5 out of 5 stars Power, Emotion, Mysticism, Virtuosity...it's all here, live........2006-07-17

In the mid-70's, my younger brother and I would do our high school homework in separate rooms, listen to the radio, and yell out which station to tune into for the next great song. More often than not, it was Rochester's WSAY, a great and truly progressive rock station (on the AM dial!).

I only mention this because it was only there that you could hear in frequent rotation such classic songs as "Ice" by Crack the Sky, "Free Hand" by Gentle Giant, "Nowhere's Too Far For My Baby" by Frampton, or "Day of the Eagle" by Robin Trower. A belated "thank you" to WSAY for opening up my musical mind.

At that time, I was a folk-rock junkie beginning the transformation into a prog rock champion. I was not a fan of the blues, and I did not yet fully appreciate heavy electric guitar; but I knew there was talent and emotion in Trower's music, and I became an avid closet Trower collector and listener long after WSAY changed formats. This recording of a King Biscuit Flower Hour performance from 1977 shows Trower at his peak, and is a treasure for anyone who ever fell in love with this Englishman's unique style of electric blues/acid rock guitar.

James Dewar's vocals are great (always reminded me of David Clayton Thomas [from Blood, Sweat & Tears] doing an imitation of Jimi Hendrix!), and he gets a chance to focus on vocals-only here as bass duties are skillfully carried by Rustee Allen, while Bill Lordan plays all drums. Trower himself is flawless in his execution of these killer tunes, and you get to hear him talking and joking with an adoring crowd. He shines brightest on long slow jams, and we're treated to a couple of classics on the extended versions of "Daydreams" (12 minutes) and "Bridge of Sighs" (9 minutes).

This recording does a nice job of capturing the fun and excitement of the show. My only complaint is that the bass was mixed kind of low - to get a nice dynamic feel for this music, I suggest turning the bass way up on your stereo equalizer (especially so you get the most out of Allen's bass solo on "Messin' the Blues").

A fantastic 70-minute overview of Trower's music in the late 70's, I highly recommend this one-of-a-kind cd.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.9/10; Performance = 8.5/10; Production = 8/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.8 ("4-1/2 stars")

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2004-12-19

In Concert is a great performance by Trower's best line-up playing his best material.

His studio albums have always seemed too slick to me. This live recording adds some needed rough edges to the Trower sound. Although the late James Dewar's vocals could be a little cheesy at times, he's great on this one.

Okay, so Robin was influenced by Hendrix, tell me what guitar player from the last 30 years hasn't been? But it is not true that Trower was just a Jimi wannabe. He was a *peer* of Hendrix, one of many guitar players who explored a psychedelic twist on the blues in the 60s and 70's.

"Further on up the Road", is a Trower-ized version of the blues classic and it is THE shining jewel on this CD. This song alone is worth the price of the CD.

2004 is the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster and the 30th anniversary of Bridge of Sighs. I can't think of a better anniversary present than this album. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Holy S*&^!!!! That's all I have to say.......2004-10-25

This is the ultimate live album. Dewar's soulful thick voice and Robins GUITAR work is at its PEAK!!!!!!!

This is energized and raw. Just get it if your a Trower fan or just a guitar rock fan. This live album can NOT dissapoint.

5 out of 5 stars Outta Sight!.......2001-07-02

If you're reading this review, then chances are you are already familiar with the music of Robin Trower. If you aren't, and you happen to enjoy Electric-Psychedelic-Acidrock-Blues, then rush out to any record store and score yourself a copy of Bridge of Sighs. If you like it, then you'll absolutely dig this previously unreleased 1977 gem from the vaults of The King Biscuit Flower Hour (it was never aired on the radio).

5 out of 5 stars An undiluted blues/rock concert experience.......1998-07-30

James Dewar lets Rustee Allen play the bass and concentrates on the vocals, a perfect tradeoff. The band is having a great day and plays many of the greatest Robin Trower songs. All in all it's like being there with the band, esp since the whole concert is there without breaks and with many of the songs in extended versions. Nice surprises includes a very bluesy version of "Too Rolling Stoned" where the band deviates quite a bit from the studio version as well as a version of "Daydream" in a really slow tempo that allows one to hear all the nitty-gritty licks that Robin Trower plays in this tune. The album also includes possibly the best version of "Bridge Of Sighs" that Robin Trower has ever recorded. All in all this album is a true undiluted blues/rock concert experience with real musicians playing real instruments in front of a captivated audience. Even if you have all the studio versions of the songs you'll need this album to experience! the live Robin Trower sound.

4 out of 5 stars he didn't miss a step.......2005-06-28

There are several compelling reasons why one might be interested in purchasing this recording of David Crosby's April, 1989 concert at the historic, 3500-seat Tower Theatre in Philadelphia, not the least of which is the fact that Crosby was marking a return to the stage after nearly a decade of descent into drug abuse and, eventually, a prison sentence. An appearance on the King Biscuit Flower Hour, a nationally syndicated supplier of concerts prepared for radio broadcast, usually indicates that the performers are releasing a new album, and for Crosby that album was 1990's 'Oh, Yes I Can'.

