5 out of 5 stars Great second effort!.......2007-07-23

Switzerland is more than Krokus and Celtic Frost!!!
Gotthard has always been a favorite in Europe, and it is easy too see why. Pure, clean hard rock in the vain of early Def Leppard. Throw in a pinch of Bon Jovi and a morsel of AC/DC and you got Gotthard. Highly recommended for anyone with a taste of classic Hard Rock with a modern touch.

5 out of 5 stars BLUES + ROCK + CATCHY SONGS = BIG ALBUM.......2006-02-14

TOGETHER WITH "G", ONE OF THE BEST HARD ROCK/ BLUES ALBUMS OF THESE LAST YEARS. TO ME, IT'S EVEN BETTER THAN THEIR FIRST ALBUM. I DON'T KNOW WHICH IS THE BEST, "G" OR THIS ONE. I CAN ONLY SAY THAT THESE KIND OF 4/4 SONGS ARE THE SONG PEOPLE LIKE. THESE ARE THE SONGS PEOPLE LIKE LISTENING TO WHILE THE RIDE A MOTORCYCLE THROUGH THE ENDLESS DESERT OF ARIZONA OR NEVADA. THESE KIND OF SONGS GIVE ME THE POWER TO SCREAM MY HAPPINESS AND THE POWER THAT I FEEL INSIDE TO THE ENTIRE WORLD. THE FIRST TWO, THE FOURTH , BUT I WOULD SAY, ALL OF THEM, THEY ARE VERY POWERFUL SONGS, JUST LIKE A FIST IN YOUR STOMACH. THESE SONGS HAVE THE POWER OF HARD ROCK AND THE FEELING OF BLUES. IF YOU BUY THIS ALBUM AND YOU DON'T LIKE IT, I REFUND YOU (IT IS A JOKE, EHEHEHE). I CAN BET ANYTHING YOU WILL LIKE THIS HEAVY, TOUGH, HARD, POWERFUL, STRONG ALBUM.
AND, TO THE END OF THE ALBUM, THERE IS THE CLASSIC BALLAD THAT WILL MAKE YOU FINALLY REST. ONE VERY GOOD ALBUM, BECAUSE THEY MIXED THE POWER OF THE HARD ROCK & THE SOUND OF BLUES. WHAT ELSE I CAN SAY ? "I'M YOUR TRAVELIN MAN" IS ONE THE BEST SONG, I WOULD SAY. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE "G", BUY THIS, TOO. BECAUSE IT'S SIMILAR, BUT AT THE SAME TIME DIFFERENT. SONGS SPEAK BY THEMSELVES.

3 out of 5 stars Melodic and groovy.......2004-05-07

The second album from Gotthard is titled "DIAL HARD" (1994) and the band continue in the same direction as the first album but this time it's a bit more polished - still heavy metal though! While Gotthard did a cover of "Hush" the last time, they have now chosen Beatles' "Come together" and they managed to do a great version. The songs on "DIAL HARD" are mainly of high standard even if one could ask for more originality since the material melts together like it did on the debut album. But with songs like the groovy "Mountain mama", the bluesy "I'm your travelin' man", and the strutting "Dirty devil rock", Gotthard really shine from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Tim.......2001-08-10

I have been a Gotthard fan for awhile. Had one of their other CD's for about 3 years and listened to it quite a bit. Got this one in the "reduced" import section of one of the local record shops I visit. Killer all the way around. Great drum sound, excellent vocal performance, classic Gibson / Marshall guitar sound. Song arranging and guitar solos are also excellent. I play locally here in a hard rock trio and plan on using this CD as a platform for it's structure. The only downer is the 2 live tracks at the end of the CD. Poor sound compared to the rest of the CD. Steve does do a mean Robert Plant though. If you have heard of this band and are a fan, this is a "must have" from these guys.

5 out of 5 stars Gotthard at their best.......2000-06-19

This is probably Gotthard's heaviest album. The production is better than e.g. on "G" and makes the whole thing sound a little less raw than the previous albums. Don't get me wrong, I like the old stuff, too ("Hush" is a killer), but "Dial Hard" is even better. It also feature the obligatory cover version, this time it's "Come together". Favorite songs: "She goes down" - cool heavy guitar riff; "I'm on my way" - nice ballad; "Come together" - slightly harder than the original *grin*. There are no fillers on the album, every single song is worth your money.

