Director Joel Schumacher, who went on to helm many big-budget, tiny-intellectual movies, gave us an 1980s update of the story of the vampire. It was all hip, good-looking, and tremendously vacuous. Similarly, the music doesn't break any new ground or offer much that's timeless. INXS' collaborations with Jimmy Barnes are fine, for instance, but Foreigner vocalist Lou Gramm's "Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys)" verges on the painful in a way that only overwrought 1980s music can. Roger Daltrey's take on Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is by the numbers, and so wasted. It's only Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of The Doors' "People Are Strange" that warrants much attention, even if it's, erm, buried. --Scott Wilson

lost boys original motion picture soundtrack.......2007-06-27
Great soundtrack except a few songs are not on it like Aint Got A Home.
Totally 80's, but I love it........2007-04-11
This music fits the movie perfectly. If you love the 80's, you will think this is very cool stuff. I'm still not sick of it 20 years later.
Not perfect, but way worthy.......2007-01-26
Just got my copy at home. The first time you spin it feels like most of the music ain't really worth playing (with notable exceptions mentioned later), yet, the second time you listen to it it gets way better. Its not really mainstream music, actually I would find this product more suitable to big The Lost Boys' fans, but themes like Cry Little Sister, I Still Believe, the People Are Strange cover, and the final track are all awesome.
badass.......2006-12-25
i admit this cd does not have much to offer, a few of the songs are just ok, but cry little sister is so awesome it makes up for it all!!
Review a little late............2006-11-19
What can I say, I'm lucky. I bought this when it was first released on tape!! It was awesome then and it still is. One of the best movie soundtracks ever ever release.

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

This eponymous album from the Italian singer Filippa Giordano confounds expectations. Released on the classical label Erato, Giordano mixes arias with contemporary songs such as the Ennio Morricone-Roger Waters "Lost Boys Calling" from the 1999 Golden Globe-winning movie The Legend of 1900. Using a conventional orchestra sometimes supplemented by electronic keyboards and occasional drums, the production achieves a slick and glossy chart-friendly sound that will find favor with fans of Whitney Houston and Céline Dion. Key to the album are two versions of "Casta Diva" from Bellini's Norma, between which arias from Samson and Dalila, Tosca, Carmen, and La Traviata sit rather uncomfortably alongside several pop anthems. With the vocal flavor of Broadway and a hint of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the intention seems to be to add contemporary crossover appeal to opera in much the same way that Andrea Bocelli has done with such conspicuous success. It's doubtful that serious opera aficionados will care much for Filippa Giordano, though music lovers in general may well find the album an attractive entry into the sometimes-forbidding world of the classical diva. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
Understand this album for what it is, and what it is not........2007-02-02
Opera aficianados take note - she is not an opera singer. It is pointless to consider her as one. You might as well snipe at a nasturtium for not being a rose. She is a pop singer. If you are looking for nuanced interpretations of classic bel canto opera, why the heck did you pick this album up in the first place? You know where to look already.
I completely disagree with the opera buffs who say that it is a travesty that she recorded these albums and besmirched the great masters. She did not record this for *you*. She recorded this for listeners of pop music. Have you heard what passes for pop music? Evidently not, or you would realize her albums far surpass everything currently in play... and if that is damning to pop music, well, so it is.
If one person... a single soul... listens to this album and is inspired enough to go out and listen to "the real thing" then Filippa Giordano has done them a great service and made the world a richer place. Opera aficionados are not born knowing and appreciating opera. One must be exposed to the music in the first place. Many people grow up having NEVER heard opera. This sort of album has a chance at being played in venues where Callas and Fleming couldn't get feet in the door. To the uninitiated, opera can seem bewildering and unintelligible, full of unfamiliar conventions. Filippa Giordano uses pop conventions to put these arias in musical terms that pop music lovers can grasp. Melodic familiarity goes miles toward connecting people to the emotional core of an operatic performance. Before you spew venom, consider that you are potentially thwarting a pathway that may lead to genuine appreciation of "real" opera down the pike. Bite your tongue. Go listen to your own recordings of the masters. You are right. They are infinitely more sophisticated. But this album has considerable value despite its flaws, and it wasn't created for you.
Opera Geeks, get a life.......2006-05-05
This is an album by a gifted pop singer singing some beautiful classical arias. Now, opera geeks are going apoplectic that this woman has the temerity to do so. I listen to opera, and I am occasionally relieved to hear CDs like this. It's nice not to hear a singer sounding like several people are tightening her Wagnerian corset so hard that she is expelling air through every orifice in her body. It is not the music that keeps opera unaccessible to everyone except pretentious pseudo-intellectuals (you don't need a Ph.D. to appreciate it). No, what has kept opera out of the mainstream is the constipated sounds too many opera singers make. If you like beautiful music sung well, if not brilliantly, you will like this CD. And for the record, I loathe C?line Dion's and Whitney Houston's music passionately, so don't let the first reviewer's comments dissuade you from this CD.
Distasteful...........2006-03-07
Do Banshees really exist ?. Yes they do.....and this abomination of musical history is proof of this....I cannot believe that a record company actually thought that they would even remotely break even on the sales of this grievous, flavorless, repellent and not to mention nauseous anathema of a recording. Shame on you young lady for destroying what were once, beautiful arias. A sad and unpassionate insult to great musical workmanship....
Not really opera, but fun anyway.......2006-02-03
As previous reviewers have said, "purist" opera fans would probably not consider this album to be opera, but it's still very enjoyable. Filippa Giordano will not likely be cast in a Wagnerian role anytime soon; she has a beautiful voice, but it does sound rather thin at times (she's no Maria Callas or Renee Fleming, in other words). It would be very easy to compare her to those other "(p)opera" divas, Sarah Brightman and Charlotte Church, but Filippa's sound is considerably more playful than Sarah's, and more sophisticated than Charlotte's. The highlights of this album are her renditions of "Casta Diva" and "Habanera," and I would recommend it for those two songs alone, but the rest of the album is also very good. This would be a great way to introduce a young person to the genre, as many of the songs could pass for pop songs.
Ummmm...........2005-11-29
Thousand pardons and all, but what on earth is she doing? If she wants to sing like this, fine and well, but why take perfectly fine operatic pieces that are special to some people and absolutely desecrate them by singing them like they are pop?
People who want to sing pop music should not go about advertising themselves as operatic singers, Giordano has the capacity to sing contemp. if she wants, but she obviously has not an operatic voice. If you like people being wormy and stealing from other genres, you will love this cd. If you like opera, you will not.

