message, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this CD to anyone who likes true music by real musicians!!! In addition, you should check out Mike and the Bluebloods releases "Thicker than water" and "First blood" for the grittiest blues ever to come out of Nashville or any other place for that matter. To the Bluebloods I would just like to say: When is your next CD coming?

5 out of 5 stars Great Gospel.......2002-05-20

What a great surprise! Powerful voice, perfect, soulful background singers and an understated, yet powerful band. Song after song hits the groove. This almost sounds like a Ry Cooder album, complete with stinging slide guitar, but with better vocals. The Garrison Keillor song ("You Must Come In At The Bottom") is my least favorite, but even it is worth a smile. This record is tremendous!

With their third album, this blues-rock outfit from the Mississippi hills further transcends their mimicry of the Allman Brothers and home-turf heroes Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside, and Fred McDowell to forge a distinct sound. Sure, the guitars ring even more like the Allmans' with the addition of Burnside's son Duwayne, who harmonizes his six-string with Luther Dickinson's on plenty of tunes. But improved vocal performances and pop-savvy arrangements make numbers like "Eyes," "Kids These Daze," "One to Grow On," and the hip-hop-informed "Be So Glad" ready for rock radio. Happily, the foursome haven't sidestepped their deep blues roots. The late cane fife master Othar Turner appears on "Be So Glad," and they cover Kimbrough's "Meet Me in the City" with all of its original swing and swagger, plus the warm, joyful tone of Dickinson's expert slide playing. "The One Thing," with its roiling acoustic guitar intro and steel-guitar-style string-bending, unfurls like an epic. It evolves from country blues to country rock and then dives into a gently exploratory jazz-blues instrumental passage before returning to its flat-four beat. If this CD gets the attention its well-written songs and fine playing deserve, the Allstars' smart and solid fusion may well become the foundation for a new school of Southern rock. --Ted Drozdowski

1 out of 5 stars P.U........2007-06-10

I own four other N.M.A. compact discs and I really enjoy them. I'm not sure what happened here, but file this one under "painful listening".
Weak, trite lyrics and limited jams. I want to get rid of this CD, but I can't see giving to a real friend. Sorry guys...

1 out of 5 stars A waste of good money!.......2005-08-19

Well, one listen to this dirg and it's for sale!, what is this?, corporate rock?, did they owe an album and just dumped out what was in the can?, strings?????, where is the grit?, the power?, dumb songs!!!, please, give us some more power blues rock! Well, now if I had to judge, Reckless Kelly is the best band in the USA right now!

5 out of 5 stars criticism is biased.......2005-06-13

to say that this album isn't any good just because it is different from shake hands with shorty or 51 phantom is wrong. This is a great album with great songs and great production done by a great band.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction To The NMAS.......2004-11-23

Polaris is my first introduction to the North Mississippi Allstars. They remind me a lot of The Band. Their music has a nice country soulful feel to it. The opening track EYES is great. I can also recommend HARD TO PLEASE and the title track POLARIS. A talented and good band. I look forward to more from these guys.

4 out of 5 stars Many good individual tracks, lack of flow.......2004-08-19

First, I have to agree with many other reviewers that this band's main strength is their live performances. For your money, you won't see a better show. This CD highlights NMA's ability to cut across several genres. The southern blues rock is there and ever improving. Their writing steadily gets better. Several tracks also have a Brit pop flare featuring the vocalist from Oasis. This is definitely their most experimental album and gets better with each listen. However, vocalist changes and complete genre shifting from track to track lends no flow to the album. That said, one can expect this album to be their breakthrough to a broader audience.