In addition to this being Crosby's exclamation of triumph over drug addiction, 'KBFH Presents David Crosby' offers the listener a rare opportunity to hear Crosby sans his usual sidekicks, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills. So here we get a chance to hear David put his own spin on tracks such as 'Guinnevere', 'Deja Vu', and 'Wooden Ships', and while I certainly wouldn't go so far as to say that Still's guitar and Nash's harmonies aren't missed, there is an urgency and freshness to these performances that CS&N may never be able to muster again.

David offers up a compelling song list, delving back into his circa-1970 CSN&Y compositions such as 'Guinnevere', 'Deja Vu', 'Wooden Ships', 'Almost Cut My Hair' and 'Long Time Gone', along with tracks from two CS&N reunion's, 1977's 'In My Dreams' and 1982's 'Delta'. It's interesting just to hear Crosby cover these tracks with substitute harmonies and backing musicians, and I'm pleased to report that none of these versions disappoint. Keyboardist Michael Finnigan draws on his longstanding studio and concert work with CS&N, and adds some impressive harmonies, while guitarist Dan Dugmore (longtime session steel guitarist for Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor) takes over lead guitar duties for Stills. Crosby's band also features bassist Davey Farragher, who has backed John Hiatt, and drummer Jody Cortese, whose career may well have peaked out right here. All-in-all, a better-than-average collection of musicians, able to exhude their own personality, even over these nostalgic tracks.

Half of the setlist offered by Crosby is drawn from two new releases, 1988's CSN&Y reuinion disc 'American Dream' ('Night Time For the Generals' and 'Compass') and 1990's 'Oh, Yes I Can' (the title track, plus 'Drive My Car' [not the Lennon/McCartney classic], 'Monkey and the Underdog', 'Tracks In the Dust' and 'Lady of the Harbor'). While none of these numbers is on a par with Crosby's legendary compositions from the 1960's, they do show Crosby's musical genius was far from snuffed out by drug usage. And while 'Tracks In the Dust' and 'Compass' add to Crosby's lengthy acoustic legacy, 'Drive My Car', 'Monkee and the Underdog', and 'Night Time For the Generals' show Crosby still knows how to rock, as well as carry a politicized edge. Since most of the songs speak to his experience overcoming massive life problems, they are (for Crosby) uncharacteristically upbeat and optimistic. 'Lady of the Harbor', done in homage to the Statue of Liberty on her 100th birthday, is even patriotic. So these songs provide a vital contrast to Crosby's more dark and pessimistic fare from earlier in his career.

This King Biscuit recording is culled entirely from one night's performance, so the possibilities for an off-kilter performance or poor recording quality are high, but neither materializes as an unfortunate circumstance. In fact, Crosby and the band sound tight and energized, and the recording is just about flawless. There is the occasional missed note, and a couple untimely audience "contributions", but David and the band hardly seem fazed at all, and so for the most part neither will you. The 1996 'Collector's Edition' is digitally remastered and the package includes detailed liner notes with several photographs, presumably from this show. If you go for the analog-to-digital 1990 version, be sure to get it at a discounted price. It may be tough however to beat the $3.49 I paid (shipping included) for my 1996 copy on ebay.

5 out of 5 stars Crosby at his best - Buy this before it goes out of print!!.......2003-01-12

So it happens that this under-marketed CD chronicles one of the highest points in Crosby's career celebrating his triumph over chemical abuse.

Crosby's rendition of "Oh, yes I can" here is probably the most maginificent, moving and honest self-commentary in the history of rock music, coming from the man who had gone there and back who used to be, for want of a better word, so arrogant. The emotional content of this performance surpasses the subdued studio version (sadly out of print) by a gigantic margin.

The "monkey and the underdog" that follows, with the introduction "I am the underdog", hits the same emotional height as Crosby confesses "I'm fighting just to get from four o'clock to five".

I treasure this CD. You just listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars The best he can be !.......1999-10-27

Recorded in 1989, David Crosby was fresh out of prison, clean and sober, and by the sound of this live recording, was out to prove he could still be an important musician. He manages to prove just that !

The band at this time consisted of Dan Dugmore (lead guitar), Mike Finnegan (keyboards), Davy Farragher (bass), and Jody Cortez (drums), and David (rhythm guitar). That's it. No cameos from Graham or anyone else, and that suits me just fine. It's just David out in front of a simple band, with no one else vying for center stage. He actually plays guitar on every single track (except for the piano ballads "Delta",and "Oh, Yes I Can"),and although he's never been more than a marginal guitarist, he's does a respectable job grinding out chords behind Dugmore's excellent leads. This is most apparent on "Wooden Ships", where we hear David's twelve string ringing true, and it seems he was actually making an effort to get creative with it. This is most telling at closing portion of the song where he provides a goosebump provoking lick to close out the song. This is the best live performance of "Wooden Ships" I've ever heard, either by CSN, CSN&Y, Jefferson Airplane, or on Stills' solo efforts. We get similar results on "Deja Vu", "Long Time Gone", and "Almost Cut My Hair". The album is balanced out by material from the "Oh, Yes I Can" album, and basically mirrors the solo versions, which is ok. The material was new at this point in time. Per Croz's usual routine, the show starts out with an acoustic set (Tracks in the Dust, Guinnevere, Compass, and In My Dreams). He does a nice enough job with these (with the exception of the lyrically tortured "Compass", a song with such obscure lyrics that even the composer forgets the words on the first line !). But the real gems are the electric songs. Along with the aforementioned classics, we get the new composition "Nighttime For the Generals", which rocks (with David adding guitar...something he didn't do on American Dream).

