Deep Cuts.......2007-06-05

Deep Cuts~ The Knife is a great album filled with well-produced electronic music. They sound like a mix of early 80's minimal synth-music like early human league and mix this up with sounding like Goldfrapp and other more modern synth bands. The lyrics are ok but one will never confuse the knife with great lyricists such as Martin Gore or Marian Gold. I love the sounds and they seem to have been picked by hand since every sound is just right for the track. The cover-art ( if you now can call it art, I have my doubts) is terrible and looks like a failed high-school project. The photo is terrible and the font is way to small and some of the colors make it even harder to read. Even so this is a great album and it definetely deserves its 4 stars. I highly recommend this album.

Worth it for "Heartbeats" alone.......2007-05-07

The album is all downhill after that first track, but what a hill to slide your way down! More than anything else, this strikes me as a hybrid of Black Cherry-era Goldfrapp and Teagan & Sara. In other words, driving electro backdrops plus girl vocals ranging somewhere between Marlene Dietrich and pouty adorability. The Swedish accent also puts some of this in Björk territory, though the song structures here are more traditional. Also lurking not too far in the background is 80s technopop stars Berlin; although "You Take My Breath Away" is not a cover, the keyboard line in "Girls' Night Out" owes a huge debt to "The Metro," and the generally tinny timbre of the electronics also hearkens back to the early days of digital synths.

So, in short: (Goldfrapp + Teagan & Sara) x Berlin ÷ Björk = The Knife. Enjoy!

Your mind will be reshaped.......2007-04-10

It's easy to find this music enthralling. The way it affects your senses, your mood, is completely different from anything you'll experience any time soon. The Knife is completely original.

While some tracks, like "The Cop," are too strange for my liking, tracks like "Heartbeats" and "Rock Classics" and of course the youtube hit "Pass This On" will truly stick with you. You never want to press skip on those.

not as good as Silent Shout but still worth listening.......2007-03-09

Nothing beats Silent Shout (an album with no bad tracks in my opinion and one of my favorite albums ever), but there are some great cuts on this album (Heartbeats, 3 remixes of tracks, You Make Me Like Charity, The Bridge). Deep Cuts is a bit more poppy and not nearly as refined as Silent Shout. Definitely worth buying though if you're a fan of The Knife. Do anything you can to see them live.

Blast from the past.......2007-01-09

This is a great collection of Twisted Sister. I definitely would recommend this to any fan of Twisted Sister. You can't find this type of good rock n' roll anymore!

Cover doesn't say "GREATEST HITS".......2006-11-21

I have been a huge Twisted fan for over 25 years. I watched them evolve from their small club dates in upstate New York to their immense popularity in the mid eighties. I sadly watched as internal turmoil tore this band apart in the late eighties, was pleasantly surprised by their collaboration for "Heroes Are Hards To Find" from Dee's Strangeland movie and impressed by their reunion after 9/11. It was like they never left. However, for those of you who disapprove of this recording, please see that the cover does not say "Greatest Hits". Twisted was not about "greatest hits". They were about great music. Sure, they could have included great cuts like "Come Out And Play" or "Wake Up (the Sleeping Giant" (which may be, admittedly, one of their best tracks). However, they included several "live" tracks which is what makes them special. If you have never seen a "live" show, catch them before it is too late. They are the rare band who are amazing "live". Studio recordings do not do them justice. Okay, so not all of their best songs are included here. If you want all their great music, suck it up and buy their other CD's. You won't regret it. But, what IS here is what they were all about... great band and great music. Live on SMF's...

Twisted Sister Rocks!.......2006-08-30

In continuation of the so-called Reagen Rock years, this compilation lives up to its name. Who doesn't love the groove from "I Wanna Rock"?

People, the name of the CD is "big Hits and Nasty Cuts", not "Twisted Sister's Greatest Hits and Nothing else." As a loooooong time Ts fan, I love the fact that this CD represents the full picture of the band. Sure, they had some huge hits in the hayday of hair metal, but in the late 70s and early 80s, they were one of the most vicious live acts around in terms of their intensity. the live tracks recorded at the Marquee Club in London show just how intense they were before their radio-friendly hits were recorded. I think the name of the CD says it all and no one should be surprised at what they are getting when they buy it. The Cd has equal helpings of their most well-known hits, as well as just enough early live stuff to show you what they sounded like before they were the darlings of MTV.

