I LOVE THIS BAND.......2007-07-16
From the first instant I heard "Nemo" playing on Kansas State's Wildcat radio, I couldn't get enough of Umphrey's. Saftey in Numbers is simply the best album I've heard in a long time. Each song is original and the Jam monitor somehow does not quite fit them. It's like listening to that awesome college band that you don't remember the name of but MAN were they good and you met this girl and she was BEAUTIFUL and the beer was everywhere and EVERYONE was having a good time. Its that feeling. Free, clean, well-written, well-produced, fun, engaging, and different everytime you listen to it. The bridges flow into melody so clearly, the rhymes aren't cliched, and its enough of a Jam album to be different but not stiffled by 25 minute interludes of Phishdom. Absolutely great.
Some Good Some Not.......2007-04-17
Do 3 or 4 really good songs make a good album, not this time. I don't know if the other songs were weak or they all needed more of the same style from song to song. The Bottom Half(their newest)is much stronger.
Excellent!.......2007-03-09
I don't know why some people do not give this band more credit. WOW! This album I have been hooked to since it arrived at my door. I have just gotten back into the jamband scene recently and these guys impress me. Their live stuff I hear is even more amazing, but SIN's is definitely a work of art in the studio. Very creative riffs with very tight drumming! Some songs remind me of Yes (Words) or that progressive rock sound. I can only imagine what the album "The Bottom Half" is going to be like. I've definitely pre-ordered that.
So much more than a jam band.......2006-11-13
At a time when great music is seldom heard on commercial radio and music fans have to discover it through the Internet, live shows, and listening to public or college radio, Umphrey's McGee's Safety in Numbers is a true gem. Previously, I had only known the band as the opening act for the Dave Matthews Band's 2006 summer tour. I purchased this on a whim and was pleasantly surprised with what I heard. Although Umphrey's McGee is classified as a jam band, they offer so much more than other bands of that genre as they combine elements of jazz, metal, folk, country, and progressive rock to create a sound that is truly their own. Furthermore, the band prove to be excellent songwriters as the more immediate tracks never get dull and the more experimental songs grow on you with each listen.
Every track here is a winner. "Believe The Lie" starts out as a fast paced rocker before becoming reflective during the choruses. Despite its title, "Rocker" is very melancholy and the strings provide a lot of color. "Liquid" and "Words" are both very progressive as the former's vocals recall the Alan Parsons Project while the latter recalls late-80's Yes before becoming very dreamlike. "Nemo" is the hardest track with its staccato rhythms and wild guitar leads. "Women Wine and Song", which guests Huey Lewis on harmonica, is the most immediate track and easily the most upbeat. "Intentions Clear" remains my favorite song on the album due to its memorable hooks and the excellent interplay between the guitars and saxophone. The folky "End of the Road" is very cool and the harmonica at the end is a nice touch. "Passing" is very personal and somber while the awesome "Ocean Billy" bounces between its repetitive raging riff and its atmospheric verses. "The Weight Around" is a great acoustic track with excellent harmonies that ends the album. In closing, I'm glad that I purchased Safety in Numbers and based on the reviews I have read here on Amazon, I'm going to pick up their other albums too. Highly recommended.
Short and to the point..........2006-11-07
According to some of the reviews on this album already this should not be the first Umphrey's album you should listen to. Well I could not find any other Umphrey's album at my local music store so I gave it a chance since I have been curious about this band for a while. All I have to say about this album is it is captivating, from the opening riff on the first track to the last note played on the final song, I couldnt drag myself away from the album. I just got this three days ago and has been on repeat (along with m. wards new album). I can see where people say they sound like phish but honestly so does any other band out there in the "jam band" category, just listen to raq(their new album the vocalist sounds like he is trying to emmulate treys voice) but the same thing was also said for phish when they were at the height of their popularity, people claimed they sound like they are trying to be the dead. My point is to just give it a chance you will probably like it especially if you have heard their previous material and if you like the "jam band" type music you will probably like it as well.

Album Description
Underoath's potential was truly tapped upon entering the studio with James Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever) to create their third studio release, "They're Only Chasing Safety," dropping June 15, 2004. The new vocals meld into what Underoath has been evolving to become for years: a cleaner, more direct heavy rock style avoiding any hardcore clichis they might have previously garnered. And with their innovative keyboard / electronic heavy base for the dynamic 10 song release, it's hard to imagine anyone penning Underoath with clichis at all. Still, fans of the previously metal-driven band may be in for a shock as catchy choruses and hooks dominate this release.