Jonatha Brooke's "I'll Try" is worth the purchase........2007-06-23
The soundtrack in total is better than most Disney Films...But the song "I'll Try" is a classic and the CD should be purchased to hear the singing and songwriting of Jonatha Brooke. Why this song did not get an Oscar nod, when songs of less substance do each year is perplexing. If you liked the film or did not even see it...the CD is worth the price. In addition Jonatha Brooke has many more CDs out of her music and one can instantly be hooked (no pun intended) at first listen...
Loved It! Loved It! Loved It!.......2006-02-25
When I saw the movie, I first saw it in the movie theater and then on Disney Channel. I heard the song "I'll Try" and immediatly wanted the soundtrack. I also wanted the movie. Jonatha Brooke's song made me want to fly. :) I personally never want to grow up and this movie and song help you stay childish and care-free longer. It trully is a beautiful song and a beautiful movie.
"I'll Try".......2005-02-17
The movie was okay, but the song "I'll Try" just made me want to see it again and again. It's so great!! I love it!!
Jonatha Brooke.......2003-06-19
Have to say I hated the movie, but when the song 'I'll Try' played, I immediately recognized the amazing talent of Jonatha Brooke. It is a beautiful song and if you enjoy it, I highly recommend you listen to her other stuff. She has several solo albums, all of which are good, but her best work (in my opinion)is the stuff she did as part of a Boston based duo called 'The Story'. Their album 'Grace in Gravity', is one of my all time favorites. The harmonies on the album are astounding and complex. Jonatha has a penchant for minor keys and her phrasing is unmistakeable. Superb stuff for the music enthusiast.