Best compilation CD ever.......2007-02-18

Carl Stalling gave me the best musical education I ever had. I'm spending the rest of my life learning the titles and composers of all the hundreds of tunes I first heard in his cartoon scores. I've had this CD ever since it came out, and it still is one of my favorites.

Only a handful of tracks are a complete score from one cartoon; most are snippets from several cartoons edited together with a common theme.

This CD is about a composer and his music, more than about the cartoons for which he composed it. To drive home this point, it includes the score from, of all things, 1939's "The Good Egg." No one would consider "The Good Egg" to be among the best Warner cartoons, but the score, heard by itself, turns out to be a tour de force that is highly representative of Stalling's work. That's what makes this CD such a great listening experience: It was pieced together by musicologists who chose the music based on its auditory qualities, and not on the relative fame of the cartoon associated with it. It is not merely a trip down memory lane (although it is that, too), but is a great creative work in its own right.

Despite the vast amount of Stalling music that exists, this CD provides as ambitious and exhaustive an overview as can be given, and its 1995 follow-up, while also worth having, is but a pale afterthought. There's no following this act.

This CD features music from the Warner Brothers cartoon film scores by Carl Stalling. There are some complete scores and also some "medleys", with clips from various cartoons strung together. Carl Stalling was a master at writing music for cartoons, but something is lost when you just hear the music without seeing the cartoon.

If you harken back to the days when you snuggled on the couch on a Saturday morning with your little ones, and ate donuts and drank juice and watched "Bugs Bunny" you will love these CDs. You'll recognize all the characters and their entrances and their pratfalls...and laugh and say "I've heard that!"...it's a walk down memory lane and a very special one, at that. I highly reccommend these to anyone who loves B Bunny.
Not to mention these are some of the finest musicians you will ever hear...a lesson in classical music, and cartoons.

Carl Stalling was the chief music arranger for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. He was one of the foremost composers of cartoon music. This disk is much better than "The Carl Stalling Project Volume II."

Warner Brother's King of Music.......2003-12-02

Even if you do not recognize his name, Carl Stalling is a very familiar composer. He wrote the soundtrack for many of our young lives as the composer for Warner Bros.' "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons from late 1930's to late 1970's. Hal Willner has compiled this CD that for the first time lets you hear the music on its own, and lets you realize just how much of the cartoons' impact came from Stalling's music.

Willner sifted through hundreds of cartoons to choose about 40 with the most significant music. He presents the music in a variety of formats. A few tracks provide the soundtrack for a single entire cartoon. Others are medlies from a certain period in Stalling's career or pieces that set a particular mood (such as the "Anxiety Montage"). There are also tapes from recording sessions for 1951's "Putty Tat Trouble" that give insight on how this music was recorded. I couldn't recommend this CD any more highly. (After you've given it a listen, check out a Raymond Scott "best of" album like "Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights" to see just how many of its tracks are familiar from various cartoons.)

Stalling's music, instead of following the traditional rules of musical structure (exposition, development, theme, variations, etc.), was written to follow the rapid action of cartoons. Stalling would not compromise on this, even if it meant having the 50-piece orchestra play fortissimo for five seconds and then having only one piccolo playing the next four seconds. To ensure a perfect correspondence between the sound and the image, Stalling and the cartoon's directors would agree on a few sketches and on the timing of the action. This enabled Stalling to compose and record the music without even seeing the movie. Carl Stalling was also a master at telling a story through music, with gestures so clear, that there is never any doubt as to his intentions.

Stalling once said, "One problem with cartoons today is that they have so much dialogue the music doesn't mean much." Unfortunately, this statement rings true as we move into 2004. But keeping Carl Stalling from rolling in his grave is not why you need to buy this CD. You need it because it is IMPOSSIBLE to maintain a bad mood while this CD is playing. You need this to listen to as a stress reducer on those tough days. You need this because it is complete childhood in a disc.

I challenge you to turn on your television and watch some Looney Tunes. Turn up the volume and listen while doing something else (wash dishes, write a paper perhaps.) I guarantee you will know exactly what is happening, and to whom. This was the comedic skill and genius talent of Carl Stalling.

