This soundtrack to City of Angels has a mighty tall order to fill. The film is a remake of Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire, and the German director is known for his effective use of music. But where Wenders can call on his friends such as R.E.M. and Elvis Costello to contribute songs, City of Angels feels more like a marketing device. No less than half the selections are by Warner Bros. artists, including some new music by Alanis Morissette, her first since Jagged Little Pill. That song, "Uninvited," is the album's highlight, a restrained modal ballad in the mode of Zeppelin's "Kashmir." The rest alternates between other female stars such as Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan and bluesy selections from Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and Eric Clapton. --Steven Mirkin

City of Angels Soundtrack.......2006-06-25
Items were shipped within two days, and I loved the music from the movie.
An average soundtrack resting on the shoulders of one masterpiece..........2006-04-27
Now don't be so quick to hate based on my title here...I do love this soundtrack, but what I mean is that you have one BRILLIANT track and then an album of good tracks...I think the major problem was placing this BRILLIANT track in second place, for placing it on the outset of the album only sets you up for dissapointment. Yes, this track is 'Uninvited' by Alanis Morissette, which is haunting, bewitching and mezmerizing to say the least. Alanis, a wonderfully talented singer at that, puts together her finest piece of music ever and manages to real you in from the first word to the last, and that musical arangment, I mean come on...it's beautiful, eerie and enchanting all at the same time, and when it all breaks down towards the end after she utters the word "slide" and the violins get violent almost it's just one of my favorite pieces of music let alone the vocal masterclass that it is. So there you have it, the biggest reason to purchase this album...and it's a great reason, but the fact that it's the only reason stands to reitterate my opening comment. I mean, there are other good or even great songs like 'Iris' which was radio ready almost as soon as it was recorded, and the song itself is a beautiful and inspired song, one of the Goo Goo Dolls best efforts, and Sarah McLachlan, who possesses one of the most angelic voices ever, delivers a solid track 'Angel' and even Paula Cole delivers with 'Feelin Love' and The Jimi Hendrix instrumental 'Red House' but none of these tracks even come close to touching the power in 'Uninvited'. Some of the songs are good but nothing spectacular, much like the opener 'If God Will Send His Angels' by the glorious U2 and I guess maybe I expect too much but this song just left me saying "Is this for real?" It could have, no let me rephrase that, SHOULD have been much better. Eric Clapton, a genious that he is, delivers one of the most annoying tracks here, I think mainly because it drags on for over 7 minutes! And then there are tracks that hurt to listen to, like Peter Gabriel's 'I Grieve' which is ear-splitting terrible. At least Gabriel Yared's score is just beautiful. So, the album is not a complete let down, but it just had huge shoes to fill beings that one of the greatest songs of all time had graced the track listing...Now they could have followed in Titanics footsteps and released a score only with Alanis adding her masterpiece, and then maybe this would have been a 5 star rating, but the weight of the remaining tracks brought Alanis's beauty down just enough. (By the way, I'm still pretty P.O.'ed that 'Uninvited' did not take home the oscar for best original song...it deserved it hands down!)
Excellent all around.......2006-03-17
I bought this soundtrack after I saw the movie back in 98. I fell in love with every song on it and played it often. When I was stressed out, I would play one of Gabriel Yared's and let the stress drain out of my fingers. About a year ago, I had many of my favorite cd's stolen from the car and this was one of them. It killed me not to have it. I'm buying it again because I truely miss it.
Eclectic Selection .......2006-03-11
Contains an eclectic selection ranging from blues to anthems. Very pleasant listening for most music lovers.
Heavenly.......2005-10-31
this CD is one of my top 5 favorite CDs. as far as soundtracks go - this one and one other are my favs. (the other? you want to know? it's Boys on the Side) it's not that I even like the movie - cause I don't. just that the soundtrack is soooooooo good!
my dear husband, Norman, and I have had great sex to this CD more times than I can count. and I fall asleep to it several times a month. I keep it next to my bed.
the songs -
If God Will Send His Angels - very soft, sweet, sultry, kind.
Uninvited - Alanis Morissette, haunting, sultry, memorable.
Mama, You Got A Daughter - love it! I want a whole CD with just this guy! John Lee Hooker - New Orleans kinda blues - so good. Angel - sweet, Sarah McLachlan. yummy good.
Iris - beyond beautiful. Goo Goo Dolls.
the rest, all good. Jimmi, U2, what a cast! as a compilation - it is very very good.
buy it from a nice seller on Amazon, I did!