"If hardcore kids want to like us, that's awesome," McTague elaborates, "but we're not trying to impress them. And as far as kids saying we've sold out...kids like that just like to talk. They might be weirded out at first [by the new album], but hopefully it will catch on, but if not, who cares, you know?"
There's no doubt with infectious choruses on stand-out tracks like "Reinventing Your Exit," and "80's Song" along with the pure magnitude and passion of each track, that the songs will, in fact, catch on regardless of where the band's concerns lie. Still Underoath remains apathetic toward critics and will keep concentrating on what they know best: writing songs they like and playing shows relentlessly because that's what they love doing.
"Everyone is all about making things more marketable, receivable, accessible, and in turn have watered down everything from their faith to their struggles in life, and I think people need to start being real," McTague concludes. "Our goal is to write an album that changes music and impacts people in a huge way. I think we might start something with this record, but I think there is a lot more to uncover in the future...this is by far the closest we have ever come to that though."

Amazing Listen.......2007-06-17
I had never heard of Underoath and wasn't familiar with the hardcore scene. I heard Underoath in an interview on MTV and thought their screaming-metal sound was interesting. I decided to buy this CD as well as Define the Great Line. I have been listening to it for six months and I'm absolutely blown away. I love the contrast between light and darkness (sort of like pieces of Heaven and Hell). This is perhaps best exhibited on "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door" which has big, swirling guitars over a screaming verse interspersed with an eerie choir section. It's the best song on the album. "Reinventing Your Exit" is another standout, fearturing easy singing mixed with this ferocious screaming hookline ("Right now we're just looking for the exit"). I like the manic intensity-you can practically feel the lead vocalist's rage as he roars "This is my panic/This is my call to arms". It's true: this is not metal. I listen mostly to metal but I still like this. Give it a shot. If you like what you hear, check out Define the Great Line (the latter is a much darker heavy metal album).
Sounds OK..........2007-03-02
The cd is good, but I get irritated with the song "boy brushed in red", tell me if I am wrong, but I think it sounds as if it is Taking Back Sunday. Thats way I am rating this CD 4 stars, the songs sound good. I would much rather recomend this CD, over Define the Great Line. This album is pretty well made and has nice pseodo break downs, nothing new in this time, but they sound good though!
-thumbs up-.......2007-02-22
This album isn't quite as screamy (for lack of a better word) as I'd like it to be, and it all kinda sounds alike, but it's pretty decent.
I don't get it..........2007-02-08
I don't get it. I don't understand what a lot of their lyrics are really about; maybe I'm just too old to get it. What I do get, however, is that this is a great CD. I bought this CD a few years ago after hearing "Reinventing Your Exit" on a Christian rock station. The first few times I heard the song, I hated it, but it grew on me. I listened to the whole CD and, at first, lamented my decision to buy it. I gave it a few more chances, and started to like it.
I think what makes it a difficult sell at first is all the odd breaks and synth fills. They don't seem to really fit at first, but once I got the overall idea of their music, those breaks and fills started to work.
Their drummer is probably the brightest point in the group. Not only does he sing most of the more melodic vocals, but his drum riffs and fills are aggressive, precise, and just plain brilliant. Even if you already have and like this CD, take the time to go back and just listen to the drums. There are certain drum fills that are likely just synth loops, but if you pay close attention to the drummer himself, you're likely to hear a few things you may have missed.
The lead singer (screamer may be a better term) has a young, brash, angry snarl that almost goes over the top at times, yet works very well as a counterpoint to the drummer's singing. The back and forth of the two singing styles helps to introduce two moods to most of their songs. The drummer's voice brings a bit of a melancholy, apologetic, almost sweet feeling to the songs. The lead singer's voice is full of anger and frustration. The two together give me an impression of someone who at first is sweet and forgiving, but after taking too much BS, finally lashes out.
A perfect example of their complementing each other is found on the song "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door". Some of the drummer's singing is eerie and has a dreamlike quality as though he is passively viewing himself "drowning in his sleep". The lead singer's voice offers a contrast to the drummer's in that we feel his panic and pain. Sadly, the snippet here on Amazon does that song no justice whatsoever.
The guitarists for the most part aren't flashy. They don't play leads, and don't riff all over the songs. They are however, very solid, and melodic, and their playing is perfect for the music.
