5 out of 5 stars Got to be one of the most underrated album of the 90s...........2006-07-03

I have to admit that I had kind of forgotten about this band. A couple years ago a house fire destroyed alot of my CD's. Luckily I found this disc in a used CD store a week ago and instantly remembered what an amazing album this is, from a band that most people have never heard of. Its beyond me how these guys kind of slipped under the radar, but they did.

This album is solid, start to finish.. The sound (to me) is alot like STP... grungy guitars and voclas, but catchy melodies... an excellent effort start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Rotting Pinata - Sponge.......2006-03-20

My bro sold my Rotting Pinata CD years ago. Once I replayed this one, all of the songs came back to me and it was like I never lost it. Each song is great, can't think of a bad moment on this.

1 out of 5 stars I just found out yesterday that "Plow" wasn't by Mike Ness of Social Distortion.......2006-02-03

When someone buys a full-length album, and grumbles about how it only has one good song on it, this disc is the kind of album they're talking about.
Sponge is a fitting name for this band; they absorb and concentrate all their good music into one song. And I swear to God, I actually thought "Plowed" was a Social Distortion song until I saw the music video on VH-1 (literally) yesterday for it. No wonder I couldn't figure out why Mike Ness was singing over a power pop ballad. It was an impersonator.

I give this album half a star for one good song. It would've gotten a full five stars had "Plow" actually been from Social D on an album surrounded by equally-good Social D songs.

5 out of 5 stars I keep coming back .......2005-12-24

The one true test that judges a great CD is the ability to keep drawing me back to it even though I have not heard it in along time. Its something that clicks and makes you think of a riff or feeling that makes you want to hear something and you suddenly realize that its not just one song on the CD but the whole collection of the songs that you just have to hear again. And this is one CD that I have bought more than once because even though I have lost or loaned this one out and didn't get it back for some reason I'll hear this damn thing in my head and have to go get it again. This makes the third time! Maybe I should just keep better track of my music, but I'm glad this is one CD that I can't seem to forget.

This is a band that actually tried to change things.Biafra ran for mayor, Cops came to their shows beacause of the smart lyrics the cops had to be on guard . No other punk band will ever compare. They just simply spoke their minds and didnt care.JELLO HAS THE SMARTEST LYRICS.aND THE CRAZY THING IS THEY CAME TRUE SOME OF HIS LYRICS HAVE COME TRUE.hE PREDICTED THE FUTURE.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, inventive and extremely important.......the debut from DK about 4 1/2 stars.......2006-07-29

DK burst on the scene in the late 70's with an innovative and extremely funny sound. Blending elements of punk, hardcore and rockabilly with lyrical content based souly on political awareness the Dead Kennedys were leading the charge on the movement of getting the word out. Lead by master lyricist Jello Biafra (who was a man on a mission), surf rock guitarist East Bay Ray, bass player extraordinaire Klaus Flouride and Ted on drums. The Dead Kennedys were embarking on a dangerous and untraveled road against all odds. This reissue of their debut is a perfect starting point for all those revolutionaries out there who truly want to listen to something important. Many great songs here. There are a few fillers on the album but those tracks don't take away from the intensity of 'Fresh Fruit'. As a bonus with this reissue you get a 55 minute documentary dvd which offers insight into the beginnings of DK. Early performances of the band which are out of this world, interviews and Jello's short run for Mayor of San Francisco. Incredible to say the least.

If you're going to own one DK's record, this is it. It's all here in raw, uncut form--Jello Biafra's sneering vocals, the satire that poked like a stick in the eye, and the instrumental blitz that joined East Bay Ray's surf guitar with slaughterhouse rhythm. Soon after this debut, Biafra would fall into Lenny Bruce's trap of parading his legal hassles instead of making art. On Fresh Fruit, though, he throws firebomb after firebomb, hitting every chosen target with "I Kill Children," "Holiday in Cambodia," "California Uber Alles," and "Let's Lynch the Landlord." Dated? A little, sure, but it remains a landmark of lefty politics and violent music. --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Dead Kennedys' Baptisim of Satire.......2007-01-16

The first full length album from Dead Kennedys is still foremost on the list of classic punk rock albums. Describing the band a leftover Vietnam War protest band, Jello B. and the Dks became the liberal conscience of the early punk underground scene. Picking up where the Sex Pistols' fell apart in San Francisco, California, Dead Kennedys continued the back-to-basics/music-as-message aesthetic of their British predecessors.