Excellent transaction. Would not hesitate to buy again from this seller. Product was delivered promptly and as described.
good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13
This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

Steven Halpern has more than 60 recordings in circulation, including audio projects ostensibly designed to enhance memory, wealth, and weight loss. He even has his own trademarked slogan--the Halpern Effect(tm)! (Take that, Mozart.) Thus, it's easy to view Halpern's high-volume output since 1975 less as art and more like a commodity. Gifts of the Angels, a 68-minute compilation (sampling eight albums and adding two original pieces), offers a few nuggets that suggest Halpern's music at times can stand on its own merits, detached from all of its deep-bliss, New Age pretensions. "Celestial Prophecy," is a nicely detailed (which is not to say complex) excursion on solo piano that briefly stirs the senses, and the title track from Higher Ground is a delicate space-music standout. Meanwhile, the 1970s-flashback tonality of Halpern's electric piano (one piece, "Earthrise," can be traced to Halpern's debut release, Spectrum Suite) dates several of the tracks included here. Nevertheless, the disc's pace, which drifts deeper into the ether on each of the last five tracks, is nicely constructed for those aiming to nod off into a state of contented nothingness. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
I have used this CD for TEN YEARS..........2006-12-23
As a massage therapist, this is the ONLY CD I have used consistently in my practice over the past TEN years. There is something about this particular CD that I absolutely love and that has not been duplicated in other CDs I have used (literally hundreds!) Steven Halpern comes up with awesome music! I have many of his other CDs as well, but NOTHING comes close to "Gifts of the Angels". I am now using my 3rd copy and will buy another when this one is worn out. Many of my clients ASK me to use it in their massage sessions and ask me where to find Halpern's music. Superb.
Welcome to the warm embrace of angels!.......2006-08-31
When much of modern day's rock music and the civilization's pressure on people's lifestyle has a stressful and bad influence on the well being Steven Halpern's music is a blessing. The Godfather and inventor of the New Age music that has a healing and relaxing purpose makes music that puts the body in it's own rhythm and leads into a state of balance and inner peace. Gifts of Angels does all this, but adds an extra dimension with its beautiful angel song, making this an absolute world class New Age album. The music puts the brain waves in an alpha state and sometimes my heartbeat even gets down to 40 beats per minute, leading to a sense of peace and relaxation at the same time as its get me ready to meet my everyday life as a more balanced and happier human being. To have the opportunity to lie down and do nothing, just listen to this beautiful music, and let it fill your entire body with peace and comfort is a luxury that I think every human being should have the opportunity to do and that everybody needs to do once in a while. Unfortunately many people don't have the knowledge about New Age and the way it helps us to a better life. Bands like Rush, Journey and Def Leppard gives us the rush and entertainment that we need to be energetic while going to the gym or driving the car fast on a sunny summer day. Steven Halpern's music gets the body in a state of balance and peace and helps us to get more concentrated and focused. The price of this CD is not just the price of another CD, it's an investment in a better life, like buying a miracle pill that gets you healthier and helps you get away from illness and an unhealthy life, a pill that never will end.
Gift of Angels.......2006-08-21
The music is just that! It sounds like you're in Heaven. Halpern scores again!
This is truly music from the angels.......2006-03-24
I listen to this CD when I am meditating and while I am taking a bath. It allows me to relax and truly be in a state of heaven. I love it.
life saving music.......2006-03-07
I did not expect this but I was really buying this for myself, turns out my daughter likes this at night so she can fall asleep. My daughter is 4 and very active, she never seems to know when to rest and relax.
I decided to play this one night just to ease the mood of the night and she was asleep by the 4th song. We play this cd every night. thank!, you thank!, you thank you!
I love this cd because now I can have her go to sleep at a time that is normal for her age instead of an adult time.
Thanks, I recommend this cd for every one that is tense and needs a good easy winding down. I love it