About the only low point for me concerning this album is the track "Blue Note". I REALLY don't get that... doesn't feel like it fits the album, and is far too short in my opinion to be given it's own track listing. I suppose it was meant as sort of an intermission, as it appears near the middle of the CD, but if anything, that momentary pause from the meat and potatoes of the album takes away more than it adds.
Bottom line, if you want to hear something aggressive, yet musically creative and stylistically diverse, these guys are worth a listen. Just remember to give them a few chances before you give up on them. This album really does take some time to grow on you.

HxC SUCKA.......2006-07-15
this album is great. i don't know what genre i'd put it under though. it's definitely hardcore but it's also pop-punk/hardcore. anyways, this whole album is awesome and the lyrics are great. if you listen to this album then see a pic of their screamer spencer, you wouldn't believe that's him. dude is like 5'5" and 140lbs. but he is awesome. i already owned the original version but i gladly paid for this album a second time for the bonus track AND the DVD documentary which was super. HARDCORRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEE.
Super amazing hardcore from the uber talented UNDEROATH!.......2006-04-12
Ok so there is an obviously overwhelming surge of emo / hardcore / pop bands flooding the scene lately. And due to this flood of rather generic material, most bands have trouble finding their own definition or sound, simply because there's a real dry spell of originality. Underoath have taken their metalcore roots and extracted the energy and intensity as well as the heaviness, but added a much more poppy sound, which can be predictable, but is certainly welcomed when performed at this tier. Brilliant choruses, catchy without being predictable, and intense without being too hard: this band defines a good blend of hardcore and pop.
The CD is filled with heavy, pummeling guitars and riffs, with showered pop choruses and breakdowns. Perfect, honestly, for fans of hardcore who enjoy singing. Not to mention the guest vocals from Aaron of Copeland on the last track..
Flatly and plainly, if you like hardcore and pop together, you will love this disc, and probably worship Underoath for putting out exactly what you wanted to hear. And while it's not necessarily suprising how "They're Only Chasing Safety" sounds, it's certainly an amazing record, flat out.
Good Buy... Unless you own the original.......2006-02-23
Is it me or are "You're So Intricate" and "The 80's Song" the same as "I'm Content With Losing" and "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door", respectively?
The only new songs on here are "Smic Tague" and "I've Got 10 Friends and A Crowbar That Say You Ain't Gonna Do Jack".
Only buy this if you don't own the original. Or if you're completely obsessed with Underoath in a abnormal way, then you can buy it.
However, It's a great album, and if you're a fan of the screamo genre you'll enjoy them.
yeah, what the other guy said........2006-02-02
i wound up hearing the song "dangerous leaving your front door", and i thought okay, cool band. but i couldn't quite place what sounded so familur about them, then i was strangely tempted to listen to blink 182. and it hit. these guys are nothing but jack sh$t rip off wanna bees. being inspired is fine. but uh looking at someone else, and seeing that as an opratunity to make it, no matter what intensions, you suck!!!!!! forget underoath. and gee that reminds me, what is up with all these little gay teenie boppers coming out with records that are peices of crud lately? i just don't get it. oh yeah that reminds me, one last, thing. death to coheed and exist. peace!! find some real music!! right on! rock on! rock and roll is being destoyed, but at least there are few and far between that still at least can be soothful. find them, find them now!!!

Customer Reviews:
A great album by a great band (4.5).......2006-12-09
Thrice have gotten more recognition more recently, but the word mainly started with the band's sophomore album, "The Illusion of Safety." The first album, "Identity Crisis," showed promise, but it's more than fulfilled here. Each song is great. Some who are more familiar with the more sophisticated later works may hope for that, but this album is just a great hardcore/punk album with 13 songs that use great riffs from Teppei, and there's actually some soloing in here! Not just that, the songs are just as well-written as later works, even if no album by any artist has/will do as much for me as "Vheissu." I'd put this in the same level as the follow-up, "The Artist in the Ambulance." It has gotten better each time, so I may end up liking this one even more. Also, don't worry newer fans, there's hints of what is to come later, like that really cool classical piano interlude at the ending of "Deadbolt."
So strange I...I'll always remember you.......2006-08-16
This is a great album. Pure energy, gut busting mosh pit music right here. Later Thrice albums could probably be described as more mature than this one, especially Vheissu; but this is a great piece of work. Especially considering that this is only their 2nd album. This is my third favorite thrice album, behind "Artist" and "Vheissu." Taking into account those are 2 of my favorite albums ever, that is not a knock on the quality of this album. Thrice is band that just improves with every release.
