The let's-get-our-act-together album........2007-03-18
Being the second HIM album I have ever listened to, it had been the most disappointing one, but that was before I met this album's predecessor, and after that, I think I could come up with aobjective assessment of how HIM has progressed into this.
First off, this isn't your gothic/romantic rock/metal album. This is something entirely different. It has fast-paced songs with heart-wrenching choruses, atmospheric keyboards, a mixture of acoustic and electric guitars and good solos. Lyrically, it can't rival Razorblade Romance or Greatest Lovesongs, but overall it is great. These were the upsides.
Now, onto the downsides of this album. I don't know what exactly Ville Valo found wrong with the voice he used in the first two albums of HIM, but his new voice is certainly a downside, because it makes the album sound like it had been sung by a thirteen year old kid who was somehow let into the band; not at all good. The second downside is that, this album also marks HIM's growing obsession with making riffs sound almost overrated. The overall fluffy and crunchy guitar riffs do have certain strong points, but, like in "This Fortress of Tears", they sometimes are unnecessary. The third downside is the final song, "The Path", the unnecessarily stretched out meant-to-be epic. A two-to-three minutes cut out from this closer could make it amazing, but it just soars below average, and brings the album to a bad end. The fourth downside is the placement of "Soul on Fire"; while it is a great song, after "Sweet Pandemonium", it shifts the mood too far away, and you can't help but laugh out loud after you are done with your shock. Last but not least, the album's overall sound carries a hint of, "Well, we did great stuff, but we want to put some of Deep Shadows stuff into this too, so let's create a mixture of Razorblade, Greatest Lovesongs and Deep Shadows in this!". And this approach doesn't help the album, it feels somewhat out of place.
Overall, this is the only interruption of the downward spiral HIM has gotten into after and with Deep Shadows, but it is a good album and is among this band's top three. I'd highly recommend it for those that have a taste for somewhat gothic and rocky albums.
True definition of Music.......2006-11-10
HIM defines music in a way no other band can ever hope to achieve. This album was and is one I listen to a lot. Most music today is either pop fluff or rap agony. I want music that gets my blood pumping and prepares me for another day at work.
i've tried them, but this is just misserable music........2006-07-30
Ive listened to tracks from various albums and don't see why people like them. I mean, the vocalist always sounds like he's singing with a cold and I can't see anything spectacular with the instruments.
Even though I havn't given them much on stars, i'm giving them the one there because I see potential, I don't mind the "Wings of a Butterfly" song because it's a bit dark and has a catchy riff. But I'll have to be convinced to change my views.
Ville Valo-the poet.......2006-06-12
This is the last HIM cd to finish my collection and what a way to finish it. Another great solid album from HIM, not one bad song on the whole album. If you like HIM and dont have this album you have no time to waste. I cant say this enough Ville Valo is a great poet!!!!! HIM is the best band ever period
Love Metal by HIM.......2006-05-26
Plain and simple, this is HIM's greatest album ever!!!! I simply LOVE every song on this entire album. And don't let the number of tracks mislead you. The album is just seven minutes short of an hour! The shortest song is Soul on Fire at 4:02. BUY THIS ALBUM,IT'S TOTALLY WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!!

Album Description
And Love Said No: Greatest Hits 1997-2004 is a digitally remastered anthology celebrating
HIM's first decade together with an updated selection of the band's biggest hits.
HIM recorded two new songs for this set, the title track and a rocking cover of Neil Diamond's classic "Solitary Man."
Customer Reviews:
Essential for any HIM fan.......2007-06-08
I absolutely fell in love with HIM last fall when my friend "introduced" the music to me. It took a few weeks, but by now they are my favorite band by far. I can't get enough of the songs on this compilation. The newest cover, "Solitary Man" adds everything that Neil Diamond didn't do when it was originally written; I even let me parents listen to the cover and they think that its great.
I have recommended this compilation to all of my friends, and several of them have either started listening to HIM little by little thereafter or have simply fallen in love with the band. I could not have been happier with this compilation and am looking forward to the rest of HIM's career as well as the July release of Venus Doom.
When Love and Cheese Embrace.......2007-05-16
This three year-old European compilation was just released in the States, and it provides a handy overview of HIM's homegrown Scandinavian love metal, which can be of interest to rock fans on the prowl for new sounds but who don't feel like diving into the proper albums. However, this collection of singles washes out the already miniscule creativity and excitement of the proper HIM albums. Ville Valo's goth romance is surely unique, but the band's musical backdrop rarely rises above slick and professional 80s arena metal. Nobody in the band except Valo makes an impression on the listener, and the performances are so polished and overproduced that no real advancement or growth can be detected in this collection, even though the tracks were recorded over a period of seven years and four studio albums. Bland riffs and uninspired rhythms are often unsuccessfully spruced up with annoying piano or keyboard squiggles, as in "Join Me in Death," "Heartache Every Moment," and "When Love and Death Embrace," and weak guitar solos almost always mimic the vocal melodies from the verses. Even worse, the band's awful ballads such as "Gone with the Sin" and "Close to the Flame" would induce the gag reflexes of even the most jaded hair metal swooners. This is all a shame because the band really can rock out when they feel like it, as in "Buried Alive by Love," "Right Here in My Arms," and their best-ever track "Your Sweet Six Six Six," indicating that the proper HIM albums should be explored for true love metal treasures. Granted, HIM are of interest due to the distinct outlook and intriguing personality of Ville Valo, but this collection does little to enhance the band's unimpressive chops. [~doomsdayer520~]