All-in-all, this is one fine live album. I listen to it a lot. David should be proud of this one !

5 out of 5 stars Steve Miller Band at their best.......2006-05-17

A few years back I owned and then sold The Best Of The Steve Miller Band not being impressed beyond a few songs on the album. I was browsing the used CD section and came across this CD deciding to give it a chance. I had absolutely no idea how cool Steve Miller really was until I head this album. There is an early version of "Fly Like and Eagle" on Disc 1 that is 11 mins long and has to be one of my all time favorite songs even though I play disc 2 more with different version of "The Joker" and a awesome version of "Mountain Honey".

4 out of 5 stars Smooth and Grooving Stevie.......2006-02-19

When considering the career of Steve Miller, a certain kind of dissonance--cognitive, not musical--comes to mind.

Here was a guy who belted out songs about revolution, children of the future, and military-industrial complexes, but his hardcore appeal seemed to lie with the frat-boy crowd. He wasn't cool enough for the hippies, who slunk off with their Grateful Dead, Quicksilver, and Hot Tuna... you know, the "authentic" San Francisco bands.

He called himself "Stevie 'Guitar' Miller" , but the only sh-t hot guitar solo on his classic albums was credited to another Miller named Jimmy ("Good Morning", on "Number 5").

The two King Biscuit concerts that make up this double-cd cover selections from nearly ever album that Miller made up until 1976.... with the exception of "Your Saving Grace".

The 1973 concert is looser, with Miller himself handling the lead guitar, and turning in fine performances of "Mary Lou" and other crowd pleasers. it is interesting to hear "Fly Like an Eagle", and "My Dark Hour" back to back, since they share the same introductory guitar riff.

The 1976 concert is a bit more slick, with synthesizer textures firmly in place. Miller limits himself mostly to 12 string guitar in this concert, and even pulls a song ("Nothing Lasts") from the long unavailable "Recall the Beginning: A Journey from Eden" album.

Miller always employed good sidemen--drummers Jack King and Gary Mallaber are particularly fine on these recordings-- and as for Stevie himself, he is in great vocal form throughout. Miller always could deliver the goods. These performances are a good reminder of his considerable talents as a musician, showman, and songcrafter.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Miller Band - 'King Biscuit Flower Hour' (King Biscuit).......2005-11-03

An absolute must-have for any true fan of the Steve Miller Band or even '70's arena/album rock in general for that matter.Cannot believe I've never even heard about this 2-CD King Biscuit release before. Two top of the line shows here, disc one comes from D.C. in 1973 and disc two New York City 1976.Total of 25 power-packed songs here for your late night listening pleasure. The memorable tracks seem to stick out more, like "Space Cowboy","Gangster Of Love","Living In The USA",his signature song "Fly Like An Eagle"(I've seen this cut bring tears to people's eyes),"Blue With A Feeling","The Joker","Nothing Lasts","Wild Mountain Honey" and "Seasons".Sure beats listening to that thirty-year old aging BASF cassette that a lot of us used to record these shows on off the radio every Sunday night.Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Anybody sick of hearing the same Steve Miller stuff on the radio should buy this release.......2005-09-14

This is timeless and excellent, raw and vintage Steve Miller in his prime. I got bored listening to the same old radio played "hits" and truly forgot what a great musician/guitarist this guy is. That is, until I picked up this release. I recommend this if you are into live classic rock.

4 out of 5 stars the poor man's Eric Clapton.......2005-08-10

`The King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents The Steve Miller Band' is a two-disc set showcasing concerts recorded in Washington D.C. in 1973 and New York City in 1976. Fortuitously for the Flower Hour, and us, these concerts capture Miller at a crossroads in his recording career. Disc one features Miller promoting his breakthrough 1973 release, `The Joker', although the eclectic setlist draws extensively from three of his previous albums. Disc two presents Miller in the company of an entirely revamped band (and sound) following a two-year hiatus from the road, promoting what many consider to be his finest studio production, `Fly Like An Eagle'. The two recordings document Miller's transition from a blues-rock guitar maestro, only a fret short of Eric Clapton, to a more mature, consummate, and compelling artist.

