Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The true creators and legends of Grind.......2007-01-12

As much as I love Napalm Death and the like, it's really these guys who are the true innovators and kings of grind. They took their love for the best of punk (Discharge, DRI) and the best of extreme metal (Slayer, Celtic Frost, and Slaughter) to create a musical genre that would knock the metal underground on it's f*cking *ss. Afterall it's these guys who were the first to do it and the one's who invented the BLAST BEAT! But what will really catch a metal aficionado's fancy are the f*cking riffs. See folks the problem sometimes in grindcore (like on Scum) is that sometimes the band has the desire to be as extreme as possible that the forget the value of the riff but the boys of Repulsion never ever forgot that and that's what I praise them the most for. They even throw in some solos which were definitely the Slayer-esque bunny-in-a-blender style and it sounds great. What makes the riffs so good are the inherent catchiness of them despite their uncompromising rawness. Some great examples of this would be Radiation Sickness, Maggots In Your Coffin, and Black Breath. I dare you to listen to "Maggots" and not do a frenzied headbang while shouting along with the catchy chorus. What's amazing about Black Breath is that it's one of the slowest grind songs ever but one of the best!

Of course what's a Horrified review without mentioning it's massive influence. This has to be one of the most ripped-off extreme metal albums I've ever heard. I mean even the first time I listened to this I was like "dude there's a Carcass riff! Wait there's ND riff! There's another!" and so on and so on. But one of the biggest culprits are Entombed of all people. It was because of Repulsion they were able to create the almighty Left Hand Path. Just to push this point further here's some specific examples- listen to the riff in Festering Boils then listen to Carcass's Reek of Putrefaction (the song), the beginning of "Bodily Dismemberment" is EXACTLY the same as the beginning of the title track on Left Hand Path, I don't blame them though since Repulsion had a real knack for writing some of the sickest intro riffs ever. I could go on but you get my drift.

What also stands out here are the lyrics, yes for today's standards they're not too intimidating but back then they were pretty insane, perfectly blending a touch of cartoony/chessiness and realism in them. The band themselves even stated that they were purely for humor only and they certainly add a fun element to the album. Oh I can't forget the vocals, they're very raw and raspy, quite unique for grindcore.

In a nutshell the band was trying to be over the top in every aspect and they're perhaps the one band to encompass everything that's "over the top" and still make a brilliant album. And to imagine these were just four crazy kids (from Michigan of all places!) who were just willing to be a tad more adventurous than everyone else and look what happened. This is of course mandatory purchase for extreme metal fans as this is one of the best grind albums ever, it deserves all the praise it gets. It's also perfect for people justing getting into grindcore. However, if I had just one complaint about this it would be the production which does sound sweet even if the whole thing is of "demo" quality, but judging from ND's sick cover of "Maggots" I know this would sound even BETTER if it had better production and then I'd probably think this was the best record ever made. I'm still giving this a high 96% though.

Everyone seems to have a different set of highlights and here's mine - Radiation Sickness, Splattered Cadavers, Six Feet Under, Maggots In Your Coffin, and my fave Black Breath.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage, classic extreme metal - the way it should be played.......2006-06-03

I bought this album purely because of its reputation and place in metal history (it was a mere £3 in a vinyl shop in Reading), but it very quickly turned into not only one of my favourite grind albums, but one of the best 80s metal records I own. Its production is rough, but not murky or ill-balanced in the slightest. The riffs are easily made out, which is great because most of them are awesome, and Dave Grave's drumming is hard-hitting, simple and tight as hell. The songs fly by as whirlwinds of intense thrash-grind with noisy Kerry King-esque guitar solos, and the vocals are just pefect for it.

The lyrics are graphic, the cover art is graphic, the approach is completely unsubtle and the album as a whole is a grimy, grinding display of bloody-minded ultra-thrash. It is, then, effectively a perfect early extreme metal record. One to listen to loud, while drinking heavily, thrashing around and talking about zombies. This is the kind of metal that's meant to be spelled out in capitals with five As and exclamation marks. 20 years have not dented its aggression, they've only driven its influence deeper into the world of heavy metal.

4 out of 5 stars FASTand RAW!.......2005-12-21

This is some great, old school, raw and cacophonous punk. I love it. I see from other reviews that Repulsion may have originated the blast beat, I'm not so sure though, Sepultura was blasting on their Bestial Devastation EP in '85. Anyone have any earlier examples?

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE FIRST!!.......2005-12-07

I allready nailed this one in my earlier review's..but the ZOGLAPSE re-release is fantastic!!

We get a remastered sound, photo's(minus the ''Hitler mustchae'') and a second disc of DEMO's!!

And all this for normal price$$$..

If you are a FAG..you dont know about REPULSION..REPULSION were one of the greatest band's ever, very simple!! and AMERICAN!!!!!

''ACID BATH''

4 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking album.......2005-06-19

Many people see Repulsion as the pioneers of Grindcore. I would have given this album 5 stars but the sound quality just isnt there due to limitations when this album was recorded. However, this is a cd that was brought back from the dead because of its influence on many grindcore acts that followed in the years to come. If you are into this kind of music as much as I am, this is a good CD to get that will give you a feel for this genre at its very inception.

