At the height of their 2004 "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" fame, Big & Rich's one lament was that radio didn't know what to do with them, even though they sold two million copies of their debut album, Horse of a Different Color. Their follow-up, 2005's Comin' to Your City, likewise failed to score a Top 10 single, but still went platinum. Now comes their third album, and their first single, "Lost in This Moment"--an overtly emotional ballad about getting hitched--is selling like Gatorade at a chili cook-off. Are Music City's most likeable lunatics playing it safe? Well, it sounds that way. And if that's a disappointment, given their initial rollicking (and much needed) assault on staid Nashville, there's more bad news. Big Kenny's loopy songs of peace, love, and hippified unity (especially the overblown "Eternity," featuring John Legend) now sound so familiar, replete with Pentecostal blathering ("Brothers and sisters..."), you can sing along the first time you hear them. The duo sequences the album like a vinyl disc of old, with a virtual A-side (ballads) and B-side (rockers). Not surprising, the B-side wins, even if "Radio" owes too much to the self-aggrandizing hullabaloo of Comin' to Your City and Wyclef Jean drops by to rap a few country clichés. It takes an awfully long time for this album to be fun, but it eventually does, with an AC/DC cover ("You Shook Me All Night Long") and a Brooks & Dunnish turbo-tonker ("Loud"). Fans of Big & Rich already understand that they take their spirituality as seriously as their sinning. But next time, here's hoping they spend more time in Saturday night, and less in Sunday morning. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

On their third album, Big & Rich bust down the doors of country music with new sounds, new energy and new audiences. The title Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace describes not only this collection but also Big & Rich themselves. Thank heaven for Big & Rich!

3 out of 5 stars Not as much "fun" .......2007-08-03

The first 2 albums had a lot of "fun" songs on them. This one is a little slower, and focuses on more spiritual themes. But it is still a good album.

5 out of 5 stars Big and Rich are still the greatest!.......2007-07-30

It doesn't take a genius to see that these guys are great! You can't listen to any of their albums without wanting to sing along. All their albums are filled with chart toppers (in my heart). And if it takes topping charts to get your attention, well they just happen to have the #1 song in the US. That's right guys, now the whole country knows that these guys have more than what it takes, and will keep on COMIN'! These guys will be around for years to come and girls (ok, so 31 isn't a girl) like me will love every minute of it! Keep it comin' guys, your the greatest!

This has got to be one of the BEST CD's I have ever heard. I love every song on here, ok, well...I have to say the remake of the ZZTOPP song is not a fave of mine, but the rest of the CD is definatly out of this world. This CD has not left my player since I got it and it is not leaving anytime soon!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As Previous Records by Artist.......2007-07-23

This cd was Ok but not as good as Big & Riches previous 2 cd's. The hard driving country they are known for was minimal on this record and that really disappointed me. I am used to loving every sone on their cd' san dI only liked about 3 on this cd. They can do much better.

The Pirate Queen, with a score by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon), took a critical beating when it opened on Broadway, but as this catchy cast recording demonstrates, that reception was really unnecessarily harsh. Set in the 17th century, the show (which closed after only 85 performances) tells the story of Grace O'Malley (Stephanie J. Block), an Irish ship captain and pirate who defied Queen Elizabeth I (Linda Balgord). The combination of that setting with the fact that the producers also brought us Riverdance means an overall Celtic flavor. But fans of Boublil and Schönberg should not fear. The duo delivers plenty of the over-the-top, super-emotional power ballads they're famous for--it's hard not to wonder what Celine Dion would make of songs such as "Woman" or "I'll Be There" (the latter sung by a man, but no matter!). Special kudos to Balgord, whose deliciously campy stage portrayal of Elizabeth I comes across well on "The Waking of the Queen," "The Role of the Queen," and two harpsichord-driven, vibrato-laden duets with Block, "She Who Has All" and "Woman to Woman." Also of note to fans of traditional singing is the participation of Áine Uí Cheallaigh (known from Riverdance) on several tracks. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST, BUT STILL BRILLIANT.......2007-08-02

I read the reviews before purchasing this CD, and seeing as they were so mixed, I decided to just get it and see for myself after listening to samples of the tracks.