As Porky Pig would say: "abieh-abieh-abieh... That's All Folks!"

Wonderful Collection of Mostly Previously Unavailable Music.......2007-07-20

Caveat: You probably have to like country blues to like this set. If you don't you may be put off.

If you are familiar with this style of music this is a treasure trove. Among other things there are recordings by Freddie Spruell, and the only appearances on record of the legendary Hacksaw Harney (as an accompanist to piano player Walter Rhodes.) Other highlights include the four acoustic tunes recorded by Robert Lockwood, Jr,the recently discovered Son House recording (Mississippi County Farm and Clarksdale Moan) and records by the brothers Joe and Charlie McCoy including a delightful version of the song Skip James recorded as Devil Got My Woman called here Evil Devil Woman.

The sound is very good for the money. Someone like the late John R. T. Davies probably could have made them all sound like pristine electric 78s but these are remarkably free of noise, particularly the annoying crackle that often came from Paramount discs straight from the factory. Remember too that a lot of these are acoustic recordings and are more limited in frequency and dynamic range than the electrical recordings that started in the later 1920s.

If you're interested in country blues and want a good sample of the styles that were popular in Mississippi in the 20s and 30s this is well worth the money. I think it's worth it because it's darned good music but that's only my opinion; I may be right; I may be wrong.

Real Blues for Real People.......2007-06-16

This is the way it is supposed to sound. Why some people think that old 78's will magically sound like current digital recordings is beyond belief! That aside, this is a GREAT collection of country delta blues played by real people who lived the blues. This is the real deal for a very reasonable price. The neat thing about collections like this is that you hear real blues from different people with different styles. This is how you expand your appreciation. This is how you learn. This is how your grow. Get over the occasional nicks and scratches in the sound; think of it as adding to the experience, and appreciate what is being performed. This stuff is really great!

Rare but fine Country Blues of the Highest Caliber.......2007-05-13

JSP continues to challenge Yazoo and Document records with their re-releases (with very good mastering to boot) of country blues and this set is no exception. For 25 bucks you get some of the finest and rarest country blues put to shellac (this set was mastered from 80-year old 78's where in some cases, only 1 or 2 copies is known to exist).

Unfortunately, some of these artists recorded for Paramount records, a company notorious for manufacturing records that would self-destruct after 20 plays.

Don't be discouraged by the sound quality; in most cases on this set, it is exemplary considering that the bulk of this material was recorded before 1930. What we have here are some of the earliest examples of country blues (i.e. Freddie Spruell), pure and unaffected because it preceded the advent of radio airplay and music company marketing hyperbole.

Those who have not reveled in the fabulous bottleneck playing and tortured singing of Sam Butler (Bo Weevil Jackson) or King Solomon Hill (Joe Holmes) are missing the origins of much popular "roots" music and the regional musical styles that existed before the depression.

Similarly, listen to the late Robert Lockwood's earliest acoustic sides before he went on to embellish Sonny Boy Williamson's (Willie Rice Miller) and Little Walter's most famous Chess material, and Otis Spann's beautiful recordings for Candid records.

This set has too many superlatives to mention in an Amazon review, but it must be said that these recordings, although performed when the term "indigenous music" could be applied without exaggeration, were to become a major influence on so much of the popular music that followed it 10 and 20 years later.

As always, JSP has delivered a lot for a little. If you have any interest in pre-war country blues, it doesn't come any better than this.

Mississippi Blues.......2007-05-12

We were anxious to receive the CDs as we are avid listeners of Blues and Jazz music. However were disappointed at the quality of the music. It was scratchy and difficult to hear. We thought it would have been digitally updated but found it was not. We are sorry we purchased the CDs.

A collection of Steve's finest work from his Magna Carta sessions Bonus: 11 minute video interview with Steve. Steve Morse performing with Terry Bozzio, Dave LaRue, James Murphy, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Van Romaine, Jordan Rudess, Billy Sheehan and Mark Wood.