Clint Eastwood's gritty boxing drama was the big winner at the 2005 Academy Awards, garnering Oscars for Best Film, Best Director (Eastwood), Best Actress (Hillary Swank) and Best Supporting Actor (Morgan Freeman). As it did for 2003's Mystic River, Eastwood's life-long love of music and budding confidence as a composer has led him again to score the film himself. Anchored by elegiac figures for solo acoustic guitar and piano, it often shares River's spacious, subtle introspection. But it's also occasionally seasoned with welcome dollops of jazz and blues, the byproduct of a longstanding love affair with American roots music that also yielded his Charlie Parker biopic Bird and the insightful, Eastwood-produced Thelonius Monk documentary, Straight No Chaser. If its haunting, gently yearning string arrangements lack the bombast and overwrought melodicism that fuel so many Hollywood vehicles, Eastwood's musical sensibility here echoes his contemporary evolution as an actor and director: Surprisingly modern, with an emotionally tender, less-as-more ethos that's light years removed from his action film roots. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Harmonious, Tender Soundtrack.......2007-01-22

This soundtrack is worth the buy! From first watching the film, I knew I had to have the music that accompanied it. The guitars gives soothing strains that calms the spirit, and the piano keys gives a satisfying blend of eloquence and rapture. I particularly enjoyed the recurring theme in "Blue Morgan," "Deep in Thought," and "Driving" (I still remember from this track the scene when Maggie said, "I ain't got nobody but you Frankie"). And "Frankie's Office" adds a touch of electric keyboarding that basically did it for me in pulling this whole album in full circle. I collect movie score soundtracks and I am very much pleased to add this to my collection!

4 out of 5 stars Million Dollar Baby - soundtrack.......2007-01-10

The simple, haunting melody of the recurring theme (It's Nice Viewing) reveals another facet of whom we know best as Dirty Harry - composer.
If you enjoyed the movie, having the soundtrack is a must.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible story of courage, determination and love.......2006-04-24

Incredible performances by Clint and Hillary Swank.

4 out of 5 stars Eastwood's score hits it where it counts.......2005-10-30

The score to Clint Eastwood's 'Million Dollar Baby' is perhaps the most beautiful film music I have ever heard.

The sound, most notably in the solo Guitar and Piano sections carries a simple, but thoroughly elegant, characteristic, and haunting melody that speaks right to the center of what this film is all about--pain, love, soul-searching, and finding hope, to name a few.

The music to this film also shows Eastwood's devotion and love of the story, and the music and the visual element click together in a way that few movies and scores match. The bittersweet, haunting refrain of the Piano and the equally bittersweet, hauting melody that is taken up, elaborated, and somewhat varied by the full orchestra serves as a beautiful foil and metaphore to echo the lighting of the film itself, and some of the sets, like the dismal, bare, dark set of the hospital late in the film.

The subtle variations that are present throughout make it even more wonderful, too. There are a couple Blues numbers in here too, which are no less wonderful than the rest, but do provide some lighter material as well.

The simplicity of it shines through especially brightly, as well. Most of the music is either the solo Piano or the Guitar, as I have mentioned above, but both show all the emotion without needing the backing of a large ensemble, though in this case, the orchestral sections do not steal the wonderful simplicity of the solo instruments.

This music has by far the most soul of any score I've heard, and I strongly reccommend you get it. Your money will be well spent. I had a lump in my throat from the first track to the last. Bravo, Clint!!

5 out of 5 stars If the movie OR the music didn't touch you--yer dead in the ring!.......2005-08-25

I say this to point out that there are no great films without great music, not just behind the story, but within it..and all wrapped up around it. By not overdoing the arrangements, Eastwood has finely crafted a deep and stirring ambience to accompany, enlighten, and balance the heavy emotion of the characters.

The "music" on this album is awful. The only two good songs are Radiation Sickness and Black Breath. The rest is just low quality blast beats, essentially culminating in noise. If you like good music, stay away from this.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite band..........2004-09-13

Just look at my name...Repulsion, was the first deathmetal band that got me into deathmetal. So, all the bands you listining to right now ? If its deathmetal, trust me, repulsion influenced them in every possible way. Its sad that so many dm bands now sound like crap and cheesy but hey we still got some amazing bands.Anyways, thank you repulsion for making me a fan of this genre for your great talent!

4 out of 5 stars Maggots In Your Coffin.......2003-07-18

1986 was an excellent year for metal. All four of the Big Four of Thrash released albums. Several lesser-known bands like Overkill and Dark Angel put out stunning albums. And one of the all time underground extreme metal greats was recorded.

Repulsion's 'Horrified' earned a status among tape traders almost equal to that of Hellhammer and Metallica in their heyday. And so it should have.

This was Death Metal before Death Metal. At the time, Death Metal was nothing more than an offshoot of Thrash, still in an embryonic state. 'Horrified' burst straight in and laid waste to all around it. The standard of production is incredibly good, shaming many which followed, like early Napalm Death, Carcass and Death.

What makes this album so outstanding is its extremity. It melded blistering speed (including blast beats), chunky guitars, death grunt vocals, and gory lyrics, providing the blueprint for countless bloodthirsty hordes of Gore Metal bands to follow. A lot of the song titles have reappeared since- "Six Feet Under", "Splattered Cadavers", "Acid Bath".

The songs generally rumble along at a constant velocity. Drummer Dave Grave mashed up the mix to keep it interesting, throwing in some impressive blasts. There is also the odd sparse guitar solo, similar to what Carcass produced on 'Symphonies of Sickness'. Yngwie Malmsteen it is not, but the off kilter guitar noises produced add an interesting flavour.

Like a majority of Death Metal vocalists, trying to decipher what the hell Scott Carlson is on about is nigh on impossible. On the odd occasion though, the vocals clear up a little, to good effect, particularly on the classic "Maggots In Your Coffin".

Not gaining a decent release until six years after it was recorded, Repulsion kind of missed the boat when Death Metal burst forth from the rotted corpse of Thrash. However, their influence is undeniable- Death, Autopsy, Napalm Death, Carcass, Necrophagia, Mortician, Suffocation. Chances are, if you are listening to a Gore Obsessed Death Metal band, Repulsion has been an influence somewhere along the line.