I was really glad I did. I have a keen musical ear and a discriminatory musical palate, and I'm usually pretty good at judging things by their covers (even though I know I shouldn't). I was utterly pleased with this musical after listening to it twice. It gets four stars for not blowing me away like some musicals can on the first listening (Les Miserables is a great example). But the point is that it gets all of those four stars.

Irish/Celtic music usually begins to irritate me after I listen to it for a while. It's nice, it's pleasant, but it's not my cup of Earl Grey tea. But the blend of Schonberg's and Boubil's distinct style of musical (made popular by their other work) with the more natural/historical sound of Great Britain blends well. I feel that if this musical had not appeared on Broadway with all the hype surrounding Pirates of the Caribbean releasing it's third installment, that this musical would have garnered more respect, instead of the mass populace thinking, as I believe, "oh, another pirate thing." I am sad that I get the chance to go to see a show in late September in NYC, and this one's already gone - the only one I really want to see.

The money's worth it for a few of the tracks by themselves. Namely, "Woman", "I Dismiss You", "Surrender", and surprisingly, the "Entr'acte". Others have stated in their reviews that they don't like "Boys'll Be Boys" as it's so utterly expected in the tradition of a "Master of the House" song. You know what? Who cares. I think "Boys'll be Boys" as well as "Rah-Rah, Tip-Top" are entertaining for the ears, and every musical has its form of comic relief - though I must say, both songs are dark comedy focusing around characters who are chauvinists. I haven't yet got that spin on Thenardier, as despicable and delightful as he was in Les Miserables. Though initially it's hard to understand some of the Queen's pieces, the feeling of the absolute monarch comes cleanly through, and the harpsichord background is not cliche. It's perfect in those pieces.

I urge other people who are considering buying this to check out these reviews, but judge it for yourselves, and don't start listening to it with expectations. Rather, just sit back and enjoy the show.

5 out of 5 stars Broadway not Chicago.......2007-07-31

This album is good. If you saw the Original production, Pre-Broadway in Chicago, you will notice the differences that the show acquired for its Broadway production. It is a good representation of a show that appears to have lost its luster when moving from the Windy City to the Big Apple. My kids I I listen to the album over and over and cannot get enough of it.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC MUSICAL.......2007-07-30

An excellent recording of the Broadway production. This show has a strong storyline and the music is superb! Having seen the show in New York the week before it closed, I really can't understand why this wasn't another long-runner for Boublil and Schonberg. It was a disgrace that it didn't receive any Tony award nominations. At least, we have this recording to savour of a classic musical, which hopefully will have a future in the UK.

5 out of 5 stars Unsinkable Pirate Queen.......2007-07-30

Loved the show and the extremely talented cast! Now I can "Sail to the Stars" whenever I want.

1 out of 5 stars Just plain dull.......2007-07-27

Not much to recommend here. If you've heard "Les Mis", "Miss Saigon" and "Martin Guerre" (or any of the variations of "Riverdance"), you've heard this score. Dull, Dull, Dull.

Loaded with lyrics about nightmares, pain, isolation and broken relationships, One X, the sophomore effort from Three Days Grace should be a downright bummer of a ride. Instead, the listener manages to find uplift lurking beneath the weighty lyrics as the quartet churns out a series of anthemic, crunch-chord songs. The band moves from arena-ready light metal with "It's All Over" to the sex groove of "Animal I Have Become," before plunging the listener into full-on chaotic heaviness during the anti-alienation anthem "Riot" and easing us into the atmospheric future hit "Get Out Alive." Throughout, TDG remains true to its core alt-metal sound. While that sound has been called unimaginative and unoriginal and at times does feel a little too familiar, the material on One X is never less than convincing and it packs a serious and stinging rock `n' roll punch track after track. --Jedd Beaudoin

5 out of 5 stars I love this new band.......2007-07-31

Well they have been around a while but they are new enough, who could not like this nice mix of musical tastes? It's all over, Never too late, and Riot are my favorites but I like them all. I wish I would have heard of this band sooner but now that I have I am really going to be listening to their other releases. This is good rock that does not assault the senses or hurt your ears. I hope this band stays together for a long time they seem to be different than a lot of the bands out there today, just kind of doing their own thing and not trying to sound like the band next door.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry Lyrics.......2007-07-06

The band is excellent. They are good musicians and play tightly together. The problem is the lyrics are awful. This is nothing less than nightmares set to music. If you have these same thoughts running through your head, seek some professional psychiatric help. Absolutely not recommended for young listeners. Parents you are warned. No wonder the record industry is on the ropes.

