5 out of 5 stars Excellent Symphonic Metal in the style of Nightwish.......2006-01-23

When I want to find this CD, I know exactly where to find it; in my five disc, CD player. While other CDs in my player have come and gone, Lunatica has occupied the coveted number one disc position for at least two months.

Honestly, there isn't anything particularly outstanding about this Swiss Symphonic, Femme Metal sextet or there music for that matter. Their attraction, for me at least, seems to be that their music is just so pleasant to listen too. In fact the opening song, "The search goes on," bears a remarkable resemblance to the opening theme song from The Fellowship of the Rings and the last song, "A little moment of desperation" reminds me of Blackmore's Night's "Fires at Midnight."

I'm not accusing Lunatica of plagiarism. I'm sure at least the melody for "Fire at Midnight" and probably the theme from The Fellowship of the Rings has been floating around Europe for hundreds of years. What I am accusing Lunatica of is poor judgment in their choice for a band name. Maybe it means something else in whichever of the three languages they speak in Switzerland but still the lyrics are in English so you'd think they'd come up with a catchy name that didn't make them sound like a group of lunatics. Seriously, with the name Lunatica, wouldn't you suspect it was a Death Metal Band. Well, they could,'t be farther from Death Metal.

Speaking of Blackmore's Night, Lunitica's excellent lead singer, Andrea sounds a little like Blackmore's Night, his wife, Candice Night that is. If you have heard Candice, you know that is a big plus. Another big plus is these guys sound an awful lot like Nightwish, sans Tarja, which happens to be the way Nightwish is now. Honestly, I'm not particularly sorry to see Tarja go. Her vocals were a tad too stiff and formal, too operatic for me.

    Conclusion

As I mentioned, Lunatica's music is similar to Nightwish. It's also a lot like Visions of Atlantis, who I've compared to Nightwish. Coincidently Lunatica's debut album was simply titled Atlantis and this follow-up is a concept album of the continuing story of, you guessed it - Atlantis. I guess Atlantis is big in this genre.

Now if you're wondering, other than comparisons to other bands what Lunatica sounds like, I will try to tell you. The music is highly melodic and structured. It's hard to tell in this day and age of layering but many of the songs if not all are backed by an orchestra. The leadoff song, "The search goes on"starts with one of the male band members reciting a dialogue, telling the story, while an orchestral intro continues in the background, morphing into a grandiose finish. This leads into an uptempo version of the same melody, "Avalon"with Andrea at the mic.

All the songs except track one and track four are up tempo rock sounding. Track four, the title track is a ballad that was released in Europe as a single. Track six, "The Spell" is a little different because one of the men in the band keeps repeating - "I can't stop now, I'm losing my brain," while a dog barks. It's similar to what Evanescence and Lacuna Coil have done, Nightwish too, come to think of it but it's just different enough to be cute. The last track, while still a rock number, has a medieval folk feel to it. If Fables and Dreams has a weakness, it's that the recording is fairly homogenous. There isn't a lot of variety. Obviously, it doesn't bother me because it's still in my CD player but it would have been nice to have more variety. Best songs: "The Spell" and "Silent Scream." Final rating 4 ½ stars

4 out of 5 stars Great debut album by Lunatica.......2005-10-20

I truly found this symphonic metal album excellent. What can I say? I highly recommend it for those who are not quite familiar with this type of music and are exploring with curiosity. For those who are very familiar with this genre - I say its a MUST!
There are several symphonic metal bands out there which are between good and mediocre, but this one offers some mysticism in terms of lyrics, voice, and of course, sound. Everything is fine with this one as it will transport you to a new level of quality music. The songs are as following:
1)The search goes on - I won't be reviewing this track because is a mere intro with cool sound at least.
2)Avalon - a good song with mild velocity and fantasy in it (A)
3)Elements - interesting lyrics and sound. A little bit slower than the first track, but amusing (B)
4)Fable of dreams - this is more a symphonic metal sound falling into a ballad, but it won't dissapoint a bit. The interaction between both singers in this one is awesome (B)
5)Still believe - this one ascends from ballad to symphonic metal, and it is quite enchanting as the previous track (B)
6)The spell - this one follows the same pattern as Avalon, it is fantastic to resume (A)
7)The neverending story - don't be confused with the movie (just a slight joke there). This one is perhaps a fusion of tracks 4 and 5, the mixture of velocity and smoothness is excellent (A)
8)Hymn - this one has like a glorious sound into it, but still it is great to listen (A)
9)Silent scream - my favorite track. This one is just mesmerizing to resume. Great performance and lyrics (A)
10)A little moment of desperation - another favorite track right here. It comes close in sound and performance as the previous track. I found this one repetitive to listen (A)
I give this album a solid A (A is 4, so that explains the 4 star rating). The band's performance, Andrea's sweet yet cunning voice, the fantastic yet mysterious lyrics - its all well organized for an opening album, I'm impressed. Finally, if you want to hear something different, don't hesitate, the album is breathtaking. Buy it if you have the chance.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-07-04