4 out of 5 stars Give this album a chance.......2004-05-05

With "G" (1996), Gotthard show that they have developed musically. Even if their earlier albums have been good, this one is a lot better. It sure seems as Gotthard have put a decent amount of effort into the song writing and arrangements as well. "G" is an album for those who love great singing and melodic rock without a layer of cheese. Especially singer Steve Lee and guitar player Leo Leoni shine, and the rhythm section is really tight. The music business is not fair which Gotthard is a living proof of. This band hasn't made it big and it's a shame because I know that there are a lot od people out there who would love this melodic and skilful heavy metal/ hard rock band if they only knew about them. I highly recommend this solid and strong four star album (close to five stars) and if you chose to take a chance on this album, you will get groovy tunes like "Sister moon" & "make my day", speedy rockers by the name of "Moving on", "Hole in one", and "Ride on", heavy numbers such as "Fist in your face", a great cover of Dylan's "Mighty quinn", and of course a couple of slower ones in "One life, one soul" & "let it be".

3 out of 5 stars Domino Effect, Good, but not Great.......2007-07-25

First of all let me throw in my 2 PESOS to the comments below by CESAR a.k.a. The Mexican D.P. fan. Thanks for letting the Amazon world know your Mexican, that's very important in a review. I will have to give my next CD review as a American. By attacking Scott who gave a review below you must be a rock critic in Mexico? You claim to have 1500 CD's in your collection. Does that give you more knowledge of good from bad music and the right to degrade someone else's review? Please tell the world all the great music artists that came from your country besides MENUDO?

I happen to agree with Scott's comments and think Gotthard's last CD Lipservice was superior to this release. Although this is a competent release it just didn't grab me with any real gems. I always thought Gotthard excelled with their ballads(One team,One Spirit). But it's a free country(for me and Scott) so everyone has the right to an opinion. Do yourself a favor Ma-Chatch-O, go to heavyharmonies(dot)com and you can give your espanol advice to guys with 6000+ cd's in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars MONSTER release from a MONSTER band!!.......2007-07-21

So you say you haven't picked up on Gotthard yet? Guess what" You're losing out BIGTIME! These guys are by comparison a more 'rocked out' version of Bon Jovi,Journey. and if you like Aerosmith,Tesla,Def Leppard,Dokken,etc..then you NEED to get some cd's by these guys! Domino Effect is their latest masterpiece,and-tho a bit 'heavier' that their last one,Lipservice (also AWESOME!!),the band still has TONS of musical integrity in place here. And I hear this will get a US release later in '07. Watch fot it,if you don't like import prices. But be forwarned...you'll need to get some/all of their other cds as well! Also HIGHLY recommended: 'Lipservice', ''G', 'Open','Homerun',and 'Human Zoo'. Some great 'used' prices for some of 'em right here on Amazon. So don't wait any longer...discover one of the world's most AWESOME rock bands! Enjoy...T

5 out of 5 stars Best Gotthard release so far..........2007-07-10

Domino Effect is by far the best Gotthard release, Lipservice is superb, but this is way better, Human Zoo is just ok believe me, I've been into rock music for more than 20 years and more than 1500 rock cds, I think I can give a straight opinion, so trust me, now do yourself a favor if you're new to the band, pick this up ASAP! you won't be disappointed, a shame that a cd like this was screwed up by the previous review.

3 out of 5 stars It's still Gotthard,maybe 4 stars?.......2007-07-03

After being blown away by their last release (Lipservice),I was anxiously awaiting the follow up from Gotthard.Let me first say that this is not a bad cd,but it pales in comparison to Lipservice, but to be fair,so does pretty much everything else out there.Standout tracks on this one are:Master of Illusion,The Oscar goes to you,and the call. The songs aren't bad,but they have done better. If you are new to this band,do yourself a favor and pick up Lipservice,Open,or the Human Zoo prior to buying this. This cd is not a good representation of how good these guys are. After another listen after my initial review, maybe 3 stars isn't fair.It is a very good cd,but I still do not hold it as high as Lipservice,Open,or Human Zoo.Anything by these guys is worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended..'OPEN' your world to Gotthard!!.......2004-01-02

Gotthard is truely one of the world's best kept secrets. Their brand of 'late 70's era' rock contains superb songwriting that is played to perfection by these five guys from Switzerland. Frequently augmented by smartly textured keyboards and ultra-catchy singalong choruses, their songs harken back to early Foreigner/Journey(w/Perry)and other huge popular rock acts of the late 70's/early 80's-long before the biz got waaaay too commercial (e.g.:Hair Band era).Starting off with a couple rather 'heavy rock' releases, the band switched gears for their 3rd album ( titled simply 'G') and has since releasesd 3 more superb discs,of which 'Open' is the 4th.These guys put the word 'INFECTIOUS' back into rock & roll! After one listen to this disc, you won't be able to keep it from your player! Get this NOW-and while you're at it,check out their other great albums: 'G','Homerun',& 2003's 'Human Zoo'.