My Favorite CD
Three Days Grace is not only for one group of people. A lot of people I know and people I don't know love Three Days Grace.Rockers, punk, and the girls scream for them. I went to their concert when they came to buffalo and they were sweet. I never heard a band that sounded just as good live as they are on the CD.Here are some of there songs: Are You Ready, Pain, Never Too late, Just Like You, I Hate Everything About You, and tons more.
When I first listened to the CD I never stopped. In my opinion this CD is amazing and I can't wait until they make another one.I play the drums and when I heard the drummer I was BLOWN away.
I recommend this CD to everyone who is willing to listen to something new.You will be impressed,Even my mom loves them.

5 out of 5 stars One X.......2007-06-12

I like the CD One X by Three Days Grace. This CD has 12 songs on it. These songs are about 3 minutes long. Three Days Grace is a Canadian band. I like the songs Riot, One X and all the other song on the CD. There is some swearing in three of the songs. My opinion of this CD would be a 10 out of 10. I love this CD so much that I downloaded it on my I pod. I would recommend this CD to kids that are older than 12 because of the swearing. I would also recommend this CD to people that like rock music

Resembling at times a soft-sung Robert Plant, Buckley was an intuitive vocalist capable of dizzying arabesques and choir-boy sweetness. He is joined here by a tight band for 10 tracks highlighting his stylistic range--Pearl Jam bluesy on "Eternal Life," impossibly serene on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," art-school noisy on "So Real," Led Zep daring on "Mojo Pin." Unorthodox, this was the debut of '94. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Buckley fan.......2007-07-12

A friend turned me on to Jeff Buckley music and am now a fan. His sound is so good and haunting. Even though his life was cut so short, his music lives on forever.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Male Solo Album of all Time : A Masterpiece.......2007-06-14

The reason why this is actually the greatest male solo album of all time, is because no other album on earth has such a perfect harmony of so many genres of music - rock, pop, jazz, neo-soul, and even sufi melodies.

I can safely say that twenty years from now, "Grace" will be hailed as probably the most important cultural document arising out of the rock movement of the 1900s. The passion here is more palpable that anything put out by say, The Beatles or Eric Clapton (geniuses in their own right). Its one thing to here people say "Oh, this is the greatest album ever!" and "Best Album of all time!", or when fans go "This makes the entire catalog of The Rolling Stones look like kindergarten!" - but that, dear reader, is the happy reality of this album - its better than almost all of the artists mentioned above. It really is.

If you're new to Jeff Buckley, heres a quick rundown of what this album actually sounds like - take a 27 year old boy-man with a soaring, beautiful, jazz-suited voice, and hear him sing touching slow-rock songs, and some unlikely covers ("Lilac Wine" by Nina Simone, "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen). The voice is the instrument here. Production is flawless. He can sound like a little girl whose hearts' been broken for the first time, or a 70 year old singing from wisdom and experience - all on one song. If that isn't amazing, what is?

For years now, I've held that Tori Amos' "Scarlet's Walk" is the greatest album ever recorded. Well, musically and conforming to my tastes, I'd have to say that the Amos album still ranks high on my list. But I listened to "Grace" when it first released in 1994, and its been a friend to me since then. What an experience that was, me as a gangly 17 year old with headphones on to shut the rest of the world of - Jeff Buckley was easy to idolize when you're that age, but what I didn't count on was this album becoming a permanent fixture in my life even in my thirties. I guess `timeless' would be the word, but I don't want to use adjectives here that I would use for just any other album.

Many Tori Amos fans seem to love this album as well, even though Tori is a completely different sort of performer. While Amos sings primarily of life through her eyes (fair enough), Buckley reaches out to you and sings about YOUR life, which is something that not many singer-songwriters are capable of doing.