I love this album! I was hooked on it starting with the first song, which is a symphonic intro to the rest of the album. Andrea, the lead singer, sings the rest of the songs and her voice is gorgeous. On "The Spell" she gets vocal support from one of her band members. No grunts on this album. The music great, too, the way symphonic metal should be.
My favorites on this album are "Avalon", "Still Believe", and "A Little Moment of Desperation". Heck, I like them all, lol! I can't wait to get more from this band!! For a debut this is pristine! I would advise you to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME METAL MASTERPIECE!!!.......2006-12-12

Flotsam continue to amaze me after all thses years!!! They still come out with great albums that have the thrash sound of yesteryear that so many band loose. Listen to Straight To Hell and you'll see what I mean!!! ROCK ON FLOTSAM!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work !.......2006-09-09

After getting burned by Helloween and Queensryche's latest bombs, I almost put this on the "Never play me again" shelf ( that's where Operation Mindcrime II and Keeper of the Seven Keys III are now.) A good set of headphones helped alot. Overall, a very excellent piece of work from an excellent band whose first album ( Doomsday For the Deceiver ) I bought as a teen. Tight guitars and drums, clear vocals, and some backward tracks blended in ( thats where the USB headphones made the difference.)

4 out of 5 stars good album for a great band.......2005-11-29

Dreams of Death- a concept album, if I got this right, this is about a man who realizes is a killer and then separates dreams from reality and drowns in sorrow. Eric sings great as usual and the lyrics are very smart. The band is tight and clean. I love the fact that the n. of songs is limited (a recent trend in metal) rather than including filler. A nice little CD that is currently on hot rotation on my Linn system in good company with the children of bodom, the great opeth, gamma ray and the new halloween!

2 out of 5 stars review from the Synthesis.......2005-11-03

There's a time when you have to sigh, reluctantly resign and surrender your place of fame to some promising up-and-comers. This isn't necessarily an age issue; it's more about what is relevant. Some things are happening now; other things, like this latest release from Flotsam and Jetsam, were happening about 10-15 years ago. Everything about it is typical: the power metal riffs, the very Metallica-esque vocals, the same old guitar solos, the relentless drumming, the classic and consistent thrash metal sound, lyrics about demons and dreams and even the standard ballad. So guys, it seems to be about that time. As Buddha says, "Like every living thing, in the end it sickens and dies."

5 out of 5 stars They did it again!.......2005-09-01

This is yet another classic for everyone who loves Metal! Great riffs, catchy hooks and enough speed to send you thrashing through the room. Eric A.K.'s singing is great as always and hasn't suffered since their debut. There are not a lot of bands around these days that have lasted this long and have managed to evolve while staying true to the Metal formula of heavy riffing, fast paced double bass drumming and daring vocals. Even the greater names in Metal can't seem to evolve and stay true to this. Either they keep repeating themselves or they get whimpy! Well Flotsam and Jetsam released another masterpeace with this ninth (9) album to date. What has it got you ask? Fast paced thrash songs, a heavy ballad and a great introspective instrumental.
So what if sometimes you hear some familiar things in their music?? That's just the Flotsam sound and that makes you realize that this is another classic from these Metal maniacs!

          Album Description

The Scottish band Pallas are one of the best representatives of sophisticated British progressive rock. Their releases are always something really special. They create in their own studio, located in the heart of the beautiful countryside of Aberdeen, stunning songs with impressive lyrics. On their new opus, the lyrics are about everyone's dreams but due to people's social background they vary. The Dreams of Men, on the whole, stands for this variety. The new Pallas album is a demonstration of contemporary progressive rock with a powerful and modern sound!

          5 out of 5 stars PALLAS - INVINCIBLE NEO.......2006-02-18

Scotland's Pallas were once part of the U.K. art-rock scene of the early 80's along with Marillion,IQ, Pendragon and Twelvth Night, and return here with one of the top records of 2005 in the often called 'neo-prog' genre. Four years has passed since their excellent 'Cross & The Crucible' album from 2001, and although Pallas releases are few and far between, it is often worth the wait.

'Dreams Of Men' continues in the more symphonic direction they embarked on when they first returned to active service in 1998 with their 'Beat the Drum' album, and here they waste no time making up for lost time with a solid- though lengthy- 70+ minutes of cinematic and melodic rock which goes through many moods and textures ranging from dramatic orchestral washes to heavier, almost prog-metal guitar bite. This is modern Neo with some meat on the bones, and though this lengthy disc is filled to the end with music, it's solid and still merits repeat listenings. Lyrically, 'Dreams' has a loose concept about, well, the dreams of mankind- what drives us, our hearts desires, our darkests fears and anxieties. Cheery stuff, I know, and occasionally preachy, but the songs stand alone, so any linking thread can be irrelevant. The album starts off powerful, but the best material is towards the end.