The first disc is near-and-dear to my own heart as I caught Miller on his 1973 tour (along with the talented James Cotton Blues Band) at the ornate and intimate confines of the Masonic Temple in Detroit, Michigan. It was one of over 400 concerts Miller performed in a two-year time span. I wasn't well versed in Miller's catalog at the time, but my recollections of the concert are bore out by the recording tendered here. Miller starts out with a flurry of catchy rock tunes, including 1969's `Space Cowboy', 1968's `Living In the USA', and 1970's politically-minded `Jackson-Kent Blues', which carries itself aurally as a precursor for his 1976 hit, `Rock'N Me'. While most of the tracks are penned by Miller (including `Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma', `Fly Like An Eagle', and `My Dark Hour'), there is a run of covers in `Mary Lou', `Your Cash Ain't Nothin' But Trash' and even `Gangster Of Love', which Miller claimed as a personal moniker. It's a fast-moving, intense rock show that unexplainably loses its fury and bows out with two fairly restrained blues numbers, `Evil' and a cover of Duke Ellington's `Blues With a Feelin', and the closer, a two-minute adios curiously featuring the band introductions, `So Long Blues' (which, ironically, Miller introduces as `Welcome'). Quite oxymoronic. Only `Lovin' Cup', from `The Joker', returns us to the riveting rock concert we started out with. The most interesting moments turn on the raw, guitar-based, formative version of `Fly Like An Eagle' Miller possessed in 1973. While the more evolved, keyboard-based version offered on disc two is certainly more familiar, its familiarity renders it the more superfluous of the two tracks. Both are thoroughly enjoyable, and are altogether compelling as a pair.

Disc two reveals a more accomplished and polished Steve Miller Band, this despite presenting only two of his seven Top-40 recordings, `Fly Like An Eagle' (#2 in January of 1977) and `The Joker' (#1 in November of 1973). There is an abundance of readily recognizable tunes, however, as Miller had become a staple for album-oriented FM radio in the 1970's. Among those tunes would be three tracks from `Fly Like An Eagle', `Wild Mountain Honey', `Mercury Blues', and `The Window'. He reaches all the way back to his first album for 1968's `Baby's Callin' Me Home', his second album for 1968's `Song For Our Ancestors', his third disc for 1969's `Seasons', his fifth album for 1970's `Going To the Country' and `Going To Mexico', and his seventh album for 1972's `Nothin' Lasts'. If you don't recognize these excellent compositions from their titles, you'll probably be surprised at how well acquainted you are with many of them. A respectable cover of Robert Johnson's oft-recorded `Come On In My Kitchen' completes the collection. Despite the fact that Miller rarely wrote a song without a fantastic guitar hook, those chops are much less pronounced on disc two as Miller had diversified his sound in the mid-1970's. By 1976, Miller's concerts ran the gamut from anthemic psychedelia (`Fly Like An Eagle'), to whispy ballads (`Wild Mountain Honey'), to crunchy blues-rock (`Mercury Blues'), and even to a reggae influenced (it was 1976 after all...) 'The Joker'.

I've been impressed with every `King Biscuit' disc I've had the pleasure to own, and this two-disc set is no exception. The recordings are brisk, with the caveat that a few of the softer passages reveal distracting tape hiss. Despite this, all of the musicians are well represented, Miller's vocals are strong, and there is a minimum of intrusive crowd noise. A well-constructed booklet is included with extensive notes from Miller himself, personal kudos' from Paul McCartney and Les Paul, and copious photographs of Miller and his band mates. The only criticism of the Biscuits' production is their failure to publish the running times for individual songs, despite listing them in three separate places. Nevertheless, `The King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents The Steve Miller Band' is a great way for casual fans like myself to collect a wealth of Miller's best work, and stands as an essential commodity for Miller's more devoted fans.

4 out of 5 stars only fool people who said this is a bad one!.......2004-08-13

if one can be clever, he is able to get this cd with 4,5 - 5 stars. if one can be fool, he cannot make any differences between Deep Purple & Britney Spears, and he said the songs are boring!
This cd is a godsend for all Deep Purple fans especially who remember Tommy Bolin (RIP) at that time. DP played in american soil during the US tour 1976 and the show was taped by King biscuit flower hour Radio with excellent quality.
The songs are heavy like Burn, Stormbringer, Lady Luck, Smoke, Highway star, The Grind. Tommy Bolin showed the audiences, how he could play very pretty that night in Long Beach Arena CAlif 1976. How strong he was! how clever he had replaced Ritchie Blackmore on his large shoes! if you're listening to this cd carefully, you can find the magical performances! if you re not listening carefully, you will find nothing!

4 out of 5 stars it's bolin not blackmore ok???.......2004-06-11

let's give credit to where it is deserved, ok?
enough of these childish bolin bashing.
tommy bolin is not ritchie blackmore, anymore than trevor rabin is steve howe. thus, to expect a lead guitarist of such individual calibre as bolin to simply imitate blackmore would both be an insult to tommy , and ritchie.
if you listen carefully to this album without expecting ritchie to come jumping off the stage with his gattling gun solo, you will find that there is a lot of tasty guitar from Mr. Bolin.
granted , the cat squeal of glenn hughes is a bit irritating, but he was trying to upstage david coverdale.
still, the band plays as a band. tight, with ian paice and jon lord at the helm, holding up the ship like 2 great captain driving this deep purple through one storm of a live gig.
drugs, booze or whatnot; those garbage that continuously suck
the talented life blood of these hard-working but unfortunately weak-willed artists;
and hopefully future artists will learn from this, never to mix junk with music. to sum it all, if you are still so pig-headed about sleeping with ritchie blackmore and his strat, then you are going to be hating this entirely different purple music with bolin. however, if you keep an open mind and judge an orange for an orange,(not an apple for an orange),then this is the juiciest orange you can get out of a bunch of purple people.
get it? 'nuff said.

