Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, this epic is infused with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of "Concerning Hobbits" to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of "A Knife in the Dark"). Key to the score's sense of mystery and magical place are the rich choral passages that are interspersed throughout, some so ominously gothic they make The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" sound almost sunny by comparison. Enya's contributions ("The Council of Elrond" and the song "May It Be") add a sense of organic tranquility, but it's Shore's Wagnerian-scaled orchestral score that should long be cherished by admirers of film music and hobbits alike. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars The music is good but the movie is better.......2007-04-10

I really enjoyed the 3 series of The Lord of the Rings movie so I wanted the music. The soundtracks are good but if you like the movie the soundtracks watch the movie. They remind you of certain parts in the movie like the song Concerning Hobbits. The song is whimsical. Enyna has a great voice, very haunting. The Ring Goes South is another favorite of mine. I can enjoy these soundtracks as classical or dramatic music. I bought them because I loved the Lord of the Rings which has many similarities to Braveheart. Bravery, courage, strength, honesty, selflessness, love and other good human qualities people try to attain and admire them in the people and movies they view.

5 out of 5 stars A grand sountrack..........2007-01-10

One of Howard Shore's best soundtracks around. The music is strong enough to tell its own separate story apart from FOTR. You will never tire of the heart-pounding excitement from The Bridge of Kazaad-Dum track.

5 out of 5 stars Lord of the Rings Original Soundtracks, films 1 and 3.......2006-11-08

Having made an earlier mistake of buying 2 C.D.'s which were not original soundtrack, I can truthfully say these are the best. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, look no further - no one does it better than The London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer Howard Shore. You will be back in Middle Earth reliving all those wonderful scenes. I bought only The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King from Amazon.com because I already had the Two Towers from Amazon.co.uk and I would recommend all three - magical.

5 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring!.......2006-10-02

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. I think this first one is my favorite of the three "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the lighter moments, like the sweet, simple hobbit theme, with the grander and more menacing sections of the music. (That despite the fact that said hobbit theme begins exactly like the first phrase of the Protestant hymn "This Is My Father's World," which prompts me to think of the hobbits trouping off to Sunday school every time I hear it. But now when I hear the hymn, I think of Lord of the Rings, so I suppose all's fair!) What impressed me most as I watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" was how scary the music was when the hobbits were being pursued. Those relentless drums and eerily screaming drums made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even though I knew the story like the back of my hand and knew for a fact that the poor little heroes would manage to escape. But the music truly made me wonder otherwise ... Now that's good composition! And the fact that the filmmakers chose to include background music in so many of the scenes, almost continuously ... well, that's just good filmmaking! The other impressive thing about Howard Shore's score is how the voicing and repeating motifs tie the whole thing together, like the finest of symphonies. The total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for more seminal soundtracks, try John Williams' defining scores for the "Star Wars" series and Basil Poledouris's spectacular score for the original "Conan the Barbarian."

5 out of 5 stars It is the best of the three CDs!!!.......2006-09-10

For me, the music of the first sequel is my favourite since this is also the sequel that I prefer in the trilogy (I remember being blown away by the quality of this movie, the actors, the setting, the action scenes, the special effects, the moving relationships between all the characters and of coourse the music)
I think that the other CDs are a bit repetitive once you've got this one, even if I still like the music of the second soundtrack 'The Two Towers'. As for the 3rd sequel, I seldom listen to it as there is only one track that I like, 'The Return of the King'.
Now, this first CD of the trilogy is actually very good. Thanks to Enya, it is haunting and the songs are beautiful. There are a few eery but melodious songs like 'The Council of Elrond', 'Lothlorien', 'May it Be'. I love the change of tempo, the balance between fast and slow movements in 'A Knife in the Dark', 'Flight to the ford', and 'Amon Hen' which is my favourite piece (the Death of Boromir) with the oboe sound mixed with the beat of the drums and finaly the haunting voice of the singer. Track 17 is also worth listening. I like this CD because you've got different tempos and melodies and Anya is a great singer to me. But I also enjoy listening to Emiliana Torrini's song 'Gollum's Song'in the second soundtrack...