Take almost anything Morse does on these compositions, whether it's the ever-darting, constantly modulating ostinato on "Heightened Awareness", or the thematic line from "Busybodies", or perhaps the dense layers of "Wooden Music". You will notice that melody always takes precedence. Mind you, you' ll also get a good dose of speed and heightened articulation: Perhaps this is what happens when a left-handed player turns the guitar around and plays it the "right" way. It places his stronger hand on the neck, promoting dexterity—and adding a certain "meat" to the tone. Morse's lines don't whither or trail off. Of course, this is very much a conscious effort and has much to do with his right hand picking virtually every note—not a lot of slurring going on! Also key to his unique sound is the design of his instrument, one that has evolved from the early years when he employed multiple pickups to catch every string nuance.

Steve wears his southern influences on his sleeve. While his tone speaks of the blues greats, it also twangs of the country. Listen to the way he handles the Yes standard, "The Clap". No question, Morse can hang with the likes of Albert Lee any day.

Aside from deep country and that Dixie funk, Morse exhibits a huge variety of guitar influences, from Steve Howe to John McLaughlin, the latter who seemed to define for a generation the proper ratio of jazz to rock. Then there's this pervasive baroque thing, almost Mozart like in its staccato phrases and Bach like in its serenity—evidence, perhaps, of Steve's classical studies in Florida (check out "Air on a 6-String" or the figure that begins around 00.50 on "Prognosis"). No wonder he used to typify his work as "modern chamber music"!

very original with righteous La Villa cover.......2007-05-10

If for no other reason, buy this strictly for the La Villa Strangiato cover. It is obvious to me that Steve uses this song as a warm-up; for he effortlessly shreds this composition from top to bottom in a truly unique and fresh way. I never thought it possible to improve on this song; but somehow Steve's guitar aggressively explores a new dimension - all in the spirit of the Rush original.

Aside from this cover, almost all other songs layer creative and fresh musical compositions that both sound good and demonstrate Steve's amazing musicianship.

Other talented guitarists aim to prove their worthiness by cramming a bazillion sixty-fourth notes into each passing measure. Steve knows better.

Prime time!.......2005-11-14

I just bought "Prime Cuts" and "Rapture of the Deep" by Deep Purple (featuring Morse on guitar). Both albums are enjoyable in different ways. "Prime Cuts" shows off Steve's guitar work on this instrumental disc. "Rapture of the Deep" shows Steve blending in with the other musicians of Deep Purple. A powerful rock album.

While not the best way to get started on your collection of Steve Morse's music, for those of us who have everything else, it is a way to hear a cut or two you may not have.

I didn't have the RUSH tribute cut in my collection, for example.

Any Steve Morse cut is worth having.

By the way, I just got to see Deep Purple again and that may be another way to add to your collection of Steve's music. All of their material from the last 10 years is heavily laced with Steve's influence.

In the mid '90s, Wall of Voodoo mainstay-turned-solo artist Stan Ridgway bid farewell to the major label treadmill via Drywall's masterfully dark debut and embarked on an indie career as the more historically-rooted, acoustically-centered singer-songwriter found of the compelling Black Diamond, Snakebite and Anatomy albums. The original Drywall concept ("a trilogy of apocalyptic documents") seemed intended to variously antagonize his then-label, subtly evoke his Wall of Voodoo past and offer outlet for his latent "mad scientist" tendencies. But Ridgway has completed that decade-spanning triptych with an album that's closer in tone to his elegiac modern solo work (his main accomplices here are also the same, keyboardist/vocalist Pietra Wextun and guitarist Rick King), if no less thematically provocative than DW's first installment. The infectious, industrialized zydeco of "Goin' On Down to the BBQ" revolves around a typically debauched Ridgway storyline, while elsewhere Stan variously stirs in jazz (the saxed-up "Fortune Cookies"), cinematic cool (the evocative "Somewhere in the Dark" and "Rain On Down") and even folk conceits both nautical ("Abandon Ship," "Robbers & Bandits & Bastards & Thieves") and Celtic (Wexstun's haunting "Bold Marauder"). "The AARP is After Me" and tipsy "Something's Gonna Blow" are filled with typically self-deprecating Ridgway wit, while the electro-edginess of "In Total Focus" and "That Big Weird Thing" contrast sharply with the stark beauty of the morally ambiguous ballad "Buried the Pope." Drywall closes out their first trilogy in rich, expansive style - and ultimately leaves listeners hoping they'll embark on another soon. --Jerry McCulley

I love Stan Ridgway - witness my extensive collection of CDs and ticket stubs. I think he and Peitra are national treasures.
However.....
I have to say I found this album very hard to get my mind around. I am no stranger to music that is (more than a little) outre'. And I am willing to give anything involving Stan a chance. Several chances. But I honestly didn't enjoy this album. (Sorry Stan)

But it won't keep me from buying the next one!