Album Description
Tom DeLonge knows how he'd like people to listen to We Don't Need to Whisper, the debut album from his new group, Angels and Airwaves. "I really want the room to be dark, with black light or a candle," he says. "People should have headphones on, and they should be really comfortable, maybe sitting on the floor, leaning against the bed. I spent a year and a half working on this record, trying my hardest to give people a moment of escapism. All I ask is 50 minutes of a lowered heart rate."
In just over a decade with Blink-182, DeLonge went from the San Diego suburbs to the top of the world. The band sold over 20 million records worldwide, won a wide assortment of MTV awards, and sold out arenas everywhere from London to Tokyo.
So in early 2005, with Blink-182 on a break, DeLonge came to a crossroads. Rather than do a solo album or another version of his well-reviewed side project, Box Car Racer, DeLonge decided to start a new band. He recruited Box Car Racer guitarist David Kennedy, bassist Ryan Sinn (formerly of the Distillers), and drum god Atom Willard (previously of Rocket from the Crypt and the Offspring). The quartet headed into the studiowhere they would try anything to find a new sound or a new song.
The name Angels and Airwaves popped into DeLonge's head while he was driving. He wasn't certain about the name at first, but then he realized that "Angels and Airwaves" abbreviated as "AAA"and that if he inverted the middle A, it spelled AVA, which is also the name of Tom's daughter.
"This is the next half of Tom DeLonge's life. If you liked anything that I did in the past, this is very much the next step."
"The magic of Blink-182 was that the three of us came together to create this amazing band," he says. "But now there's no holds barred. I get to be me completely with a new group of talented musicians. We are on a different intensity level with this record, and it's something that we can't wait to share with the rest of the world.
Customer Reviews:
Good...but,.......2007-07-29
This is a really good album there is no doubt about it. Great musicianship, recording, creativity and a wonderful atmospheric setting to the entire disc. Some songs are better than others but overall DeLonge really has something going for him here. I was excited for this album...and so was he and that's the problem I have. DeLonge himself hyped this album up way too much and my expectations, along with his, were way too high. Don't get me wrong it is really good, but I was expecting, perhaps unfairly, something amazing, which it isn't. He has managed to creat a distinct sound and there are some really good things about this band and album...I feel like I would have liked it more had it just come out like any other album. Tom just should have been more low-key about it. Oh well...still good
most beautiful sound i've heard in YEARS.......2007-07-08
it's hard for me to describe how exciting Angels and Airwaves is for me... and i think that only someone who truly appreciates music (of this kind) will be able to relate... and i don't mean that in any condescending way...
it's not just the songs...it's the whole theme if you will... they have this mood creation approach... like Tom (lead singer) said, he imagined people listening to the album in its entirety in a dark room with a single lit candle or something...
the album focuses on a theme of the best and worst that we as humans can do... one is war and the other is love... and how ironically these can exist simultaneously worldwide... and not just in a violent world-war destructive type of way, but in a interpersonal relationship and emotional destruction sort of way... via society as a whole maybe... and how love can heal and span space and time.... also of worldwide and interpersonal magnitude.... Tom said the cover of the album is a picture to show the "infinite potential of a human being" .... "we don't need to whisper"....
anyways, what i'm getting at is that THEY'RE AMAZING! ok seriously though... maybe it's just me because i grew up listening to more focus-driven-progressive-minded music if you will... again, no condescending going on here... and what i mean to say is that you just don't get that sort of approach to things anymore.... and Angels and Airwaves is doing a fine job so far, i think! it's just beautiful... i can't describe in words the sounds, you know? you really do need to just sit in a dark room with a candle and listen to the whole album... but then you'd be missing out on all the cool WWII footage they incorporated into the film they made for the album! haha...
they certainly can't be compared to any other band out there today... they have a unique sound in the sense that they are drawing on a sound that spans decades now... it's almost just as if Tom took a little of the Cure, the Police, U2, and maybe even Pink Floyd and put them in a blender with his own little modern twist on it... the guitar work is in a word; beautiful...
enough of me drooling over this band, eh? i just wanted to end with a bit from an interview with Tom DeLonge himself , and, if you know me, you might catch the meaning at the end there... and the irony of my love for this band is that when i first got into them, i was in a very potentially stable and positive place (you know...), and i felt empowered to grow and just enjoy the positivity and infinite potential there... and then i went through some dark times and that particular stability left me faltered... i thought i could never feel the metaphoric light i felt when listening to this album again... but i did!! and that adds to the testament of positivity the album conveys... and to how humans don't give ourselves enough inner-strength-credit.... and i know i'm still in that dark place sometimes, but this album definitely inspires my daily life...
oh, did i mention that you should listen to it? haha...
A good start . . ........2007-06-27
. . . for this band. Certainly better than the first effort from other artists who have attempted to start new band [ex. Richard Patrick and his new band, i.e. - what's left of Stone Temple Pilots] . . . this is the best U2 CD since "Zooropa".
U2 and blink shake hands.......2007-05-27
I am not a Blink 182 fan. I can get down to a couple of songs, but thats about it.
Enough about them, this CD is really freaking good. It is very pleasing to the ears. Kind of spacey, yet still rock driven. Immediately noticed the delay on the guitar and incredible sound of the drums as the main staple to the music. I wouldn't go as far as to say that the lyrics are juevenille, but they are delicate. Lots of relationship/break up lyrics. I definately didnt expect this album to blow me away, but it did. Maybe your next? (jazz hands)
Too Much Blink 182.......2007-05-15
The music and instrumentation was nice to listen to, but I couldn't get past the lyrics & the singer.
The lyrics seemed juvenile, and I really can't stand the "Blink 182" voice.
If you DON'T like Blink 182, then don't buy this album.
But if you ARE a fan of Blink 182, I would try this album out. It was a neat variation of music. It's nice to see that band members of big-market national acts are trying to branch out.

