Welcome back to the cathedral of groove. On his first duo album with drummer Billy Martin, John Medeski is glued to the organ, throwing outswatches of color from the keys while pumping out righteous bass lines with the foot pedals (making this, in a way, another trio effort by the Medeski Martin and Wood stalwarts). Though they permit themselves to push the envelope a bit in free-improv fashion and enjoy their share of eerie effects, Medeski and Martin are on familiar terrain most of the time in constructing funk-fueled tunes that shimmy and sway toward brainy-implosive rather than sweaty-explosive endings. But their offbeat timing schemes and the drummer's expansive palette of sounds and textures keep the music from becoming predictable. --Lloyd Sachs

Album Description

"John Medeski(is an) organist extraordinaire." - NPR

"With a steady base as one-third of the renowned experimental jazz trio Medeski, Martin and Wood, drummer Billy Martin has become one of the most forward-thinking, innovative, and influential percussionists in the music world." - All Music Guide

"Call us crazy, but MMW may be one of the great untapped resources in hip-hop. They develop ideas coolly and carefully, have an incredible sense of space, and when they improvise-with Medeski's keys skipping and dancing flirtatiously through Martin drums and Wood's elastic low-end--they do so together, pushing and teasing each other's solos rather than merely framing them." - Associated Press

"Medeski, Martin and Wood presents the possibilities of jazz to a generation familiar with the iPod, text messaging, and dubs. While traditionalists minimalize their musical merit, it remains difficult to ignore the trio's profound connection with contemporary culture." - All About Jazz

"MMW choose their ingredients carefully, having honed their search-and-deconstruct techniques to razor sharpness. The resultant...flavors-complicated, spicy, sweet, and sour-offer much to savor." - Rolling Stone

John Medeski and Billy Martin started their historic musical partnership over fifteen years ago when Martin invited Medeski to come to his Brooklyn loft studio and play duets. This session resulted in the formation of Medeski Martin and Wood in 1991. But, the two never forgot that initial two-hour jam session, and discussed making a duet record in the future. This is their first duet album together, and Medeski uses the Hammond B3 foot pedals as bass accompaniment to their unique, soulful groove inventions. This album contains several hooky funk tracks and a few intense exploratory improvisations that will blow anyone's socks off.

5 out of 5 stars MM minus the W with an emphasis on the Martin.......2007-05-19

I was surprised to see this album available as I hadn't paid close attention to what's going on in music, but as a MMW fan I was intrigued and picked it up.

The fact that Billy Martin kind of leads this effort interested me as he is always impressive live. Well this album doesn't disappoint in that regard.

As a whole the album does have an MMW feel a la "End of the World Party (Just In Case)". This melodies here, carried by John Medeski, don't quite have the jazz feel that earlier MMW albums had, but that is Ok. It is more of a groove album, and John Medeski uses his organ to fill in the bass parts as well...

However, the real showcase here is Billy Martin. His drumming adds in a jazzy layer through its varying tempos and the talent he shows. That really makes the album, and I think this is what Medeski and Martin intended, and they have succeeded. This is a side project that has been in discussion and the works for years. Fortunately, it was able to be made while The Wood Brothers were off doing there thing.

Ultimately, this a great album that when looked at amongst the catalog of MMW and side projects gives us a chance to have an album that really showcases the drummer.

Album Description

'Notes From The Underground' is Medeski, Martin & Wood's first CD, released in 1991. This independently produced record catapulted them into a major record deal with Gramavision/Ryko in the early nineties. Critics gave 'Notes' very favorable reviews and the album still holds up after 13 years!

notes from the underground is very satisfying if you love versatality in jazz these guys are unbelievable and ive heard stories about them and how they felt it just came together when they met this is no wonder when you hear this album-cd, then what makes them equally as sick is they turn out stuff like snake anthony on the invisible cd snake anthony would have been proud of this one from hermetos daydream, the saint , la garonne, orbits, uncle chubb, all the way through to cant get what you want on the 11th track on the remastered 2nd edition which is worth the extra money that track alone is like the icing on the cake, friday afternoon in the universe, its a jungle in here, out louder with john scofield released late last year tonic was another one just bought it based on the samples im gonna love it these guys are the s--t. i listened and still do to weather report and jaco pastorius thinking that was probably gonna be the extent of my jazz collection boy was i wrong i stumbled upon these guys glad i did oh yeah the dropper ,the song felic starts out with some cool bass guitar riff gonna buy that one too, but i gotta have the time and the space....oh yeah thats when we knew we were the best when snake anthony come on the road with us long live jazz thanks medeski martin wood you are truly off the table!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album from a Great Band.......2005-01-25

I consider MMW to be one of the most innovative bands of their time. They push the limits of what is considered to be jazz with each studio effort. Although I own all of their albums I feel that "Notes From the Underground" is my favorite. It has a sort of loose, free-form feel while maintaining the funky core that they have become known for. Although this album takes a couple listens it leaves you feeling that you've experienced a unique journey.

