Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David Horiuchi

Do I mean the best album or the best singer? You are correct if you said both! I saw Kristin Chenoweth on a PBS show "Broadway's Best at the Pops," (though it was not the first time I had heard her) and decided to check out the offerings here. This is a collection of the kind of music and performances I love. She has a great range, a precise pitch, and a great style that is at the same time true to the music and to herself. In an era when singers try to outdo each other re-interpreting the composer's original work, not usually with great success, she is a blessing!

After watching Candide endlessly and going to see Ms. Chenoweth in The Apple Tree, I was hungry for something more portable to listen to. At times this fits the bill, but what surprised me the most is how thin her voice comes across on this recording. Perhaps it was the joy of seeing her live that has ruined this listener; perhaps I need to upgrade my aging music system. Then again, maybe the recording is just not as good as Ms. C singing Bernstein or as good as staring at Ms. C command a Broadway stage.

I truly enjoy listening to this CD. Kristin Chenoweth's vocal style and abilities are very well-matched to the songs selected for this album. If you enjoy classic, older-style Broadway/popular tunes, I would highly recommend this CD. Ms. Chenoweth has a bright, expressive voice and does a fantastic job with this material.

As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.

This high pitched vocal goddess effortlessly provides for a nearly flawless and easy listening experience. I definitly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys jazz vocals, showtunes, or just a new spin on some old classics.

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.

Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14

City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:

Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25

1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:

This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulley

The original music is creative and very listenable. It is typical of popular music of the 1930s. This CD is highly recommended to those people who enjoy music from the 1920s and 1930s.

Better than the movie.......2004-12-08

Many people, I believe, buy a soundtrack because they are mesmerized by the movie and want to extend the experience by listening to something that reminds them of it. But "Gosford Park" is hardly that kind of movie. It is brilliant and atmospheric as it analyzes the British class system, but that's hardly the kind of thing that wins the heart. The soundtrack of this movie was my favorite CD from last year, and the reasons I liked it had nothing to do with the movie.

Why is this music so compelling and winning?

First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.

Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.

My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.

I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.

I don't mind the repeating themes, but the CD is too short!.......2004-06-08

Unlike many reviewers here, I didn't buy the CD to hear the Ivor Novello songs or Jeremy Northam's voice. I actually liked the instrumental tracks, and never actually thought I'd like to listen to something played on an accordion.

However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.

My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??

Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.

Excellent Mix.......2003-04-23

I fell in love with this soundtrack when I watched Gosford Park in the cinemas.

Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.

I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.

Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.

When I saw the movie at the theater I kept thinking I've got to have the soundtrack to this movie because it is so beautiful. I also really enjoyed the sung songs 6.And Her Mother Came Too, 10.I Can Give You The Starlight, 11.What A Duke Should Be, 16. Only For A While, 20. The Way It's Meant To Be, 24. The Land That Might-Have-Been!! I think that Patrick Doyle did a wonderful job of scoring this movie the just fits right in with it all, I only wish there was more to listen to!! I highly recommend this album to everyone who liked the movie and people who love great soundtracks, you will not be sorry if you buy this!!!!

In the 1960s, the Staple Singers began to make music that spoke to a wider audience than their core gospel fans. Gospel had served as the musical backbone for the Civil Rights movement from the beginning, but Pops Staples was spurred on by the inspirational messages of Martin Luther King Jr. to address more explicitly these issues. This 1972 record, an apex of groovy, mellow soul music (thanks to Al Bell's production and the definition-of-funky Muscle Shoals rhythm section), landed the group three Top 10 R&B hits and their first pop chart-topper, the joyous, bouncy "I'll Take You There." The Staples were always a one-of-a-kind gospel group; they managed to be the only one to inhabit the Top 10 without ever diluting their messages of tolerance, respect, and love. A great Stax album of the Staple Singers from 1972!!.......2007-02-09

This was the first album of the Staple Singers that I purchased on CD. I mainly got it to find out how their hit Respect Yourself sounds as well as I'll Take You There. I'm sure pleased that I did get this CD. Respect Yourself is almost five minutes long (while the single of it was only three and a half); this song is one of my favorite of theirs, as it tells you that if you disrespect anybody that you run into, you are disrespecting yourself as well. That is a great song. I also love I'll Take You There. The single of it is about three and a half minutes long, but on this album, you get the song in extended form. Love this song too!! I also like: This World, Are You Sure, We the People, I'm Just Another Soldier, and Name the Missing Word. Love this group. I have every one of their Stax album titles on CD. These folks are full of soul!!