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
spiritual americana.......2007-01-06
I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!
Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11
Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.
Superb .......2006-08-07
This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.
Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07
My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.
These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.
Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08
I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

Smooth As Silk.......2007-08-03
This is a potpourri of Mr. Rutter's compositions, sung by the peerless Cambridge Singers. Buy it only if you want outstanding music that cures the senses.
John Rutter Collection is glorious!.......2007-07-23
This music begins my day in uplifting way. Each day a different piece catches my attention. I am so glad to have it.
John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19
This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.
Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20
I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-03
I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.

This project pairs smooth jazz keyboardist/composer Bob James and his Fourplay bandmates bassist Nathan East (who sings on the ballad "Endless Time") and drummer Harvey Mason, with guitarist Jack Lee and the Angels of Shanghai, who are masters of the er-hu, a two-string violin, the lute-like pipa, a harp-zither called a guzheng, and the dizi bamboo flute. James' sympathetic pianisms best blend with the Sinocentric sonorities and syncopations on the hip-notic "Gulangyu Island" the Asian and French-inflected "Melodia: A Quiet Place for Two" and "Angela with Purple Bamboo," a Silk Road update of James' beloved theme from the TV show Taxi. "By combining the spirit of American jazz with the beauty of traditional Chinese instruments by absorbing and learning from this rich Eastern cultural heritage,"" James writes in the liner notes, "I have sought to explore ways that we would communicate openly and freely; improvising and sharing our discoveries." --Eugene Holley, Jr.