Jello's lyrics flip-flop from humorous to in-your-face in true satirical manner challenging the listener to divine whether he's a sick agitator or a wry social commentator. I've come to the conclusion that the songs are straw-man set ups delivered from the point of view to satiree; hopefully, I've been right all these years and the man isn't totally nuts.

Taking on subjects from hypocrisy of authority and waste of the unexamined life, "Fresh Fruit..." is as confrontational as it is fun to listen to, while as being just as relevant as when it was originally released. There's everything from the politics of County Joe to the energy of Joey Ramone here.

Unfortunately, current disagreements between the former band members find this album, along with the rest of the Dead Kennedys catalogue, in a control tug-of-war based more on financial disagreements than on ideological ones, which is in stark contrast to the spirit that the album was created in. If you can find an older copy on Alternative Tentacles Records, grab it because it'll be a long, long time before this material will be pressed again under the banner of the bat logo.

5 out of 5 stars this cd rocks.......2007-01-07

this is definently one of the best punk albums of the 80's, along with circle jerks' group sex and adolescent's blue album. unfortunatly, like the other two bands, their latter efforts just didn't have what the debuts did. having said that, fresh fruit is a must-have for any punk collection. every song is great, from classics such as california uber alles, holiday in cambodia, and kill the poor to other great tracks such as when ya get drafted, let's lynch the landlord, chemical warfare, and funland at the beach, this album rocks from start to finish. get it today.

5 out of 5 stars Classic old school punk.......2006-11-07

This is classic old school punk rock. It's amazing how if you change a few names of the politicians and events that were written 26 years ago it even fits with current events ;) If you are young and haven't heard this give it a look it will blow you away.

5 out of 5 stars First taste of DK.......2006-09-01

This is the first CD i bought by the DK. Can't say I know anything else about thier music but this CD is awesome. Lots of high speed intensity thrash. Awesome guitar riffs like in "When ya get drafted". Guess i got lucky choosing thier earliest stuff. So much different than any other punk at the time. It's an experience, a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Best Punk Record Ever?.......2006-07-07

Yes, despite my undying love for The Clash, this may be the best punk record ever. "Fresh Fruit..." is the only album I ever put in my CD player and actually felt blown away by it. Short, fast, witty, snarling British-style punk from California came blaring out of my speakers and I loved every minute of it. The music was tightly wound, the lyrics were fresh and intelligent and Jello's warbling voice (though a little disarming at first) became my favorite part of the whole package.

I've listened to this CD what must be dozens of times and it still blows me away. So now I'm divided, is "The Clash" better or "Fresh Fruit..."? In conclusion, this is one of the best punk albums ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the beautiful underworld.......2007-04-24

With a name like Rotting Christ I had generally supposed that this band do little more than black metal noise. I have consequently just taken a big slap in the face by some of the best crafted, atmospheric and tuneful metal I've heard in a longtime. From the demonic (yet very listenable) vocals, the technical, busy and melodic guitars, to the delicate neo classical orchestration and choir work (including arabic sounding warbling and ancient Greek chanting), we have all the right ingredients to travel to another place and to a distant era. Beautiful, chilling, dark music to conjur up images of being chased around monastries by evil monks with only Sean Connery and and a handful of candles to save you. Needless to say, the Rotting Christ back catalogue is currently having a good seeing to by someone who has shamefully overlooked them and their monstrous talent for the last fifteen years.

