In the Wake of the Extraordinary Success Story that was Thin Lizzy, Mr. Rock N' Roll Himself, Phillip Paris Lynott, Formed Grand Slam. Featuring Magnum Keyboard Player Mark Stanway, Ex-stampede Axe Man Laurence Archer, Guitarist Dougie Nagle and Drummer Robbie Brennan Alongside the Man on Bass, Grand Slam was a Formidable Rock Band that Never Fully Realised Its Potential. Live, However, They Rocked Big Time. This Release is Culled from their Very Last Live Performances, Predominantly London's Marquee Club on December Fourth 1984. The Sadness of all of this is That, Almost Exactly Two Years Later, the Great Man was Gone. This Limited Edition Two CD Digi-pack Includes a Second Three Track CD Includes Alternative Live Versions of "Nineteen", "Crime Rate" and "Military Man".

The music on this release is good quality blues rock. Despite the keyboards, which insure that this is not a Thin Lizzy retread, great lead guitar solos remain and the fast, heavy and hard Nineteen and Dedication smoke. Parisienne Walkways is an awesome slower heavy blues rock number with Gary Moore's coauthorship obvious, even though he's not playing (and still great guitarwork).

Unfortunately, the sound quality is not great on this CD. Some songs are more muffled than others. The song Cold Sweat is a favorite of mine but it sounds like the mikes are wrapped in a blanket. Luckily that's probably the worst recorded number.

I AM curious why Dedication, on the second album, just fades out after 5 minutes plus. Maybe they blew the ending. Still, I'd have loved to hear it complete. There are only 18 minutes of music on the 2nd disc, so there was plenty of time...

I personally am glad to have this CD (I'd give it 3 1/2 stars if that was an option), but if you don't really love Lynott you might want to skip it. If you already have half a dozen Thin Lizzy albums you might be ready to give this a try- and if you like heavier rock more than blues you'll especially want to get Lizzy's live albums first.