2 out of 5 stars Same, Same, Same.......2003-08-11

Same songs on every other live album, but poor sound. Save your $$$ & get Nobody's Perfect.

2 out of 5 stars Whitesnake plays Deep Purple.......2003-01-08

This is Deep Purple Mock IV (I don't use the word mach; I use the word mock as in mockery). The first disc and a half comes from a concert in January 1976. The last 4 tracks are from February 1976. A couple of the songs get repeated, like Smoke on the Water. The first disc is 62 minutes and the second is 58 minutes. The sound quality is adequate.

The group consists of original members Jon Lord and Ian Paice with Glenn Hughes on bass/vocals, David Coverdale on vocals and Tommy Bolin on guitar. Lord, Paice and Coverdale would go to form Whitesnake, which was basically Coverdale's band.

The band does not sound like it had played together long. Bolin seems especially out of place. The band plays better on the newer songs, but really fumbles around with the classic songs. Coverdale doesn't even get the words right on the January version of Smoke on the Water. Later, in the February version, we sings the song correctly. Lord and Paice are solid throughout, but the other three don't mesh.

There is only one really good song, Getting Tighter. A couple of songs are OK in parts, like the middle of Love Child and the last half of This Time Around. There is a 22 minute version of Lazy, but it is nowhere as good as the jams the real Deep Purple used to do.

I do not appreciate Coverdale's vocals. He does a lot of screaming, but without the class of someone like Ian Gillan. He tries to imitate Gillan in some parts and fails. He tries to steal from Robert Plant, but comes off flat. And he does a bad imitation of Stevie Wonder. Most of the time, he comes off acting juvenile.

I am surprised at how bad Tommy Bolin is on this album. Bolin was always great with other bands or with his solo work. He has a 10 minute solo that is just snippets of guitar cliches with long gaps inbetween. His guitar work during most of the songs is uninspiring. He does get in a few good licks in Getting Tighter and This Time Around. His inconsistancy was probably due to his drug problems. He died later in the year from a drug overdose.

The best Deep Purple live album is the old 2 CD Live and Rare (not to be confused with the New Live and Rare). Next comes Made In Japan and In Concert. Live at Knebworth has some good parts. Nobody's Perfect is pretty bad, about on a par with this album.

A side note: I once saw Whitesnake as the warm up band for someone else. I didn't know anything about the band, and thought they were pretty band. But, then the keyboard player and drummer went into this fantastic jam. Then I find out they were Lord and Paice.

4 out of 5 stars the same album as the FOX BAT live in California 1976.......2001-10-01

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Foghat.......2005-09-10

Although 1977's FOGHAT LIVE remains the definitive live document of Foghat, this CD is also exceptional. It features shows from 1974 and 1976, plus an interview with the band. You must add this album to your Foghat library if you haven't already done so.

4 out of 5 stars Foghat - 'King Biscuit Flower Hour' (King Biscuit).......2005-06-17

A true hard rock classic!Recorded live sometime in 1976 plus with a couple of tracks from 1974.Great sound quality. You cannot go wrong here.So many memories were made with these songs(and kids, too)I'm sure.Tracks you'll most likely find yourself playing over until your CD player requires a good cleaning are the scorching opener "Fool For The City","My Babe",the ten-minute "Slow Ride","Eight Days On The Road" and "I Just Want To Make Love To You".Plus, the nine-minute interview is interesting to check out.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome stuff. Slow Ride alone makes it worthwhile........2003-01-30

Foghat's King Biscuit Flower Hour release should definitely be anyone's live Foghat CD of choice. It's an awesome show, and the band is on fire. The highlights of this CD are awesome, killer versions of Slow Ride and I Just Want To Make Love To You, both clocking in at over ten minutes. Rod Price's slide guitar on these songs is just amazing. Sound quality is very good and there are informative liner notes. This is definitely worth owning for fans of the group or hard rock/blues rock in general.

5 out of 5 stars SOOOO MUCH BETTER than the "Live" album!.......2001-03-26

First of all I have to say that FOGHAT was an excellent band (studio AND live) in the 70's, and I'm right sick of hearing about how they were just some "arena" act. This band knew the blues to it's CORE! FOGHAT took the blues to it's hard rock peak and should be recognized as one of the great rock bands of all time. I also believe that ROD PRICE is the most underrated & under appreciated SLIDE guitar player in the history of rock n roll.

Of course their live shows were awesome and full of energy. After 20+ years of living with the sterile, commercially restrained "LIVE" album from 1977, this KING BISCUIT live cd came as a GODSEND to the people who know what this band was REALLY like, in a live setting!