What I've always liked about this album is the guitar work. There are some awesome solo's in this album. Its freaking amazing. My favorite all-time thrice song is "To Awake and Avenge the Dead. When I want to get pumped up, I always listen to that song. Its unbelievable. The fast paced nature of the album is probably what sets it apart from later work, but I still think its some of the best stuff that they have written. My only complaint, is that some of the album gets repetitive. That can be said of a alot of albums, and does happen here somewhat. But it doesn't detract at all from the album.
Standout tracks: "Kill me quickly," "deadbolt," and then the last 3 songs end the album on a high note. "To Awake and Avenge the Dead," So Strange I Remember You," and the epic "The Beltsville Cruicible."
Even though this album only came out in 2002, it has a classic feeling to it when you compare it "The Artist and the Ambulance," and "Vheissu." And classic is usually a good thing in my book.
Still one of my all time favs........2006-05-10
This is Thrice's best CD. They are four dudes from Cali all with amazing talent and Dustin is a very intelligent and emotional frontman. If you've heard their new singles from Vheissu on the radio or something and want to know what I (and a lot of other people) consider real, old school "Thrice" then this is the album to pick up.
From start to finish it's just fantastic. I listen to just about everything except country and as far as punk/metal goes, this should be the freakin' standard.
Thrice has grown and evolved emensely. Sometimes it's hard to think the same band made Illusion of Safety and Vheissu, but I still love them and think that they are one of the BEST bands in modern music.
Check out their DVD that accompained If We Could Only See Us Now for a good telling of their backstory.
Bottom line: Thrice is amazing and The Illusion of Safety just plain rocks.
Another good band falls victum of modern day emo crap........2006-01-19
I'm going to be straight up, the title says it all. Thrice was a great band, Illusion of Safety is one of the most incredable albums ever. Now they sound like every other band out there today. Personally I Hate emo, I grew out of that crap along time ago. I'm sorry if I offend people in saying that. I just dont see any talent in it. Thrice used to be my favorite band. Being a guitarist myself, I enjoyed Identity Crisis' true hardcore sound, and Illusion of Safety's amazing creativity, but the Artist in the Ambulance and this new CD are crap. If your emo, then give it a shot, but if your sick of the new-age emo crap you can't avoid every time you turn on the radio, put this album back. It's time to move on Thrice fans. They came.. they rocked.. there done.
Nice eerie, almost evil sounding guitar bits.......2006-01-09
A righteous effort by Thrice. The guitars blaring are pretty good, but the way the lead guitarist rips through the rythm with brief but sharp solos is even better. You can interpet the vocals as either being different in a good way, or different in a bad way. Personally I think the screaming goes perfect with the instruments. Whatever. 5 stars

Loved their voices and harmony. I'm glad that I read various reviews and found this group listed as a "must hear". I second it.
Absolutely the best!.......2006-03-26
Words fail me, but this CD by the Fairfield Four never does. I can't remember how I found it, but it's been a strong favorite in my CD collection for years now. Impeccable performances, marvelous voices, beautiful spirit - nourishment for ears, soul and spirit. This morning I started importing CDs into my iTunes collection, and this one is on top of the stack. Thank you, Fairfield Four, for making this recording. It's truly one for the ages.
Born Again? You could be ...........2006-02-26
I first heard of The Fairfield Four in connection with the Coen Brothers film "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" - so, quite recently then. Being an English Catholic you don't tend to hear an awful lot of American Gospel music in the UK. How many years have I wasted? This album just blew me away with the harmonies, the depth and tone and the sheer love and joy in these songs. I must have listened to it a 100 times now and it never fails to lift my spirits. Give your soul a workout and buy this album!
INNNNCREDIBLE!.......2005-10-29
Good Lord...this is music so incredible that even this agnostic (that is normally disgusted by "Christians" & their hipocracies) can happily put up with all the Born Again hogwash & references to births in Bethlehem & the Ten Commandments, to be delighted by the lush, dramatic, creative, playful harmonies that exude musical genius with every note. This is REAL music....this IS world class American music.
Powerful basso profundo, great a cappella gospel!.......2002-04-20
Isaac "Dickie" Freeman, the bass singer in this group, is the reason I love this CD so much. I got to hear this group live several years ago and was just blown away. Listen to the track "Roll Jordan Roll" and the nice smooth way the Nashville Bluegrass Band starts off. They are a great group in their own right, but when Freeman comes in and starts the rest of the Fairfield Four's contribution, it's a whole different song!
