Maturity, style, restraint, and confidence mark the Vancouver string-bender's first album of his thirties, one that smartly balances Memphis-styled originals with elegant deep blues covers (Howlin' Wolf's "Forty-Four," Robert Johnson's "Walkin' Blues"). The classiest track on a very classy disc is "Freedom," a rich, horn-driven slow burner featuring Mavis. Once a likeable bantamweight, James is evolving fast into a heavyweight contemporary bluesman. --Jeff Bateman

One of Canada's best kept secrets..........2006-11-03
It's tempting (very much so) to compare Colin James with Stevie Ray Vaughan, but that doesn't really do him justice. Where SRV relied on himself and his guitar to drive almost every song, Colin's approach gives everyone involved their own space, making the album sound more like a band than a solo artist. This is a good thing. His discipline opens up everything for a collaboration that allows the music to rise above first glance expectations. The first time I listened to it, I gave it a nod as a decent piece of work. It was the third time around that I began to notice the little things that make the difference between a garden variety blues album suited to background music while balancing my checkbook and a carefully crafted effort that reveals a tacit love for the music they play, demanding the listener's attention and appreciation. The songs themselves fall into a fairly narrow range of blues and blues rock, but the variety he offers within that scope sets this album pretty close to the top of the genre.
Bad Habits.......2006-01-30
Colin James, rocker from Canada shows his blues talent on this CD. Very good effort and the beginning of a trend for Colin James. Actually, the trend began with 'The Little Big Band I' in 1993. This CD was a mix of rock and blues. The trend would then continue with 'National Steel' in 1997 and 'The Little Big Band II' in 1998.
bayou/funk from vancouver?.......2003-03-25
First off, I'm a strat playin blues dude, took a chance on this cd and WHEWEEEE this guy sounds like he's been hanging around with Dr. John for the last 20 yrs. Excellent production, vocals, kim wilson on harmonica. There is'nt a dog on this cd, 100% listenable. He's not Walter Trout or Alvin Lee, maybe Sonny Landreth kicked up a notch. Backup vocals & the B-3 round the cuts out to the max. I guess in Canada they don't believe in filler cuts. Ax players take notice, TONE TO THR BONE!!
A NOTHER GREAT BLUES CD.......2003-03-11
Once again I was too quick and reviewed this CD after only a couple of listens and got it wrong. After another week it has grown on me. The singing is like a slightly rougher ROBBEN FORD and suits most of these songs very well. The songs are excellent and the guitar work very tasteful. His phrasing and guitar styling at times sound familiar but he adds enough of his own to create his own style. His guitar tone is gorgeous, complimented by first class backing and superb production. Colin James promises great things for the future and I will have to buy the rest of his releases.
A great bluesman.......2003-02-14
Listening to this album is such musical pleasure. It has all the great stuff you could expect from a modern bluesman. Colin James is a world class guitar player, a grat singer with a great voice. His vocal performance on this album just blows me away. It is just awesome. The songs are very different which give a more interesting listening. If you like good music this one is a "must have".

Customer Reviews:
Awesome, classic punk.......2005-01-14
Back when punk was fun and it didn't have to be angry or only consist of three chords, there was a quriky little band called the Monks. The Monks were excellent musicians who never made it big, but had a little gem of an LP. High energy rockers like "Johnny B. Rotten", "Spotty Face", "Skylab", and actually, all the songs, filled the album and never got old. It's one of those rare records that never ages, but only grows on you with the age. Recommended to all music fans.
One Awesome Recording With Well Above Standard Energy Output.......2002-07-09
This band has more great tracks on this studio work than probably most groups have on Greatest Hit CD's. The Monks here are in a class of their own, focussing on Punk attributes but not in the elaborate way. The songs are mostly distinct, confident and worry-free while simultaneously providing subtle warning(s) about what in life can become of you if respect is not given to concern. What I like especially is the fact John Ford sings without hiding his British roots accent - a quality most British singer/songwriters blend around (although so `humbly` make sure to establish with talk and interviews). The work throughout includes upbeat, sorted originals - again all energy boosters at heart. Albeit the tracks tend to get a bit repetitious in style, for such an inspired group that only came to release two albums in three decades, I choose in particular to leave that aspect alone. Unfortunate the band had so much talent yet ultimately not enough motivation to keep itself consistent on level. Nevertheless, this album proves to rock fans of near every dimension that quality for the most part does in fact excel over quantity. An album I recommend (as the majority of other reviewers do) for any devoted CD collector, enabling he/she again the chance to feel musically significant or established...
Ahhh memories..........2001-11-15
This is the ultimate growing up in the 80's CD that was discovered by accident by most people, and made famous on the East Coast Alternative circuit by DJ Mark Weintraub. Nice Legs, Shame About 'er Face is the classic to get you hooked, and Skylab is the most random, surfy, grow on ya like moss kinda song that gets better with each repeated listen. Skylab has since fallen from the heavens into the sea, but the Monks still have a fresh and loveable sound to this day! Thanks Mr Weintraub-you really know your music!
Houston, We Have A Problem.......2001-05-22
A funny little LP, weighed down with junk, BAD HABITS still boasts a couple of nice tracks and one classic instrumental.
Though much of the album is made up of clumsy novelty records, "Love In Stereo" is a legitimate Pop song. It's almost ruined by that 1980s "new wave" keyboard sound, but manages to pull itself together anyway. "Nice Legs Shame About The Face" is a decent Pub-Rock tune, based on an age-old pub phrase, and "I Ain't Gettin' Any" is similar.
And then there's "Skylab (Theme From The Monks)." This instrumental absolutely sweapt thru my college dorm--I made sure of it by playing it monstrously loud at all hours of the day and night--and was a staple on the local alternative radio station for a while. Finding this pseudo-Ventures classic at the end of this LP is like finding a diamond ring at the bottom of your Cracker-Jack box.
Calling this a Punk album is a bit of a stretch, though. The Monks are to the Sex Pistols as the Rutles are to the Beatles, if you follow me.
Nostalgia Time.......2001-03-31
I've was digging through my old vinyl and came across my Monks, Bad Habits LP. I don't have a record player anymore, but couldn't resist purchasing the CD. I love it as much as I did back in the '80's. Brings back lots of good memories, but best of all it still is good, fun music. My kids see the humor in the music and have a hard time picturing me in the punk era. Is that good or bad?

Tight Band with Tasteful Fusion Elements!.......2003-03-04
Trilok Gurtu's band was fantastic at this point in his career. All the instrumentalists are supurb. The album flows very well from piece to piece. The guitarist David Gilmore (not Pink Floyd) is subtle and freely focused with his solos. Trilok astounds me as always, but even more so on this record. The Glimpse is his best effort and I would call this his second best. I have to remind myself that this is a live recording! Limited, if not OOP (3/25/2003). Fantastic spin!

Mine is that i'm a sucker for good lyrics! This collection of sounds is one of the few things that could make a person nostalgic for the 80's. Glam rock combined with sensitive writing. If you were a fan of music such as Toto and Styx then Its worth digging up a copy of this album!

Awesome authentic blues and harmonica.......2007-04-11
This is the real thing. Rock lived it and he gave it. You can hear it in his music. Too bad he's gone; he was creative, soulful, disarmingly truthful, genuine through and through. All this comes out in his music.