5 out of 5 stars The sleeping giant of 2007.......2007-04-18

Rotting Christ's "Theogonia" is definitely a contender for the best metal album of 2007 and who would have thought it? I have known about Rotting Christ for about ten years however I have been a casual listener. The last Christ album I bought was "A Dead Poem" which was about 10 years ago. I also own "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers" and although I enjoyed both albums they didn't strike me extremely hard. At least not hard enough to buy more of their records, I was then browsing Metal Hammer magazine and I saw that Rotting Christ had a new album coming out. Excuse my ignorance but I didn't even realize the band was still together. I mean lets face it, finding an album of theirs in a main chain record store is not an easy feat. Well the article caught my interest and I thought what the heck I'll check out their new album to see what the sound like ten years after "A Dead Poem". Well to make a long story short I had to special order "Theogonia" I guess the name Rotting Christ scares a lot of record store salesmen away.

From the first 60 seconds of the first track I was blown away. This was melodic black metal in it's grandest form. What is even more amazing is each track after the first seemed to get better and better. Actually to be completely honest after listening to this album numerous times I can not name any highlight tracks because they are all that good. The whole record is one complete epic metal journey. Any band that is thinking about recording an epic album needs to listen to "Theogonia" first to see how a true epic metal record should be done. Rotting Christ completely caught me off guard with this release. I knew I would probably like this album but I had no idea I would enjoy it this much. The musicianship on this record is top notch. I would recommend to any one who enjoys black metal, epic metal, or just plain heavy metal in general to pick up "Theogonia" In my opinion it has the capability of being the metal release of the year although it will not get the recognition it deserves because of the band's name. I do know one thing I now have a lot of back catalogue I have to purchase and catch up on from these Greek gods of metal.

5 out of 5 stars "Where joy and lust dispel in air".......2007-02-23

This is quite possibly the greatest Rotting Christ album to date. With a production value that exceeds their previous release, "Sanctus Diavolos" (I know! That album sounded great!), and a significantly added crunch to the lead guitars this band is clearly at the peak of their powers. Not only are there blastbeats aplenty mingled with their signature twin-guitar assault, but there is also an added sense of groove and layered ambience. The most surprising aspect, besides the incredible production, is the fact that included into the gothic mood and Black Metal attack is a feeling of clear enjoyment in the songwriting. The energy level brought to this release is superb and infectious, the creativity within the songcraft indelible to the end. This is a two-disc set. The first disc contains the actual album with a video clip of "Keravnos Kivernitos" and four different wallpapers of various sizes. The second disc is a DVD containing different songs selected from their back catalog, and although the sound for each is muffled and the visual aspect not all that impressive, it is worth seeing just to see how rabidly devout their fans are abroad. Fans should not hesitate to purchase this album as soon as possible; as for newcomers this is THE place to start collecting. The total running time is (42:47) but the songs are so detailed with epic production value and furious riffing that it actually plays longer than it seems it should.

4 out of 5 stars Entrancing Effort.......2007-02-13

I've been waiting for a new Rotting Christ for a long time and I'm glad to say that this album will be another fine addition to everyone's Rotting Christ library. The best way to describe this album is a cross between the speed and attitude of "Khronos" and "Sanctus Diavolos" with the melodic riffs from albums like "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers" or "Sleep of the Angels". Throw that in with horns and female vocals that sound like ancient Greek music and you have "Theogonia". With some of these songs like "Nemecic", it almost sounds like Sakis took elements from the "Troy" or "Alexander" movie scores and combined them with the familiar Rotting Christ elements. The end result is interesting and makes the album stand out from the rest of the records. Sakis' lyrics on this album are even MORE abstract than before which makes it hard to follow the storyline, but in the end that doesn't matter. Bottom line: if you like Rotting Christ you will definitly enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars By Far Their Best Effort.......2007-02-12

Three years prior I stumbled upon Sanctus Diavolos at a local music store and bought it on impulse, never before hearing of Rotting Christ. I have mixed feelings about that album due to it's highly repetitive nature. It did, however, have some excellent standout tracks which were good enough to keep me interested. Then comes Theogonia.