If you haven't heard this before, lucky you! I can only imagine the goosebumps you're gonna get when you slide this CD into your player and hear the opening verse of "Mojo Pin", Track 1. The title track is a bonafide classic, but its on "Lilac Wine" that this album finally finds its wings and soars. How can a human voice sound like this, you ask yourself. If heaven was packaged in a three minute track on a CD, this would be it. Nothing can come close, and if the original songwriter were alive today I can only imagine his amazement at what it has been transformed to in Buckley's hands. Another ancient lyrics "Corpus Christi Carol" is just as stunning.

Jeff Buckley died in 1997. Since then, this album has been hailed as a classic, but I find this to be quite cheap and derogatory, because its too easy to hail something once an artist is dead. I mean, I did like Nirvana, but lost all interest in them after their catalog was plundered and sold out to commercial gain upon Kurts' death. Thankfully, that hasn't quite happened to Jeff (though we have had a few posthumous releases, not of the magnitude of Nirvana, however), because Jeff was only starting his career and there wasn't a whole lot available to readily release. His estate, now in his mothers' hands, have released some Live albums, a double-CD of his unfinished work, and a DVD, but nothing compares to "Grace" which is the only album he released in his lifetime.

You know, in this world, its hard to find a thing of beauty that retains its' power and hold over you. Friends come and go, relationships fade away, and family sometimes isn't all its cut out to be. I find that music has been my sole companion through most of lifes' ups and downs, and "Grace" has been a constant support. In times of highs or lows, all I need to do is to listen to "Lilac Wine" or "Eternal Life" and its' as if fresh new liquid energy is being poured into me by some divine entity (well, the experience is other-worldly, for sure). But more than that, it's a thing of wonder that a record soon celebrating fifteen years of release has been a constant soundtrack to my life, mirroring my moods and emotions, and being the best friend through it all. For this, I can only thank Buckley. I bet even he didn't know what he was creating.

The new version of "Grace" is entitled the "Legacy Edition" and I highly recommend you get that over the single-CD version. Yes, the single CD version is what Jeff released originally, but this new version, supervised by his mother, is what I now consider the most essential version of this album. Its my No. 1 Desert island disc (over Amos' Scarlet's Walk" in its' current form). The second disc, in my opinion is not `better' than the first disc, its just `different'.

The most beautiful new track here is the shimmering ballad "Forget Her", which had been spoken of for years, but now that we have it, it exceeds our expectations. This has got to be the most underrated rarity of all Buckley's work. There is also the long `Kanga Roo', and the amazing `Mama, you be on my mind'. I must say though, that the second disc, save for Track 1, has a rougher, edgier sound, but at no point do these sound like `demos' or `cheap live recordings' as many people assume them to be. In fact, even though it probably didn't go through the multi-layered studio instrumentation as the first disc did, the second is just as well produced and impeccably put together, and is a worthy addition to the catalog. For those of us who were fans of the original CD, this new Legacy Edition is the most glorious musical occasion in recent memory.

The Legacy Edition, while bestowing the album with the greater respect it deserves, also offers us a DVD with all Jeff's official music videos, with a documentary thrown in as well. This definitive 3-Disc package is the way to go, if you need to get "Grace".

Throughout my life, I've always been fascinated and felt kinship toward Buckley due to his obsession and love for Sufism and the Qawwali genre of music. He was a follower of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and in fact, one of Nusrat's posthumous releases is even dedicated to Buckley. While "Grace" does not have any songs of this nature, I find that Buckley's voice is strangely very "exotic" sounding in places, almost as if he were channeling a Moslem preacher from the wilds of the Afghan highlands (I'm sure Jeff would consider this a compliment). Listen to this album again, and note what I'm saying here - his voice is just so adaptable and I think that he channels Nusrat in more than a few places on this record. Now, this is a fabulous experience, and I only understood the relevance of this years later, when I read an interview that Buckley did with Nusrat during a US tour. Jeff also lists Patti Smith (one of my musical gurus) as one of his icons (he even toured with her at one point), and her influence upon his music is quite evident (traces of her debut album are present through strains of "Grace").