5 out of 5 stars This Is What The 80s Sounded Like.......2007-04-21

Those of you who follow my reviews know that I don't hand out 5 star reviews very often or easily
in this case,Autograph have richly deserved this honor

Sign in please is the debut of one of rock and rolls most underrated bands
they came in the middle of the 80s and dominated the airwaves with 'Turn Up The Radio' a song that was so catchy and good that you couldn't ignore it
but the surprise is that every song on this debut is just as good

you can almost see the whole band smiling as they play song after song of perfect rock and roll
the keyboards sound cheesy but that's part of the appeal
this is what the 80s was all about, good times, smiles, and having fun
other rock bands of that time couldn't quite grasp that (some did, like bon jovi, poison and y&t but Autograph was one of the first)
I listen to this all the time and smile each and every time

the opening track 'send her to me' is straight ahead rock and roll filled with keyboards, bright guitars, and smiling vocals...you can almost hear the carnival rides in the background or feel yourself roller skating,it's just plain fun!
then comes "turn up the radio' one of the best and most fun rock songs of all time...boy did RCA drop the ball, when they had this MONSTER hit they should have released another single or two from this great album but they never did...what a waste...the label never pushed this band and they dropped out of sight after this (they released other albums but they never got the attention they should have)
from there it goes to night teen and non stop...a real guilty pleasure, always gives me happy thoughts of teenage night life
the next song 'Cloud Ten' should have been a tv theme song,it has that kind of feel...good times!
from there 'Deep End' a great song
and then 'My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me' one of the stand out songs from this album...this should have been a hit single...all about a girl who can't make up her mind..great chorus and very catchy, the lyrics are all too true!!
from there 'Thrill Of Love' the keyboards really make this song great!!!
the next song 'Friday' sums up what the 80s was all about...having a good time all the time...God,I miss those days!!!

the next song 'In The Night' has lots of atmosphere and really grooves
and the album ends strongly with 'All I'm Gonna Take' which is a mid-tempo rocker that has lots of atmosphere and emotion
this band is absolutely amazing...if you love Night Ranger,or Bon Jovi or Poison or Y&T you should check them out...also if you love Bill Hunt's solo material (the lead singer of Christian rock band X-Terra) you would absolutely love Autograph....this band has everything it takes!

the upside - Great songs start to finish...the best of the best are 'Turn Up The Radio' 'Night Teen And Non Stop' 'All I'm Gonna Take' 'Send Her To Me' and 'My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me'

the downside - their record label not pushing them more! This band should have been HUGE!!!

the bottom line - no matter what kind of music you love, please go out and buy this album...if you want to show people what the 80s sounded like this is the perfect example!!! It doesn't get much better than this...donutman says so!!!

4 out of 5 stars DON'T OVER-ANALYZE IT, IT'S GREAT ROCK!!! .......2006-08-28

I remember loving this album when I was a teenager. Listening to it nowadays, I still enjoy it. A lot of it is cliched, and some of the lyrics are pretty laughable. But I remembered that one of the things I liked about the band was that it had a sense of humor. Probably originating from singer Plunkett!!! It's fun music, not music to brood about, and take apart critically. TURN UP THE RADIO is a great song, with a fantastic solo. Pretty much all the solos by Steve Lynch are phenomenal, and he triple-tracked a lot of them ala Randy Rhoads. I saw him once at a guitar seminar, and he played the solos for us note-for-note with backing tracks, including his solo piece HAMMERHEAD (which is on their second album), and it was great. His work was a big part of what I liked about Autograph.

The music is mid 80s rock fare... not too hard. Lots of keyboards on this... sort of reminiscent of the style employed by the band EUROPE a few years later. The vocalist has a raspy style, with a little David Lee Roth in him now and then (vocal quips). The guitarist is a state of the art hammering specialist, with an ability to write phenomenal solos that remain melodic and interesting. Overall, the album is good solid rock with a good beat, and with more than average humor (in the lyrics). With a song like MY GIRLFRIEND'S BOYFRIEND ISN'T ME, how can you not see that these guys are out to crack you up and rock you at the same time.

I just bought this again, and I'm enjoying it for the fun of it. It's not a classic band (like Led Zeppelin, for example), but they rock extremely well and you'll have fun driving around to their jams!

