5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2007-05-21

Why this guy is not more mainstream is beyond me. He is a wonderful talent.

5 out of 5 stars Sample that...........2007-01-30

You have probably heard Joe Sample and the Crusaders; however, "Spellbound" is nothing like it.
Much better; it is probably Sample's finest recording until this date.
Joined by Al Jarreau and Michael Franks on Vocals; Omar Hakim on Drums and Marcus Miller on Bass; JS delivers a distinctive and amazing groovy Crossover, Soul Jazz album.
How wrong can you be adding this CD to your collection?
Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars really good collection.......2006-07-24

Joe Sample is my all time favorite Keyboard player Ever. I love his Runs&his signature sound.this album has a nice blend of styles&Versatility that is always a trademark of Joe Sample's sound&Musical Complexity. i always enjoy the build up, the spacing&overall timing where Joe Sample's music is concearned.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Treasure.......2006-06-24

I don't know if I've ever heard a better collection of songs!
Joe Sample is a masterful pianist-composer. Now I know why Eric Clapton had such a difficult time trying to play with these guys, which he was honest enough to admit (and we all know Eric is no slouch). Seven Years of Good Luck is an incredibly complex, yet beautiful and haunting song all at the same time. U Turn is a treasure also with outstanding vocals and probably the best ending to a song that I've ever heard. You can't say enough about this album. And don't pass by Michael Franks on Leading Me Back To You and Joe's piano solo. Quite simply, this is music at it's best. I'll never forget the first time I heard this - I was blown away.

5 out of 5 stars spellbound is a classic.......2006-04-07

I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO SMOOTH JAZZ FOR OVER 20 YRS AND I AM THE KIND OF GUY THAT WOULD TRAVEL OVER 800 MILES FOR A CONCERT. WHERE I LIVE WE MIGHT GET ABOUT 2 OR 3 GOOD JAZZ CONCERTS A YEAR AND I MEAN MAYBE. WHEN WE DO HAVE THEM YOU CAN COUNT THE CROWED ON ONE HAND AND I THINK THAT IS VERY SAD.ANYWAY I HAVE A VERY LARGE COLLECTION OF JAZZ AND SPELLBOUND IS MY FAVORITE COMPLETE CD. WHAT I MEAN IS SOMETIMES I CAN BUY A CD AND 3 OR 4 TRACKS OF A 10 SONG CD MAYBE OUTSTANDING, BUT SPELLBOUND IS A CD THAT YOU DONT HAVE TO SKIP TRACKS, JUST SIT BACK AND PLAY IT THROUGH AND THROUGH. THERE ARENT MANY CD'S LIKE THAT,THERE MAYBE A FEW BUT NOT MANY. MY SAYING ON MUSIC IS "GOOD MUSIC BUILDS GOOD CHARACTER" AND THIS CD FITS THE BILL. GOOD BANDS ARE HARD TO FIND NOWADAYS, REAL MUSICIANS NOW ARE AGING AND MUSIC IS NOW OFTEN BEING REPEATED OVER AND OVER BUT THIS CD SOUNDS JUST AS FRESH AS THE DAY I FRIST HEARD IT. ITS,(TIMELESS) AND WAY AHEAD OF ITS TIME... CAN YOU FEEL ME?.

MOST OF THE FILMS FOR WHICH THESE PIANO PIECES WERE WRITTEN ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE, SO WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE THIS WONDERFUL RECORDING. FORGET ABOUT MORE EXPENSIVE VERSIONS. THIS IS THE BEST INTERPRETATION OF THE WARSAW CONCERTO ON THE MARKET!

3 out of 5 stars Warsaw Concerto.......2005-10-09

The version of the toon was not what I expected. I wanted more the "popular" version.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Movie Pieces.......2003-10-04

I am a pinaist, and several of thses pieces find themselve in my repertoire, and by hearing them on this cd, one is able to truly appreciate the composition and performance of these songs, which are not very popular nowadays. A great collection that I highly recommend to all musicians and music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.......2003-02-07

If you like light works for piano and orchestra, this is the BEST I have heard. With the popularity of movie themes in this genre, this CD will not disappoint you. There are some great undiscovered gems on this CD. Every pianist should have this to 'expand their horizons'. Simply the best!

3 out of 5 stars It's ok.......2007-02-02

This is my second purchase of this album used, lmao. I had it before, but my music style has changed. It has it's moments. I love "Spellbound" and "Rock House" as dumb as those songs are they have some tight house beats!

If you can find it used and cheap buy it! I know I did, lmao @ "Vibeology" what a song.