    Album Description

"Drop the Needle is comprised of loops, odd-metered rhythms, scratch-turntable fare, and intermittent stabs at humor ... Martin is a groove merchant." -DOWN BEAT

"Recording as illy B, MMW drummer Billy Martin produced a series of breakbeats for DJs, shipped them off to some friends, and released Drop the Needle--an enthralling, diverse collection of beautiful noise grooves." - VILLAGE VOICE

The illy B Eats series is a compilation of the funkiest dance-hall beats by Medeski Martin & Wood drummer Billy Martin. These drum tracks were specifically recorded for DJs, musicians, and fans of Martin's grooves. Performed, mixed, and mastered to make even the jaded nod their heads, it's bumpin', thumpin', and you'll be humpin' to these breaks!

Billy Martin continues to invite all artists for collaborations that contribute mixes using his beats from previous illy B Eats records. The past releases spawned two illy B Eats Remixed CDs (Drop the Needle and Antidote). Artists involved included Miho Hatori (Gorillaz, Cibo Matto, Smokey& Miho), Jennifer Charles (Lovage, Elysian Fields), John Medeski, Chris Wood, DJ Olive, Scotty Hard (Wu-Tang Clan, Cyro Baptista, John Zorn, Yo-Yo Ma, Paul Simon), and Calvin Weston (John Lurie's Lounge Lizards, James "Blood" Ulmer). These CDs contain all the original tracks released between 2001 and 2006 as illy B Eats Vol. 1, 2, and 3. Produced by Wu-Tang and Prince Paul producer Scotty Hard.

      Album Description

"A veritable feast of rhythmic improvisation/extrapolation/sensation in the hands of masters who just wanna have fun; two sets of trap drums, hand percussion and vintage drum machines can rock the world...playful go-go swing-to-drum battle-to-funky soft-shoe shuffle." - JAZZTIMES

A celebration of the 10th anniversary of this percussion duo's first release (Percussion Duets), and testimony to the unique creative force of these former John Lurie National Orchestra/Lounge Lizards percussionists! A powerful mix of textures, grooves, blood and guts from Africa to South Philly. The sound quality is excellent and you can really lose yourself in this "otherly" dimension, which these two artists create every time they perform together. Many people showed up for this dynamic duo's show at Houston Hall, which may recall those famous "drum battles" staged in the 1950s. This special mixture of intensity and beauty proves Martin & Weston to be one of the great drum duos of our time.

        Album Description

Double drums...but not like you've heard them before, except maybe a rare Milton Graves percussion duet with equal strength DJ magic added. You get moody abstract colors, textures and avant-funk jaunts that are dark and explosive. 'For No One In Particular' can be very cinematic, yet you will groove to it like angels and demons at play. It also has the drive of harcore punk rock when it gets rolling. Plus, DJ Logic's fans haven't heard a feature album in two years! This live concert was recorded in May 2003 at NYC's downtown avant-garde club, Tonic. It was mixed by Billy Martin & Mike Fossenkemper (Bill Laswell, Herbie Hancock, DJ Krush, Carl Craig, Prince Paul, Teo Macero) and recorded live by David Baker (Medeski Martin & Wood, Jack DeJohnette).

        G. Calvin Weston and Billy Martin's musical brotherhood started in 1987 in John Lurie's Lounge Lizards and The John Lurie National Orchestra. G. Calvin Weston was a big part of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time band and the harmolodic funk movement of the '70s.

I can't believe I'm the first person to review this album! This is one of my favorite ever jazz albums of the oughts, and I think it should be in the home of anyone hip enough to look it up on-line.
Like I said, this really could have been a disaster. Take The John Lurie National Orchestra- subtract John Lurie and add a DJ. But this is not a nightmare of percussion. Instead you have one of the most densely textured CDs I've ever heard that wasn't put together by King Tubbys. It's psychedelic in a way that rock music just isn't anymore. I feel stoned just looking at the cover. This will sound futuristic even after we run out of future. I can't recommend this highly enough. If I were to review this album when I was in first grade I'd give it infinity stars.