Let me not mince words - "Grace" is the best thing to happen to the world of music, since, well... ever. This is one album that not many people know about, but those who do most certainly live a charmed life upon possession of this record. If your musical inclinations and `best-ofs' lie with "Abbey Road" and "The White Album", well, what can I say. You've certainly missed out on what is obviously the true blueprint for what music ought to be based on. This is genre bending, music-revolutionizing stuff here, and you should do yourself a favor and just buy this.

I would also highly recommend the new Legacy Edition of "Live at Sin-E", which is actually Jeff's first album. It was released early on as an EP, and now has been extended into a mega two-hour event. What a treat! Other than the usual tracks, the standout for me on this record is "Yeh Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hain", which was incidentally the first song by Khan that Jeff ever heard. I would say that if you're reading this review, check out the link above to this Live set, and add to your cart. I know that it's a pretty obvious endorsement, but I'd really like you to get both these Legacy Edition records and listen to them. These are records you NEED to own.

To sum things up, what we have here is the Greatest Male Solo Record of all time. It breaks new ground, reinvents a whole new genre, and introduces you to the most beautiful male voice I have ever heard. I cannot recommend this album highly enough.

If Music were Religion, consider this your Bible.

Five Stars - Jeff Buckley, you will be missed.

4 out of 5 stars These boots were made for..........2007-05-19

Jeff Buckley was a musical firebomb. He had a slow burn and a long comet like wake throughout his career. He had a nearly 'perfect' range as shown on Crusade era carols and mixed jams like 'Mojo Pin' and 'So Real'. To hear him whisper, 'I'm afraid....I'm afraid to love you,' is to hear beautiful resonate through sound- it was emotive, raw, shimmery, and sensual. The CD is the only full effort produced by Buckley encompassing the title of: complete album. Every other compilation was either unfinished (My Sweetheart the Drunk, revised and fretted over and then Buckley drowned) or it was a piecemeal of other recordings either caught live or pored over in remnants. However, one thing remains standard: Jeff Buckley was a tremendous vocalist with a gift for the dramatic, the flair of artistry, and although he drowned (following a familial confession of depression) his music rises from the fathoms as a beacon for real talent. If only he hadn't gone so soon.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection........2007-05-17

If I had to pick one CD to take with me to a far off deserted island, this would be it. His version of "Hallelujah" is now considered definitive, with good reason, too. If this CD doesn't move you it's a pity because you are missing out on something truly wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars the most genuine of albums.......2007-04-15

Grace, as the first (and only) fully completed record by jeff buckley, is, as a whole, the most beautiful musical endevour i have ever run across. it's dense and addictive and haunting. his melodic sense is completely his own. the origional songs on grace are beautiful but not yet altogether defined, or at least that's how i interpret it now, having listened to the album hundreds of times. but that density and still forming quality is increadibly appealing to my youth. his words resonate.
the album sticks together as a whole. his voice is beautiful, peircing, his range awe-inspiring. the bare simplicity of Haleluja is so beautiful as to be physically painful. Dream Brother is completely haunting and leaves me grasping at shadows. Last Goodbye has a totally bizzare melodic structure. Lover, You Should Have Come Over is increadibly true to youth. Eternal Life is loud and angry. Corpus Christi is sort of jaw dropping just because it's hard to believe he had the range to sing it. musically grace is, quite simply, brilliant.
but what sets jeff buckley, and specifically Grace, appart, is something beyond musical ability. he brought music his whole being it seems. he didnt hold any emotion back. he sang becuase he truly loved to. and he could bring people emotion through his voice. anger, desire, sorrow, pain, love, joy, euphoria. listening to jeff buckley is like reading Cormac McCarthy. it brings one such a clear picture, or feeling, of raw humanity. it hurts but it's true to existance.