4 out of 5 stars Sophmore Album is Another Success.......2007-01-06

Paula Abdul became one of the most popular artists in 1988 when she recorded her debut album "Forever your Girl" that eventually would sell over 17 Million copies, 3 years later in 1991 she was still popular, and that wasn't strange since she had been on the charts constantly since. This album isn't as full of dance-pop as her debut though. Here she'll even try a few ballads and shows other sides of herself then choreographic uptempo songs. She had clearly matured and wanted to deliver something more personal (She even co-wrote songs this time) which we can see on slower songs like "Will You Marry Me" and "Blowing Kisses on the Wind", both hits but most of all the big hit "Rush Rush" a ballad that reached #1. The song had an very special video directed by George Lucas! and feauturing Keanu Reeves portaying her boyfriend. Midtempo "Promise of a New Day" also reached number 1 and "Vibeology" a classic uptempo became a decent hit aswell, most other songs of this album that weren't singles are biuncy uptempo's kind of like on her debut. Eventhough this album is 15 years old, it doesn't sound dated at all, many of the songs would still sound fresh today. "Spellbound" eventually sold 8 million copies, which isn't bad, but unfortunately she wouldn't have any more hits afterwards and her third and last album "Head Over Heels" didn't sell good at all. Possibly cause she tried to emancipate herself from the youthful dance-pop girl she was in the beginning of her career. However, another good album from a good artist that sadly doesn't record albums anymore.

4 out of 5 stars A great album marred by silly political song.......2006-11-12

Paula Abdul made some great albums and superb videos and this is as good as any--though one likes her first best. The only minor quibble is the second track political song. One's patience for artists telling one how to think is slight and, since the song is an attack on George Bush SR, it is terribly dated and incomprehensible out of historical context. Just shut up and sing please. Leave the thinking to the people who don't have mansions and limos and have to work for a living.
Still. Excellent album and highly recommended. Strange cover though with Paula dressed up like a crow......................

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't stand the test of time.......2006-08-21

I was going through my old cassette collection (yes, I still have my cassettes), and I came across this album. Listening to it for the first time in years made me sort of cringe and feel embarrassed that I listened to this back in the day. What made Paula Abdul's debut album FOREVER YOUR GIRL such a guilty pleasure was that it was fun dance/pop songs that didn't take themselves so seriously. A little formulaic it was, but who couldn't help but love bubble-gum classics such as "The Way that You Love Me," "Straight-Up," or "Cold-Hearted". After the album sold millions of copies, there were criticisms about Paula's singing talent (and speculation that she didn't even sing some of the songs on that album). So what did Paula do? She decided on her second album that she wanted to be taken more seriously, and also prove herself as a singer. So she enlisted the help of what was supposed to be the hot production team of the Family Stand (remember "Ghetto Heaven"?). The result: a bunch of overproduced, way too slick dance songs, and a few power ballads. The power ballads aren't too bad; "Blowin Kisses in the Wind" and "Rush Rush" are actually quite good. But the dance songs sound much too dated and don't stand up to any of the other dance classics of the early 90s (Cathy Dennis, CeCe Peniston, Dee-Lite, etc). "Promise of a New Day" is OK, but the old joke of the day was to count how many times she actually repeats the phrase "promise of a new day" in that song. "Rock House" was an attempt at social consciousness (we loved you, Paula, for your dance moves, not your political views). "U?" is produced and written by Prince, but sounds like one of his throwaways. "Alright Tonight" sounds out of place as it tries to channel Jimmy Buffet. And "To You" is just there...nothing special about it. As for her singing, it was slightly improved, but still not the greatest voice in music you'll ever hear. The early 90's was a weird time in music, before grunge, when Michael Bolton, Vanilla Ice, and MC Hammer, as well as hair metal bands, dominated the music charts. Therefore it's no wonder that this album is characteristic of that awkward moment in music history.

5 out of 5 stars I'm still Spellbound after all these years!.......2006-06-11

Back before the new millenium, before the music industry started to go downhill, before wanna-be's like Britney came along, there was REAL talent!

Artists like Mariah, Whitney, Celine, Janet, Gloria and Paula are REAL talents and they will always be far superior to people like Britney!

Paula actually SINGS! She has a VOICE! I have loved Paula since her Forever Your Girl album and this is another favorite and must have for teen pop and people who are fans of Paula! Forget the wanna-be's like Britney Spears, Paula is unique, has an amazing voice and all her songs are fun to dance and sing along to!

ALL of Paula's songs on here are 5 star quality!

This album has so many different types of music, it's just incredible! From the ballads like Rush Rush and Blowing Kisses In The Wind to dance numbers like The Promise Of A New Day and Vibeology to a country style like Alright Tonight to a weird and cool sounding song like Spellbound to a more rock sounding song like Rock House! All 11 tracks are so awesome and unique to this day and any fan of teen pop should pick up this Paula album!

Trust me, it's REAL talent!

And like the song Vibeology goes, "Go Paula, Go Paula, Go, Go, Go Paula!" You go girl, you show the music world what real talent is!

ROZSA'S MUSIC THRILLED ME AS A CHILD AND IT STILL DOES NOW. A MUST FOR ANY LOVER OF FILM SCORES.

5 out of 5 stars Rozsa's Best Work.......2007-01-11

Miklos Rozsa composed some impressive scores. These are among his best. These recordings and selections are outstanding. Mother's Love from BEN-HUR is very emotional. The Spellbound: Concerto is also included.