The CD features 6 tracks from the NIGHT SHIFT tour of 1976, plus 3 ESSENTIAL live versions of "HOME IN MY HAND", "EIGHT DAYS ON THE ROAD" and "I JUST WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU" from 1974. The latter featuring a rave-up intro by Lonesome Dave. It includes a line that you'd NEVER hear on the "commercially safe" LIVE album; goes a little something like.. "I Don't want your money, no I don't want your money... I SAID I DON'T WANT YOUR F*#!*&! MONEY!!( The "Live" album leaves out the F*#!*&!) The inclusion of the "F*#!*&!" just adds a little passion and "arse kickin" attitude into an already GREAT live CD.

There's also the bonus interview track; a portion of an interview with Lonesome Dave concerning Foghat's approach to their live shows. The track is 9 1/2 minutes long, but because of Dave's slow explanation, he only hits on about 3 or 4 points. It's still a somewhat interesting interview though and it's always great to hear insight from the artist.

Overall, this is an OUTSTANDING live release. If you're a FOGHAT fan, RUN don't WALK to buy this CD! Trust me, you've been waitng nearly 24 years to own a REAL live album from this excellent band.

I wish that there was a "part two" available that featured other great FOGHAT songs like the foot stomping "TERRAPLANE BLUES", "HIGHWAY (KILLING ME)" or "MAYBELLINE", which is the best send up of the Chuck Berry classic ever put to tape.

p.s Someone below stated that FOGHAT was "THE" live attraction of 1976. Although I definately think they were one of the very best, I believe that KISS would more accurately hold that title.

4 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE BOOGIEMEN.......2000-03-04

This live CD captures Foghat during their peak. Aggresive, raw, energetic, and full of stompin' boogie music, Foghat played the best of it out of all the other bands that tried. The King Biscuit concert is a better showcase of the band as a live act than Road Cases, which was released awhile back, but that's good nonetheless. Although their are only 6 tracks on here, 4 bonus cuts from a 1974 show are tacked on, and lastly there is a lengthy interview at the end, giving you some input on who Foghat really was.

The second part of this October 14, 1977 show. From 'Running Hard' and 'Mother Russia' to 'Ashes Are Burning' (which turns into a 28-minute improvisation), they generally do credit to themselves and their repertory. The concert is rounded out with 'Prologue' in a live performance from in Asbury Park, N.J., and a previously unissued studio cut, 'You (Pts. 1 & 2).'

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Renaissance live album (part 2).......2005-11-10

This CD continues the Royal Albert Hall concert recorded in 1977 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Renaissance is in fine form here. The CD starts off with two classics from the "Turn of the Cards" album alternating with two songs from "Novella". I'm less fond of "Novella" than other Renaissance fans are, but the performances here certainly are solid. "Running Hard" and "Mother Russia" are big fan favorites, and the group doesn't disappoint.

The stunning track here, though, is a performance of the band's usual encore, "Ashes are Burning". Several live versions have been released, but this one is by far the best. All five band members are given the chance to shine in featured sections. Worth the price for this song alone.

The compilers had extra room on the CD, so two tracks are added. A version of "Prologue" from a 1979 show is listed. However, on early pressings, an edited version of "A Song for All Seasons" (presumably from the same show) was included instead by mistake. Not that that's a problem -- both good songs. Just beware if you're picking up a used copy.

The last song is what was then a new studio track, "You". It was recorded much later, in the 80's, when the group had abandoned prog-rock in favor of a more commercial New Wave pop sound. Despite some interesting bass work from Jon Camp, this track stands out like a sore thumb, coming after some classic Renaissance performances. It's also now available on the outtakes compilation "Songs from Renaissance Days", where it at least sounds more in place.

However, this doesn't distract from the fantastic live concert. Neither do the minor problems with sound. Old fans will love the great performances, and new fans will get a great overview of Classic Renaissance songs. Get both volumes!

5 out of 5 stars It is not as bad as all that..........2004-03-06

I was first introduced to Renaissance through vols. I and II of this live performance and found it passionate and nothing less than inspiring, despite the technical flaws. It is, after all, a live performance; and it rocks.

For the last six years there has rarely been another CD in my machine besides either of these volumes. I am a classical buff and I am familiar with most art rock, symphonic rock, prog-rock, or whatever you wish to term the synthesis of a rock band and symphonic orchestra, and this is the best of the best. The group is mature and at their peak in both Vols. I and II of this set and display cohesion and individual musicianship which has been somewhat subdued in previous live recordings.

The Royal Philharmonic is outstanding in their supportive role and Annie Haslam gives a phenomenal performance. Most notable is her duo with a xylophone in 'Running Hard' and mimicking of the horn section in 'Touching Once'. Jon Camp's bass is more effectual than ever, especially a solo in 'Ashes are Burning'.

Forget about the reviews criticizing sound quality. Once you start listening, appreciating, and feeling this performance the minor technical gliches won't mean a thing.

1 out of 5 stars TRUE Renaissance fans: Do NOT waste your money on this CD!.......2003-11-03

First let it be known: I am a Renaissance fan from the days of SCHEHERAZADE...Annie Haslam & the boys are legends in the realm of great 70's progressive/art rock. When a friend of mine first loaned me this CD to listen to a few weeks ago, I couldn't WAIT to get home to listen to it. Imagine my disappointment, being an audiophile (and "performancephile," to coin a phrase) at hearing a Renaissance recording that should never have been released. (I can just picture the angry E mails coming to me already...)