Full Metal Jacket CD.......2007-07-25
My husband wanted music that was popular while he was in Vietnam and asked me to order this. I have not listened to it, but he seems pleased.
BORING.......2006-02-15
I am yet to understand why this movie is compared to the likes of Platoon. There is no question which of the two is the better one. I was bored out of my mind after an hour. I turned it off and then when I had time to waste, I finished it. I am sorry I did. 2 Hours I will never get back. I know that evertone is different, but if you have not seen this movie and are thinking about viewing it, do so on a Sunday when you have NOTHING else to do. The only highlight was the Drill Instructor. He managed to crack a smile out me on occasion.
Only One Good Track.........2002-10-14
The first one... The rest of the CD is movie instrumentals that are excellent for falling asleep to, but that's about it.
Not for everyone.......2002-02-21
Abigail Mead, the composer of eight songs of this soundtrack, is actually Vivian Kubrick, daughter of Stanley Kubrick.
The disc has 15 tracks:
The first song is a hip-hop/techno mix of the cadences sung by Sgt Hartman in the first part of the movie, it is not a beautiful or good and I don't think it was necessary to include it.
The songs 2 to 7 are songs from the sixties and hear them during the movie creates a "mood" for the movie, for example, the song These Boots Are Made For Walking, by Nancy Sinatra and the scene in Vietnam which a prostitute is walking fits just perfectly and watch the movie without this song would have much less effect. Although they are not complex songs and most of the lyrics are foolish it's worth to have them in the score because they made a good part in the movie.
Song number 8 is the Marine's Hymn, a nice inclusion even thought it's not likely that someone would play this song very often at home.
The rest of the score are the instrumental themes composed by Abigail Mead, some of them are quiet and peaceful like Leonard, and others are more aggressive like Parris Island, with some nice stereo effects.
This is not the best score for a Stanley Kubrick movie and I suggest you to listen to it before you buy or you can have some bad surprises like not listening to Paint it Black, because it was not included or odd songs like Time Suspended. Actually I would suggest this soundtrack for Collectors, Kubrick fans or people with eclectic musical taste.
Boot Camp scenes are hauntingly realistic.......2000-08-04
The best part of this movie is the beginning, when they show what a raw recruit goes through at Boot Camp. It brings back a lot of memories because it was so well done. Lee Ermey just is exactly what a DI is at Paris Island. All the nuances, the lingo, the discipline. The acting is all first rate. Also, the combat portrayals in Hue City showed the type of frustration that vets faced in Vietnam. Snipers were nightmares to deal with. By the time you snuffed 'em out, you lost three or four men. The other movie that, in my opinion is the best war movie ever made, is Hamburger Hill. That movie showed what real grunt life was like in the bush.