I am floored. Every track presented here is standout and not a single negative comes to mind. Gone from Theogonia is the repetitve riffing, chorus, and drawn out sound effects that bogged down Sanctus Diavolos instead replaced by original, creative, and fresh works that should cement Rotting Christ's place in the metal world indefinitely. I am now the proud owner of every Rotting Christ album from Thy Mighty Contract on up and in my opinion this is the pinnacle of their work- their darkest, heaviest, hardest hitting effort to date. I predict that 2007 will be the year of Rotting Christ and hopefully they attract the recognition they so deserve for this accomplished album.

If you own any Rotting Christ and enjoyed them IN THE SLIGHTEST you owe it to yourself to give Theogonia a listen. They have far exceeded my expectations with this excellent release as I'm sure they will yours.

My favorite tracks are:
Xaoeteneto (The Sign of Prime Creation)
Enuma Elish
Gaia Tellus
Nemecic
He, The Aethyr

5 out of 5 stars This is classic punk rock!.......2007-01-05

The Dead Kennedys are unbeatable. Nobody can do it better than them. Nobody can duplicate their work either. Fresh Fruit is possibly their best album. The best songs are, "Kill The Poor"(This song just all around rules) "Stealing people's mail"(This one is underrated but classic) "Let's Lynch the landlord"(I like it alot) "california Uber alles"(Not my favorite, but good lyrics.) and "Holiday in Cambodia"(A little overrated, but still good). If you are a real punk and not one of those fake Green Day posuers, get this punk rock collector's item!

5 out of 5 stars nothing better.......2006-12-13

This album changed my outlook on the world, and reminds me every time I listen to it that questioning what you're told is never wrong. Unfortunately, Jello's bandmates have decided to talk trash about him, calling him a terrorist due to his views despite the fact that the Dead Kennedys would never have existed or been noticed if it weren't for his provacative lyrics. Buy this album and find out what punk rock is really about.

5 out of 5 stars A Punk Masterpiece That Simply Can't Be Imitated, Let Alone Duplicated.......2006-11-03

When this album was first released it got massive airplay on Los Angeles (Pasadena) radio station KROQ - and the world was never quite the same again. California Uber Alles, Holiday In Cambodia, and Viva Las Vegas filled the airwaves, making mincemeat of AOR (Album Oriented Rock) radio stations. I studied the poster, gleaning the words to the songs, committing them to memory, and wondering when and where I could see this band!

The songs are incredibly fast, the lyrics show intelligence and political insight, and over a quarter century later still hold up well. Other bands were at the forefront of punk before the DKs, but none did it better. Listen to today's punk, then listen to this. Nothing comes close and nothing packs the whallop of these tunes. It's socially acceptable to be 50 and have a gray ponytail. The hippies of the 60's and 70's turned out to be the same greedy execs that they rallied against. But 50 year old punks are still cool and are NOT sellouts.

I love turning people on to this CD. The looks on their face are either Love It or Hate It. I don't care what age you are, music is supposed to move you, one way or the other. Most of today's music can't, even the indie stuff and all the self produced stuff. But this, my friends, is the elixir of angry punk music at it's finest. Try it - you'll LOVE it. Woooooooooo-Hoooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is THE greatest punk rock album - ever........2006-03-06

These guys were truly a great band. It's too bad that the rest of the band hates Jello now. I probably would go see them in concert. It would be SO AWESOME to hear California Uber Alles and Chemical Warfare live. Jello has such a weird voice, and it really adds to the effect of this strangely, yet well put together rock masterpiece. The lyrics are incredibly intelligent, and thought provoking. This album perfectly fits the political situation of it's time. I swear, this IS the best punk rock CD ever recorded. Definately reccomended.