This COULD have been such a great recording. As another reviewer mentioned, shortly into this concert, something happens with the sound system wiring (on Disc One), and for the remainder of the ENTIRE CONCERT, we are subjected to the annoying buzz of bad grounding. I was appalled enough by this, but to add insult to injury, there is miscrophone feedback at WAY too many intervals throughout the remainder of the show as well. (Listen closely to Ashes Are Burning...you WILL groan.) I sat through both of these CD's shaking my head in utter disbelief...could it have been that the roadies or the King Biscuit crew had indulged in a bit too much ganja at the pre-show sound check?

It is beyond me how Renaissance could have approved the releasing, let alone the recording, of these performances. I say again: I love this band dearly, and they DO have a great concert recording in their Live At Carnegie Hall release. THIS concert, along with its bad mike-ing (there are sections when you can't hear certain sections of the orchestra at all) & the way the grand piano sounds muffled, ends up being nothing less than a bad joke. If Annie and the band DID actually approve of this travesty being released to their loving (& unwitting) fans, then they have lost a great deal of my respect & admiration...I am giving them the benefit of the doubt, however, & choosing to believe that they were not aware of its being released. Let's all hope this is the case.

3 out of 5 stars It's less complete than"Live at Carnagie..",but is memorable.......2002-12-10

Well actually the right rate should be 3 stars and 1/2: anyway it's less complete than "Live at the Carnagie Hall", remaining anyway memorable!! You find a lot improvisations in the classic suite "Ashes are burning"; moreover you can appreciate an old "cut" of Prologue (to me it's not so much essential, but nevermind ...)and almost the whole best stuff from "Turn of the cards", as usual. Unfortunately "Touching once" and "You" don't add anything new to their classic "song-format", while I would have appreciated a new version od Scheherazade, here not present and it's a pity !!

Recommended to all the Renaissance's fans, but it's not an essential place to start ...

5 out of 5 stars Another gem in the Renaissance crown..........2001-09-01

Renaissance fans will not want to miss this one circa 1977, this is the band in their prime. Great sound quality as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Production!.......2002-07-25

Elvin Bishop was really coming into his own at this time. After his years with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and his extensive studio work this was his time to shine. And this performance is an extraordinary piece of work. The production is sterling live work. Micky Thomas was just being introduced and Bishop's backup band were consumate professionals. The crowd is with them and this concert rocks from the opening song to the last. Not a bad song in it. A really great find. Thank God for the Biscuit material preserving such performances!

Product Description

The King Biscuit Flower Hour, a mainstay of weekend late-night FM radio throughout the late-'70s and early-'80s, tended to catch groups on the way up. But this live set, recorded in San Antonio in late 1984, not only features the Romantics five years after their definitive single, 1979's garage-rock stomper "What I Like About You," it comes over a year after their comeback hit, 1983's slickly-processed "Talking In Your Sleep." Recorded just before drummer/singer Jimmy Marinos left the band--their last album, 1985's RHYTHM ROMANCE, was recorded without him--this set strips away the soulless over-production which mars the band's later efforts. Without the layers of electronics, "Talking In Your Sleep" and its brethren are catchy, politely rocking pop songs. The set ends with a medley of '60s raveups culminating in the one-two punch of "What I Like About You" and a smoking "Little Latin Lupe Lu."

Album Description

This concert, recorded on Oct. 30, 1983 in San Antonio, at the peak of the group's popularity, it captures them in a powerful, energetic performance, displaying their best garage punk attributes full force along with a surprisingly melodic sound that put them a few steps above bands like the Ramones. It's all here, including 'Talking In Your Sleep' and climaxing with 'What I Like About You.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best LIVE power-pop CD's EVER!.......2005-12-23

First, a few of the previous reviews are incorrect when they state that Drummer/Singer Jimmy Marinos is not on this CD. He was STILL with the group here (plays drums on every song and sings on many including "What I Like About You").

The Romantics are one of the best live groups I have ever seen and this CD certainly captured a great performance! The first release by the romantics is still the best, but this is a close second! Even if you're a music buyer who doesn't prefer live CD's I think you'll be in for a surprise with this one.

3 out of 5 stars Romantics-'King Biscuit Flower Hour'(King Biscuit)3.5 stars.......2005-06-05

'King Biscuit...' was recorded live at a gig in October,1983 in San Antonio,TX.Features seventeen tracks that run for an hour.I like the Romantics and all,but I really believe they need to get back long-departed drummer/vocalist Jimmy Marinos.Sound is great, with the guys creating some well penned alternative power pop,as only they can.Cuts I enjoyed reliving again the most were "When I Look Into Your Eyes","Rock You Up","Night Like This","Talking In Your Sleep","What I Like About You"(this tune is what originally drew me to this band way back when, always reminded me of early Kinks)and their Kingsmen cover "Little Latin Lupe Lu".Should appeal to most fans of Tommy Tutone,The Knack,The Producers,Plimsouls and Cheap Trick.

5 out of 5 stars A true Rock 'N Roll Classic.......2003-05-06

I'd give it 10 stars but they won't let me!

