Chess is a musical that sounds like it shouldn't work but instead succeeds surprisingly well. This is the original concept album that was recorded before the musical was staged in London. Chess is the story of a love triangle told against the backdrop of an international chess tournament during the height of the cold war. The composers are Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (the Bs in ABBA) and the lyrics are by Tim Rice, who supplied the words for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, as well as Disney's Aladdin (with Howard Ashman), The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. The six-member cast does a beautiful job with the songs, which are a combination of ballads, rock, and operatic choruses. Murray Head's version of "One Night in Bangkok" became a surprise hit in the mid-'80s and it still turns up on the turntables in dance clubs around the world. --Michael Simmons

And on that basis alone, you've got to cut it some slack. Fortunately, not all that much slack turns out to be necessary.

While "Chess" may be a document of an era that no longer exists, there's a lot more going on than the surface metaphor. It holds up very well indeed. When it aims for humor, it generally succeeds, and likewise when it aims to devastate. What more can you ask for?

`Chess' is a musical that should be counted among the best of what the 1980-is had produced: side by side with `Cats', `The Phantom of the Opera', `Les Miserables' or `Miss Saigon'. The score as heard on this concept album, written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (formerly of ABBA) and with the exceptional lyrics written by Tim Rice, stand proof to this. And yet, due to various reasons, like the changing of the director half way through London staging; a heavy rewrite for Broadway and a pan review from Frank Ritch (a.k.a. `The Butcher of Broadway'), `Chess' seems to be unjustly neglected.

This concept album is the main reason why the show has so many ardent fans until this day. Tim Rice wanted to write the show with the main plot revolving around chess for years and after his long time partner Andrew Lloyd Webber remained uninterested, he found the new collaborators in Ulvaeus and Andersson. The subject matter follows two international chess players in a championship, a Russian (Tommy Körberg) and an American (Murray Head) and a woman called Florence (Elaine Paige) who is a manager to the American but falls in love with the Russian. The story also draws a parallel between the game of chess and the cold war/real life situations.

This concept album was recorded in 1984, two years before the original London production took place. As the authors noted in the accompanying booklet, it was a work in progress and thusly the story is not quite readable here from the musical numbers alone. Despite that fact (which is amended by the synopsis included in the booklet), this album remains a winner. The score (played here by the London Symphonic Orchestra) itself makes an intriguing bland of the famous ABBA sound, the classical; the rock and the pop enhanced by the orchestral solo passages and the strong choral parts. The lush orchestrations add an epic touch to it and on the whole it is melodic and hummable, packed with great tunes. Some of the songs achieved huge success outside the musical: `I know him so well', a duet between Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, held the number one spot on the UK singles charts for 4 weeks in February 1985 and won Ivor Novello Award as the Best Selling Single; Murray Head's `One night in Bangkok' became one of the biggest dance hits of its time, often heard today. Some other notable tunes include `The Anthem' (Russian's deliberation on his homeland); the soaring rock songs `Where I want to be' and `Pity the child' (in the former, the Russian reflects upon his life under the spotlight; in the latter, the American ponders about his own unhappy childhood) or the gentle `Heaven help my heart' (in which Florence weighs up her relationship with the Russian).

A special reference must be made to Tim Rice's excellent lyrics. With `Chess' he managed to keep up to the high standards he set himself in `Jesus Christ Superstar' and Evita'. Again in this case he shows he is a lyrical wizard, with his familiar cynical touch. `The story of chess', in which he gives a history of the game in a couple of crafty verses, is a pure masterpiece. The same can be said of the song `I know him so well', where the two women reexamine their relationship with the same man. As a whole, `Chess' owes a lot of its appeal to Tim Rice's written word.

The cast on this album ranks the high standard of the material. The principal parts (sung by Elaine Paige, Tommy Körberg and Murray Head) are delivered in a strong and impeccable fashion.

This 2-disc edition comes with a booklet containing a note from the authors, a text about chess, a full synopsis and a libretto, together with the photos of the principal singers.

Anyone interested in the modern musical theatre should find `Chess' to be a great score with great lyrics, which should be enough to satisfy any aficionado.

I love "Chess"! I still remember the first time I heard the single "One Night in Bangkok" on my car radio. I thought it was so unusual and so very cool, so I tracked down the album and bought it. Then I taped it onto a cassette, which is what I've been listening to for years, so I finally broke down and got it on CD. Of course, it's on my iPod now. I've seen the musical, and I loved that, too.