I agree with cotton hell.......2005-09-29
suicide notes is definately a heavier sounding album. the curse may be good and all but alex sounds a lot better on suicide notes. i like the string quartet, because it reminds me of when metallica did thier old songs from ride the lightning and such and let the symphony be in the background. i think its flipping sweet.
a steaming pile of crap > Cotton's so called review.......2005-09-01
First off, I'm not a kid. I just don't want to sign up to put my opinion on here.
Cotton, wtf does a string quartet TRIBUTE album have to do with getting radio play? I'd seriously like to know. The Curse only did one thing for this band. It made them even better. The Curse is better than Suicide Notes mainly for 3 reasons...
1. The production is much better and...
2. Alex's screaming is also incredibly improved(seriously listen to some songs of of SN and then The Curse, and you tell me which sounds better)
3. Brandon's melodic vocals are used more often. I know a lot of you "hardcore" kids will disagree, but music that is nothing but constant screaming in your ear is annoying. I think Atreyu does a much better job of switching between the screams and singing.
Now, I'm not saying that Suicide Notes is bad. I just think that The Curse is an improvement. I also like how you say that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong. Well, I'm not going to say anyone who disagrees with me is wrong. They just have a different opinion. Anyway, I'm not really into instrumental albums that much....but I'll give it a 5 because of the band that is being revered.
True fans will adore this materpiece........2005-04-05
First off, don't read Cotton Hell's review. If you lust atreyu's music (or if you are just a music lover in general) you will enjoy this album. These are all songs that were originally written and composed by atreyu! Yes, this is a tribute album. It is also an instrumental album. Personally I don't care if you like it or not. I just couldn't stand seeing just one review by an obvious simple-minded individual. Give it a listen and decide for yourself. That's why amazon.com gives you the listening options!

LOVEMETAL at its best!.......2006-12-07
I love this album! I love the mixture of the old and the new stuff. HIM really has defined the genre Lovemetal, and this album is the perfect place to showcase it. Ville Valo's haunting lyrics of love and death coupled with his amazing voice really gives the songs feeling. With awesome guitar riffs, sounding bass, interesting keyboards, and vocals to die for, this CD is a must have. All the songs are amazing masterpieces, but here are a few I HIGHLY recommend: Right Here In My Arms, Heartache Every Moment, Pretending, and Join Me In Death.
Don't let the names scare you. Just listen to the words and escape into a world of LOVEMETAL!

Deep Purple was the first band to note that heavy metal and classical music share a certain deluded grandeur and attempted to combine the two. While what resulted--specifically, their Concerto for Group and Orchestra--was pretty fearful stuff, it did, for better or for worse, pave the way for a generation of classically influenced heavy-rock bands: King Crimson, Yes, and Queen, among others. The concerto on this live CD appears alongside a bunch of the Purple's more genteel songs they played at the Royal Albert Hall, a show that celebrated their 30th anniversary of their first appearance there. Ian Gillan, who can still do a creditable impression of a bomber revving for takeoff, shares vocals with Ronnie James Dio and Sam Brown. --Andrew Mueller
Album Description
Recorded live at two sold out shows at the Royal Albert Hall on September 25 and 26, 1999, which were benefits for the Nordoff-Robbins Trust. A must see.......2007-03-11
Even if you are not a Deep Purple fan this one is worth the investment. Whilst a little of the visual could be improved it's all there and the audio is of good quality. Butterfly Ball is a real hoot and if you don't enjoy that then you don't like music!
I reall contrast to the 1969 version of the Concertos where the conductor atually enjoys the whole experience.
Go for it!
I was VERY disappointed..........2003-08-12
The Amazon reviewer was right: the first several songs on CD 1 was very laid back, reminding me of Division-Bell-Era Pink Floyd. (Boring!) Didn't hear drums until the third or fourth track, then it was ANYTHING but rock beats. What made S & M so great is that Metallica didn't write BALLADS or NOVELTY SONGS for their production: they rocked on with what they had on hand. Deep Purple wrote some of the hardest rocking songs in the R&R/Heavy Metal library (Mandrake Root, Space Truckin, Child in Time), and so it's MHO that they should have employed them as orchestra pieces: overall, they should have rocked the whole time.
Of course, Steve Morse was an odd substitute for Richie Blackmore, but stalwarts Ian Gillian and Jon Lord was in good form that night. The record doesn't start consistently rocking until WRING THAT NECK at the end of CD 1. (Kind of thinking about it, I would have liked to wring the necks of those who made the decisions to program and preserve this somewhat idiotic concert...ha, just kidding.)
On CD 2, I thought the concerto was pretty well executed (esp. the first movement) and the last couple songs on the album (esp Ted the Mechanic and Smoke on the Water) were well orchestrated and played. I guess I would give this album 4 stars if they only released CD2 and lowered the price.
no it is not true, this band is great.......2002-09-26
the reviewers below dont know what would they say,......this cd is a remake of concerto for group orchestra what the band did in 1969. the place took in the royal albert hall london 1999. I saw the performance in germany 2000 with the george enescu orchestra.
The result is amazing,...buy the cd!
Go Back To MACHINEHEAD!.......2002-09-22
This is NOT Deep Purple nor was the experience I had listening to them in concert (Summer 2002) -Nashville. This is a watered- down version of one of the best bands to ever grace the planet.Dio is a great vocalist and "smoked" them live in Nashville. Steve Morse is a great guitarist but his bluesy rendition of the poweful rhythm guitar parts in Smoke On the Water were a joke! ... your instrumental that was a question mark for the new album was the best thing I heard that night!! ... Dio and the Scorpions were great!
a reviewer from canton massachusetts.......2001-10-29
not worth the money! just because your a fan of steve morse, dosn't mean that your also a fan of d p. here they jumped on the trendy band wagon like yngwie, kansas scorpion, etc.i paid twice the amount as the regular cd for stress fest xtra tracks only to here i xtra song, thatwasn't even written by steve.here,it's almost the same situation.the only true s m .song,is t i o a t p.how many times does he have to re-record this and play it exactly like in 1978.i wish that s m would go back to doing solo work.his music was as interessting as george lynch, satch, vai, etc.i gave this 2 stars because i like steve, but that dosn't necessarilly mean that i like orchestra music,or deep purple.