This happens to be my favorite musical group of all time. Their songs are easy to understand the words to and the words are fantastic. Very spiritual/moving/meaningful but still a great sound!! Was one of my fav record albums in the 70's and now I have it as a fav CD in the 2000's!!

Ah, the Staple Singers. The soul group that brought me to soul. As an old punk rocker, old Bowie fan, and more, I just LOVE the Staple Singers. The musicianship is par excellence, and the singing is the sound of deep, moving musical moments. You cannont listen to this album and not be moved. Its just soooooo good. So good production, and the remastered version is absolutely fantastic. GET THIS ALBUM. Your life and soul will be greatly improved. I just wish there was more Staple Singers albums to listen to. They are all fantastic. Even live!!!!

Amazing skills, yet too busy for listening enjoyment.......2006-12-13

I can't believe how well John Bayless has mastered the piano. This is very obvious from the first song that you ever hear him play. I'd really like to watch him play in concert. However, the songs on this album are too much work for me to listen to. The music is so busy that I can hardly concentrate on the melody and it hardly gives me the peace I expect from traditional Christmas music. Some of my favorites for this category are Jim Brickman, David Huntsinger, and Tim Janis.

My favorite of the season.......2004-12-31

This is the holiday music I have listened to throughout the season, and it is so beautiful I cannot bear to put it away yet. I love Bayless's work at any time, and these arrangements simply take my breath away. His blending of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with "Going Home" from the New World Symphony is particulary poignant. And his signature "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring/Amazing Grace" is seasonless and timeless. Christmas is over, but get this anyway; it's wonderful.

David Lanz? Jim Brickman? John Tesh? Move over guys... John Bayless has done what no others could... Taken the xmas classics to a new level of musical enjoyment! By combining the songs together, and making them so rich and full of life, this will be my favorite Christmas CD for a looooooooooong time.

In fact, it's essentially a deep soul album in white-English-geek drag, from the Stax horns of "Would I Lie to You" to the guest shots by Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder to Lennox and Elvis Costello doing their best Marvin-and-Tammi impression on "Adrian." Eurythmics: Be Yourself Tonight (1985).......2005-10-10

In 1985, Eurythmics released their fourth album entitled, BE YOURSELF TONIGHT, an album that combined the mixture of 80s Synthesized Pop, and Rock. This album is another amazing release for Eurythmics. Five singles had been released from this amazing album but only four of them were hits had been, and they are hits that everybody should recognize today. This whole album should not only be recognized, but owned by every fan around the world.

WOULD I LIE TO YOU?
The first single from the album. At first, I was not too pleased with this song. But I decided to give it another chance, and now, I cannot get enough of hearing this song. A great hard rock sound, with added sound of...horns. Awesome.

THERE MUST BE AN ANGEL (PLAYING WITH MY HEART)
The second single from the album. This is an amazing song, where Annie's voice is soothing and beautiful. Make sure you listen to this song before taking off the album.

I LOVE YOU LIKE A BALL AND CHAIN
The fifth & final single from the album. This song should have been released as a single. I feel that if it was, it could have been a major hit.

SISTERS ARE DOIN' IT FOR THEMSELVES (Duet with Aretha Franklin)
The third single from the album. As a solo artists, I find Aretha Franklin to be rather weak. But I do enjoy hearing two of her songs and they are: "Respect" & "Chain Of Fools". But when she pairs up with another band or solo artist for a duet, I seem to find her at her strongest, especially here. Aretha teamed up with Eurythmics for this kick a** duet. A year after this duet, Aretha would go on to record a duet with George Michael entitled, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)".

CONDITIONED SOUL
This is another great song, where in the beginning a very influential Japanese sound is heard. Great song.

Great song.

IT'S ALRIGHT (BABY'S COMING BACK)
The fourth single from the album. Definitely an amazing song, with one hell of a music video.

This is another favorite song of mine. The sound is incredibly outstanding in every way.

