Deserved More Attention..........2006-02-24
I bought this CD the week that it came out, and prior to that, had purchased the single of "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah"! When I bought the CD, I quickly realized that two of the girls pictured on the CD were different than two that appeared in the video for "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" ....so, I looked back at the single cover, which had baby pictures of the girls, along with their names...the different names were Tia & Tamara... yes! I didn't realize it till later, but it was Tia & Tamara Mowry (of "Sister, Sister" fame) who were originally in this group with Monique and Arike. They also appeared in the video.
Years later, I met Tamara while working at a hotel in Los Angeles. I mentioned this to her, and she was stunned that I knew! She told me that she and Tia had only done the single, as they soon after got the series "Sister, Sister," and decided to go with that (not surprisingly)!
In any case, this peppy and eclectic album has a fine mixture of uptempo's and ballads. There's the moody ballad "Cloudy with a Chance of Tears" (a very minor chart hit). This ballad has lyrics of teenage-love and angst over it, set to a metaphor of the weather, but it is sung with the passion of someone much older! There's also the charming "Love Lives Right Next Door," that another reviewer mentioned. I always found this tune to be very touching also! And then there's the sprightly, funky "Library Card" (what a cute and clever metaphor for trying out a relationship! I wish this had been released as a single...I think it could've garnered some success). Additionally, "Always" is a very understated, yet very affecting, midtempo groove that has to be experienced. It combines influences of pop and UK-inspired house elements on a low key. And of course, "Yeah Yeah Yeah" is a classic love ballad, not really sounding like it's out of the 50's, but somehow giving that feel-good feeling of the doo-wop era with its rhythms and the girls' shining, love-powered vocals.
For any fans of solid, early-90's R&B, I highly recommend "Just the Beginning"!
The Voices- A review by N.Burns, Mphs.,TN.......2005-09-04
I owned a copy of this album about a decade ago; and now, at age 22, I find myself rehearsing the same songs through my head. I have always loved this album, and I always will... That's why I've ordered it through Amazon's "Popular Music" @ a GREAT price!!
Memories...........2005-07-20
This group will always be my favorite. This is their only album unfortunately. My favorite song is Love lives right next door, my sister and I would sing at the top of our lungs to it. They rock and I hope they do well in their lifetimes. I hear Lapetra is in Iraq... Keep your head up, girl. Latoya is supposedly married to at member of R&B group Levert. I have no info on Monique Wilson, but if anyone does they should e-mail it to me a [...]. Arike was in R&B group Before Dark which had mediocre success. Good luck ladies. I wish you could have been up there with Destiny's Child=( I will "always" be your number one fan!

Solid,, Swinging, Advanced Hard Bop - 4&1/2 Stars .......2005-11-22
Don't make the mistake of dismissing this as one more "young lions" jazz recording, of which we had one too many by the mid-90's. For one thing alto saxophonist Julius Tolentino is 30 years old with a solid background in study and performance with masters such as Jackie McLean and Illinois Jacquet. Furthermore, Julius Tolentino is a already of player of considerable depth and improvisational maturity, though one senses he has much musical potential still to develop and unfold.
In any case, "Just the Beginning" is a very solid CD of attractive and intelligently arranged, advanced hard bop recorded in March 2005. There is plenty of variety on this beautifully recorded 60 minute CD which includes five originals by the group members, as well as four jazz standards. The groups include an alto/piano duo (on the last track), a sextet on 5 tracks, a quartet on 2 tracks, and a quintet on 1 track.
The recording begins with Tolentino's original "Just the Beginning" and opens with an attention grabbing duet between the leader and drummer Willie Jones 111, which clearly proclaims that this is Tolentino's recording and that he is in charge here. This strong track goes through several tempo changes and sets the stage for what is to come. The best track may be Jackie McLean's "Quadrangle" played by a pianoless quartet. At times this track reminds one of the late 50's Ornette Coleman quartet. It includes especially strong solos by Tolentino and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, and suggests a direction the altoist may profitably pursue in the future. On the tracks with trombonist Steve Davis there is a more of a traditional hard bop Jazz Messengers or One For All - type sound. Other notable tracks include Tolentino's ballad reading of "I Want To Talk About You"; Benny Golson's "Domingo"; Pelt's high octane "Pharaoh's Curse"; and Tolentino's swinging tribute to his wife Michelle, "Shell's Joy."
Tolentino's alto sound is bright and piercing, situated somewhere along the continuum between Jackie McLean and Dave Sanborn (though he sounds like neither of them). His sound and approach can be very warm and gentle too, as on the closing "Letter to Illinois."
Overall, there is plenty of fire and drama in this highly recommended set which more than maintains SharpNine's high production standards. "Just the Beginning" is is a very impressive debut recording for Julius Tolentino.