Customer Reviews:
Do not buy this cd from these people.......2007-03-21
Listen this cd is one of the best cd's of all time...NO LIE..but these guy's are ripping you off...It is people like them that make this country crap...It is sick
This CD slays........2006-01-20
I was fortunate enough to get into the Albany hardcore scene just as these guys were coming up. Albany and Troy had a ton of good bands and still do but I have never seen the kind of rabid devotion that Section 8 got from that scene. For a period of 4-5 years, these guys f.cking ruled the scene and no one could touch them. Everyone in Albany still talks about this band like they were f.cking gods. I put up a review of their CD on my website 7 years ago. To this day I still get e mails every week from people around the country asking where they can find Section 8's albums. I'm glad they're finally on Amazon. This is one of the darkest and most interesting metal bands you will ever hear. Buy this while you still can. For the full reviews on both their cds go to my site - http://www.geocities.com/fallenempire2000/trendy/section8.
If you like this band also check out disciples of berkowitz and ill remembered, two other bands the singer was in. Also check out Lore from Ballston Spa, NY, they sound a lot like this CD.
This band is incredible.
Sick Sh*t- A MUST own!.......2005-10-16
I dont write reviews..but I feel compelled to write about this Band, and this cd. Im a huge fan and have been fortunate enough to see this band perfom numerous times in the Upstate NY area. These were "hardcore" Gods! This cd will take you places you didnt know you were capable of going and you will enjoy every minute of it....and then you will start it over again. Seriously, to anyone that likes heavy, melodic, slow yet aggressive music, you will NOT be disappointed! Take your chance, I promise, you will enjoy it! (I just hope they get back together and show all these punk ass fake hardcore bands who the real badasses are again)

i cannot believe that section 8 cds are available on amazon. i was trying to get ahold of this and their first release, pain is truth, for so long and finally obtained them from distributors in the albany, ny area.
this cd, which is a step up from their first one, is hard to describe. someone said that to classify them into a single genre would be sacrelige. this album is a juxtaposition of hardcore and some form of death metal with traces of goth and black metal, all mixed together with originality and experimentation. kasey dorr has a truly suigeneris vocal style, which is slightly akin to that of life of agony.
this disk is a paragon for depressing music. not in a stoner doom metal type of way, but the way the music is orchestrated is a big part of it. most of the songs follow a similar pattern, which is they start of slow and mellow with glacial bass sections or mellow guitar and will catch you off guard with screaming fits of rage accompanying brutal rhythms. the sound works very well and fits the lyrics nicely.
dorr writes the most bleak and depressing lyrics i have ever read. the topics are of hopelessness, loss, the occult, and a plethora of other topics among that nature. an ominous atmosphere is painted through these lyrics and is strengthened by an amazing ensemble of musicians at the top of their game. they all went on to other bands, but section 8 is unparalleled in greatness, especially in upstate, ny, where they achieved god-like status. like most bands, however, this is an aquired taste probably. not your typical hardcore or metal band. section 8 is special.