What distinguishes Vermont's Grace Potter from the recent run of the female singer-songwriter mill is her affinity for anthems and a powerhouse band that can deliver the goods. Though quieter fare such as "You May See Me" and "Lose Some Time" finds one foot in folk music, her heart is plainly with hard-charging rockers such as the opening "Ah Mary," the melodic propulsion of "Ain't No Time," and the supercharged kick of "Mastermind." Ballads such as "Apologies" and "Falling or Flying" show her soulful side, while the sexually assertive road song "Stop the Bus" provides further indication of her range. The closing "Big White Gate" sounds like a gospel cousin of John Prine's "Angel from Montgomery." --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars One of the BESTmodern rock bands.......2007-06-10

I recently went to a Nickelback concert and Three Days Grace was opening for them. I fell in love with the band hearing their music at the concert and felt that Nickelback should opening for Three Days Grace, not the other way around!

    Top Songs For Me:
Take Me Under, Wake Up, Scared, Overrated, and Home

5 out of 5 stars Three Days Grace C.D........2007-06-01

Great CD, Shipping took a little longer than expected, but it was worth it. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars goes downhill after "Home".......2007-05-24

Canada is famous for producing mainly three things: Nickelback, insanely cheap prescriptions, and Three Days Grace. This quartet of Canadian rockers really know how to keep you listening... til about track 4. Then, the rest of the CD is just filler. Here are my favorite tracks, in order:

    1) Home: In my opinion, the best Three Days Grace song ever. I really identify with some of the lyrics: "I'll be coming home just to be alone... no matter how hard I try, you're never satisfied... I can hardly wait til you get off my case!!" Relatively easy to learn on guitar, too.

    2) Just Like You: Second-best TDG song ever. Also, the only song I can do halfway good on drums.

    3) Burn: Average, but still good.

    4) (I Hate) Everything About You: Way too overplayed, but still a good song; I really like the video.

Other than tracks 1-4, you really don't need to get this debut CD. It's good, yeah, but it can be better.

    4 out of 5 stars 3DG's Eponymous Debut........2007-05-16

During the summer of 2003, Canadian group Three Days Grace put out their first full-length effort, garnering them widespread attention and propelling them into mainstream success. 3DG play a brand of post-grunge modern rock, and they've certainly become a favorite modern contemporary of mine in that vein. This album seethes with emotive energy, adhering to themes of bitter losses, to maintaining individuality, and tug-o-war relationships. While the songwriting may not be considerably groundbreaking, it weaves with the melodic choruses to make for some distinct and memorable tracks. While the singles are strong in their own right, noted favorites here are the up-tempo and forceful "Scared," the false re-assurance of "Let You Down," the hollow resilience of "Drown," and the shot of redemption found in "Wake Up." "Take Me Under" is also hauntingly catchy, starting off slowly, with the "Take me all the way" verse that embedded itself into my mind for some time, before bursting into the chorus. And "Overrated" can be deciphered depending on the listener's point of view.

When it comes to modern rock, you really can't go wrong here. Three Days Grace have made a name for themselves since their debut, and I'm sure they'll be conducting a strong following for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Three Days Grace.......2007-05-15

This album is an excellent debut disk for Three Days Grace. Their hits come early in the album and the undiscovered songs is a jewel that people that only download their music will never find. However some of the music could be helped out if it was more complex. If you liked this CD then I would buy Three Day's Grace's sophmore album One-X Which they bring in a second guitar player, and expand on their strengths.

    Album Description

Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.

Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.

"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."

Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."

With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08

This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.

    4 out of 5 stars Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08

Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!

    4 out of 5 stars Very soothing.......2007-05-14

Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13

the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.

4 out of 5 stars Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20

Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.

    Album Description

This is Snatam Kaur's latest release and it is a joy to behold. Snatam has woven a magnificent tapestry of Gurmukhi, English, violin, guitar and flute and produced an album that is both spiritually moving and foot tapping at the same time.

Like every Kundalini Yoga class, the album begins with the chant Ong Namo and unfolds with Snatam's flawless voice dancing over gentle flute, Indian violin, nylon string guitar and subtle keyboard. She weaves in devotional English lyrics such that one experiences the essence of the Gurmukhi chant with simple clarity.

With deeply-moving music composed jointly by Thomas Barquee and Snatam Kaur, the second track, Ray Man, seduces listeners into a state of sublime meditation. The lyrics translate to "Oh my mind, practice yoga in this way."

The third track, Hari Har, is the liveliest song Snatam has ever recorded. A fast-paced, drum-filled mantra that gets you up on your feet, this track introduces us to a much stronger side of Snatam's vocals.

