The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

I heartily recommend the purchase of this exalted collection of music from the Elizabethan coronation ceremonies of 1953. The music represents an outstanding selection of the music of English christendom at the mid-20th Century. The performance quality of a variety of ensembles are commensurate with the quality of the selections themselves.

I purchased this CD at the Tower of London gift shop while on a trip to England a few years ago. This album is superb, with beautiful digital re-recordings of the music from Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. I have listened to it countless times. This wonderful music reminds me of the great heritage we in America share with Great Britain. Breathtaking, inspiring and uplifting, this album will not disappoint.

One of the Greatest Ceremonies the World's Seen.......2002-01-14

The Coronation of HM Elizabeth II in June 1953 was one of the most spectacular public events the world has seen before or since. At the Queen's request, the Coronation was televised live on the BBC, the first coronation to receive such treatment. This is not a recording of the actual Coronation Service itself, but rather a recording, made in Westminster Abbey, of the actual music (with much of the same arrangements) that was used at the Coronation.

You will not be disappointed with this album!

Grand and Glorious.......2001-08-15

This CD contains some of the most beautiful music ever written. The music performed at Queen Elizabeth's 1953 coronation was recorded in 1993 and released on CD. If you like high church music and you have an appreciation for what was probably one of the most spectacular public pageants of the 20th Century, you will love this CD.

Some excellent tracks........2000-08-12

With twenty-nine national anthems and John Williams' "Olympic Theme", this album offers a reasonable variety of anthems. (Curiously, there is nothing from the USSR/CIS/Russia!) The recording quality is excellent. The interpretation of the anthems seems to attempt to give an 'appropriate' national flavour to each one. This does not always seem to work. For example, China's "Ch'i Lai!" sounds more like incidental music than a national anthem. There is an interesting rendition of France's "La Marseillaise". While it lacks the 'big' sound usually associated with this anthem, it is distinctive - and is probably a quite good representation of how it might have sounded back in 1792. If, however, you prefer the 'big' sound this version will be a disappointment. Argentina's "Sean eternos los laurales", Canada's "O! Canada" and John Williams' "Olympic Theme" are excellent, but Belgium's "La Brabanconne/Het Belgisch Volkslied" is disappointing and dirge-like. The anthems are performed by a chamber orchestra and consequently have neither the 'big' sound of a full orchestra, nor the martial sound of a military band. The album takes a distinctive approach to the anthems. Whether this approach works is ultimately a matter of personal taste. If you enjoy the more intimate sound of a chamber orchestra, this album will probably be to your taste.

For the Thalberg Completist or Collector of Liszt Rarities.......2007-08-02

"The greatest interest... will be without question the simultaneous appearance of two talents whose rivalry at this time agitates the musical world, and is like the indecisive balance between Rome and Carthage. Messrs. Liszt and Thalberg will take turns at the piano" - an advertisement in the Gazette Musicale on March 26, 1837.

The famous duel between Liszt and Thalberg, or "Rome" and "Carthage," has spawned legendary anecdotes and quotations about the two pianist-composers. Not all of it is true, and the famous Liszt biographer, Alan Walker, sheds light on the truth of the matter: "There is nothing here to suggest that Liszt saw in Thalberg a rival. Least of all did he 'rush back to Paris, nostrils dilated, to defend his crown,' as one modern journalist has put it." But when Liszt's mistress, Marie d'Agoult, used his name to write disparaging remarks about Thalberg's music, a war of the press began, sides were drawn, and a "battle" between the two pianists was inevitable. Thalberg and Liszt performed their own recitals in Paris, both taking advantage of the Parisian fervor, and eventually collided in a musical duel under Princess Belgiojoso's roof. This recording presents an almost historically accurate program of what was played during the evening of the duel. I say "almost" because Liszt's "Benediction de Dieu dans la solitude" had not yet been composed. While Mayer's interpretation of the Benediction is acceptable, demonstrating a balance of passion and judicious touch, I don't know why it was tacked on.