All of Stan's work has shown a deep suspicion of the industrial-military complex, heaped and blended with existential nihilism. I never took such a dim view of American life personally, but appreciated his artistic window into the darker side of society. For the record I'm a right-of-center, Republican-leaner who voted for Bush twice and I found track sixteen to be clever and, yes, a bit childish, but fun and I enjoy childish fun even when it steps on my idealogical toes. That being said the rest of the CD is delightfully quirky, loaded with imagery both dark and campy, and sprinkled with childish fun. And very true to Ridgway form this CD is yet another deadpan narrative description of the writhing scaly spectacle that is modernity's underbelly. It's kind of like David Lynch for the ears. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that I didn't feel it rose to the level of "Work the Dumb Oracle".

A Masterpiece of Strange / Pop Art for 2006.......2006-04-22

Continuing an on-again/off-again relationship with his Drywall side project that began in 1986 with Work the Dumb Oracle, the third album in Stan Ridgway's "trilogy of apocalyptic documents" isn't substantially different from his better-known solo work, at least on this 2006 release. His carnival barker vocals, bizarre lyrics, and shapeshifting cinematic soundscapes are in fine twisted form as the songs morph from the moody, bluesy harmonica-laced "Bury the Pope" to the more experimental subtle electronica textures of "Rain on Down" and the whimsical, Tex-Mex party atmosphere of "Goin' on Down to the BBQ." Co-Drywall conspirators/multi-instrumentalists Pietra Wexstun and especially Rick King are relegated to sideline status as Ridgway's distinctive vocals and lyrics dominate the proceedings. The diverse sounds combine aspects of Tom Waits (the percussive "The Alibi Room" sounds like an outtake from Rain Dogs), jazzy noir lounge ("Somewhere in the Dark"), Yello ("That Big Weird Thing"), and even world music ("Bold Marauder" is sung by Wexstun doing her best Grace Slick impression), but ultimately seem like Ridgway pushing his already elastic musical boundaries. At just over an hour, including a humorous bonus track that features sentences from George W. Bush speeches cut-and-pasted to mean something far different than what was originally intended, there is a lot to listen to here. Each track is overdubbed multiple times with layers of sound effects and instruments requiring repeated listenings to fully absorb. As with many Ridgway projects, the lyrical theme is obtuse but the music is so challenging, quirky, and innovative that the whole shebang is a mesmerizing musical trip. Anyone already a Ridgway fan will be thrilled, and open-minded newcomers might find enough of interest here to seek out his earlier, arguably more cohesive albums. Barbeque Babylon is a fun, often but not always lighthearted romp with the participants obviously enjoying themselves by painting a sonic palette the equivalent of '60s pop art. Part pastiche, part storytelling, and part experimental, the album finds Ridgway at the peak of his powers, creating music that demands attention even if at times it doesn't take itself seriously.

Track 16 is ridiculous.......2006-02-10

While I have Stan's full collection of solo stuff and love it, this album may not stay in my collection. There are some fantastic songs and truly innovating and amazinginly talented musicality on this one that we expect and usually get from Stan by the truckload. But I'm writing my comments primarily for the untitled #16 track. I'm not a republican or a democrat. Politics has nothing to do with it but the disrespect and childish editing of the President is embarrassing. The time, technology and (what they may of thought as cool) effort that they put in to making this stupid and over the top ridiculous word editing joke ruins the whole album for me. Perhps a few lines intended to make a point and reflect a measure of personal view would be "artistic" and acceptable but Drywall goes way too far with what they're saying here. A display of that much anti-american sentiment makes me think Drywall should move to Iraq and open up a recording studio there and tour the middle east, North Korea and Afganistan. Free expression, personal point of view and the right to say them are God given rights. But track 16 is just simply bad form, bad taste and childish. I would feel the same way if they did this obsurdity to Clinton as well. Track 16 isn't politics just stupid, really stupid.

I'm here to tell you this is the best Stan Ridgway CD! A fan since the vinyl days of Wall of Voodoo, heard all the solo stuff (great, get it!), but this album is an absolute must buy. Killer stuff, classic Ridgway. The best yet!!