I love this show! That said, I do not care for this version of it. The inclusion of the word "concept" in the title means it is just that. This was, thankfully, not the final version of the show that would later spawn the hit song, "One Night In Bangkok".

With most Broadway musicals, the musical numbers tell the basic story of the show. If you listen to the recordings of Phantom, Mama Mia, Beauty and the Beast, you can discern the basic storyline of the show. Listening to this particular recording of Chess, though, will leave you wondering "What was that?" The Broadway arrival of Chess saw a much needed reworking of the storyline and arrangement of the musical numbers. This recording seems too much like a mish-mash of songs that don't really relate to each other.

For musical fanatics (like myself), I say "yes, you should have this recording in your collection", if only to understand how much work went into the show before it opened on Broadway.

If you are only buying the album because of "One Night In Bangkok", purchase the Broadway recording instead; you'll be much happier with the performance by Phillip Casnoff rather than Murray Head.

Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

St. Paul's Cathedral ImpressiveCollection of Anglican Hymns.......2007-01-24

St. Paul's Cathdral is the second largest cathedral church in the basilican style, exceeded only by St. Peter's Rome. New York City's St. John the Divine is larger than St. Paul's, but with decidely gothic elements. All three cathedrals have fine choirs, but St. Paul's and St. John's continue the noble and unique sound of boys and men in the English tradition. St. Paul's great organ is one of the world's finest, with a decay of seven seconds. The great hymns are all here, conducted by John Scott, only recently appointed organist of St. Thomas' Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City. This is a recording will a be prized addition to your library of choral music. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent Cathedral Organ & Choral .......2006-02-24

This selection of recordings by The Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral contains pieces representative of traditional Anglican musical liturgy. The technical aspects of this production on compact disk seem to be outstanding, but beware that the original recordings were in some cases less than stellar. Another reviewer points out that on some tracks the lyrics sung by the choir are overwhelmed by the superb organ playing, which no doubt occurred due to inadequate microphone placement during the recording sessions. That said, I nevertheless rate this presentation of the St. Paul's Choir highly. It provides a mixture of musical types. In addition to the choir, the CD presents the work of four organists, including a marvelous organ solo, as well as several pieces sung a cappella by the choir and its boy treble soloists. I especially recommend this choir's rendetion of Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere," which features the voices of two boy trebles, a boy alto and a bass, which yeilds a mesmerizing experience. Unless one is acquiring full sets of the St. Paul's Choir's music, this compact disk should delight anyone interested in traditional cathedral organ and choral music.

LACK OF DICTION?!!!.......2003-11-12

Obviously the individual who wrote the review including the "marred by lack of diction" remark is not too familiar with the traditional boychoir sound. I am moved to sickness that they were so openly compared with the sound of the all-too-familiar MTC. THOSE WERE ADULTS!!! These are boys! Boys cannot give the kind of sound of the MTC because their voices are not developed enough. The greatest hope a boychoir has of wowing audiences is in their contrast in dynamics. They model this beautiffully in their acapella pieces. In their accompanied pieces, I feel they hold their own above the (sometimes blearing) organ.
Know the genre a little better before you slander a great performance.

The singing is beautiful, melodious and full of harmony. The organ would make Bach proud.

But the lyrics do not stand out. In fact, they are obliterated by the surrounding melodies.

I hate to do this, but I am comparing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. These little boys would learn from them.

Be Thoy My Vision CD.......2007-02-19

My husband sang many of these John Rutter compositions with his church choir, and this CD is perfect since the choir is directed by Rutter, singing his own music. If you love religious music, this will bring tears to your eyes, the choir is "that" perfect.

Really good, but don't listen to it all at once........2007-01-07

I really liked this CD. It really showcases Rutter's knack for religious choral music. Perhaps it helps that I have sung some of his stuff with various groups. However, as with any similar compiliation, the composer's sameness of style and motif becomes apparent. This repetition can become boring on the third or fourth listening. On the other hand, this makes a great reference tool for any choral director or performer. Buy it, however, it's worth it, but don't listen to it all at once.

A must for choral music fans.......2006-09-19

Simply fabulous, 10/10. These are all Rutter-composed pieces, directed by Rutter himself. If you have any interest in religious choral music at all, you must get this album! One of the highlights of my musical life was attending a concert of a University of Maryland choir in which my mom sang, that featured Rutter as a guest conductor. Listening to this album is almost as good! ;-) There are too many good pieces to start naming all of my favorites, but these are some of the best known ones: "Open Thou Mine Eyes", "A Gaelic Blessing", "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "As the Bridegroom to His Chosen", "For the Beauty of the Earth", and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You".

