Simply the Best.......2003-06-21
This is not only Janis Ian's best album, it is the best album I have ever listened to. I am not really a fan of all her other work but this album breaks the mould for her. The recording is first class. If you listen to this CD, make sure you turn the volume up. It does not really get loud but it begins to give the tracks a "being there" feel. The guitaring (ian's I believe), percussion are superb, Lyrics meaningful, sometimes melancholy, sometimes dark.
This is a classic!

I have been a fan of Janis Ian since the beginning. This album breaks new ground both for her and her genre. Every song is a gem, filled with beautiful, heart-rending poetry & wonderful sounds. It puts everything else she's done to shame. It is also perhaps the best sounding CD (prior to the advent of SACD) that I have ever heard! If you have even the slightest inkling that you might like it, BUY IT!

This is one of the best female songs made in the last 25 years , it is a real classic , all tracks are beautiful , AUDIOPHILES WILL APPRECIATED , others will compare it with TAPESTRY of CAROL KING OR TRACY CHAPMAN .If you like music BUY IT now.

I discovered the Mitchell & Ruff Duo through William Zinsser's book about them: "Mitchell & Ruff: An American Profile in Jazz" which was reprinted about the same time this CD was released in 2000. Both are excellent and highly recommended by this jazz fan.
Breaking the Silence with a Breath of Fresh Air.......2001-02-16
Breaking the Silence by the Mitchell Ruff Duo is a brilliant example of jazz artistry with a creative palette as wide as a grand piano, an historic sensibility as deep as the robust sounds of a string bass, and a fluidity of musical mastery as elegant and arresting as the warm tones of a french horn.
With all but two tracks recorded before a live audience, this CD offers a level of spontaneity and excitement which would be otherwise hard to find in a studio. The opening track, "Autumn Leaves" begins with the extraordinary musical sensitivity that Dwike and Willie are known for and builds to a climax that leaves you on the edge of your chair or standing in front of your stereo speakers in anticipation of the next track.
The CD progresses like a series of stories well-told by two good friends who compliment each other, laugh together, and share in the expression of memorable details. Such sensitive musical dialogue is rhythmically engaging, harmonically enriching, and melodically captivating.
The Jazz Standard "Laura" which lends itself to gorgeous virtuosic piano playing on the part of Dwike Mitchell, is tasteful, elegant, and intriguing.
Stravinsky's "Firebird" is a revelation for classical music lovers as Willie Ruff plays the opening melody with all of the beauty, style and grace of a seasoned orchestral musician. After the change is made from horn to string bass, the duo takes this haunting lullaby to levels of intensity that Stravinsky certainly would have approved of and enjoyed.
Breaking the Silence represents American chamber music at its finest with jazz improvisation that masterfully combines tradition, innovation, and, most of all, honest communication that is almost unparalleled in the 21st century.
Now that the silence has been broken and the air is fresh and clear, let's hope that the Mitchell Ruff Duo continues to play concerts and make CD's for many years to come.

An underrated and lesser known Thrash gem........2007-07-18
I'm surprised that there is only one other review for this monster of a thrash/speed album. This album came out while the thrash movement was winding down in the late eighties yet it still quite easily holds it's own against some of the other big names of that time. What you get here is great thrash/speed metal with mindblowingly intense melodically tinged guitarwork and solos strongly supporting powerful clean vocals. People seem to stay away from thrash being that they prefer more melody to their metal, as opposed to the raw and relentless nature of thrash metal. This album however, manages to just perfectly incorporate melody without overdoing it or rather underdoing it. A must have for any old school thrash fan.

this is a great album from one of the most underrated groups from the bay area.even though they were a little more progressive than thrashy,the guitar team of pearcy and altus is pretty incredible.alot of collectors would like this one too because it includes their original demo.it's amazing that they didn't get father than they did.

don't be duped into buying this.......2005-08-24
While this was released by the same company as Fantasy Dreams (Vol. 1.) this is not performed by the same band/person. While Fantasy Dreams (Vol. 1) included wonderful re-arranged renditions on classic film themes performed by Metasonica, this CD is simply compiled by cheezy synthesized tracks from various budget compilations.