Places the Romantics right up there with the Kinks and Stones when it comes to live power! I cannot say enough about this CD, if you call your self a fan of real rock' n roll - it doesn't get any better than this. Buy this disc and go see them live TODAY they're still touring and giving it all they have 20 years later!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Romantics At Their Best!.......2001-11-29

Absolutely, one of the best live albums ever produced and a must have for people who love the Romantics. All the Original members are here, Jimmy Marinos, Wally Palmar, Mike Skill and Coz Canler, with the exception of Bassist Rich Cole, who left the band after the third album. Great Hooks, Gritty Vocals and Powerful performances make this CD stand out.
All the Hits are here (What I Like About You and Talkin' In Your Sleep)with the exception of 'One In A Million', but there are numbers from everyone of their first four albums.
Marinos sings about a third of the Songs here with Palmar singing the rest. The first ten cuts of this album are non stop party fun! If you thought that The Romantics were some cute cuddly pop rock band, think again. Their brand of Detroit Rock & Roll is amazingly sharp and smokin'.

3 out of 5 stars THE BAND NEEDS MORE FOCUS!!!.......1999-01-31

THE ROMANTICS HAVE A POP STYLE ALL THEIR OWN BUT THEY LACK IT ON THIS CONCERT CD. TUNES ARE GOOD BUT THEY ARE MISSING JIMMY MARINOS PUNCH

5 out of 5 stars What kinda guy?...The kind that delivers!.......2001-01-27

This live CD neatly encapsulates the first half of Steve Forbert's impressive career.Recorded in 1982 it finds a young, fun loving, and enthusiastic Forbert leading a road tested band through the best of his original songs to date ,as well as some well chosen covers. The emphasis here is on the fun side of Steve Forbert. The more sobering and reflective type of songs he would record in the late 80's and the 90's were left behind at the bar on this night. Highlights? Hey there all hot here, but, "Ya Ya","Midsummer..", a particularly lovely version of "Katrina", and the Forbert signature tune "It Isn't Going To Be That Way"' will please even the most discriminating Forbert fan and impress upon newcomers to the music of this great underrated talent just how much they've been missing. Hey, he's still out there working hard you know. Treat yourself to the music of Steve Forbert and give yourself a well deserved smile.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SHOW !.......2000-02-11

Steve Forbert in concert with only his guitar and harmonica is a great experience. Witness BE HERE NOW or BE HERE AGAIN. Better yet, see one of his shows. Forbert with a solid backing band is equally entertaining, as this recording proves.

Recorded in 1982, this album provides an earful of songs from Forbert's first four releases, as well as excellent covers of the Troggs' "Love Is All Around" and Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business" and "Little Queenie."

The liner notes quote Forbert as saying this show was performed the night he met his wife. I've always wondered if they met before or after the concert. His singing would suggest the former, as youthful exuberance and a huge dose of energy are evident throughout, although I have seen Steve play to a crowd of literally 25 people, and he still played his heart out.

Forbert and his band "The Flying Squirrels" rock their way through "Ya Ya (Next To Me)", "He's Gotta Live Up To His Shoes," the wonderfully twisted "Complications," the singer's top 20 hit "Romeo's Tune," and most of the other tracks. They slow down just a bit on "Love Is All Around" and "It Isn't Gonna Be That Way," a great song from the artist's classic debut album.

Perhaps the best thing about this recording is that songs such as "Say Goodbye To Little Jo" and "School Girl," which flat-lined on the studio albums, sound terrific here due to Forbert's enthusiasm and the punch delivered by the band.

Overall, this is a wonderful snapshot of very talented young singer/songwriter having a lot of fun, and treating the audience to a great show. I wish I'd been there.

4 out of 5 stars Johnny Van Zant - 'King Biscuit Flower Hour' (King Biscuit).......2005-03-18

Another worthy archive live performance from the King Biscuit vaults.I'm sure that all of you most likely know that Johnny is currently the lead vocalist for the revamped Lynyrd Skynyrd. This 'King Biscuit' gig was recorded at a show in Jacksonville,Florida in June,1985.Apparently in the '80's,Van Zant had a decent solo career where he'd put out something like four, maybe five good southern rock lp's.Notable cuts here include "Two Plus Two","No More Dirty Deals","I'm A Fighter" and "In Your Eyes".Worth checking out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Great Vintage Live Show From The Future Skynyrd Frontman.......2002-09-20

This is a great Johnny Van Zant live CD. "Two Plus Two" and "No More Dirty Deals" sing my feelings about being let down by so-called loyal peers; "You Gotta Believe" and "Rock Survivors" call for faith and perseverance; "Standing In The Darkness" is a searching ballad-turned-rocker of a person wondering who and what he is, was, and can be; and the rest just rocks. This is a great album; no one does shows like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny shows he is an entertainer in his own right........1999-06-11

Growing up the younger brother of the late-great and all-time best song writer Ronnie Van Zant; Johnny has been called to follow in his brothers footsteps. Knowing that music styles change this album contains some harder driven Southern Rock, while also containing AOR. You'll be pleasantly surprised on how well music followes in the Van Zant family. If you like good ole' rock'n'roll then you're sure to enjoy this.
