Album Description
Sleep No More is rightly regarded as the finest of the band's three albums for Polydor, with the stripped back sound of the first album supplanted by a monster drum sound, and featuring the brilliant 'Dark Parade', written after the failed attempt to resolve the US embassy 'hostage' crisis of 1980, as well as bonus tracks in the shape of the brilliant, should-have-been-a-hit 'Eye Of The Lens'. Renascent. 2006.

Customer Reviews:
not a goth album.......2007-07-23
I have to disagree with the previous reviewer. The Comsat Angels were NEVER a Goth band...they never adopted the imagery of that genre and their lyrics were far more sophisticated. Yes, there is darkness and alienation but this album takes you to a unique place that is worth revisiting again and again.
A somewhat one-sided goth album, with good bonus tracks.......2007-03-23
The second album by The Comsat Angels sounds a lot more professional than the first one. Sleep No More focuses on guitar and bass, and the awkward pounding rhythms from the first album are replaced by more subtle percussion. Many songs have actual discernible bass lines. The production is also much better. Stephen Fellows' voice sounds stronger and more authoritative, maybe because he became a better singer by this point, or maybe because the echoing production makes his voice sound deeper. The liner notes show that the band was experimenting with Martin-Hannett-style recording techniques (e.g. recording from the bottom of an elevator shaft), though they don't explicitly cite Hannett as an influence.
The first two songs show energy and atmosphere that were generally absent from Waiting For A Miracle. "Eye Dance" has an aggressive, droning guitar line and a booming chorus showcasing Fellows' newfound voice. The song is similar to "Independence Day" from the first album in the way it uses pauses in the guitar line for dramatic effect, but hey, there's nothing wrong with relying on one's strengths. And "Sleep No More" is the best slow song the band ever wrote. The music consists of many layered keyboards with a muffled beat in the background. There are no distinct hooks. The keyboards form a foggy, ethereal blur, but this happens to reflect the mood described in the lyric, which seems to be about how Fellows and his probably-female friend feel lost without purpose in a city. The song is moving because Fellows adopts the more down-to-earth persona that he showed in the best songs on Waiting For A Miracle. In this song, he's just a young man who is "sure there must be somewhere we can go," though the song's slow pace and the faraway echo on his voice appear to indicate otherwise.
Unfortunately, Fellows is in full rock-poet mode for the rest of the album. Sleep No More is very much in line with the goth rock movement that was emerging at the time. It's full of slow tempos, droning guitar lines, echoing drums, and vaguely unhappy sentiments like "it won't mean anything," "it was going to take so long, but it has almost gone," "it's so funny but I'm not laughing," and so on. What "it" is, we can only guess. There's just nothing to catch hold of in these songs. The liner notes claim that the album is a powerful emotional experience, but actually the album conveys no concrete emotions. Maybe you just need to be in a certain state of mind to appreciate it. Or maybe there was some kind of general mood at the time that got lost over the past twenty years.
But the music is just as vague as the lyrics. The album's focus on guitar and bass reveals just how few memorable guitar hooks there are. The second half of the album is particularly lacking. Songs like "Diagram" and "Light Years" just don't stand out very much, whereas "Goat Of The West" and "Restless" basically repeat "Eye Dance" and "Sleep No More" in style. Not to say there are no good parts, though -- "Our Secret" has some guitar texture in the verses, unlike many of the other songs, and "Dark Parade," though monotonous for most of its duration, ends with a completely unexpected, rousing crescendo.
There are eight bonus tracks at the end, like on the reissue of Waiting For A Miracle, and they actually improve the album a lot, again like the bonus tracks for the first album. "Eye Of The Lens" is an excellent single. The lyrics are more detailed than on almost all of the songs on the album itself, the fast pace adds some much-needed variation, and there's even a cool Bernard-Sumner-style drone-guitar solo at the end. "Another World" is a slow song, but here again there's evidence that the band was trying to experiment with more different styles than the album might suggest. There's a brief piano solo and, strangely enough, a little recurring keyboard rhythm that almost sounds like reggae. Maybe they should have just gone ahead and made a straight-up reggae song. The last two bonus tracks are closer to Waiting For A Miracle in style. Like most of the songs on that album, they rely mostly on the accumulation of loud drums backed by keyboards. "Mass," the one previously unreleased out-take, was later reworked into a B-side around the time of the band's third album. The later version is much less aggressive, though, and the out-take presented here has a satisfying strength in its rhythm section. The four demos, however, are all fairly boring. Mostly they just closely follow the final versions, though the alternate take of "Goat Of The West" has slightly different lyrics.
To summarize, Sleep No More sounds better than Waiting For A Miracle, but it lacks the vulnerable charm of the debut and doesn't have enough great musical ideas to compensate. Many of the songs tend to blend together and sound monotonous. If you're putting together a collection of goth rock, this album might be worth a look, but Waiting For A Miracle is in some sense more interesting, and the next album, Fiction, is a lot more fun.
Must have.......2007-02-20