This CD was recorded before the death of some of the original members of the world's "oldest teenage group." Highly recommended!

45 Grave!.......2006-12-12
This is a fine 45 Grave album. I bought it after I purchased their other album, Autopsy, which in my opinion is much better than this one. While this one's a keeper, it lacked the speed and catchyness that Autopsy fed me. I recommend you get Autopsy, but if you can't find it, this one's a safe bet.
Excellent, but there are some CD changes.......2006-07-10
First of all, a note for collectors, did someone notice that the order of the songs has been changed from LP to CD ??
Well I have here a 1985 printed LP and the sequence are (please note):
1. Insurance from God - 2. Evil - 3. Partytime - 4. Dream Hits II - 5. Slice O'Life - 6. Phantoms - 7. 45 Grave - 8.Violent World - 9. Bad Love - 10. Surf Bat - 11. Procession
(just give it a try ... by example, I think it's more natural to have "Violent World" in 8th position ... you need time to be prepared to face it :^) ).
For the rest of the songs, they are clearly not from original release, and if you pay some atention, you can feel it (not the same quality -in production and in composition- wich perpass the songs of the original release, and I agree with Elizabeth that "No School" just sucks). As they come with CD anyway, no problem, but don't expect the same quality as "Violent World", "Slice O'Life", "Bad Love" or "Procession" (my favorites).
Well, about 45 GRAVE. I must tell that this band remind me Hüsker Dü (guitars particulary). In this point of view, this particular record has a great merit: trying to do something different from the thing they do, by mixing some dark-gothic influences to the song compositions. And I think the result has succeed and is unique.
It's quite possible that originals fans from 45 Grave do not very like this album, just because he's a notable change in the trajectory of the band. Maybe it's a public who don't expect that kind of evolution. But I think this a very positive moment of the band. I'm aware that this change was magistrally orchestred.
Conclusion: yes, it's a must have (at least a must know). Not representative of the band's work, maybe, but really a very very good and evolutive step they made.
Blondie puts out a Halloween album........2006-06-20
This is a very cheesy "goth" pseudopunk type album. But I got it because I figured it would be a good companion to the Return of the Living dead soundtrack, which it is. Its not the style that makes it average, but the fact that only half the songs are good. The "School's Out" cover sucks, not because they did a bad cover but because that song is always bad. Worth getting, though. Has some nice and unusual touches.

To respond to the last review:
Pat Smear played guitar on a bunch of tracks from Autopsy (by 45 Grave). He also played guitar live with Nirvana on a bunch of their tours, and played in the Foo Fighters.
So, when the guys says "This band has members both, prior and post, that have been members of Nirvana, the Germs" etc. he is talking about Pat Smear who played guitar in the Germs, and then also with 45 Grave and Nirvana.
Thus you are wrong.
setting this straight.......2005-06-12
45 Grave has never been apart of nirvana. There was only three men in nirvana. 45 grave is as much punk as they are death rock. please look up the band and read it's bio WRITTEN BY ONE OF THE MEMBERS IN THE BAND before you come on here and write a whole review about incorrect information on this wonderfull band. (I perfer Dinah Cancer (the vox), but you pick...)

Remasters Please!!.......2006-12-20
Being a long-time CTS fan, I was hoping these two albums would get the deluxe remaster treatment, but no dice. I've wanted them on cd for so long, and the price was right...so I gave in. As I suspected, this is a barebones reissue: no liner notes, partial reproducton (at best) of the lp's original artwork, no lyrics and last but not least, low volume in the mastering. Obviously this was done some time ago but there still could have been more attention given to a better finished product. It goes without saying the music is SUPERB. and SAFETY IN NUMBERS shows how great this band was, even without John Palumbo. A good remaster would have rated 5 stars, but..This will just have to do until something better comes along(IF it does).
Two of the Best Albums You Have Probably Never Heard.......2006-09-09
This CD is actually two albums in one -- "Animal Notes" and "Safety in Numbers", and is one of the best items you will find on eMusic. Download quickly or you may lose your chance.
Animal notes, the first eight songs on this double package is worth the price of admission, but I am going to focus on the final seven songs, which make up almost all of the original Safety in Numbers. More on the "almost all" in just a moment.