The next track, a simple and beautiful version of the healing meditation Ra Ma Da Sa, is accompanied by slow and soft classical guitar and keyboards with the flavor of a lazy river, gently flowing by on a summer afternoon.

The final two tracks reveal the true cross-over nature of this album. Both in English, they are two songs very near to Snatam's heart. The first, By Thy Grace, has been a favorite at her live performances over the last year. This track sheds light on the title of the album, opening with the line "It is by the Grace that I sing Your Holy Name." Closing with an original composition of the Irish blessing, May the Long Time Sun Shine Upon You … a sweet and grace-filled farewell prayer.

5 out of 5 stars Great as yoga music.......2007-02-11

I heard this music during my yoga class at the local recreation center and asked the instructor what it was. I then purchased it on Amazon and have been listening to it in the car and at home. My daughter even listens to it before going to bed to wind down. I love the first song particularly and the title song.

5 out of 5 stars Angelic Voice that brings me peace and calmness.......2006-12-23

I had no idea if I would like this CD and Singer, but now that I have recieved the CD, her voice is so smooth and sweet as honey, calming, peaceful, and makes me feel like everything is good in the world. It's great for relaxing to, background music, massage, yoga, driving, and graceful or slow flow-like dancing. It would be good as a cool-down music after a good work-out too. If it were sound track to a movie, it would be great for beautiful landscape or the uplifting feel good end of a movie when everything turned out the way you were hoping it would. My husband is very sound-sensative and auditorily tuned-in, and remarked, "Her voice is beautiful!" He says the about very few voices. I am glad I took the chance on this CD, and don't regret it at all. I will definately order some more of her CDs, now that I hear how great she is. I am pleased with my purchas!

    5 out of 5 stars Grace.......2006-04-05

Lyrical and lovely, I find myself humming these as I walk into the pasture to bring in my horse. What a wonderful way to meditate!

5 out of 5 stars Snatam Kaur Khalsa.......2006-01-14

Devine beauty delivered in a soul revitalizing blend of eastern and western harmonics. She is even better live if you get a chance to see her.

5 out of 5 stars Divine Perfection - A Soundtrack for my Life.......2005-03-27

With an extensive music library, I find myself returning almost exclusively to Snatam Kaur. I have every one of her CD's on constant rotation in my home, car, and office. Not only do I absolutely love listening, meditating, and living to her music. But I've come to realize that I operate from a better and more loving place when I have her playing in the background while at my demanding and high-profile job in the corporate offices of a fortune 50 company.

With so much gratitude, thank you Snatam for becoming the soundtrack to my life.

This is a fantastic cd for any mood you're in! If you're feeling down, listening to it will pick you up and revive your spirit! If you are already in a great mood, this cd will enhance that feeling and keep you rolling through your day.. or night! My favorite time to pop it in is when I am overwhelmed and completely stressed out - ready to collapse or just give up on the day! The title track - Nothing but the Water - builds up to the most energetic, rhythmic, inspirational peak, then slows down at the end to completely remove every last ounce of stress from head to toe. :)

5 out of 5 stars Nothing But the Water? Yea that's pretty much all you need........2007-07-28

My first exposure to Grace Potter and the Nocturnals was live, and that night I picked up this CD right after their set ended. It didn't leave my CD player for weeks, and that was only because I ordered their first CD "Original Soul". Though back to the business at hand. The CD has a very 70's feel to it, and thankfully doesn't sound overproduced like alot of today's CDs. There's a perfect blend of songs, higher energy tunes like "Sweet Hands" and "Nothing But the Water", bluesy tunes like "2:22", and mellower tunes like "Toothbrush and My Table" and "Ragged Company" which have a sort of a 'sit back and take it all in' vibe to them. I've already worn out that first copy I bought of the album and have purchased a 2nd as well, money well spent. If you haven't seen them in concert, do yourself a favor and do so as well, you won't be disappointed in the CD or the show.

5 out of 5 stars Got to Listen!.......2007-07-13

Amazing album. Grace Potter is an amazing artist and this album is a must hear. Recorded in an empty barn, the band just hung out for a week and recorded music together, they sound like they have been playing together for years. What a great band and great soul.