Both in his own concerts and in the famous duel, Liszt showcased his powers with the devilish Fantasy on Pacini's "Niobe" and the remarkable transcription of Weber's Konzertstück in F minor. I am only familiar with Leslie Howard's renditions of these pieces, but Steven Mayer is decent in his performance. He creates veritable excitement out of the Niobe Fantasy and reveals deep insight into Weber's Konzertstück. The Konzertstück, in particular, covers an incredible range of emotions, from the greatest sorrow and longing to ecstatic hope and jubilance. Thalberg's two war-horses, the Fantasy on Rossini's "Moise" and Fantasia on "God Save the Queen," are exquisite examples of Thalberg's art. Unfortunately, Mayer's execution of the Moise Fantasy is weak and uneven. In the first half of the piece his phrasing is clumsy, his emotions are absent, and his tempo is excessively fast. This is not the best exhibition of Thalberg's finest piano fantasy, and I would implore the curious to seek out Francesco Nicolosi's divine performance here: (Fantasias on Operas By Rossini). However, you will not find the Fantasia on "God Save the Queen" anywhere else, and as a Thalberg completist, that was the primary reason I bought this CD. The Fantasia is brilliant and guilty of melodious and flashy embellishment; it's pure fun.

Bottom line: There are some mighty enticing Liszt rarities here, and I can vouch for the Weber Konzertstück as a composition worthy of revival. But if you are genuinely interested in the music of Thalberg, I must whole-heartedly suggest Francesco Nicolosi's interpretations, instead; he is head of the Thalberg International Study Center, an accomplished pianist, and a real champion of Thalberg's music.

Battle of the salon stars.......2001-02-09

This is an interesting recreation of a competition between two of the foremost European pianists of the mid-19th century. All of the selections are showcases for each performer's reputed strengths, as well as making for rewarding listening. Stephen Mayer does a wonderful job imagining the styles of Liszt and Thalberg. The Liszt selections are dramatic; while the Thalberg pieces are more cultured-sounding, almost limpid. Comparing them is a case of apples and oranges, here as it was at the time, so the verdict remain: "a tie".

Good News.......2000-09-14

This recording presents new pieces that are very difficult to play and to find in other recordings. I was acquainted to Mr. Thalberg through this recording. This recording has some special points to be considered : 1st - If you don't know Thalberg, buy it.... 2nd - There is a Webern piece that is very good too.

Liszt's Benediction de Dieu dans La Solitud has a beautifull sound here.

Large collection for the price, but not perfect.......2006-07-30

As with these sorts of all-inclusive collections, there are issues to be had with 'National Anthems of the World' as performed by the Swarovski Orchestra. Primary--to me--is that these performances and arrangements come off as being rather sterile and bland, though it's perhaps not surprising since I doubt very much that most of the nationalities of the nations represented here have citizens actually in the Swarovski Orchestra. There's little of the passion that a national band or orchestra would have in playing their own nation's anthem, much like listening to a generic studio band play play a collection of college fight songs (and there ARE CDs of those out for sale as well).

That said, this 2-disc CD set does offer a wide spectrum of national anthems, though it does a far better job of covering European nations more so than any other region. For instance, Central America is poorly represented in this collection as is Africa which, aside from Cameroon, the heart of that continent is conspicuously ill-depicted. But the biggest omission is China; neither the mainland or Taiwanese anthems are included in this set. Considering that The People's Republic of China is the most populous nation on earth, as well as a global political and economic force to be reckoned with, even in 1996 (this CD set dates from 2004, but at least one online database list the contents from the mid-1990s), this is a glaring oversight in my opinion.

The final gripe deals with the included documentation. Each of these anthems DO have titles to them, none of which the producers of this collection ever bother to mention and provide. One has to go to Wikipedia or some other resource to look up the actual name of the anthems included here. This is information that is relatively cheap to research and out of courtesy to the consumer should've been provided for this set, especially since this collection has been around in some form for over a decade already.

For the money, it's a fairly good buy for those who want a collection of national anthems. But the producers could've done a better job of compiling the contents of this collection, and what music there is would've certainly benefitted from a bit more impassioned play.

excellent selection & quality sound.......2005-08-27

Swarovski Orchestra did an excellent job in this compilation. I work in Foreign Service & I use this CD to play US anthem & the host country anthem during events. Unlike other compilations which shorten the pieces, this offers full-length pieces saving me from embarrassment.