"Billy Martin is a drummer's drummer, meaning he lays down scattergun jazz-funk jammage with Medeski Martin and Wood and uses his own Amulet Records imprint to explore breakbeat science (the Illy B Eats series) and tribalistic solo drum circling (Black Elk Speaks). But rarely has this in-the-pocket explorer proven himself to be so unbelievably nasty as on his latest solo venture..." - CMJ

Following Billy Martin's first solo CD Black Elk Speaks, he set out on a one-man tour of the Northeast U.S. to refute the myth that he is only a jazz-funk drummer. This CD, which contains live interpretations of some of the Black Elk music, is a testimony to Martin's immense talent. Extremely dynamic and more intimate than the studio recording - audiophiles take note.

Billy Martin is a percussion guru who has worked with artists such as Bob Moses, Chuck Mangione, the Lounge Lizards, Iggy Pop(believe it or not), and the avant-garde trio Medeski, Martin, and Wood.
Aside from working with other musicians, Billy has released several solo and duet albums dedicated solely to percussion. "Solo Live Tonic 2002" is the latest installment. The first three tracks are on the drumset, with some extra trinkets (cowbells, more bells, woodblocks). "Boquet" is a subtle intro, moving around different tempos, pulses and such. By the time "Max Moon" has started, Billy has settled on a steady tempo for the most part. All hell breaks loose by the third track "Winding Road to Tree House"; he flurries around the toms with little drags on the snare. He then solos over the top of a faster samba bass drum pattern.
He then does a piece called "Six Grandfathers" consisting of mainly bass drums and gong. This is from his 2001 release "Black Elk Speaks". After this he provides some background information on "Black Elk".
The rest of the disc covers a vast array of percussion toys. Talking drums, bird whistles, and burundi drums, to name a few.
This live disc that clocks in at just over an hour, does a lot to convey Martin's vast knowledge and background in many different areas of percussion. It's like knowing five different languages, but you can always tell it's him. So, he's speaking all of these languages of percussion, but each one with a unique, Billy Martin inflection.
Be sure to check out some of his other percussion discs.

        Album Description

Here's the long awaited CD reissue of this super-rare midwest hard rock outfit! It's an extremely rare collector record that was recorded in 1979 and released on the band's own label! Punchy hard rock with screaming lead guitars all over the place! Nice package with lyrcis, bio and tons of original band photos!

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Classic metal.......2001-11-03

A rare collector's item for fans of classic heavy rock. Amulet recorded only one record and pressed it themselves. Monster records has done a great job remastering this album. If you like Grand Funk, Pat Travers, and other 70's heavy rockers, you will enjoy this. For an independent band, they are superb musicians. LPs of this go for around $300 if you can find one. Great job on the cd.

          Album Description

"Dave Burrell's unaccompanied recital of new compositions astonished with his range of expression and emotional depth. His sound was admirably fat, [and] his articulation was incisive." - NEW YORK TIMES

"Dave Burrell [is] a consistently insightful pianist [and] a scintillating solo performer." - VILLAGE VOICE

"Dave Burrell's solos are pianistic pearls." - DOWN BEAT

"Billy Martin is a drummer's drummer ... but rarely has this in-the-pocket explorer proven himself to be so unbelievably nasty as on his latest solo venture." - CMJ

"Medeski Martin and Wood bridge the gap between the New York downtown jazz scene, which features the avant-garde guru John Zorn, and the New England jam-band touring circuit, led by the popular improv-rock group Phish ... drummer Billy Martin consistently strikes loose-limbed, flexible grooves." - ROLLING STONE

An extreme, improvised, live musical journey that resembles modern classical and free jazz - and what makes it work is the unique chemistry between the two musicians. This recording documents the second impromptu meeting of two unique musical personalities during one week in October 2005.

Dave Burrell has forged his own unique avant-garde style of playing since the 1970s in New York, where he played with Albert Ayler, Pharoah Sanders, and David Murray. Billy Martin, best known for his percussion work and drumming with avant-funk bands Medeski Martin and Wood and John Lurie's Lounge Lizards, is also well known for his experimentation with many forms of experimental, African, jazz, funk, and classical music.