An Excellent album!.......2007-06-09
As all the music recorded by this extraordinary keyboardist,"Angels of Shangai" is an excellent cd. The music is beautiful and these young musicians from Shangai do their best with their typical instruments. The song "Endless Time" interpreted by bassist Nathan East, is so romantic and emotive, one of my favorites. Every song has the enchantment that make you feel out of this world. If you like good music and smooth jazz with oriental sound, this cd is for you!
Heavenly music of the Angels of Shanghai with Bob James.......2007-05-20
I've been a Bob James fan for over 30 years. This latest collaboration with the young Chinese musicians from the music conservatory in Shanghai builds on the legacy of Mr.James. I was a bit skeptical of this joint venture, being somewhat of fusion purist. I was used to Bob's tradition of surrounding himself by the best jazz fusion players around,e.g. Grover,Hubert Laws,Gary King,Earl Klugh,Boney James,Kirk Whalum,Larry Carlton,Lee Ritenour,Harvey Mason,David Sanborn, the Brecker Brothers,Eric Gale and all the others too numerous to mention. I put my skepticism aside, thinking that if the Angels were good enough for Bob then they certainly must be good enough for me.
After allowing myself the opportunity to let the music come to me, I realized that Bob's musical genius had found a new platform with this East meets West venture. Bob has always had a knack of showcasing the talents of his players and this CD continues that tradition. The really pleasurable thing is that the listener has the opportunity to hear perhaps for the first time the enchanting power of ancient Chinese instruments such as the Er-Hu, a two string instrument played like a vertical violin or the guzheng, a harp like instrument whose unique sound is matched by the grace of the young woman playing it. I was fortunate enough to see the group in concert and added it to my list of the top live performances I've ever seen. Get the CD. You won't regret it!
AN ABSOLUTELY TRANSFORMING CD!.......2007-05-13
Mr. James, thank you for your inventive spirit...for always trying new things, for continuing to grow and for still surprising me after all these years. An absolutely beautiful musical gift -that what this cd is. These traditional Chinese instruments have a fascination for me that is indescribable. Mr. Lee on the guitar is as soulful as any fourplay guitarist. Harvey Mason and Nathan East are both, as always, perfection. And "Angela with Purple Bamboo" -heavenly! One of the best versions of this popular tune. I love this cd so much - I play it every morning to get me "inspired" for the day. I hope the next Fourplay recording will include some of this sound in at least a few of the tracks. I also hope Mr. James will do another project with these young musicians. Thanks again for this great work.
This is the music of the future........2007-05-02
Lets face it the Chinese will rule the world one day..lets congratulate Bob James for leading the way. This music reminds me of my favorite Kung Fu movie with a romantic twist....highly recommended to all martial arts fans.
BOB JAMES & HIS "SHANGHAI ANGELS" SOAR BEAUTIFULLY ACROSS MUSICAL BORDERS.......2007-04-15
Five INTERNATIONAL Stars!! Master pianist Bob James brings his smooth jazz/pop stylings and attractive songs into the 'world music' arena in a rewarding musical triumph. Although hardly nascent and somewhat in the area code of the group 'Hiroshima', James' stylings have their own musical density, owing to his piano, the unique Chinese instruments in support (the violin-like "er-hu" instrument is flat out mesmerizing), and due to his lush, swinging arrangements, that separate them from the others. American Jazz and Chinese traditional flourishes are combined using a "quintet" of Chinese students from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music along with a quintet composed of Bob and three old musical friends (Harvey Mason and Nathan East of "FourPlay" and Jack Lee), plus Lewis Pragasam of Kuala Lumpur. Special appearances are by Karen Han ("Butterfly Lovers") and Bridgett Bryant ("Endless Time"). Although spoken language is a barrier among some band members, the group communicates beautifully in the international language of music, which is carefully crafted by Mr James and friends. This group is also a touring band and Mr James says he is clearly enjoying this musical experience, as reflected herein.
The Pieces De Resistance, the best of the best, begin with the gentle, beautiful "Angels' Theme: The Invention of Love". "Endless Time" is wonderful music with co-writer Nathan East's fluid voice softly creating a great atmosphere with Bridgett Bryant in support. "The Magic Paintbrush" is pure smooth wonder as James & Co exchange musical leads, with just the right amount of funk and density added to the mix. "Dialogues: the Universal Language" is a really nice surging uptempo number, where the "Angels" show they can swing. When they first met, Mr James used the theme from "Taxi" as an example of his prior work to the students and it is included here in a great performance entitled "Angela With Purple Bamboo". This is an unusual and great addition to the Bob James smooth jazz discography. Many moments of pure beauty lie ahead for the listener! Five WONDERFUL Stars.

Concept: Charlie Sexton in dream date with a second killer guitarist/vocalist (Doyle Bramhall II), Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm section and producer Little Steven. Result: A can't-fail combo that swings like vintage Stones/Bad Company. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Every Texan should own this stellar recording.......2007-03-13
These are songs that were recorded soon after Stevie Ray Vaughan died, and the players on this CD were some of his closest compadres. These fellows were in deep pain from the loss of Stevie, and these songs culled from their ARC sessions are a vivid glimpse into how they worked their way through the pain. Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II trade vocals and guitar licks, while Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton, aka "Double Trouble", lay down the rythym section. It's a phenomenal CD by all accounts. Every song is very good, and at the price Amazon has this CD for, there is no excuse to not own this.
Texas Blues Rock-
Sexton has recorded and toured with Dylan, and Bramhall has toured with Roger Waters and now works with Eric Clapton.

Arc Angels Rocked.......2007-02-01
This album is one of the best rock albums of the last 20 years. The Arc Angels fell, but before the fall they had something really special going on. I've read some of the bad reviews here and I have no idea what those dudes are talking about. This is a supergroup to be sure, but not a supergroup in the sense of a bunch of solo artists who happen to be on stage together. The Arc Angels were a real band. And they were an awesome band. I saw many of their shows back in the 90's in Austin and I am here to tell you that they were by far the best rock and roll shows I've ever seen in a club. The sense of excitement at their shows was palpable. They were so good you felt like you were seeing the Stones right before they got famous.
Buy this album. Listen to it. It rocks.
A Great Rock Album.......2007-01-28
Every song rocks. You can put the cd on and listen to it from start to finish without skipping a song. That is the best thing I can say about any album. If you want to rock out, this is your album. I don't care how old this album is--it still sounds modern. That's the mark of a classic.