An outstanding collection of Rutter's hymns.......2005-11-22

I sought a recording of Rutter's beautiful hymn, "Wings of the Morning", after we sang this lovely tune in church and this was the only CD I could find that contained it.

This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.

Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.

While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.

The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.

If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.

Rounds out the edges..........2007-01-05

Wow, a lot of reviewers have had a lot to say about this one. Well, I'm not going to say a lot because so much has already been said, just know that as far as scores go, this is one of the best, and even though I really wanted another hard rock/techno infused powerhouse of an album, the few songs provided by Pale 3 and Juno Reactor are enough to satisfy me (In My Head is just freaking awesome). Don Davis is genius here and provides a beautifully written piece of work that will burrow itself inside your head and stay with you. The final track Navras is reason enough to own this perfect compliment to a highly regarded franchise and serves as a nice way to round out this trilogy, not only of film but of music.

Unique, Original, Definitive!.......2006-08-18

There is a lot to rave about regarding Don Davis' work on the Matrix scores, but the clearest and most appropriate compliment would be to attest to their uniqueness. He did not find the right sound for the film; he invented a completely new sound. That this new sound was also the right sound--the only right sound--is what beckons the listener to pay attention. This is not music for every occasion; it want lull your baby to sleep. But when the moment is right, and you are in the right mood, it is an experience like no other.

Whereas the score to Reloaded was a techno-feat that was pure fun, this score establishes deeper orchestral roots that take it to a more refined, emotional level. Listen to the many places to which the listener travels: the frenetic chaos of the action cues, the solemnity of the elegies, the operatic tidal wave of the full chorus, and the sublimity of the film's denouement. Each is united into a unique and altogether representative symphony that has come not just to underline the Matrix universe but to utterly define it.

Three cheers for Don Davis, with the unavoidable question: why don't you score more films?

Perfection!.......2006-04-02

This score is absolutely astounding in every way. To say that it's musically complex is an understatement - it's often difficult and intricate to such a level that hasn't been seen much before or to such an extent - but unlike a lot of other complex and dissonant works, Revolutions is also so enjoyable and exciting thanks to it's ongoing energy and the sheer perfection of the music itself. Davis' tone for this movie and for the whole franchise has been spot on, which in itself is difficult to achieve, however, whereas the previous two scores incorporated a lot of techno riffs and beats, Revolutions thankfully allocates far more time to the orchestral elements, with only a few cues incorporating techno. I think this was wise; whereas in the first two movies, the techno element helped to contribute to that overall `cool' and `stylish' feel, by the time of the third movie, I feel the whole shiny black leather and cool shades image was quickly becoming cheesy and satirised and a back to basics, orchestral approach was far more appropriate.

Not that Davis delivered anything basic, far from it! As already mentioned the level of musical complexity is impressive and as it is, sounds unlike scores you may have heard before, a perfect and distinct sound for a distinct franchise. The tone here is generally dissonant and harsh with two predominant choirs in the music, strings and brass, with warm woodwinds pushed right into the background except for a few choice moments. This, along with the actual nature of the music, helps to create a sense of conflict between the two, which obviously suits the movie.

Despite its atonality, Revolutions is also often surprisingly melodic and unexpectedly produces some of the finest examples in film music of beautiful, uplifting and majestic moments. The love theme hinted at in Matrix Reloaded is given the full treatment here in Trinity Definitely and it is stunning - it's simple but achingly beautiful and effective and it's hard to imagine anything else fitting the scene so perfectly. Revolutions also gives the best rendition of the Main Titles so far with the now famous brass crescendo, wave effect perfectly complimented by the orchestration and leading into an exciting rhythm and chord progression. This alternating brass effect is such a neat and clever little motif and perfectly encapsulates the dreamy, warped sense of reality theme of the movie(s) - we're so used to the idea of a memorable melody or hook defining a franchise or representing the main themes and characters that I find it refreshing that such a simple technique can have exactly the same effect.