5 out of 5 stars Musical Group Autograph.......2006-08-10

A great California glamrock band of the eighties era, Autograph was a fantastic group with a fantastic sound. The album "Sign In Please" was some of the best music I believe Steve "Plunk" Plunkett ever recorded. Thats my opinion and I'm stickin to it. The first seven songs straight is one hit after another. The second track "Turn Up The Radio" is the song that drew me to the album back then and once I had the album I wanted to play it over and over non-stop. Every song on this album is great and still deserves air-play even today though most radio stations have done forgotten what Autograph was but I haven't. Glamrock to me was a magical experience back in the mid-eighties and all the groups back then were doing it. The failure of the group Autograph was not the group at all, it was in the marketing which was RCA's failure. If you like guitar roller coasters loud and wild then you'll like Autograph. It's a ride you'll never want to get off.

5 out of 5 stars Hell Yeah, this is what we need.......2006-03-20

Ah... Autograph... I just bought this album.. And jeezlaweez, I am not disappointed at all.. These guys really kicked some butt. Their sound is excellent.. These guys sort of remind me of Firehouse/White Lion a little.. If you love hair metal... Get it, just get it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Journey.......2005-07-17

I just saw Jennifer Cutting perform with the equally incredible Grace Griffith (who does vocals on the album) and the Ocean Orchestra at a store in Hagerstown, MD outside Washington D.C. Jennifer richly deserves all the awards she has won! I, like all in the audience, was blown away! This is truly a transcendent body of work that transports the listener to a magical place in one's soul. I purchased four copies of this CD as Christmas presents for friends.

I also recommend the groups Connemara and The New St. George, and the solo projects of Grace Griffith who, despite the young onset of Parkinson's Disease, has an otherworldly angelic voice and an inspiringly wonderful spirit. In short, listening to this cd will make you feel so good in so many ways. My love, best wishes and gratitude to all involved in this project.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling mystical musical journey.......2005-04-10

This composition is a truly magical mystical hero's journey into haunting and healing melodies and lyrics! From the cover art, the liner notes, quotations, and without question the music one is immediately taken with the first sounds of the waves and the siren's voice calling you to discover what is next on this wonderful composition. I love it and am telling everyone I know to buy this CD immediately! Hurrah for you Jennifer for staying the course with your vision. May you have much success and continue to compose such visionary music. The world needs this kind of healing now more than ever! Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars The Washington Post (published October 15, 2004).......2005-02-14

It took composer and keyboardist Jennifer Cutting seven years and several Atlantic crossings to complete her "Ocean" journey, to meld sea and soul, myth and music into a thoroughly absorbing listening experience. It may take the rest of us nearly as long to fully appreciate the achievement.

No mere folksy, salt-water song cycle, "Ocean: Songs for the Night Sea Journey" is an album-length enchantment, orchestrated with great care, imagination and color. Cutting, well known in folk-rock circles for her tenure with the New St. George, wrote or arranged all of the music, drawing from sources as diverse as J.S. Bach, Gustav Holst and fusion guitarist Steve Morse. Among her own compositions is "Forgiveness," a splendid showcase for special guest Maddy Prior's soulful soprano. But the Steeleye Span vet isn't the only singer who leaves a deep impression.. Grace Griffith brings an angelic voice and yearning emotions to several ballads, beginning with the welcome unearthing of an ancient Irish song, "The Gladdest Breeze." Singers Polly Bolton and Lisa Moscatiello also contribute to the album's haunting charms, while Bulgarian vocalist Tatiana Sarbinska and the Washington-based women's ensemble Slaveya create a spellbinding weave all their own on "Neptune Reel / Woman of the House." Surrounding Cutting is a stellar cast of instrumentalists, many of them based in the Washington area, who share her talent for gracefully incorporating traditional and contemporary influences.

In the liner notes to "Ocean," Cutting writes: "May you lose yourself in its changing waters, only to find yourself again, renewed and restored." It's a wish fulfilled.

Whilst these are great to own on CD it's unfortunate that SPV/Steamhammer has done it so cheaply and with scant care for the originals. On Obsessed By Evil the track listing is completely wrong.Intros which are not separate songs are counted as songs (for example Outbreak Of Evil, a 4 and a half minute song comes up as only the 14 second intro).Furthermore, the last track, Volcanic Slut isn't even on the CD!!! The only reason I worked this out is cos I have the LP. The sooner someone reissues this properly the better.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Get a Better Deal Than This.......2004-10-24

"In the Sign of Evil" and "Obssessed..." are the only albums before Bathory's "Under the Sign of the Black Mark" that can be construed as proto-black metal. The vocals, atmosphere, and attitude in general have to be experienced, for anyone to understand truly what "dark music" means. Alternately despairing, inspiring, enraging...this is hard to top.
"Persecution Mania" steps all over Slayer's "Reign in Blood".
    Look at it that way...