Every now and again a band capable of not just capturing the spirit of a bygone era but portraying it with uncanny authenticity and accuracy arrives, and in an era where music lovers seem increasingly ravenous for psychedelic-inflected rock, Austin's the Black Angels are precisely that act. Following on the heels of their recent Turn On, Tune In, Drone Out EP, the quintet transports listeners to a land of napalm-bright LSD flashbacks with an elegantly unholy sound that proves both eerie and ethereal. "Young Men Dead" and "The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven" walk the line between celebratory dance and grief-filled dirge. These tracks unnerve the conscious mind with unsettling drones and vocals that seem to have emerged from some parallel universe where the struggle, strife, promise, and even the seedy underbelly of the Love Generation lives on in each primal drum beat and louder-than-loud bent note from a guitar that could not have been built anywhere on Earth, but has been drenched with the sweat and blood of a generation on the verge of either victory or collapse. If there is an act in American popular music with a future brighter and vaster than the cosmos, the Black Angels are it. --Jedd Beaudoin
Customer Reviews:
A Doorway Into Darkness.......2007-06-01
Droning dirges, dark lyrics, desolation, heavy psychedelia... if this is your cup of tea, you will love The Black Angels. Their music evokes a sense of deterioration, a sense of longing, and yet, somehow, a sense of hope. They present a musical vision of hell, and they play as if their lives depend upon finding their way out.
If The Black Angels sound so dire, why do I enjoy their music so much? I have to say it is because they connect with me on a level below that of conscious or rational thought, which leads to "letting go" while listening. They connect with me at gut level, with little or no pretense. The musical arrangements are simple, but beneath the simplicity lies complexity, found in the lyrics, in the reverb-laden production, in the overall sound of quiet desperation that suggests an inner determination to survive the roller-coaster of human emotions in one piece. The musicians present the listener with a universal sort of primal scream, and thus the music has become therapeutic for me with repeated listening.
According to the band credits in the CD, the organist plays "drone machine". From what I could tell when I saw this group play live recently, that is an apt description. Adding to the drone, one band member played an electric sitar. The whole of the sound is very psychedelic, stripping away outer layers of emotions to reveal something much deeper and heavier: reality. The band provides a doorway into darkness. It's like they are describing an emotional worst-case scenario, or a bad trip... but the listener is left with a feeling that maybe life isn't as bad as all that, or that "this too shall pass".
Take a long drive at night, and put this CD in your player. Embrace the darkness of the Black Angels, and be uplifted!
Wow.......2007-05-25
You would think a band that sounds like so many others (BRMC, Dead Meadow, Warlocks, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3) and doesn't really do anything extraordinary musically on its debut full-length would be destined to fail.
Then along come The Black Angels to prove you wrong.
Relying almost entirely on one tempo (plodding), one sound (fuzzy) and one style (60s psych rock filtered through the blues) would seem so plain in any other band's hands, but The Black Angels provide enough youhtful vigor and earnestness in what it is doing to completely floor you.
From start to finish (even on the 'lackluster' cuts like First Vietnamese War and Better Off Alone) The Black Angels pull you up by the nostrils and then drag you through a nigthmarish world that is oh-so-scary because it is real, it is now, and it is here.
Young Men Dead, Sniper at the Gates of Heaven, The Prodigal Sun, Black Grease and Manipulation are great songs sure to stand the test of time. That song about the Vietnam War (One, two, three what are we fightin for....) is good but dates itself; The Blacks Angels deal in pointed criticisms that are vague enough to make sense now or the next time the United States decides to play schoolyard bully and push some poor people around.
The political messages coupled with classic scuzzy blues-based rock mesh into one fine album. Chalk me up for first in line when the next album by The Black Angels comes out.
Do Not "Passover".......2007-04-20
What a wonderful and creative debut. Bottom line: If Jim Morrison were alive today, this is the band he would be in. Be sure to catch them live, they sound great.
absolutely great.......2007-04-04
I really really love this cd.. But If you are not a fan of Psychidelic rock music then this may not be for you.. But if you do! Then i would definetly recommend this cd
The sound of potential.......2007-03-27
There are things that I adore about this record. Overall, the sound is amazing. Big, reverberating, clangy and stoned. The playing is top notch, but it's the lyrics that sometimes make me roll my eyes. While I appreciate a good anti-war song as much as anyone, some of the wording here is just a little corny. I chalk it up to the fact that The Black Angels are a very young band, and just go along for the ride. If these guys keep it up, they have the potential to become one of the best bands around.
Oh yeah- almost every song reminds me of either "The End" or "The Unknown Soldier" by the Doors, but hey, that's not a bad thing.
