TOP NOTCH PERFORMANCE!.......2005-10-11
Man were always compared to the British Quicksilver messenger service ( a bit of an insult in my opinion after listening to 'happy trails' as good a reason to refrain from drugs as 'live dead' or 'bless its pointed head) whilst Man were proned to their indulgencies ('the storm' from the second album and always all the third album) most of the time their twenty minute jams kept things pretty tight and the soloing and groove were always spot on. This is a 4/5 recording from the Rainbow and what sets it above the other live album is an absolutely stunning 'love your life/spunk rock' twenty minutes of ferocious jamming with great guitar/organ interplay. It's nice to have a live document of Man with the keyboard work of Clive John (check out his solo album!)to the fore. There is a fine version of 'banana's' and 'c'mon' and the band were deffinately on form that night. I don't think Man get the credit they deserved (except in Germany where they were very popular)afterall they've been going since the sixties and still produce the goods live (ie'the official live bootleg' from 1994) and yet they're another of these bands with so called 'cult' status. Unfair! This is in my opinion there best live album. As for the Quicksilver links i saw them with John Cipollina guesting many moons ago and my lasting impression was of him doing a guitar pose and almost falling off the stage That's rock'n'roll for ya!