A Brilliant Album, Lost No More.......2006-10-11
Thanks to this 2006 re-release, we've been given a chance to rediscover a classic album by the great underrated band, Comsat Angels. Many have described the music here as gloomy, but don't get the idea that this is the "shoegazer" sound of bands that came later. There is a power to many of the tracks, such as The Eye Dance, Dark Parade and Be Brave. It has been said the drums were moved next to the elevator shaft and recorded from several floors, creating a dynamic beat--such is the craft this band put into their music. The original album included 10 songs; this re-release has several bonus tracks, including Eye Of The Lens, one of the Comsats' greatest songs. Renascent has packaged the CD with a fine booklet including photos, album synoposis and quotes by Stephen Fellows, the Comsats' front man. With music this good, everyone should have this album in their collection (and on their iPod) now that it's lost no more.
If I Could Only Give 6 Stars.......2006-07-09
Sleep No More is truly truly one of the great albums of all time that no one knows about. Granted, it is now two decades plus since it came out so it will feel a little dated, but....not as much as you would guess. This was an exceptional, amazing album.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD!!.......2003-08-07
This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.
Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20
Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.

Customer Reviews:
New Age flute, be gone!!.......2005-12-31
Nativitas is a good recording of 23 Christmas classics, such as "Adam Lay Ybounden" and "O Magnum Mysterium". I say "good" because interspersed among some of the pieces is this cloying New Age flute. It really gets annoying when the flute plays over the choir on the last song, "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing". I bought the CD to hear the excellent choir, not a flute that doesn't know its place.
If you aren't annoyed by the flute, then you can mark the CD up to excellent. It is more ethereal than happy, so take that into consideration before buying. (I like "ethereal" better myself.) And a poor choice was made in including "Once in Royal David's City" without a solo for the first verse. King's College does that one so much better, New College should have tried something else.
With those caveats, I recommend the CD.
Buy it and love it.......2002-12-28
This cd continues to be my favourite Christmas cd, after repeated playings, year after year. I can't say that there is anything that I don't like about it, it's absolutely fabulous, a real gem.
What Christmas Is REALLY All About.......1999-11-22
During the rush of the Christmas season, oftentimes we forget what Christmas is really all about. In an exceptionally beautiful and reverent way, NATIVITAS reminds us of how God's love came to us in the birth of Jesus Christ. The music takes us on a journey of a spiritual nature with beautiful a cappella voices of the Choir of New College. An exquisite flute transitions medieval, classical and contemporary carols which have been intelligently arranged thus giving the listener a peaceful and reflective musical experience.
Especially beautiful are "The Little Road to Bethlehem" and the "Stille Nacht".
NATIVITAS is a celebration of what all christians hold most dear--God's grace and God's love for each one of us. Through listening, it reminds us once again what Christmas is REALLY all about. Highly recommended.

Beautiful Christmas Music.......1999-12-11
We first heard this CD on NPR while returning home from a business trip. We ordered the CD as soon as we could. The music is as close to perfect as choral music can be. The songs are short, so the pace changes appropriately. Most of the selections are familiar Christmas carols with a few surprises. We've sent copies to our friends to enjoy.