Safety in Numbers is CTS's finest album, and one of the best albums most people have never heard. If there were any justice in the world, these guys and Porcupine tree would be two of the most popular bands of all time, but we all know musical justice is in short supply.
I first encountered Safety in Numbers in the late 70s. A cousin had it playing on his 8-track player. After a couple of listens I had to have the album. I bought it in Vinyl; the record was scratched, so I took it back for a refund, as it was the store's only copy. I could not find another copy of the record. Fortunately I had kept a back-up on tape (with the scratch) and it became one of my favorite albums. Finally, I was able to buy this double CD a few years ago. and I had to get it as an import for about $18 or $19. I was happy to pay it.
You can hear some Beatles influence in Safety in Numbers -- particularly in "Flashlight" in the mellow interlude in about the middle of the song. This little snippet is so luscious, it could have been expanded into its own song, and it would have been a great one.
The two best tracks on Safety in Numbers may be the first and last, "Nuclear Apathy" -- the partly mellow, part hard / Prog symphony of a song that begins the album -- and the title track, a very well-produced, all stops pulled out social commentary track that I just can't get tired of. In between these masterpieces, are several more songs, each varied and able to stand on its own. Probably the most different from the rest is "A night on the Town (with Snow White)", which I might call progressive doo-wop with amazing, ironic, even humorous lyrics. Don't let my label turn you off of that song. It is a gem, and worth coming back to again and again and sharing with friends.
My one complaint is that the people who put this together did not include a short little track called (I believe) "Prelude to Safety in Numbers" , a strange and short little preview of "safety in Numbers"; this odd little piece was originally at the end of side 1 of the vinyl release. Oh well.
This is a wonderful package and worth buying and keeping and going back to again and again.
Crack the Sky ..Classy Rock.......2006-06-06
A great 70's group, still playable today.. slip this one on with other discs at a party..have everyone asking who is that? With all the previous reveiws I woun't get into all the tracks and details, some great listening stuff here.. seen them live in the late seventies they do have a very classy delivery.. I have always enjoyed them through the years, hope you do too...
4.5 stars - Crack The Sky's reign of excellence continues.......2005-07-02
Animal Notes (1976.) Crack The Sky's second album.
Safety In Numbers (1977.) Crack The Sky's third album.
One of the most underrated classic rock groups of all time was Crack The Sky. In the seventies, progressive rock reached a pinnacle it had never reached before and would never again reach. Unfortunately, many of the bands of this era were overlooked in favor of more commercially-successful groups of a similar styling. Crack The Sky is one of these long-forgotten prog rock acts of the seventies. The band's musc has been all but forgotten, by all but a small group of music fans. In recent years, the band's material was released on CD, in the form of twofer albums! Read on for the twofer of Animal Notes and Safety In Numbers, the group's second and third albums from 1976 and 1977, respectively.
The first of the two albums featured on this release is the group's sophomore effort, 1976's Animal Notes. This is one of the band's most unfairly bashed and overlooked albums. Since the band's first album set the bar pretty high, many fans don't give the second album enough of a chance - and it's definitely a bit more of aquired taste than their first album. But anyone who gives it a chance should grow to agree that it's a great album. The opening track, We Want Mine, is a catchy rocker that fuses rock with a plethora of musical styles. It's definitely one of the band's best songs and one of the most widely-praised ones present. Next up comes Animal Skins, the most different-sounding song on the album. Here the band uses sitars and goes for a middle-eastern sound. The end result is actually quite good. It gets followed up by Wet Teenager, a straight-up rocker you'd have to be a fool not to like - even if you're not a fan of the band. The semi-ballad, Maybe I Can Fool Everybody (Tonight) comes next, and it proves to be another one of the more popular and excellent songs featured on the album. A seven-minute-plus tune, Rangers At Midnight, comes immediately thereafter. This is a piano-heavy pop rocker that beautifully epitomizes what the band stood for musically. It's definitely one of their best tunes. Next up we have the classic rocker, Virgin... No. This cool little rocker is the tale of a boy who misses the younger days in his life. Witkowski's guitar playing is top-notch as usual. In Invaders From Mars, the piano is the primary instrument. Paired up with the rest of the band's instrumentation, you've got one hell of a song on your hands. Closing things out of the band's sophomore release is Play On. Essentially, it's a melodic, Beatles-esque ballad with plenty of acoustic instrumentation. And there you have it. Animal Notes is a great album that deserves more credit than it gets.