However, it is the action cues that impress the most and there are lots of them. It's very rare that you can say music is genuinely thrilling and exhilarating but from the exciting going to war cue Men in Metal right through to the score's epic highlight Neodammerung, the score never lets up in its energy, excitement and invention - the only other score I can think of that contains so many action cues but manages to keep them all fresh and exhilarating is Shearmur's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and it must be so difficult to achieve but Davis manages it here seemingly effortlessly. Niobe's Run is exciting and frightening and gives the sense of being chased; Moribund Mifune is great `race against time' music; Saw Bitch Workhorse is un-relentlessly dissonant building to an almighty crescendo and Neodammerung is operatic and very classical sounding, with the truly immense choir singing over a simple chord progression and layered with timpani, constantly swirling strings and high woodwinds and the rest of the orchestra playing at top volume - it's breathless, absolutely perfect for the movie's big showdown and gives way to some great moments of the brass motif. It all ends with the glorious Spirit of the Universe, a wonderfully pastoral and uplifting contrast to all that's preceded it and gives a wonderful sense of a new dawn in utopia.

It's surprising just how good this score is, every cue perfectly compliments and augments the scenes they are accompanying whilst still being so enjoyable to listen to away from the movie - Davis manages to maintain this superior level of writing at all times with hardly any dull moments (at least in the fully orchestral cues anyway). The Matrix Revolutions is certainly an important achievement in film scoring not to mention Davis' career and is one of the best examples of modern action scoring if not one of the best in the genre, it's thrilling and always impressive, a master class in counterpoint, orchestration and musical development and above all, a highly enjoyable listen. Perfection.

Breathtaking.......2005-01-12

While opinions on the movie of the same name are all over the map, one thing everyone agrees on is the incredible musical score to "The Matrix Revolutions" (warning: This review contains spoilers to the movie, so read with caution)

The Matrix Revolutions main title: The always haunting musical opening to the movie. Very good

The trainman cometh: Starts off gentle and happy, with Neo talking to Sati and her family. Calm, relaxing music plays while they talk, before beats start to come in, transfering to a frantic chase that goes along at breakneck speed in a fast beat.

Tetsujin: A quiet start with a foreboding Asian beat hints that its not all fun and games here. After a quick Asian beat down, we get some quiet harp and bean shakers. And then it's an all out war as electronic beats pulse while our heroes blast the oposition to smithereens.

In my Head: The only song on this track (thank goodness), this is actually quite catchy. I'll never be a fan of rock n roll, but this track is quite fun. Heavy on electronic insturments and only mild vocals, its a memorable song.

The road to sourceville: A quiet start shattered by a fast vocal, followed by quiet happy music as Neo is reunited with Trinity, then slow atmosphere while they visit the oracle for the last time.

Men in Metal: As the battle draws ever nearer, the war insturments (drums and such) begin to play as the soldiers prepare for the inevitable battle. A rousing speach gives them strength. This track is heavy on preparation music, and uses it well.

Niobies run: Quiet and atmospheric as Niobie and the others head closer to the tunnel, the music indicating the uneasiness as they try to slip past the sentinels. But of course they get spotted. Then its an all out frantic race as they zoom deep into the earth to try and escape with thier lives. In the Zion dock there's a few seconds of final preparation before the grim fighting begins. This track is heavy on "race for your life!" music.

Woman can drive: Things get desperate as the battle to save Zion continues. Niobie struggles to pilot the hammer to safety while being attacked non-stop. This track features more frantic racing and fighting music with drum beats.

Morbid Mifune: Pure war. This track excellently captures the horror and the hopelessness of the dock battle. The humans are doomed, but they keep fighting. With quick military beats and haunting vocals, this is a standout track. My favorite moment begins when the music is loud and filled with military beats as we see Mifune fighting for his life. As the kid tries to get ammo to him, the music truly shows how hopeless everything is, while also showing the will to keep fighting and not give up. A quiet military beat follows with the death of Mifune.

Kidfried: Thundering blasts as the Hammer closes in on Zion, followed by haunting vocals, and a standout moment where the Hammer zooms into Zion, where the music is heavy and quick and the vocals compete with quick beats as the end of the frantic race is in sight. Then all is quiet and calm as the first battle is won.

Saw B***h workhorse (what an odd name): The gloom of the real world shows itself as Neo and Trinity head towards the machine city. When they reach it's borders, heavy beats and ominous vocals give the feeling on huge bemoths guarding its borders. Yet hope remains among the chaos as we witness the wonder of Neo's power. A strong and gloomy (yet hopeful) track.