5 out of 5 stars Finest Melodic Rock Band From Switzerland Reveals.......2001-05-06

Wow...I heard so many talks that they are great because I live in Japan where they're very popular. Gotthard is a veteran melodic hard rock band from Switzerland.

My first impression is their sound is like Bon Jovi with Firehouse vocal. So if you like the titles I have reviewed so far you will definitely love this. Their excellent songwriting which can appeal to large publlic is part of their appeal rivaling Jim Peterik(ex Survivor),Jack Blades(Night Ranger),Neal Schon(Journey),Richie Sambora(Bon Jovi) and Ule W.Ritgen(Fair Warning).

Recommended tracks are so many but particularly I like Want You In and Blackberry Ways.

Recommended for wide variety of 80's rock fans and melodic hard rock fans.

4 out of 5 stars Got It Hard! (With second t upturned).......2005-11-21

Swiss hard rock veterans having peculiar spelling of upturned "t" as the band name has been unknown to the music fans outside Switzerland, Japan and some of German and Europeran metal fans community. Its debut album gained high appreciation from metal fans particularly of Europe and Japan. They already had a number of live concerts in Japan and most known to us by theme song for late Swiss K-1 champion Andy Hug.

Debut album in 1992 has full of really no-nonsense straight-ahead hard rock enough to hold the presence among the rock connoisseurs.

STANDING IN THE LIGHT is edgy yet catchy uptempo rocker somewhat close to that of BON JOVI. DOWNTOWN is pure Euro-metal probably influenced from German classic metal bands such as SCORPIONS. FIREDANCE is an excellently made mid-tempo emotional power ballad. HUSH is of course the cover of DEEP PURPLE classic and well cared for. MEAN STREET ROCKET and TAKE ME are feel-good uptempo rockers probably loved in live concerts. ANGEL and ALL I CARED FOR are excellent ballads showing they are well cut out for pop approach as some of the latest releases show.

Verdict: Well-refined for the debut. Struggling for shining out of the crowds.
Rating: 84 out of 100 Nice start for the debut.
Recommended for: Bon Jovi, Whitenake, and German metal fans.

3 out of 5 stars Good heavy metal.......2004-05-07

The debut album from Gotthard (1992) is a solid rock effort and it's more or less obvious that Gotthard are influenced by Whitesnake's "1987". The music is guitar riff based heavy metal with some blues and a lot of melody. Singer Steve Lee has a very good voice and the rest of the band is without doubt good musicians. It's too bad that Gotthard haven't got the attention they deserve because this band is just as good as any other band in this genre. If you like Tyketto, Hardline or Lionsheart you will probably like this album. The material is strong and songs like "Standing in the light", "Down town", "Firedance", and "Lonely heartache" should please any fan of traditional but melodic heavy metal. My only objection (which lower the ranking from a 4 to a 3) is that the songs are rather similar to one another and in the long run they have a slight tendency to melt together.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......2000-02-24

Do you love Dio' s The last line and Holy diver, Whitsnake? Then buy this cd. The songs are all great clasic hard-rock pieces and the singer has great voice. Is that enough?

5 out of 5 stars terrific classic hard-rocj band with great singer.......2000-02-24

This is the first album of the swiss hard rock band called Gotthard. If you love Deep Purple, Whitesnake and Dio YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS CD. ALL (I say: all) songs are excellent: The sound is hard and the singer is probably the best hard-rock singer with Ronnie Dio. As a guest VIVIAN CAMPBELL plays a great solo on the song "Firedance". Don't miss it. Believe me, you won't regret it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2005-02-06

This band is simply amazing. And this is coming from someone who doesn't really listen to hard rock all too much (I'm a metal kid). Maybe it's because there aren't enough bands like Gotthard who know how to play more than a few chords and really know where they're going with their songs. Anyways, I love this CD!