And then we get to 1977's Safety In Numbers, the band's third album. This is where original frontman John Palumbo left the band (although he DID write plenty of the material present on the album.) Surprisingly, his departure does NOT hurt the overall quality of the band! Kicking off the third album is Nuclear Apathy, one of the greatest songs the band ever recorded. The first two minutes are slow and soft, but it explodes into a straight-up rocker right after that! As the eight-minute-plus track progresses, there are plenty of musical style changes, and this keeps things interesting all the while. We get more of the straight-up, seventies-style rock on the album with the second track, Flashlight. No Crack The Sky album would be complete without a melodic ballad, and we get one in the form of Long Nights. It's definitely one of the band's best songs of that styling. Following it is the short instrumental Prelude To Safety In Numbers (for some unknown reason, though, the twofer DOES NOT have this piece of music.) It's a very short instrumental, but in that one short minute, the band shows off their musical abilities beautifully. Lighten Up McGraw and Give Myself To You are more of the classic seventies-style rockers we know and love the band for. While the former is more of a straight-up rocker, the latter leans more toward the prog rock trend the band displayed many a time. One of my personal favorite songs on the album is the underrated gem A Night On The Town (With Snow White.) This is a melodic, poppy rocker that sticks in your head long after you're done listening to it. It should have been more popular. Closing out album number three is the title track. A lengthy acoustic and melodic masterpiece, this song makes for the perfect closing piece to the album. Once again the band served up a solid release - even without Palumbo at the helm.
It's great that the band has finally reissued their work on CD - and even better that they chose to do twofers, but there's a huge flaw with this - MANY OF THE TWOFERS ARE MISSING TRACKS. For instance, this issue is lacking the Prelude To Safety In Numbers instrumental from the Safety In Numbers album. Hopefully if the band's material is issued again someday, these flaws will be corrected.
Crack The Sky proved beautifully with their second and third albums that they were one of the most excellent rock and roll bands of the seventies. It's such a shame they got overlooked in favor of so many other bands of the day who didn't have half as much talent. If you're a fan of seventies rock, progressive rock, classic rock, or you're just the kind of music fan who likes to try listening to new things, Crack The Sky will be right up your alley. Take my advice and start with their self-titled debut, and then move onto these two albums. Their first album is the most accessible, by far. These two are almost as good, but harder to get into. Final verdict? These are highly recommended albums.
yessss.......2002-06-22
One of my favourite alltime bands! Finally, the greatest album in CD format. I have the vinyl from 20 years ago...should have replaced it 15 years ago, but couldn't find it. Get the kids to listen to this, I bet they won't go back to the one-chord wonders of today.

My Favorite Live Album Just Got Better.......2006-01-10
Big Country were one of the most under-appreciated bands of the last 25 years, and if you want proof of this, just pick up this excellent live album and see them at the top of their game.
Recorded in Glasgow, Scotland's Barrowlands Ballroom in front of a rabid hometown crowd, this concert shows a band that had been around long enough to give a very polished, professional rock & roll show, while still retaining the energy and passion that made their early concerts so memorable.
The first 10 tracks are acoustic performances, giving an earthy, authentic folk-rock feel to classics like "Chance", "Harvest Home", "13 Valleys", and "The Storm". The electric portion of the set kicks off in fine fashion with "All Go Together", while "Look Away", "Wonderland", and "Long Way Home" have never sounded better. Thankfully, this edition of the complete concert includes the unlisted, "spontaneous" performance of "Wild Mountain Thyme", a Scottish folk classic that sounds right at home in the hands Mr. Adamson and company.
If you think "In A Big Country" was the only good song this band ever recorded, this album will be a real eye-opener. And if you have the one-disc version of this album released in 1994, this full version is well worth having, if only for the jaw-dropping, six-minute-plus version of "Fields Of Fire".
The only drawback to this CD is the annoying, unnecessary copy-protection, but apart from that, it's an incredibly satisfying, invigorating live album.

Album Description
The Locust's "Safety Second, Body Last" came as a follow up to 2003's highly acclaimed "Plague Soundscapes" (10/10 in Spin and NME). These brand spanking new recordings may be the bands most (GASP) acessible yet in their long slew of releases in the last ten years. "Safety Second, Body Last" flows like a classical symphony, flying through five movements at lightening speed. Produced by Alex Newport (At The Drive In, Melvins, Panthers and many more), the tension, anxiety and release presented in this piece is enough to last you a lifetime.