This is an album that should definitely be found in the possession of every fan around the world. It is an amazing album all the way. If you look at the album's front cover, you'll see that Annie changed her appearance a bit. Her hair is still boyishly short, but not a crew-cut. She went from the spray-on orange color to her original natuarlly blonde look.

mixed emotions.......2005-01-07

Just when I thought I had Eurythmics all figured out, that they were the new Yazoo (incredibly gifted vocalist and an experimental, imaginative synth player ) along came BE YOURSELF TONIGHT, which threw me for a loop. My favourite tracks from this cd are the mostly synth based tracks like "it's alright baby's coming back' and " i love you like a ball and chain" because they remind me of the early years of Eurytmics ( synths and Annie's voice, which i adore)
This cd has a sort of organic feel to it, in that it has lots of acoustic instruments ( gritty guitars, strings, sax, etc) and sounds nothing like their first few albums. The songwriting is still strong, of course - top notch - but it's the excecution that I have a slight problem with. It sometimes sounds a little more mainstream than some of their earlier work, kind of a blue eyed soul approach, with all the horns and stuff. Otherwise, it's a pretty decent cd.

A New Sound; A New Voice.......2004-12-21

From the first few notes of "Would I Lie to You?," it was obvious that the Eurythmics had shed their cool, European sound for something totally new. I remember hearing the song for the first time on the radio and thinking, "What is this?"

On the Eurythmics' fifth studio album "Be Yourself Tonight," the duo tackle the sounds of North America. Drawing from R&B, the Annie and Dave create a brilliant synthesis of Euro Pop Rock and Motown, and with Annie's soulful vocals, how could they go wrong? In fact, Annie Lennox may be one of the few white women on the planet who would dare share a song alongside the legendary Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin (as witnessed on the feminist anthem "Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves").

The rest of the album is quite a gem as the band takes the listener on a journey through some well-crafted pop songs. From the gorgeous "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)" to the bitter "Better To Have Lost in Love," there's not a mistep on the entire album. "Adrian," a duet with Elvis Costello, is an instant classic; "Conditioned Soul" and "I Love You (Like A Ball And Chain)" show that Annie's lyrics still carry the irony and bitterness of their early work; but most precious of all is the powerful fourth single "It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)." This masterpiece is one of the centerpieces of the album. It showcases Annie's vocal abilities like no other song on the album (and arguably any other song from the band, period). Lennox delivers such a punch on this song, we almost forget the Eurythmics are a duo (sorry Dave!).

After twenty years, this is still a powerful album. In just a couple of listens, one can hear the hard work and creative energy that permeates this recording. Indeed, it's one of the band's finest works and holds some of the greatest hits of the mid-80s.

Eurythmics cut loose.......2004-06-15

Over the course of three albums, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart had carved a mighty impressive block of work. But for most, despite the great singles, Eurythmics were hampered by the limitations of a "new wave" sound. So when the MTV World Premiere (remember those?) debut of the video "Would I Lie To You" came on, what a shock to see Annie come out in a leather jacket as Dave coyly whispered in her ear..."just be yourself tonight"...and Annie wailed into Dave's ripping guitar chord with gale force soul.

All of a sudden, everything changed. Eurythmics had crossed the bridge from being a very interesting band to a great band. "Be Yourself Tonight" was their most ambitious album to that date; proving that the duo had more up their sleeves than previously thought. Hints of soul that dotted "Touch" and "Sweet Dreams" burst through on "There Must Be An Angel" (featuring not only Stevie Wonder on harmonica, but most of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers) in a manner that only Culture Club had even come close to. But there was no way Boy George would have ever kept up with Aretha Franklin the way that the empowerment anthem "Sisters are Doing It For Themselves" had Annie cavorting with the Queen herself. Yet at the same time, the lovely "Adrian" found Annie making a soulman out of Elvis Costello.

Even without the star power of the guests, "Be Yourself Tonight" shown bright on its own. Other, lesser heard songs like "Baby's Coming Back" and "Conditioned Soul" found Dave and Annie working the ideas found on the original albums with the addition of organic horns amidst the swirling synths. To bring the album to a rousing close, there was "Better To Have Lost In Love" which was the most human song that Lennox/Stewart had written.

If it isn't obvious that this is my favorite Eurythmics album, let me state it for the record now. One or two of the other albums may have sold better or been a shade more popular, but "Be Yourself Tonight" was the album that still holds a place in my CD collection. To me, it was the pivotal moment when Dave and Annie broke their icey veneer and really did "become themselves."