Great Relaxation CD.......2007-02-17
This CD is perfect for relaxation. I am a pre-K teacher and use it during nap time. The kids who don't sleep enjoy listening to the music. The songs are absoutely beautiful and unique.
Very good relaxation.......2006-08-01
J'ai beaucoup aimé ce cd, relax et très bien fait. Les arrangements sont excellent et la qualité sonore impecable.Pour ces raisons, je lui donne un 5*.Je le recommande sans hésitation.I'M 52 years old.
Great trio..........2003-06-26
I really like the way the instruments blended together on this disc. Definitely soothing music, to take you to a heavenly realm.
very relaxing, soothing, and comforting music.......2001-07-22
this is a really good CD...i can listen to it over and over...the sound is very smooth...and well blended...you will enjoy it!
A Treat Inside Out.......2001-05-06
I am usually a voice-oriented music listener and for that reason it is a huge surprise how much I loved this instrumental album! Everything about this gentle CD is a treat. I wish there were a picture here of the cover, because it is worthy of being framed. First your disc arrives, and you see this beautiful painting on the front. Then you tear off the plastic and open it, to find that the disc itself also has a beautiful painting on it. It feels like a birthday present! Then you stick it in your CD player, and the most lovely sound comes out.
Gentle instruments play instrumental melodies that even those of us who normally prefer lyrics can really get into. It is one happy, gentle, strangely familiar tune after another. It absolutely transforms the atmosphere of your house into a happy, magical place, full of gentle cheer.
When the lovely album is over, you just want to slip it carefully back into all that beautiful packaging, give it a kiss and place it carefully on a prominent place on your CD shelf for everyone to see. It's the sort of album that will never wear out or grow old. You'll want to pass it on to your grandchildren!

Album Description
28 songs from the soundtracks of the most popular films of the pre-noir and noir genres.
Customer Reviews:
Skip this CD.......2007-02-13
This CD seems to have gone out of its way to trnsfer the worst VHS tapes to CD Audio and package it as classic film scores. The short excerpts are very bad and fade out just as the tempo begins to build. If you love film noir, skip this CD. If you are interested in film noir, skip this CD.
Great soundtracks "from the original films!".......2006-08-06
I feel compelled to respond to some of the negative criticism below. This is not a collection of restored and re-recorded scores by a modern orchestra. These are the original soundtracks from the films themselves. Given that they are in mono and suffer from age, they cannot possibly be judged by the same criteria as a modern recording. BUT, as a collection of noir soundtracks, they are superb. It's a huge list of title tracks from great films noir. And, as many of these are unavailable as restored and re-recorded scores, it is a wonderful disc to have in your collection. If the only scores you like are high-fidelity, however, then this is definitely not for you. But this disc also can't be judged by those sonic standards. For those of you who desire to listen to some of this more obscure film music--just as it would sound playing the video on your TV--then this is a great disc to have.
Good for fans.......2006-01-18
Given that there are very few Film Noir compilation soundtrack cd's available, I'd say this one works just fine for what it is. It's certainly not the most polished work, but it does have a lot of film scores and no fan should be without it. I'm glad I bought it.
It's at today missing for me........2006-01-15
I am waiting this CD in my home. At today it's missing. Take note of this, please.
Not For Audiophiles, But Wonderful for the Rest of Us!.......2006-01-13
I thought that this disc was quite possibly the best attempt so far at cataloging some of the best themes of the film-noir genre. It leaves out the dialogue snippets that break up the feel and mood of the music, and some of the selections are, quite simply, marvelous. Also, the compilers here were brave enough to include some of the rarer and seldom-mentioned noirs for inclusion here. If you're an audiophile, you must realize that these recordings are SIXTY YEARS OLD, for goodness sakes. I'll never understand why some people put so much stake in stereo sound and crystal clear remastering. I happen to feel that the gritty mono (which really isn't nearly as bad as has been suggested) heightens the hardbitten feel of these works. So, if you're someone who enjoys authentic film music, give this a shot! If you're expecting something butchered, repackaged, and changed around for modern tastes, don't bother with this collection!