My kids really like this!.......2007-07-30

My kids, 6 1/2 and 3 years, really like this CD. They LOVE "Cantelope" and "Look at me now" songs. I gave it 4 stars because they totally love the Toddlers CD she has, which has to be 5 stars. I love that too! So sweet and doesn't make you crazy like some other CD's I have to play over and over...and over.

Great for kids of all ages.......2006-06-29

I have seen Sara perform twice now--the last time with her older daughter along with her. She is great with kids and her songs are catchy, easily learned and have wonderful messages in them. Look at me....a song that all parents should listen to and every kid should learn to sing. This album includes all of her older kid material..it will have you singing, clapping and wanting more. The final song on the album is beautiful and bittersweet and makes for a great lullaby. It's a wonderful collection. If you have the chance to see her perform...it's well worth the effort.

A great cross-section.......2006-12-06

"Prime Cuts" is a best-of album so, you either like ST or you don't. Being a 20-year ST fan, I love having a cross-section of their material. (Personally, I was surprised the "Controlled by Hatred" didn't make the cut (no pun intended). If you're not a ST fan, then this is a great introduction. They never really made it big but they had some great material. Any interest in skater-thrash or metal? If so, ST is for you.

Strange selection of "best" ST songs.......2006-11-16

This album only gets three stars from me because I genuinely believe they could have gone for a much better "best of" selection than they did. Gotta Kill Captain Stupid and Lovely wouldn't touch my top 20 ST songs. Having said that, it's still ST so it's gotta be great.

I had this album years ago when i was in high school, for some unknown reason (young and stupid is probably a good guess), i sold it. For years i've missed the sounds of ST and wished i had it still. I'm glad i bought it again.

Pedants would be forced to admit that this band is class. They're awesome live and are still trying to keep it real despite the detractors who want to criticise everything these guys do! Suicidal have provided just about everything to music and never get the appreciation.

At least they were bothered re-recording songs instead of just re-releasing them. The quality of music is high.

The variety is awesome.

Well,what do you know?I was rummaging through some CD's I haven't heard in awhile and I came across this.'Prime Cuts' features tunes from five out of eight(at the time of this release,anyway)S.T. albums,plus two new songs "Beserk" and "Feed The Addiction".I've never been all THAT huge of a Suicidal fan,but I've always liked some of their better known material,here like "Institutionalized",their total ass kick-in-the-groin "Pledge Your Allegiance" and "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow".An added bonus to this disc is the art that appears on the back cover.Top of the line punk/thrash.Check it out.A should-have.

Covers Yes - But Professional And Polished.......2007-07-30

When the subject of "covers" from the mid to late fifties is broached, more often than not the Crew Cuts will be mentioned as the leading proponents of this "unspeakably evil" practice - as the critics would like you to believe. Hogwash.

That's like saying they [along with Pat Boone, The Diamonds, and other villified artists and their record companies] should have been "better sports" and allowed the small labels to slowly spread their offerings without competition. In other words, while it was OK for Columbia to compete with RCA or Decca on any given song, it was wrong for them and their artists to do so if the song came from a small label like Cat, for example. Somehow, this just doesn't ring true in the land of free enterprise.

Yes, The Crew Cuts did cover a number of small label hits, among them the immortal Sh-Boom in 1954, but for the most part their covers were better, and that first one was no exception. I don't dislike the original version by The Chords, but then again I didn't live in L.A. and, given the ability of Cat to cut and distribute increased quantities internationally, it might have been 1956 before any reached Canada, never mind the East Coast of the U.S. Sure, some big company could have negotiated a deal to buy out The Chords' contract from Cat, but that takes time and since Mercury had just signed a group to a contract, why not let them cut the record?

The second male quartet to emerge from St. Michael's College in Toronto [The Four Lads preceded them], lead John Perkins, brother Ray (bass), tenor Pat Barrett and baritone Rudy Maugeri had started out as The Canadaires, and it was Crazy 'Bout Ya Baby, penned by Pat and Rudi, that had caught the ears of Mercury executives. Peaking at # 8 Pop in the summer of 1954 it was quickly followed by Sh-Boom which stayed on the charts for 20 weeks, including 9 straight at # 1. It couldn't have been all due to promotion.