5 out of 5 stars Very promising new artist.......2007-03-02

There is a blues and gospel influence on the songs on this disc although the songs are not straight blues or gospel. You can hear this in Grace's voice and the arrangements. She reminds me somewhat of Susan Tedeschi, who is also from New England. This is a very strong effort from a young artist. I think she can be around a long time if she stays true to her roots and avoids doing work that the record companies think they can sell better.

    4 out of 5 stars Rips A Rock & Roll Hole.......2007-02-25

The music on "Nothing But the Water" grabbed me as I audio-browsed from a retailer sound wall. The opening track "Toothbrush & My Table" grabbed me as Grace's powerful vocals introduced me to this young singer, "I know I done you wrong but here we are face to face." Her band runs hot on many of the stellar tracks. "Sweet Hands" rips a rock & roll hole with the band playing flat out with Scott Tournet's electric slide a standout. Grace's no-holes-barred vocals bust it through the roof, "Seems there's nothing I can do to get a little bit of love from the hands of you." "Nothing But the Water Part 2" is a stunner with Grace's surging B-3 organ setting the pace. The DVD shot by Vermont Public Television is an excellent video presentation that reveals this a hot live band. Potter gives DVD homage to Lucinda Williams by inserting Williams' "Joy" into the middle of her own "Joey." This excellent independent release gives the promise for more. Room for growth presents itself in the songwriting; some of the songs could benefit from more melodic imagination. What is here is worth repeated listening. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Krishna Das/Chalisa Lovers Delight In A Great Package .......2007-06-27

The CD KD has been destined to make since he found Maharaji! Great audio quality, terrific liner notes and SIX versions of the Chelisa plus "Where'd You Get That Ring?". And a great pronunciation guide that I've been wanting for years. Jai krishna Das!

5 out of 5 stars Music to Make Your Heart Happy.......2007-06-21

There's something special about the Hanuman Chalisa. Maybe the way it seems to flow, unbroken reminding us that every part of life is joined to every other; maybe the sweet sound of ancient words. It never grows old. Even so, I wondered whether I needed *six* more versions, plus a repeat of the previously recorded "Ring Song."

I needn't have worried. This CD has leapt to the top of my commuting favorites, and I expect it will stay there permanently. The arrangements are sweet and varied and full of energy.

Sri Ram Chalisa is sung call as call and (sri Ram jai Ram) response - a boon to those of us who like to sing along but haven't mastered all the words .

Hallelujah Chalisa has a beautiful traditional flowing (when does he breathe?) arrangement.

Good Ole Chalisa is KD's traditional Chalisa tune, sung in a heart-warming choral style.

Nina Chalisa is a lilting, faintly medieval, all-female chorus.

Mountain Chalisa is another sweet, more traditional arrangement.

Bernie's Chalisa - my favorite - is a slightly slower, sweet, uplifting choral arrangement with phrasing that seems to make it easier to memorize the words (I'm six lines in ).

The Ring Song is a great new arrangement of the charming story of Hanuman finding the kidnapped Mother Sita, given a slightly less "rock and role" treatment than the one recorded on "Pilgrim Heart," but still lots of fun.

The second CD has two spoken versions of the Chalisa for those of us who aspire eventually to learn the words - one a slow complete recitation, the other - even slower -has each line repeated twice. My only small complaints are (a) I would have liked a slow version set to music, which makes memorization easier and (b) Driving would be safer if each line (or pair of lines) had been recorded as a separate track. That would have saved a lot of trouble searching through the disc while practicing.

Music, inspiration, an (optional) "workshop" in chant, and bliss all packaged into one CD. Krishna Das has truly offered us a masterpiece of grace.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-05-24

This CD is truly amazing! No one can sing the Hanuman Chalesa like Krishna Das. Every variation of this song is beautiful and the additional CD of pronunciation is incredibly helpful for those of us who would like to learn how to sing along with Krishna Das' incredible voice. Every time I play this CD during one of my yoga classes, I have students asking for the name of the CD at the end of class. This CD moves me to my soul every time I listen to it.