4 out of 5 stars A good start for those who are getting acquainted with Rozsa.......2004-06-15

This CD contains some of Miklos Rozsa's finest film scores, but the pieces are abbrieviated (some of them are only up to 5 minutes in length). Nevertheless, they are still good. My biggest problem with the album was there was not enough pieces from QUO VADIS (my personal favorite). Other than that, the CD is a fine start for those of us (like me) who are getting acquianted with this excellent composer.

5 out of 5 stars Master Musician, Early Work.......2000-10-07

Clifford Jordan was a master musician who is regrettably underrated. So versatile - he complemented Dolphy in Mingus' band, no mean feat, which you can hear on some classic recordings. He also played with Horace Silver, Slide Hampton, and on some excellent Japanese releases with Richard Davis on bass. But the work that best shows his warm, innovative but down-to-earth character is the work where he is leader. I feel the classic is the Glass Bead Game Sessions, coming back into print soon I see, and the Mapleshade label releases are all worthwhile. This early recording, where he's already fully mature, playing his own compositions, is an essential part of the story. Good jazz, not background music, but comfortable, full, rich and mellow, no matter where he ventures, here, he's always still at home. You can't ever go wrong where Clifford is leader.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated master.......2000-06-18

A little-known classic. Jordan is still best known for his stint in Mingus's band; his other key association was with the pianist Cedar Walton, who plays on this recording. (Other interesting associations later in his career were with the Third Stream pianist Ran Blake and with the singer Carmen McRae.) This disc is a late-bebop classic, with Jordan applying a tenor style suggestive of Dexter Gordon's to a set of intriguing originals (including "Toy", a tune later recorded by Cannonball Adderley and Anthony Braxton[!]) and some standards--the highlight probably being the incendiary blues "Au Privave". Jordan, like his fellow Mingus alumnus Booker Ervin, deserves to be much more celebrated in the annals of the music; this disc gives a compelling instance of his art.

Mama's got a squeezebox, and she definitely knows how to play it. For a decade, Ireland's Sharon Shannon has been nibbling at the edges of folk, taking a lot of chances, and making some glorious music. This summary of her work shows just how far she's gone--teaming her playing with reggae producer Dennis Bovell was just one daring move--and how good she is, both on the accordion and the fiddle. Add in a bit of unreleased material (including some singing from former Waterboy Mike Scott) and you've got an excellent representation of her solo work to date. If this is what she's achieved in her first 10 years, the possibilities for the future are staggering. Worldly, wise, and completely wonderful. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars If you can only own one Sharon Shannon CD..........2005-09-20

Then this is the one you should have! This compilation of Sharon Shannon's work is the most complete, although its become somewhat dated since the release of her last two CDs. The disc includes many of her best: "Mouth of the Tobique", "Blackbird", "Bag of Cats" and many other enjoyable but perhaps not well known pieces like "Song of the Rosy Cross". This CD would be an excellent introduction to her music, especially the more traditional tunes. The only quality this CD lacks is Shannon's more recent practice of teaming up for "seshuns" with other world music artists, some famous in the U.S. and some less so.

If purchased along with one of her more recent works, (I'd recommend The Diamond Mountain Sessions) you would have a fairly complete idea of the kind of musician Shannon is and how she loves to collaborate with other artists.

This is a "must own" however for any Sharon Shannon fan. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Irish and Roots Music, Great Recording.......2001-04-08

This compilation of Sharon Shannon's accordian based music is simply wonderful. It is primarily Irish sounding music, but with a brew of American, Swedish, French Canadian, Scottish, and other ethnic tunes thrown in. The accompanying musicians are top notch and the meldodic sound of accordian and fiddles is a treat. This is a long, harmonic, melodic, highly rhythmic, and well played CD, and I haven't tired of it after probably 10 listenings in the last 2 months. (My wife may be tired of hearing it--she just politiely closed the door as I listen to this lively music once again..) If you like Irish and other ethnic tunes played musically, it's hard to imagine that this wouldn't become one of your favorites.

3 out of 5 stars too much of a good thing?.......2000-09-06

Owning this album is like having a pound of nutmeg in the cabinet; it's nice enough, but you don't use it all at once. It makes a good mix-in, though. (I was disappointed that it didn't have "Coridinio", which I still think is her best.)

5 out of 5 stars If you can't go to Clare, you can imagine you are there.......1999-12-22

I have been to County Clare, and Shannon's music is pure there. I don't think you will find a fresher breath of Irish air anywhere on a CD. And as they say in Ireland, if you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes. Sharon Shannon like the Irish weather blows alternately gentle and fierce. A great album.

5 out of 5 stars Great music! Great variety! Great price!.......1999-11-18

This is the favorite cd for everyone in our family (ages 9, 12, and 40-something parents). Sharon is accompanied by a variety of superb musicians on tunes from her previously released cd's. She's kinda like the Ry Cooder of Irish accordion music: she's at home in a variety of styles, excels at all of them, and makes music that's joyous and moving. She and her musical companions will definitely have you tapping your feet, if not dancing across the floor. If you like traditional Irish music or Irish music with an electric update, you'll like this. You may not realize how good an accordion can sound, til you've heard Sharon's dancing fingers. This cd will be right at home on your shelf with the Bothy Band, Altan, Solas, and Donal Lunny's Coolfin.