Album Description

1993 reissue on Alternative Tentacles of the hardcore punker's 1980 debut for the label. Hailing from San Francisco & led by Jello Biafra, the album features 14 tracks, including their amusing remake of 'Viva Las Vegas', plus 'Kill The Poor', 'Holiday In Cambodia', 'Let's Lynch The Landlord' and 'California Uber Alles'. The full title is'Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables'.

5 out of 5 stars You can get lost in between each haunting note........2007-05-09

I have to give this album 5 stars because in my opinion this is the best Rotting Christ album(with Theogonia in 2nd and Non Serviam in a close 3rd) and one of the most influential pieces of music to me. This album is seriously one that you can get lost in. Sakis layers the guitars in a hypnotic density. This album never gets as fast as some of the earlier or more current Rotting Christ. It seems that the album dwells around mid-tempo. It's kind of a mix between a doom metal and black metal vibe. The lyrics on this album are very abstract, but they add to the mysterious tone that Sakis and company create. Some of the best Rotting Christ songs are here; "Snowing Still" is a dreary December eulogy of music. "The Opposite Bank" is a melodic doom metal opus that harkens back to Non Servium. "King of a Stellar War" opens the album with a call to arms that almost sounds like progressive avant-garde metal. But my absolute favorite Rotting Christ song of all time is "The First Field of The Battle". The main riff on this song is enough to envision the story that Sakis is trying to tell. IF you go into this album expecting to mosh to it in your parent's basement then you will be dissapointed. But this album is definitly perfect during a bleak, snowy and dismal gray winter day. . .

5 out of 5 stars Rotting Christ-Kings of Greek BM.......2004-05-08

Triarchy is one of my favorite albums by Rotting Christ. Sakis, their singer, delivers Deathishlike vocals. Unlike the previousreviewer, I can understand everything he saying. No problemswhatsoever. The one thing about this release and other albums by RC, are the catchy rhythym, greatmind blowing quitar riffs, and awesome keyboards. If you're intomelodic Black/Death metal, this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars "The echoes in the other world".......2004-04-21

4.5 stars. Melodic Death style and tremendous guitar riffage abounds on this very solid recording. The weakest part of the band, and this is up for opinionated debate, are the vocals. I can't understand anything this guy is saying, but after referring to the lyrics(which are good, by the way), some of the words are starting to come through. But the undeniable strength of this band is the lead guitar work, which is melodic and catchy, and provokes heartfelt playing of air-guitar. The bass guitar is not memorable, but is a sustaining factor noentheless. While the drumming here continues to impress me the more times I hear the album. I will be seeking out more albums from this band in the near future, so I would recommend starting with this album as a first purchase. It has inspired me to look for more, and I'm sure it will inspire others. Take it easy.

5 out of 5 stars arguably their best..........2003-05-22

this album imo is tied with "a dead poem" for best rotting christ album. triarchy is a lot more catchy though, and you're instantly hooked by the hallucinating riffing and crushed by the cold atmosphere of the album. the music flirts with elements of doom and black metal to create an impeccable fusion of perfectly tuned darkness. i think that only 2 or 3 songs are average while the rest is monumental in its entirety, especially the mighty "Archon" with its traumatizing rythm section and bass. tracks 1, 2, 5, 6 and 8 are just as efficient. what the hell, just buy this and you'll surely die smarter.

3 out of 5 stars heavy stuff.......2003-01-17

this effort lacks the intense energy of Khronos and genesis but holds its own nonetheless. This album broods and is more restrained than the bands latest work. This album makes a nice warmdown from the energy of genesis. The vocals growl out and you can sense the intensity simmering below the surface but it never really comes thru. Thus, triarchy leaves you waiting for a climax of sorts, some form of release that never really happens. still, a worthy addition to ones rotting christ collection.