I first heard of this band through a CD called Metal Dreams Vol. 2, through a catchy little blues-tinged number called "Let It Rain". The song was very well-composed, and the band just had an excellent sound. I decided I wanted to hear more. So I ordered Human Zoo, their acclaimed 2003 effort. I had my doubts, after all, I wasn't too fond with this genre. But when the title track kicked in, I decided I liked it - it reminded me a bit of heavier Bon Jovi with a younger Rod Stewart on vocals. "What I Like", the album's powerful single just caught my attention right when it first kicked in. It's such a beautiful song, thanks in part to Steve Lee's excellent voice, and had a very anthemic feel to it - similar to the great hard rock of the 70s and early 80s. "Top of the World" made me realize just how much I was truly enjoying myself when listening to this CD - it's just a great, upbeat rocker with an infectious chorus and great guitar playing. "Janie's Not Alone" is one of the more depressing tracks, mainly for its lyrical content, involving a girl from a poor background who lives on the streets and steals to stay alive. "One in a Million" is more of a driving tune - easily accessible, fun to sing along too and catchy as hell. Then comes a beautiful bluesy ballad called "First Time in a Long Time", an uplifting, inspirational song that is hard not to love. Everything to come next is also very good - and "Long Way Down" offers something a bit different for a change, adding some nice variety.

Let me say this, if you're a fan of rock (real rock, not alternative radio crap) or classic metal, why not take a chance and see if this wonderful band can leave an impression on you as it has on me? Definitely a must.

You'll also want to get 'Homerun', 'Open' & 'G'. Trust me,you'll LOVE these guys. I've heard aLOTTA music in my 48 years, and these guys have what it takes--Enjoy..

4 out of 5 stars fine, mature rock album from a little known European band.......2003-09-15

Prior to its release "Human Zoo" had sparked off a lively debate. This new CD from Swiss band Gotthard has already come in for some flak, with criticism of the songs ranging from "too soft" through to "too boring" and the band themselves have been slated for their overtly commercial direction. I tend to see things differently. In the years since their formation, Gotthard have continuously evolved and refined their sound. With their last album "Homerun" they delivered a timeless classic. Sure, the band have lost something of the harder edge of their early releases, but have just as surely gained in class. On top of this, Gotthard are just about the only band in Europe from the melodic scene to have made a breakthrough in the last few years. Which is why I find the brickbats totally incomprehensible. Gotthard are putting our music back in front of a wider public. What more could you ask for ??

Now to the new output "Human Zoo", the first album without long time producer Chris von Rohr. Instead Gotthard have brought in the highly regarded Marc Tanner, producer of the MTV-Award winners The Calling. With Tanner at the helm the production here is first class. Several of the songs have that harder edged style of yore but for the most part the songs are similar in style to the last album "Homerun". The majority of tracks on the new album are either ballads or mid-tempo numbers. In terms of quality, the songs are continuously on a high level. All the same there are a number of highlights that I have picked out :

"Human Zoo"
Title track "Human Zoo" is a really heavy opener, which reminds me of early Gotthard. After the first two spins the track was not really one of my favourites, but after repeated plays it is getting better and better and...................................

"What I Like"
A personal favourite and one of the best songs of the new album. Here everything gels. Well played guitars, tinged in places with some slight Asiatic influences. Steve Lee is in top form. A track that leaves you wanting more. "What I Like" is also the first Gotthard single from "Human Zoo".

"Janie's Not Alone"
A song that deals with the desperately sad lives of street kids in places like Romania and Brazil. It tells the story of twelve year old Janie. With its sensitive and thought provoking lyrics and a splendid musical accompaniment from the band, this is a track that gets under your skin.

"No Tomorrow"
The intro to "No Tomorrow" is very calm and just as you are thinking, another ballad, the guitars kick in, driving the song to a memorable chorus. Melodic rock to perfection.

"What Can I Do"
A typical Gotthard ballad. This track comes to life through the sensitive voice of singer Steve Lee and the wonderful background vocals. Just close your eyes, enjoy and dream.

With "Long Way Down" the album touches a low point as the track is merely average and just about prevents me from giving Gotthard and "Human Zoo" the full five stars. Despite this I'm already eagerly looking forward to the forthcoming Gotthard tour. See you there!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fine Arena Rock.......2003-07-24

Swiss melodic rock superstar Gotthard (with second t upturned) made another great work that will surely expand their fans currently limited to Europe and Japan. The album is extension of pop hard approach as shown in Open, and Homerun. The remarkable change is that producer was changed to Marc Tanner known by Calling's debut. The album became more tailored to American AOR fans that like catchy power ballads. The album sounds as if Ron Nevison did Bon Jovi albums. Mark Tanner's approach is very closer to Ron Nevison who produced a number of comeback hit albums such as Survivor's Vital Signs and Heart's self titled album in 1984.

