Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like Black Metal meets Brian Eno. I love it!.......2007-01-01

This is a very unusual Black Metal album and definitely not for everyone.

First of all, all you Pantera and Superjoint Ritual fans expecting to hear more of the same here should just turn around and LEAVE. Now. This music is NOTHING like either group so don't even waste your time. I GUARANTEE you will be disappointed. Viking Crown's music is not for you.

Now, for everybody that's left, whether you will like this album or not will depend on how open your mind is, and on how much of a Metal traditionalist you are. If you're one of those nit-picky people who always bases their assessments of albums on the technical virtuosity of the musicians or the perfection of the production values, you probably won't like this album either.

After a first release on which he played all instruments, on this, Viking Crown's second release, Phil Anselmo (billed with tongue in cheek here as "Anton Crowley") adds the talents of his wife Opal Enthroned on keyboards and Killjoy of Necrophagia on vocals.

While the first Viking Crown release was very much oozy, underground-style Black Metal, with the added members this album ventures into new and even more experimental territory.

The album's music's being sandwiched between an intro and outro consisting of samples from the cheesy 1970 Satanism B-movie classic "I Drink Your Blood" gives us a clue that this album may not take itself all that seriously. But what matters for me here is the music, the RESULT. And for me, that result is great.

It ranges from very raw, grungy and hypnotic Black Metal like "The Burning Embers of Mockery" and "The Red Flames of Sin" to delicate and almost ambient sounding instrumental interludes like "Birth of the Devil Fetus". These quiet and pensive songs are interesting because they make the wild Black Metal songs sound all the more furious and brutal in contrast. For example, after being lulled by the darkly hypnotic "Overlords of Infinite Depression", we are then thrown into pure Black Metal hell by the totally chaotic "The Long and Mighty Reign of Satan". It's these variations in tone that make this album especially interesting.

So did Phil Anselmo intend this as a joke band? Could be. And I think that he was afraid of loosing his cred with his Mainstream Metaller fans by revealing a totally different and very experimental side, so it was easy for him to later just say "aw, actually it was all just a joke, nyuk nyuk."

But frankly I couldn't care less. The fact is that I happen to love the result, even if it might only be great by accident. Viking Crown's releases are some of my very favourite albums in my entire collection because they are so totally unique. And this is my favourite Viking Crown album of all.

But I would only recommend their albums to people with a very adventurous spirit who enjoy musical experimentation and can stomach lo-fi production, because that is the essence of what Viking Crown is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Philip Anselmo takes it to the extreme of Black Metal music........2005-01-05

When I bought this album I thought it was going to be like
Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir or Immortal.
But nah! This album is pure brutality of evil and satanism in
the black metal genre. The vocals sounds very evil and demonic.
This band and album is one of the best of the black metal genre.

2 out of 5 stars phil's own review of viking crown.......2004-10-08

here is what phil anselmo himself has to say about viking crown (quoted in REVOLVER magazine may/june 2002)"That was a joke band with me and Opal, and Killjoy from Necrophagia.I played bass guitar. It's like bad, bad, bad black metal.I'm not doing it anymore."

5 out of 5 stars Not for the trendy.......2003-04-01

An album not for trendy black metal fan's, Viking Crown is pure unholy filthy black metal, made the way it should be,The album start's of with Song of Faduf ,An intro like Black Mass, setting the mood for what's to come. The opening song,Innocence from hell speed's right into hell with fast drumming ,unholy guitar riff's and demonic scream's, The production is dirty and filthy, even the keyboards are evil and cult, not for fan's who love so called black metal with a clean and "safe" production ,this album brings me back to the days long before black metal was pretty and well known ,but to only the elite underground. Songs like "The long and mighty reign of Satan" and "Raped by an Angel" will have you in the church graveyard late at night in no time. Innocence from hell is cult and not for the trendy.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Odd Black Metal Album.......2003-03-13

I decided to purchase this album because of Killjoy and Phil Anselmo's involvment, because I have loved Necrophagia for a long time. I was very pleased with what I found. Viking Crown's sophmore release 'Innocence From Hell' is a very good black metal album that strangely meanders through out its length. Strating out as Phil Anselmo himself playing everything on Viking Crown's debut, the addition of vocalist Killjoy and Phil's wife Opal (whose 'Southern Isolation' E.P. was brilliant) on keyboards allowed Phil to go into deeper terriory.

The album goes in many directions musically. The songs range from a brilliant one and a half minute keyboard solo ("Birth of the Devil Fetus"), to a sludge meets black metal type track ("The Burning Embers of Mockery"), to flat out black metal ("The Long and Mighty Reign of Satan"). After several stellar tracks, Viking Crown explode into "The Red Flames of Sin". The track is a brutal black metal assault on the sences - also my favorite. From that, it goes to a beautifully depressing five and a half minute instrumental done by Opal - very pleasing no the ears after "The Red Flames of Sin". For the next three tracks the production pretty much goes from a decently polished sound to a raw and edgey sound that truly brings out the spirit of traditional black metal. One of those tracks is the nearly ten minute epic "Raped by an Angel". Unlike most bands, when Viking Crown does a song this long, they do not slow down or soften up. The song is an aggressive and fastpaced work of black metal genius that brings out the best of Viking Crown.

Viking Crown's sophmore release 'Innocence from Hell' is a very good, very diverse, and very odd black metal album. If you are intersted in this becuase you like Pantera, this is not for you, but this is for black metal purists who crave great music. There is only one liner not: "Recorded under the influence of Wild Turkey, Weed, and Black Candles." And that perfectly describes the far out sound that they have created.