Trinity definitly: Out of all the tracks in all the matrix movies, this one stands out among the others. Its a pure musical track, with no electronic enhancments, no fancy beats, nothing. It's simply sad, quiet orchestra music. As Trinity lies dying within the Logos, Don Davis does a standout job of conveying the sadness of her death. I actually cried a little when I first heard this one because it's so sad, yet at the same time, dignified. It has an identity all its own because its so different from the music we've heard before. A standout track.

Neodammerung: If there was ever a contest to determine the best one on one fight music ever made, this would be in the top three. It's the apacolypse mixed in with heavy dramatic beats as two foes fight to the death, each carrying incredible power. You can really feel the dramatic wieght contanined within each beat as Neo and Smith face each other for the final time. The haunting vocals adds so much to the experience that its impossible to imagine the music withought them. When the two take to the skies, the music increases in drama and epic scope as the two fight high above the ground. Then theres the final moment where the two head straight towards each other, readying for the final blow that will determine the fight. I get goosebumps every time I hear it.

Why Mr. Anderson?: As Smith stands over the beaten Neo, he asks him why he does it. The music is sad and curious. The end is near. We can feel that Neo is beaten and how exhausted he is. A final brief fight commences before Smiths raw power and fury shows itself through quick and hard beats. Then the music swells in triumph as Smith is finally defeated before quietly drifting into nothing as "it is done"

Spirit of the universe: Happiness is mingled with sadness in this track. Everything is happy, yet the sad vocals appear when Neo's body is taken away. Then the music slowly swells upwards as the end arrives. Everything is over and finished. Then the music finally swells one last time as the sun rises in a big happy moment.

Navras: Fantastic vocals (male and female) really define this track as just about every insturment comes into play here. Drums, australian digery doos, pianos, electronic beats, and flute music comes into play for one grand finale of music. Truley stunning, and tied with Neodammerung as best track on the CD.

In my humble opinion, the third matrix movie has the best music of the entire trilogy. It's hard edgy no-nonsense action music, untainted by unnecessary songs. It's all insturmental and hard hitting, making it a truley magnificant soundtrack that I listen to almost everyday. A truly worthy buy.

I have not bought this CD yet... and I am not really a matrix fan however, my boyfriend is. On this cd, the song Navras made my boyfriend cry because of all the emotion that song brings. It is truely a good sound track and I cant wait to get it for him for christmas. If you love hard beats and soft strings this is the CD for you!

I have been looking for this CD for years!! Our family had a Shaw Chorale LP which contained almost all the songs on this CD. We had a number of excellent holiday albums and played all of them often, but we wore the Shaw Chorale album out! Not only are the musical renditions excellent and very similar to earlier Shaw recordings, the nostalgia evoked for this listener is incomparable!

I received this recording on cassette from a choral teacher, and played it so often that I wore it out! I especially appreciate the purity of sound and the arrangements in this recording. Lovers of choral music will feel as though "Songs of Angels" brings them a taste of heaven!

Alas that Robert Shaw is no longer with us. Throughout his long and varied career he gave us choral music with exactness,good pacing,and proper execution though not all musicologists would chose his renditions.
In "Songs of Angels" recorded in 1994 he shows us that even in later years he just kept going and going. Giving us stellar performances of masterpieces such as "Elijah","The Creation" and other large choral works. Yet in this album he shows the same attention to detail and
enraptures us with that special beauty of tone and ensemble which was
was to be Shaw's watermark on his life's offering.

The Most Beautiful Sounds I Have Ever Heard.......2003-02-04

A fluid and seamless piece of heaven that transcends all classical and holiday music. This is an OUTSTANDING non-traditional Holiday CD!!! Many voices come together as one in these enchanting verses sung in languages other than English. It is just enough language mix to appease and intrigue the soul but not too much so that the listener does not understand the lyrics. For example, the English verse is sung then a verse in German and then back to English. Emmanuel is written this way. Other languages include French (Angels we Have Heard on High) and even Catalan which is a dialect of Spain.

Several of the songs were not traditional Holiday songs (at least for my generation), yet they were intriguing to learn and now I feel I know them just like the traditional ones. This CD offers a healthy mix of traditional and non-traditional songs on this CD.

If you can picture the most beautiful sounds you have ever heard you can come close to the joy this CD will bring you. It is February and I can't stop listening to it. You will not regret purchasing it&the only regret you may have is not buying all of Robert Shaw's holiday CDs.