5 out of 5 stars My Personal Favorite RC Album!.......2004-12-08

I own alot of their CDs and Khronos is my personal favorite. Khronos is the album in between Sleep with the Angels and Genesis. It basically sounds like both of those albums put together but Khronos is still more brutal than Genesis. A great thing about this CD is the Gothic Metal sound that dominated some of the previous releases has been blended perfectly with the harder Black Metal rage of their earlier releases. The tempo is faster, brutal and the lyrics are written better than Genesis. R.C. really peaked on this album. Sakis is one of my favorite vocalists in Extreme Metal. Sakis sounds as evil as ever! The guitar riffs are always melodic and catchy. The timing changes and drum work along with the raspy vocals of Sakis is mesmerizing. R.C. write some of the best extreme music because of their ability to make album after album with variation. The albums and songs all sound different. They create this dark atmosphere like no other. The Gothic Metal influence is still present on this album and what a beautiful album Rotting Christ has created.

5 out of 5 stars "I'll be the fire that keeps you warm".......2004-05-05

I was thoroughly convinced that the heaviest days of Rotting Christ were long gone. But, much like the rebirth of Testament with their album "Demonic," Rotting Christ has reached back and re-established their brutal Metal attack. This time, however, the production is more polished. The music here has all the gothic ambience they have shown from more recent albums mixed with even more excellent guitar work and a much more agressive rhythm section carving a swath of diabolical attitude. Up until the release of "Khronos 666," my favorite Rotting Christ album was "Thy Mighty Contract" with its astonishingly evil texture and audio presence. Listening to that album in the dark makes me feel like some stygian Thing with black, leathery wings is watching me with malevolent intentions. I still prefer "Thy Mighty Contract" over any of the Rotting Christ albums I own, but "Khronos 666" is right on the heels of that seminal Black Metal masterpiece. Another factor that leads me to believe that this album is undeniably excellent is that with each spin of the CD I am discovering more and more detail. The drumming, in particular, is more impressive each time I encounter this darkly alluring music. This is certainly "a welcome reverse shift in direction." May this darkness embrace you.

5 out of 5 stars Great agressive shocker.......2004-01-30

I was initially a little shocked when I first got this album. However, it has possibly grown on me more than any of their other albums, and it is the one I always go back to first.

I loved their previous effort (Sleep of the Angels), and liked the progression from Dead Poem. I guess I was expecting a continuance of that direction, and was taken off guard. I got over that quickly.

Though this album has a few weak tracks, it is possibly more diverse than the average Rotting Christ album. The best songs make up for any minor shortcomings: Aeternatus, Khronos, Thou Art Blind, Art of Sin, etc. Aeternatus and Khronos are probably my two favorites, yet probably the most opposite on the album. There is also a great cover of Current 93's: Lucifer Over London.

4 out of 5 stars The Art Of Khronos.......2003-12-12

Rotting Christ are an amazing band. For those of you who are not familiar with this band, don't dismiss it as a band trying to sell and make news with their controversial name. Their name does not do this band justice. Maybe it's what they were trying to do when they first started, but that was 16 years ago, they have matured and their music developed so much since then. The band is amazingly talented and they trully play beautiful music.

With this album they show us their more aggressive side, which I must add, is not as good. It is overall a much more heavy album than what we are used to from Rotting Christ. Their previous albums, "A Dead Poem", and "Sleep Of Angels", are much more melodic and tranquil than this one, however, this album has plenty of good songs, some resembling their previous work.

"If It Ends Tomorrow" and "My Sacred Path" are very good tracks. The guitars play a major role yet they seem to be kept in the background. The sound in this album is very full, and dispite what these other reviewers said, the production is very good, these reviewers don't know what they are talking about. They make it sound like it was recorded in their garage or something, c'mon be serious, and get informed before reviewing an album. My favourite song in this album is "Art Of Sin", it possesses an amazing riff that few bands can come up with. "Khronos" is another strong track, so are "Fateless", and "Glory Of Sadness".