    5 out of 5 stars Germans f*ckin rule.......2004-08-25

They got the thrash down, they got great drumming, and the monstrous voice is a fantastic diabolic touch.A long and dark walk through the world of Sodom.Overlooking this album would be your first mistake as a thrasher.Bobenhagel and Christ Passion-the key tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Three of the Best 80's Thrash Albums.......2004-06-27

While others have disappeared, changed beyond recognition, or just started, Sodom was one of the pioneers and remains true to their roots to this day. One of the "big 3" of German thrash with Kreator and Destruction, Sodom pumps big sound as a 3-piece. Motorhead and Venom influences are quite prevalent on these, their first three albums. The albums were originally released in the following order (and unfortunately they appear in order of production quality in this package--best to worst):

IN THE SIGN OF EVIL (1984) - debut EP. Extremely evil sounding with lots of heavy breathing and grunting. Somewhat juvenile, but a very powerful, fast album that sets the tone for thousands of future death metal bands, most notably Sepultura. The production quality is excellent. Witchhunter's drumming is insane--galloping double-bass with amazing solos at nearly every time change.

OBSESSED BY CRUELTY (1986) - first full length album. This is what should be the band's best album, had it not been for the production. In fact, it could have been one of the best thrash albums of all time. Once again, Witchhunter's drumming is excellent--he traded-in some of the solos for tighter, faster sound. Unfortunately, the drums are the only instrument that even sound half decent. The guitar work is excellent with lots of good hooks, but with the overall tinny sound, the guitar is often lost to a hiss heard over the entire album. The vocals sound distant and were poorly mixed. I can't wait for the day that Sodom returns to the studio to rerecord this masterpiece and do it the justice it deserves.

PERSECUTION MANIA (1987) - this one put Sodom on the map. By most fans, this is their number one album, with the followup "Agent Orange" being a close and very similar sounding second. Produced by the thrashmaster Harris Johns (also known for his work with Helloween, Coroner, Kreator and Voivod). Witchhunter once again tames his drumming for a slightly slower, more consistent tempo and new guitarist Frank Blackfire lends the band a Motorhead-esque full sound that they continue to churn out today. Definitely one of the top ten albums every thrash fan should own. The "Expurse of Sodomy" EP bonus tracks (Sodomy and Lust, Conqueror and My Atonement) typically packaged with "Persecution.." are present and are the pinnacle of this collection, combining the brutally evil early sound with Persecution production quality.

5 out of 5 stars Hardcore Thrash/Death these albums are brutal and they rule!.......2004-04-24

This is a 2-cd set with 2 albums on the first cd and one one the other. The first cd with In the Sign of Evil is the Harder of the two with songs like blasphemer and witching metal sounding like prototype death metal. The songs on these cd's are some of the fastest thrash around, think beneath the remains sepultura style maybe even faster, the only thing that kind of sucks is Tom angelrippers voice back then was kind of weird. His voice is way better now. Trust me, his voice isn't as bad as like Steve Souza's or anything and it won't keep you from enjoying the hell out of these two cd's. 5 stars for some of the fastest hardest thrash around.

5 out of 5 stars TRUE GERMAN BLACK METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-10-17

''IN THE SIGN OF EVIL'' is one of the first TRUE BLACK METAL album's(well an EP)..it may very well be THE FIRST!! because venom even sound a tad corney in comparison to this stuff!!

You wanna hear who DARKTHRONE and 5 million other 90's black metal band's took cue's from..LOOK NO FURTHER!!!

''IN THE SIGN OF EVIL'' is only a EP..but it is one of my fave thing's to listen to..GERNE starting album's are alway's the best!! ONE OF THE BEST!!!!!

''OBSESSED BY CRUELTY'' while not as good is still killer..some of the most INFLUENTIAL druming is on this album!! SODOM sure was ahead of the pack in term's of EXTREMENESS!!