Can't Take My Pride.......2004-03-03
Kill Your Idols are one of the most furious bands on the NYHC market. This album is as fast and angry as anythig else in New York, if not more. With anger-filled vocals and speeding guitars, this album will give you a quick and swift kick in the nuts right when you turn it on.
Kill yourself if you don't buy this album.......2000-01-25
KYI is one of the most talented and unforgetable hardcore/punk bands on the scene at present. This album may only be eight songs long, but definitely worth the money that you have shelled out to buy it with. 8 songs of pure hardcore energy. my favorite album so far
Hardcore new york style.......2000-01-03
one of the best new hardcore albums I've ever heard
Best NY Hardcore in a decade.......1999-11-09
Finally, a hardcore band that doesn't sound like some bad metal. True hardcore punk like Negative Approach, The Necros, and Poison Idea. Great songs and they put on a great show.
NYHC at it's best.......1999-07-30
KYI is one of the most underrated bands in the punk/hardcorescene. These guys are awesome, check em out live if you can.

this compilation is 2 hours of beatdown on your ears. with the exception of Lacrimosa, this set ROCKS!
Quite a good compilation for the money........2003-12-26
OK, not every track on this compilation is mind blowing, but for the money there are a few on this, and it's quite a good selection from assorted thrash/death metal bands. Most of the riffs are dam heavy, and the music is fast. For somebody who just wants to have a listen to a selection of metal bands they had never heard before this is not a bad buy.

Just a note...........2007-04-02
All of the other reviews are quite accurate. This is an incredible album! But if you buy if from the artists website it's cheaper new than it is here used, and worth visiting the site any how just to read his stories.
Incredible.......2005-07-11
When a group comes out with some new sound that doesn't match anything you've ever heard, the rub is that it seems to be the only thing they can do. Jason Webley, in this respect, breaks two molds: he's not only different from everyone else; he's even different from himself! Only Just Beginning displays his talent well.
Some songs, like Music That Puts Everything Together and May Day, are lively and bring a smile to your face. May Day in particular is wonderful; I played it for a friend and she couldn't help but start dancing! He's dead on with "You hear that beat? Come on, move your feet...old man Winter's dead and gone! There'll be wiggling of the toes, there'll be taking off of clothes, there'll be silly naked dancing on the lawn!"
Other songs, like the first track and With, are gentle and calming.
I had never heard of Jason Webley (like most people) when I went to a Dresden Dolls concert a while back, and I have to say that his stage presence is stunning. He walked onstage looking very ordinary in a plain brown hat, and for a moment I thought he was just helping set up, but then he leaned down and lifted his accordion off the stage. He stood and slowly began to play it, beautiful and haunting...I could see his face from the side as it crumpled in seeming ecstasy with each controlled note. He wasn't acting; almost nobody could see him. He truly loves what he does.
Then, he lifted one foot and stomped the stage. He stomped with the other. He did this until he had a great thunderous accordioned rhythm, and then turned with a jump and began to sing in an oft-roaring voice. The majority of his performance was that way; surprising, entertaining, magnificent. And there is a track like that on Only Just Beginning (my favorite, I admit): Icarus. The way he uses his voice on it is especially excellent; by mere pacing he adds incredible emotion to the lines, "I'll say a word for sickness, she is my favorite mistress yes she knows my body like no other can...my flesh and spirit keep colliding when her fingers are inside me--oh my god Oh my God lady I'm your man."
That's his signature style, and it was all I knew before I bought this album. It came as a minor shock to me when I talked to him after the show and he showed 0 signs, from voice to demeanor, of being the same thunderous man. He was very kind and nondescript. I asked him which of his four CDs he would recommend me to buy, and he said that this album is the one of which he is most proud. I haven't heard all of his music, but I can't blame him after learning Only Just Beginning through and through. The combination of his smooth, arresting voice and less-used intruments such as the tuba and cello with his accordion, guitar, and piano (and others) merge with these fantastic songs and fitting lyrics to make an unforgettable CD.

Tomato Soldiers Unite........2006-08-01
I saw Jason Webley in Winona, Minnesota, at a small coffee house called the Blue Heron. My friend called me from there and she told me that it would be worth my time to skip across the railroad tracks and come see him.
I was amazed.
On stage with an accordion, a guitar, and a bottle full of coins from around the world that he shook like a maraca, Webley's live performance held so much atmosphere that I found myself shivering from time to time. He even made a phone call to a fan and talked to her in the middle of the performance, before asking us to look at our index fingers and spin around twelve times to get dizzy enough to appreciate his lively 'Drinking Song' ( from the album Counterpoint. ) Meeting him after the performance was probably one of the top five moments of my stay in Winona.
Every CD of Webley's is worth all the money you can pay for it. He combines folk, gypsy, and rock into a genre all his own, capped off by his deep, gravelly voice and enthusiastic accordion playing. 'Icarus' is definitely my favorite track on this CD, what with its pirate-esque feel and sing-along-ability. If you're to buy one Jason Webley CD in your life, I recommend either this or Against the Night. Either way, you won't be disappointed.