This recording of the Cambridge Singers has them recording pieces composed by their own director, John Rutter. The Gloria is Rutter's version of a standard piece of liturgical music, representing influences ancient and modern. This was recorded at in 1984, with the City of London Sinfonia and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble collaborating.

--Music--
The Gloria is a piece in three movements. The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble performs with the Cambridge Singers and soloists Mary Seers, Mary Hitch, and Caroline Ashton. This includes organ music and timpani/percussion. The Gloria is one of Rutter's earliest works, written as a commissioned piece for an American group (Voices of Mel Olson, Omaha, Nebraska). The three movements are reminiscent of standard symphonic structure. The outer movements are more boisterous ('make a joyful noise unto the Lord'), whereas the middle movement is more introspective and subdued.

The other pieces included here are anthems, bright and cheery, fully orchestrated and performed with spirit. There are three pieces that are a capella, reflecting Rutter's and the Cambridge Singers' passion for this medium.

The notes include an introduction to the CD by Rutter describing some of the influences and expressions in his composition. Lyrics are included, and where the original is in Latin, an English translation is provided. There is no listing of the performers of the Cambridge Singers, no description of the group, nor biographical information about John Rutter.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

This stuff is tacky. John Rutter's compositions are notorious among real musicians for being cheap and sentimental. His anthems are the church-music equivalent of the Big Mac, which has sold billions and billions of copies, but which neither nourishes nor satisfies. The music quickly bores the serious musician and leaves him with a tune he wishes he could get out of his head. If you like Rutter's music, go to it; he's produced a bevy of CDs to keep you happy. But don't mistake it for real music. Rutter is an unabashed sellout who's made a pretty penny pandering to people's basest musical tastes.

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

How can you call these "Hymns".......2006-08-05

Not to harp on anyone here, but it's obvious that none of you grew up in a church or environment that had a good choir. I know, a Hymn is a genre of music, but a recording of a hymn isn't one if it doesn't contain HARMONY. If they're a "choir," then why don't the tenors sing a different note than the sopranos, altos, and basses? The organist is quite good, I'll admit, but you're wasting your time if you're looking for a good recording of these beautiful songs that were COMPOSED with harmony, not unison. If they want to sing in unison like this, they need to be stripped of their "choir" status and simply be called a "group."

wonderful collection of magnificent music.......2006-01-18

Most everything on this CD is very well done. The recording environment might have been less than perfect, but that shouldn't dimish one's enjoyment very much. Most of the arrangements are very traditional, with the notable exception of Amazing Grace, which though it isn't terrible, it isn't very good either. Some songs had verses removed, which is understandable, though it was poorly done in Eternal Father, Strong to Save -- they did verse 1 ("Eternal Father"), then they skipped(!!!) verse 2 ("O Christ, the Lord") and went on to the final verses ("Holy Spirit" and "O Trinity") -- which is skipping Someone important! However, outside of that, it was excellent.

If you like sacred music, or hymns, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you're a Christian, you should enjoy this as well, no matter your taste in music (and you might just learn to like hymns as well!). It is a well-chosen set of some of the most magnificent, God-honoring music of all time, done is a mostly very traditional manner, and it was done well.

Flawed but enjoyable.......2005-04-15

The huge size and reverberating acoustics of Washington National Cathedral make it difficult to hear any kind of live choral performance clearly, even if you're sitting in the front rows in the nave. The Cathedral Choral Society is handicapped by having to record in this acoustically mushy space, and it shows in this CD, often creating an uneven balance between the organ and the chorus as noted by other reviewers. The repertoire is well-chosen, but the quality of the arrangements is uneven. Too often, the chorus seems to be singing in unison right out of the Hymnal, like any parish church choir at an ordinary Sunday service. Certain pieces do suggest the heights which the Society is capable of attaining. But the group never achieves the splendor that the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys displays every Sunday morning. Just when the Society seems to be getting there, the conductor pulls them back. And the shrill folk arrangement of "Amazing Grace" will have you covering your ears as the sopranos shriek clumsily, confusing volume with fervor.

This is not a review. I just have a question. Does "Hymns through the Centuries" contain the hymn "It is Well with my Soul?" Thanks.

A must own for classic church music lovers.......2002-02-16

I purchased this CD just based on the titles and am very glad I did. There are only two downsides to the album. First is the fact that there isn't a companion CD with 26 more hymns! Second is picky, but I do agree with another rater that the organ could have been a little louder related to the singing. Hope you enjoy listening!