Customer Reviews:
Just love this record.......2007-04-07
It's short? C'mon. It's as long as it should be. For me, it sounds perfect. (Well, maybe the second "electronic part"'s a little to long. Maybe!). But I'll stop writing now as I'm enjoying this record for the 200th time. I just love that 10-minute-sound and I hope you open minded music freaks out there do love it too :)
In my opinion The Locust's a bright star on the music's sky, so give'em a try if you don't know them or even if you don't like'em. They may change your perception of the sounds called music and, hey!, isn't that really a lot???
what were you expecting?.......2006-12-29
Why the hell are people complaining about the length?
It's a Locust album... how long were you expecting the damn songs to be?
Long Songs from Locust.......2005-10-09
These are some of the longest and thoughtful songs put together by these men. When I say this I am not joking. I believe this is a special gift from this foursome which usually only gives us seconds to grasp the song. Now we have minutes. Some awesome sounds that come with the extended time. Wild, crazy and, cool. I love it.
Good, But Too Short.......2005-09-13
..Although, in saying that, it is an E.P after all. With "10" songs, i expected it to be around maybe 18-20 minutes, but in fact it's only 2 songs and in all this E.P goes for just over 10 minutes. So that aside, being really it's only downfall (that and the price for such a short E.P..i bought it at a music store and it was around 14-15 dollars) this seriously is an insane CD. The band themselves are quite eccentric too, which is cool to see in today's music scene. There are plenty of bands like The Locust though, you just have to look for them..
As for if this CD is good enough for you..all i can say is that if you're not already a fan of The Locust but enjoy listening to technical craziness, this is pretty much what you're looking for right here. The almost mechanical non-stop hyper-fast guitars, punky sort of screeching, drums that seem to go all over the place and the weird noises (I don't even know what they are) in the background every so often..really make this a unique E.P that you can listen to quite frequently, surprisingly. I normally listen to it before listening to "Plague Soundscapes", as it's a good sort of 'intro' to it..
I would rate this about 3.5/5. .."Plague Soundscapes" is also an excellent album too, so if you like this E.P then definitely check that out as well. Or even start with "Plague Soundscapes" instead..
Better than your genitals........2005-07-19
Oftimes, a reviewer will set up a dichotomy for the fans of a band: "You'll either love them or hate them." they'll say, and because most folks love some rules to throw around with conviction, this cry is taken up.
But this is not the case. I neither loved nor hated The Locust. For the duration of my relationship to their music, I always viewed them as a drug dealing friend: A cool guy to bring to parties, but I never wanted to turn my back on him.
Alas, I made that mistake with SAFETY SECOND, BODY LAST. I turned my back, and the house party that is my appreciation for music lost its mind, wound up in some dank club in the heart of a bloody metropolis, the concrete walls seeping decay, the morals and physics of the world assidiously warped faster than the switch from "Armless and Overactive" to "Who's Handling the Population Paste."
What changed? Why has this plague, that once festered externally found a way into my blackened innards to gnaw a way to my heart?
The music once pressed in on me with claustrophobic ferocity, and existed as this unrelenting wall. On PLAGUE SOUNDSCAPES, The Locust was at the listener with the gusto of starving Hyenas, scratching away with riffs and apocalyptic keyboard acrobatics that seared and gouged with no breathing space, like the thirty-second blasts called "songs" were really long drawn out epics, but nobody would wait their turn for their various solos.
In SAFETY SECOND, BODY LAST, there IS that breathing room, as frenzied spasms give way to jarring atmospherics. And, somehow, those gasps do little to instil hope in the listener for any palatability of the music, more like a glimpse of hope as one is drawn back for an instant to catch their breath in a spray and then plunged back into a bathtub filled with cheap beer, mescaline and blood.
Another interesting aspect is the length of the songs. Previously, Locust songs could count themselves lucky to break the one-minute mark. Here, there are two tracks, spanning five "movements" with sub-parts.
Perhaps a tongue-in-cheek commentary on The Mars Volta and Green Day's sudden success with overwrought concept albums, perhaps an ernest attempt at branching out.
This IS, in the end, an EP, though, and furthermore a LOCUST EP, so the two tracks clock in at just barely over ten minutes. (Split 6min/3+min) And while fans may decry the lack of all out, rabid attack, this is the sort of luxurious slaughter that separates a gang fight from a serial killer, as the Locust chain the listener to the chair, and leave their face a mass of mushroom bruises.