Their next cover was of a Shirly Gunter tune, Oop-Shoop, which enjoyed modest success, going to # 13 in October 1954. Again, Shirley's label, Flair, simply lacked the ability to compete with Mercury. But by the time 1955 rolled around, and following the rise of black artists like Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and Little Richard, the buying public was more aware and on the lookout for small label artists.

The Penguins proved that to some extent with their original version of Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine) on DooTone. Released late in 1954, it soared to # 1 R&B and # 8 Billboard Top 100 in the early part of 1955. Even so, The Crew Cuts' version went higher in the Top 100, peaking at # 3 and, just for good measure, the flip-side, Ko Ko Mo (I Love You So) topped out at # 6, losing out only to the Perry Como cut. Once more the loser in pop sales was the original Gene & Eunice offering on the small Combo label, which hit # 6 R&B and, to me at least, was the better of the three.

Three more covers emerged in 1955, Don't Be Angry (# 14 Top 100) which justifiably beat out the Nappy Brown Savoy original (# 2 R&B/# 25 Top 100), A Story Untold (# 16) which admittedly wasn't quite as good as The Nutmegs' version on Herald (# 2 R&B), and Gum Drop (# 10) with which Otis Williams & The Charms couldn't even dent the R&B charts Top 100.

The next release, Angels In The Sky b/w Mostly Martha, covered no one and still went to # 11 and 31 Top 100 respectively early in 1956. Several artists then covered Clyde McPhatter's Seven Days in 1956, but while Dorothy Collins had the highest ranked version at # 17, followed closely by The Crew Cuts at # 18, Clyde's, released on Atlantic, was the better one for my money, hitting # 2 R&B and # 44 Top 100.

The group's final Top 40 hit was Young Love in 1957. Not a bad rendition, and while nowhere near Country singer Sonny James' offering which went to # 1 Top 100, # 1 Country AND # 3 R&B, it was certainly better than the Tab Hunter record which also - inexplicably - went # 1 Top 100.

Please don't be swayed by the anti-cover hype. This was a very good singing group that deserves more credit for their fine efforts than most historians are willing to grant. You will also enjoy quality sound reproduction, not to mention the 4 pages of liner notes written by Joseph F. Laredo in the insert, which also contains a complete discography of the contents and a great shot of the quartet at work in the studio.

Life could be dream.......2007-04-05

If you wish to dive deep into the 50's this disc should be your choice. I was not familiar with The Crew Cuts before and was relying solely on their hit "Sh-boom (Life could be dream)" Their music is satisfying to those who love 50's. However, if you not sure if you totally in love with this kind of music try a CD with variety of artists.

CREW CUTS MEDIUM WELL DONE.......2006-08-02

THIS CD HAS A LOT OF SONGS THAT OTHERS MADE HITS. THE CREW CUTS VERSIONS OF THOSE SONGS ARE DISAPPOINTING. HOWEVER THEIR SIGNATURE TUNES ARE GREAT.

A very good collection of a very underrated group's work.......2004-08-12

The Crew Cuts were a Canadian group which had a number of hits back in the 1950s. The songs were, by and large, "covers": songsthat had been done by rhythm & blues groups,which they redid in a style better suited to the majority's tastes of the day. As such, they are badly vilified by r&b devotees, who seem to treat the cover versions as desecrations of holy objects. Well, I was, back then, one of that big majority that preferred the covers to the r&b original, and I still, 50 years later, do. This CD includes all the big Crew Cuts hits, including "Sh-Boom" and "Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)" which were the biggest. It also includes aome covers that never charted (where other artists had the hit version) like "Young Love" and "Two Hearts, Two Kisses (Make One Love)." And it includes some songs I've never heard by any artist before. I've always liked the Crew Cuts' sound, and as I've already said here, thought their covers were better than the originals, so, no surprise, I like this album. If you're into r&B, you won't. But if your taste agrees with mine, you'll be happy if you buy this CD.

Best of the Crew Cuts.......2002-04-29

Actually, I have the best of the Crew Cuts. My Husband, Pat Barrett, is one of them and, of course, I think he is the best.

We both enjoyed listening to the tape. There are a few songs that Pat was not crazy about, but, all in all, it was great.