The line-up remains the same as ever: guitarist Niall Mathewson, keyboardist Ronnie Brown, drummer Colin Fraser, Graeme Murray playing some fine Chris Squire-esque bass and of course vocalist Alan Reed. The artwork is excellent, though that one band photo is a bit eerie. The songs:

THE BRINGER OF DREAMS: An orchestral intro opens the circus of dreams, finally breaking through with powerful guitar, and drags you through ten minutes of prime Pallas. All the trademarks of their last album 'Cross & The Crucible' come to the table here, a solid opener and a good taster for what both this album and Pallas are about.

WARRIORS: Rush-like guitar opens this rocker about the dreams of the fanatical 'holy warrior', the type who would, say, ram a hijacked plane into a building of innocents who never saw it coming. A more guitar-driven track.

GHOSTDANCERS: a violin opens this sombre track about the New World told from the point of view of first the immigrant and later, the Native American. With guest violin, some of this track has a distinct sound of American proggers Kansas. Powerful lyrics, though the chanting and gunshot sound at the end may have been an overdone cliche.

TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN: This one is a progressive rock lover's dream, going through some tasty instrumental flavors and changes. Special mention must go to the nice Emerson-style synthesizer bits from Ronnie Brown. I gather this song is about our natural flair for going too far in pursuit of our dreams and the inevitable consequences. 'Don't fly too close, the wax may melt'.

MESSIAH: A shorter and almost funky rock track similar to an earlier Pallas track called 'Dinosaur'. Murray's bass also reminds me of 'The Messenger' from Yes' 1999 album 'The Ladder'. I hear some Squire in there. I think this track is a dig at George Bush. There's guest female vocals at the end too.

NORTHERN STAR: a beautiful instrumental with nice guitar and atmospheric keyboards. Being an often vocal/lyric-oriented genre, there are precious few neo-prog instrumental moments, with the exception of some Pendragon and early IQ material. This is a reflective calm from the stormy songs around it, and a pleasant track indeed. No words are needed to convey that this track is meant to be about your(you the listener)own dreams and desires. When you wish upon a star...

MR. WOLFE: another shorter track(six minutes is short for Pallas)with a somewhat Gothic feel with use of some organ. This is probably about the selfishness of those whose dreams are material gains at the expense of others. This theme moves into the next track as well.

INVINCIBLE: the last two tracks on this album are astounding. This one is the longest and most involved track, separated into 'movements', and going through many dramatic sections. The sound of a machine-like percussion pattern repeats its way around Alan Reed declaring 'It's my life, and YOU CAN'T HAVE IT!'. This is not too unlike something from IQ's 'Seventh House' in places. Basically this one's about how we're all expected to be numbers, living robotic lives endlessly working and pumping money into our credit cards while chasing unattainable goals and going along with whatever corporations feed us. Yet invincible if we dare to break out.

THE LAST ANGEL: an emotional anthem closes this disc, one with all the trademarks of some of the best melodic Neo elements. It starts as a mellow almost Peter Gabriel-like slow theme(think Biko, but that's stretching it), and goes through a Hackett-like guitar bit, an Arena-like dark section, and a powerful anthemic close with additional female vocals. A powerful closer, play this one loud. I believe this may be about an Angel who comes to help mankind, only to find nothing worth saving. However this album is worth saving for your collection, and stands with Arena's 'Pepper's Ghost', Pendragon's 'Believe' and Kino's 'Picture' as best Neo albums of 2005.

Also- the 'special edition' comes with a second disc, also stuffed to the guts with 70+ minutes of music, which features remixes of some album tracks, instrumental tracks(very tasty) and another version of 'Fragments Of The Sun' from the 'Beat The Drum' album. Of course get the two disc version and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars THE BLINDING DARKNESS WAS GREAT.......2005-12-03

          4 out of 5 stars A whopping 4.25.. for reals.......2005-11-24

Pallas is turning out to be very good and very "Progressive".
My idea of a progressive band is one that moves forward. Pallas is smoking the rest of the bands in prog due to this stellat release. I like the melodies and the way it is sung, with heart.

The keyboards are great and the mad man on guitar is so underrated it is silly. But aren't all prog players? The majority of the cd is awesome with a few gliches too insignificant to mention. falabendr don't think I'm kidding I really like it. Bean is good but especially, Depardieu

I go to a school where people think that Manson is terrible and evil with no talent. Man, they are SO WRONG.

          5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......1999-03-09

I love Apple of Sodom but didn't wanna buy the Lost Highway soundtrack just for it, like I did with Long Hard Road, Out of Hell(on Spawn). So I shopped around a few stores and found Apple on The Dope Show single. The Dope Show is a great songs, Sweet Dreams is live and loud, and Apple of Sodom is live also, making The Dope Show an awesome single. Buy it if you're a first-time Manson fan to preview their new era, Smells Like Children era, and Antichrist Superstar era