The reason I gave this album a 4 star review is that even if this album has too many songs that are mediocre (tracks like "Aeternus", "Law Of the Serpent", "You Are I", and even "Thou Art Blind") Rotting Christ still manages to get me hooked to it. I love this band, they are really good, so you must definitely listen to them. If you have never heard their stuff I recommend "A Dead Poem" or "Sleep Of Angels" as they are the classic Rotting Christ albums.

5 out of 5 stars "Transform all suffering into plagues".......2004-04-25

Oh my Lord!!! The very first time I heard this dark and sinister slice of Black Metal perfection I kept waiting for a "down" track. You know, a song that just doesn't measure up to the rest of the album? It never happened. I bought "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers" from these guys initially, and with "Thy Mighty Contract" I was expecting a raw and less impressive CD coming from one of their earlier albums. The atmosphere on "Thy Mighty Contract" is "darkness" incarnate. There are occasional keyboard flourishes strewn throughout the album, adding nuance and an incredibly eerie texture reminiscent of evil Doom Metal. The guitar work is stellar, once again. Rotting Christ are known for their great Thrash guitar-work, and they certainly don't disappoint here. I was also expecting muddy production (a la "Darkthrone"), as Black Metal is traditionally rendered, but the guitars are crystal clear, intricate, and invariably memorable. The two bonus tracks are of special note, because normally bonus tracks are less impressive and break the flow of the CD. But here, they are both excellent. This is an outstanding Black Metal album with touches of Doom Metal and loaded with razor-sharp guitar. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars An early offering from the black metal masters.......2001-12-20

As Rotting Christ are the best black metal band I've ever heard, I was very anxious to hear this album, which many consider their best. It's easy to see why. The band's sound on this album is the darkest and most aggressive of any of their releases. Some of the riffs on this album still make my jaw drop (Just listen to "Exiled Archangels" or "Fourth Knight of Revelation"). Still, I wouldn't say it's Rotting Christ's best, since the songwriting isn't quite up to the caliber of their later releases. (My personal favorite RC album is probably Non Serviam, despite it's utterly hideous production). The main problem I have with Thy Mighty Contract is the drummer's tendency to fall back onto simplistic machine-gun drums, which can get a little boring. Anyway, despite the sometimes weak drumming, this album has some of the band's absolute best songs, including my all-time favorite "Coronation of the Serpent". The other highlight on this reissue is the inclusion of two bonus tracks: "Visions of the Dead Lover" (another favorite of mine) and "The Mystical Meeting" which is slower and more doomy than any RC song you'll probably ever find.
Overall, Thy Mighty Contract is an essential album, and Rotting Christ are an essential band.

5 out of 5 stars A must have classic Black Metal from Greece.......2001-08-29

This album was released back in 1989, when Scandinavian and American Black Metal stage just was getting born... It has very different feel. It's fast. It's melodic. It's dark and sad. Really good and original sound. I rate Rotting Christ right there with Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Satyricon, Old Man's Child and Arcturus.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate melodic black/death metal.......1999-01-20

Thy Mighty Contract, the first full length record from these Greek metal-masters sets a standard of its own in passionate metal. The music flows with immense emotion woven neatly into powerful classic deathmetal styled riffs, the beauty is the fact that all the melody is achieved not by sacrificing the speed but rather using it as the very gateway !!!! It would be wrong to strictly classify this record as black metal rather it is a melodic form of powerful doom/black/death. Rotting Christ definitely compose very passionate music, with just a touch of anger, most vividly exemplified on the track "The signs of evil existence". This album is beyond a doubt a document that displays the finest musicianship imaginable and I would recomend it to anyone who has a liking for metal with brains. It easily makes it into the favourite albums of my life with a perfect 10 out of 10.