Opening track Human Zoo is a killer. Hard-edged yet pop sound will pale Bon Jovi or Goo Goo Dolls. What I Like is a sure hit power ballad fit for Adult Rock chart. Have a Little Faith is a nice slow ballad challenging "The Search Is Over" or "High Enough". Top Of The World is heavy edged catchy song a bit reminiscent of "Living On A Prayer". One In A Million starts with "Stone In Love" styled heavy guitar riff. Another highlight of the album is "First Time In A Long Time" Rod Steward styled ballad sure to be a huge hit.

Recommended for wide range of pop rock fans that like Ron Nevison related works and 80s pop rock fans. Also recommended for Goo Goo Dolls, Bon Jovi and Calling fans.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Rock is NOT dead!.......2003-04-02

I became familiar with this band, while living in the USA, through my boyfriend who happened to live in Austria. Being a rock fan, I gave it a try on the great recommendation he gave them! I was sooooooooooooo impressed, I begged for more! 2years later, we were married,I moved to Austria and saw them in concert every chance I got! They are definately one of the most professional rock bands in Europe.........great sound, great songs, great presence!!!!!!!!! I have every cd and couldn't wait until the new one came out! I bought it on release day and loved it!They have gone back to their roots and delivered a rock album worthy of praise. Rockers, ballads and party songs worthy of stadium crowds!! Gotthard aims to please and has hit the bullseye with their latest release HUMAN ZOO!
Those of you interested in hearing earlier stuff,I suggest the following:
1. DIAL HARD
2. G Spot
3.D Frosted(Acoustic live album)
4.Gotthard
5.Open
6.Homerun
7.Best Of Ballads

With Gotthard you can't go wrong.Definately worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING, MUST HAVE!.......2006-01-04

this is one AMAZING piece of art! this is music at its best. I heard the first few notes and knew I would not be complete unless I owned this CD!
the music here reaches deeper. it is a compilation of heartfelt ballads that cut to the bone. it also includes a nice cover version of the Stone's "ruby tuesday" which I really enjoy.
if you like good ballads, this one's for you! moreover, if you simply like good music, this one's for you! if you don't like this CD, then obviously you don't like good music!
it's a keeper, worth every penny!

Whether you are new to this band or you are already a fan, this is a great offering from Gotthard. It has a great mix of Rocker's and ballads so there is plenty here to satisfy fans of both genres. If you are new to these guys,do yourself a favor and pick up their other cd's as well. They are a bit pricey at times, but at least Gotthard will give you your money's worth, unlike some of the other better known acts out there.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT EUROPEAN HARD ROCK.......2006-02-04

this is the european answear to Ac-Dc. Played in the Main Square of Luzern, Switzerland (German Side) during a Cinema Festival, that was a very hard rock big night! For This, they toured, a few years later, with Ac/Dc. I am sure that all Ac / Dc fan (I am a big one) will like this product, also because this night is one of the tour that was promoting the "G" album, the best they ever made. The second "Dial Hard" & "G" are the best albums they made, and this concert has hits from both albums. Even if I don't suggest live albums for knowing a band, I really do this this time. If you don't know them yet, and you like blues & hard rock, please buy it. I saw them live in '96 in Switzerland, for the "G" album. Amazing!
The album has 15 songs on it, and the second one was not previously recorded on any album before. The concert starts with the singer speaking in german, french, english & italian. I really not hope to make you listen to you the first song while you re driving downtown, because it will make you want to start driving at more than 100 km/h. There are also some rock blues ballads (the last song "I am On My way") will make you imagine being in a endless road in the middle of the desert, with your harley (if you come from USA) or Moto Guzzi (if you are italian). "Angel" will make you cry, and will also make your girlfriend cry. "Mountain Mama", "Hush", Out on my Own" will make you play any kind of instruments (guitars or drums), and "Let It be" is not the BEATLES song, it is just another ordinary VERY GOOD song of this very good album. I say that if you some money to spend in a very good hard rock/blues album , think about this record! I'll wait on opinions about this record

5 out of 5 stars This is the ONE for you........2002-06-07

I am not a hard rock fan by all means. A Swiss friend of mine gave me this for my birthday and SURE,they can rock the world!
Sister Moon & Sweet little rock'n'Roll are the best of the best.

I love it!

5 out of 5 stars terrific singer.......2000-02-24

This swiss hard-rock band has the greatest hard-rock singer after Ronnie James Dio. Great, great, great voice. And also the rest of the band really rocks. This is a live album which presents very beatiful songs in "unplugged" versions. Believe me: if won't believe your ears. The band is well known in Switzerland, Germany and Japan, but very little known in the States