Awesome and moving.......2002-12-05

Whoah! This album kicks up a storm! I think it was intended as the band's excursion into R&B and Soul, but it's much more than that in its stylistic variety, many moods and moving songs. It starts revealing its pleasures with the uptempo Would I Lie To You, followed by the delicate pop of There Must Be An Angel, and reaches a climax on the duet with Aretha Franklin, a brilliant tour de force. Conditioned Soul is another gem with beautiful intricate and dramatic guitar infusions and Lennox at her vocal best on some of their most poetic lyrics. Not as resigned as Savage, Be Yourself Tonight still has an undertone of sorrow, as in the tender Adrian. A great slice of 80's R&B follows in the form of It's Alright, followed by the most sorrowful of all, the entrancing Here Comes That Sinking Feeling with its doubled-up vocals (one set sounding like it's spoken over the telephone) which gives it an eerie feel. It concludes with the bittersweet Better To Have Lost In Love, a haunting finale that is a rousing affirmation of hope. Some of Eurythmics most literate and profound work is found here, but it's serious stuff and not always as accessible as their other masterpieces like Sweet Dreams or Revenge. Then again, it's nowhere near as difficult as In The Garden or as bleak as Savage. Be Yourself Tonight is an album of real soul.

I wasn't into christmas that much because of all the mad rush at christmas, but since I bought this c.d. everything changed. I love christmas now and I am still playing that c.d. and it is already January. this is a great C.D. It is my favorite. I wish I would have owned it years ago. I just bought it this year.

It's been about 40 years since this Christmas album by Percy Faith was released. To this day it's a pleasure to listen to with its rich instrumental selections and voices. The title tune says it all! You will enjoy this for many Christmases to come!

Good Songs But They Should Have Digitally Remastered Them! The Sound Is Just A Little Off!.......2005-12-21

I too had the cassette tape of this Percy Faith Christmas album and updated to this CD and I love all of the songs and my favorite is We Need a Little Christmas. I do have one complaint and that is that the sound doesn't seem to have been remastered and seems kind of low. It's as though they didn't digitally remaster the original mono recordings.

One of my favorite records in my collection. Not the most lyrical however the beats alone are enough to get the job done. I've beatjuggled the single Jump On It/Sky's the Limit for like 2 years now. It never gets old to chop this up and play with the ill drum patterns. Hedz go out and cop this when you can. A+ material from one of hip hops finest producers!!!

OH MAN, these beats are insane!.......2006-07-28

NO I.D, the man responsible for the incredible production on Common's classics, "Resurrection" ('94) & "One Day..." ('97) - forges his own path on the criminally slept-on "Accept Your Own & Be Yourself."

First of all THESE BEATS ARE PRIME-CUT, AAA serloin type s**t. NO I.D, definitely kept some of his best material for himself, you couldn't ask for more.

The problem within this album lies in the MC's, NO I.D & his unknown buddy Dug Infinite (who appears on every track).
The first time the world heard NO I.D rhyme was on "Resurrection" on the classic track "In My Own World (Check the Method)." Verdict, he was pretty bland but along side Common he came off dope. That's the problem with this album, Common only appears on the track "State to State," leaving NO I.D to fill the void left by Com with the boring but bearable Dug Infinite. He gets the job done, but NO I.D really should have found a pro.
So what we have here is two medicore (at best) MC's trading rhymes over AMAZING BEATS. To be fair, they try their best - you can hear it in their rhymes, alot of the tracks have socially conscious (a la Common) themes and there's alot smart s**t being said by these two. They have brains and heart, just not much talent.

Bottom Line: Overall, this is a really good album. The beats are really dope and the MC's get the job done. I recommend it and I'm glad I bought it. 4 stars, Peace.

this album is simply amazing- if you can find it at your local record shop or 2nd hand cd store buy it right away.

NO I.D. til this day remains one hip hop's most clever as well as underated producers. He initially gained recognition with his monumental work setting the foundation for a majority of the the production backdrops for Common's first 3 albums. So in 97 NO I.D. along with partner in crime Dug Infinite teamed up and delivered "Accept Your Own & Be Yourself". This album should satisfy even the most critical of hip hop heads. True indeed NO I.D.'s rhymes and punchlines will not make you go and slap your moms, but his rhymes have plenty of strong messages and tons of substance. But you should cop this album for the beats more so than anything. This album should have gained a tad bit more publicity but the now defunct label Relativity wasn't too keen on marketing most of their acts throughout most of the 90's. Standout Tracks include "State to State" w/ Common Sense, "Sky's The Limit", "The Real Weight", and "Fate or Destiny". Amazingly a lot of hip hop purists out there don't even know who NO I.D. is. Don't sleep like so many others did.