3 out of 5 stars The weakest of the Goatwhore albums........2007-01-06

Compared to Eclipse of Ages Into Black and Haunting Curse, this album is by far the weakest. I don't know if they were trying to cut into the MTV scene with this one, which apparently they did, but it sure sounds that way. There are 2 tracks of nothing but pointless "evil" sounds and half the songs are really boring and pointless. I just have to skip over them. Now don't get me entirely wrong. There are some great songs on here. Vengeance Of Demonic Fury and Blood Guilt Eucharist are very catchy and the time signature changes in Chanting Bells Of Funeral Anguish make for a really cool song. It's worth buying this album, but when you rip it to mp3, just ditch half the tracks.

5 out of 5 stars 5.0.1.......2005-09-26

The CD says "copy protected" but if you use the newest version od itunes 5.0.1 it will rip it to your hard drive.

3 out of 5 stars Something's missing.......2005-08-30

Despite the somewhat low rating for the album, I am a fan of Goatwhore. I saw them at Art of Noise Tour 2 with Amon Amarth, Vader, Kreator, and Nile, and I honestly thought that they were the best live act there. That's saying a lot. As the previous reviewer mentioned, if you ever get a chance to see this band live, do it. Their energy, charisma, and precision is unmatched.

That said, I feel this album is lacking comparing to the excellent The Eclipse of Ages Into Black. That album was one of the best and most diverse post-millenium black metal albums I have ever heard. As mentioned, this band does a good job mixing various styles such as black, death, sludge, and even some doom metal. It's not even that the songs are terrible. Sky Inferno(track 6) is actually one of the best songs they have written. But as a whole, this album fails to stack up. This lies in a few factors.

First and foremost is the riffs. While they are still good, the tone of the riffs tend to blend together from song to song. Also, there are none that jump out at you as being extremely emotional or majestic, such as the riff in track 8(Name escapes me) of their first album.

Which brings me to the second problem; the production. The drums and guitars are too tightly meshed together in the mix, and as a result, both sound a little bit hollow, and lack the crispness of the first album. This especially hurts the riffs, and is possibly one of the reasons why they lack the atmospheric tone of their previous albums. It also hurts the drumming, which is also simply less diverse than the last album.

Which brings me to the final problem: The Diversity. While it is true that Goatwhore mixes styles very well, it's almost as if they put all of their styles into a blender and left them in the blender too long. As a result, none of the unique styles stand out and it sort of comes of as being half-sludge/half-death, with a touch of black metal influence. This also hurts the song structures and tones, which lack the variety of "The Eclipse of Ages Into Black." In fact, what separated that album from all other great black metal albums is that, while it had a very depressing atmosphere, each song was extremely different in both structure and tone, as were the instruments from song to song. One song could have grind drumming with black metal riffs and vocals, one could have sludge riffs with rock drumming and black vocals, another could have death vocals, riffs, and drumming, and yet another could have doom vocals, riffs and drumming. In short, grind/death/doom/black/sludge/etc. were all prevalent throughout the album, and yet, they are all allowed to stand out within the context of a depressing and hellistic atmosphere that marked the early 90's black metal hayday. The Funeral Dirge album is lacking the most in both diversity and atmosphere.

In short, if you are a big fan of Goatwhore, or even a fan of sludgy death metal, you will likely enjoy this. However, for black metal fans or fans looking for an introduction to Goatwhore, start with their first album. Hopefully, their Metal Blade debut will accentuate the traits of their first album.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Recomended Black Metal.......2005-07-03

This album is good, no doubt, but seeing them live is a whole other experience. Goatwhore never fails to put on one of the best live shows. Many bands sound better in the studio but Goatwhore is a band you must witness live. Get their albums but be certain to SEE THEM LIVE to witness the true intensity these guys bring to their music.

i have to admit that i like these guys, and would recommend to anyone who wants to hear something alittle different than the average black metal band, and by the way....although the cd says cdcopywrited on it doesnt mean it cannot be copied...the only way i could do it was using the windows media to (rip the tracks on media and then burn it on a blank disc, and it worked successfully,so if anyone else out there is having the same problem with that particular album to just try windows media..anyway i like these guys and i feel everyone should be open minded and give em a try..