Some of these song's(on obsessed) sound a little to similar to me..but it's not really bothersome!! I like the INTRO to this album the best..VERY ERIE!!!

You get these both for real cheap..so you have no exscuse not to buy!!!!

    BUY OR DIE A POSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    TRUE GERMAN BLACK METAL!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars superb album; his best overall effort by far!.......2005-12-07

Having heard of all of Greg Trooper's recordings, I have to say that this is his best overall effort....

there is absolutely no filler and most of the songs are superb...

admittedly, I have the original issue, so the bonus tracks are not part of this review......

an album worthy of the "desert island" cliche....

    enjoy!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the 4 I recently bought.......2005-04-27

For some reason I recently decided to buy a variety of Early Music CDs from Amazon. I purchased four, including this one, enough to spend $25 for free shipping. Of the four (the others being 'Praetorius: Dances from Terpsichore', 'Music of the Troubadours', and 'Music of the Crusades'), this is my favorite.

I particularly like the song whose title is translated on this page as 'Be sure to drink in moderation' - I don't know enough contemporary Dutch to know if learning to sing this as recorded on this CD would be comprehensible to native speakers of Dutch today, but I certainly hope so, because it would make a terrific ice breaker at parties in Holland.

As for the music, it's hard to imagine that a gaggle of trained geese would sound as good as these Crumhorns. This album really rocks.

5 out of 5 stars a little jewel of Renaissance music.......2004-01-17

If you are looking for an album with all types of renaissance-music from the Low Countries this is the album. Different composers from that time-area and different types of music are recorded. Some songs are very modest, others makes it difficult not to hum with. This cd is a jewel worth listening. Renaissancofiles: this album should be in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Chilly DF Choons.......2006-07-29

This spiky mini-album uncommonly uses strong reverb on the vocals - possibly heresy, but I think it sounds good that way. The actual voice is quite tortured and not so pleasant. The playing is not Meshuggah tight, but still pretty good. And, the sound quality is a little soft. A remaster might give it more punch, even accounting for the Black thing of narrowly chiseled frequencies, little bass and a lack of dynamic range. But in spite of all this grumbling, I'd say this still hits on all cylinders. It's the rare Black Metal that isn't obnoxiously repetitive or self-defeatingly lo-fi. These guys do something (slightly) different in a good way. But note the short run time!

5 out of 5 stars THE CD FROM HELL.......2005-09-17

This is Dark Funeral's first CD plus 2 cover tracks. I haven't heard the cover tracks, so I can only comment on the first 4 track.

You hear the gates open and close behind you in a very evil and gloomy sounding way on the intro(not plain and boring like on Deicide's debut album) and then it hits you like a volcanic erruption. The vocals are not cheap shrieks, there are multiple tones of treble/mid/bass in the vocals, and his style is something I have never heard before or after I heard this. The guitars sound a bit like that of the band Dissection (which I like very much), but the vocals are not whiney like Dissection's vocalist. These are the most terrifying vocals you will ever hear, actually sounds demonic, not like some dumb joke like the band Immortal's vocalist puts forth (I used to like Immortal, I don't hate them or their music, I just can't take it seriously anymore (Black Metal is a serious genre, when I want comedy I listen to Mr.Bungle). Anyway, if you need a totally brutal Black Metal CD that can live in your CD player instead of gathering dust, then this one is what you are looking for. I can listen to this CD all day non-stop and still not get bored of it.

      "SAAAAAAYYYTAAAAAAN"......

      5 out of 5 stars Brutal!!.......2003-06-26

All i can say is that this is one of the most brutal black metal bands ever!!Enry sond is fast, brutal, satanic. I LOVE IT. Its a remastered version of their first cd. After this, a black metal band that will go down in history was created. buy this if your a black metal fan

5 out of 5 stars Brutal, evil black metal.......2003-04-17

This is a re-release of Dark Funeral's first CD with 2 bonus cover songs added on. Basically, if you like brutal, violent, fast black metal like Marduk you will probably like this. The production on this CD is surprisingly good considering it was released at a time when Dark Funeral was relatively poor. Anyways, if you are a true black metal fan you probably already own this so I won't say anything more except BUY THIS! Oh yeah and the best song is "In the Sign of the Horns". Hail Black Metal
