After releasing its fierce, unrelenting debut Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame in 1992, Texas band Skrew looked set to revamp the face of industrial metal. Then co-writer Danny Lohner took off to join Nine Inch Nails, and the band floundered, releasing two disappointing records that had plenty of pound, but no real purpose. But with its fourth disc, Angel Seed XXIII, Skrew has steered back onto the right track. Instead of building songs around feral guitar blasts and monochromatic electro-beats, the band now alternates textures and tempos, augmenting its sound with a live drummer, and a sparser, but more effective arsenal of samples. --Jon Wiederhorn

3 out of 5 stars How does this cost 6 cents?.......2005-04-11

OK, this is not mind altering. But, it's really GOOD. Seriously, it's nothing that you're going to go and masturbate over, but it's totally listenable. I don't know what happened to these guys, except that one of them joined Ministry, but this is pretty good. Very dirty sounding, dark and sleazy. It doesn't hit the stride of say, Ministry or Godflesh, but it's a solid industrial metal album. The guy's voice sounds really good. Hahaha, it costs six cents! I lose that in a couch on a daily basis! Not great, but still better than almost everything on the radio. I say, if you can get it for less than ten bucks, go for it.

2 out of 5 stars It ends in tears.......2004-03-29

After two near classic industrial metal albums, Skrew %$&^ed the dog. It's not that Shadow of Doubt and Angel Seed XXIII are necessarily BAD albums, for any other band they'd be good, but for Skrew they're horrible.

Is this really the same band that put out Burning in Water/Drowning in Flame and Dusted?

Angel Seed isn't quite as bad as Shadow, to be fair. That album was held back by far too slow songs that seemed to drag on forever. This album feels like their treading water, either by sounding like a poor carbon copy of their early glory days, or by sounding like a poor carbon copy of bands they influenced, only with bits of Korn and Limp Bizkit thrown in. And that is not a good thing.

Either way, you should skip this and Shadow, and go straight for the first two albums.

4 out of 5 stars Song by Song.......2003-01-29

Open Up - really heavy. Excellent opener. Lyrics would be heplful on this and a few other songs.

Sea Man - Begin to show their industrial side with calm verses and a relentless chorus beat.

Seventh Eye - Rorschach Test style industrialism. It barely gets better than this for a MetalHead.

King of the Hole - A mass of choppy chaotic guitars.

Porcelain - This is the weakest song on the album. It's long and has no really heavy stuff.

Kosmo's Seed - Sounds like Manson only about 5X heavier. My second favorite song on this album.

Sputnik - Another heavy one that has an interlude then continues the insanity.

Angel Suck - Noise industrial. Pretty good stuff.

Lorsey (Man) - loud - need lyrics.

Slip - Quietest piece, but it holds it's own power lyrically.

#11 (untitled) - Upbeat and quite melodic unlike some of the heavier songs.

Hey Chris Isstas (drummer) Good to see you are doing better music than when we were in High School together. Keep it up! Carey