Personally I love Peter Pan things and that "I'll Try..."song made me cry when I saw it in the movie theater,And really all these songs are great...They make me feel like I never wanna grow up also...:)Those songs have that way that move you,Like make you sad....And man...I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!:)PETER PAN ALL THE WAY!Wahooo!:)

Surfin' is the only life........2006-03-01
This CD features the pre-Capitol recordings of the Beach Boys. Before signing with Capitol Records, the Beach Boys recorded six songs for producer Hite Morgan. Six songs would make a pretty short CD, so the CD is padded out with alternate takes, audition demos and two songs by "Kenny and the Cadets" with Brian Wilson on lead vocals. "Surfin'", their first single, got to #75 on the Hot 100 and got them signed to Capitol Records. And the rest is history. The recordings on this CD aren't bad, but they aren't nearly as good as the Beach Boys later recordings. And it's a bit repetitive hearing "Surfin'", "Luau" and "Surfin' Safari" three times each. Still, this is a historically important CD that should be of interest to Beach Boys fans.
Not one for casual fans.......2005-03-17
You won't have heard any of these on your local "oldies" station. What this collects is very early material the group recorded with producer Hite Morgan and his wife.
It's interesting for the group's biggest fans to hear the demos of "Luau" and "surfin'" (the songs from their very first single ever released on Candix records). You'll also get a rare recording of Brian Wilson and his mother performing together as "Kenny and the Cadets", a rare instrumental ("Karate", also sometimes referred to as "Beach Boy Stomp"), an ode to Brian Wilson's girlfriend ("Judy") and a previously unissued demo from 1961 ("Lavender")
High Points: Track 6 "Surfin'" is the template for the earliest hits the band would have in their "sun and fun" period. It doesn't stand alongside finer material like "Surfin' U.S.A." but it points the way toward what they would become. "What is a Young Girl Made of?" is the better of the Kenny and the Cadets songs, an uptempo tune that sounds like a lost 50s track. An early version of "Surfin' Safari" has some minor lyric differences. (Track 14) The Candix rendition of "Surfer Girl" shows a much more garage band influence as Dennis Wilson struggles to hold the brushed snare rhythm. The guitars are also mixed much lower here than the more familiar hit. "Judy" is a nicely sloppy lovesong with a chugging bassline.
Lows:
"Barbie" suffers from horrid background tracks, a treacly lyric, and a poor falsetto from Brian. "Beach Boy Stomp" is an interesting instrumental but the band isn't tight enough to really pull it off. An early overdub attempt on "Surfin' Safari" (Track 20) was wisely left in the can at the time. (Brian attempted to paste a Duane Eddyish guitar into one channel). "Lavender" is a Four Freshmen styled acappella tune that shows the band's harmonies are close to full bloom but it's just a demo. With full production, it might have been as special as "Their Hearts were Full of Spring" in the Beach Boys canon.
Bottom Line:
Mostly useful as a historical document. It's hard to hear some of these tracks and realize that they would go on to become one of the (THE?) most influential and creative pop groups ever.
Best quality CD produced of the band's pre-Capitol sessions........1999-10-03
In its wisdom, RCA bought Elvis' original Sun recordings -- masters, alternates, outtakes, etc. and compiled them on the SUN SESSIONS CD. Likewise, the greatest American pop band has this offering, in two different sets of artwork. Tho' the group photo cover is shown above, it's inaccurate by about two years and the absence of guitarist David Marks. The material consists of early versions, working demos, & final masters of the dozen or so songs the young Beach Boys record- ed with Hite & Dorinda Morgan, publishers/producers. This is an historical CD, and not really meant to be put on at a party (try the PARTY! or 20/20 or SUMMER IN PARADISE CDs for that). It's also an excellent insight for young musicians to see how teenagers can put together demos, which in this case, impressed Capitol Records enough for a contract.

Even Jello saves room for 'em.......2005-12-11
You can't go wrong with this album. MIA was an influential part of California punk rock. In this tidy little package, you get all their great songs. Miss these guys like crazy. Gotta love the orange vinyl also!
The "original" M.I.A........2005-08-23
First of all I think it is VERY important to clear up something here: This is the only release you will find available by this M.I.A.!!! The other band calling themselves M.I.A. is NOT the same band and has NOTHING to do with this one. I don't know why the other band's album is being paired with this one. The M.I.A. I am about to review is an American melodic Punk/Hardcore band whose career lasted from 1981 to 1987. The "other" M.I.A. is a hip-hop band from Sri Lanka whose career is more current.
With that out of the way, let's talk about this VERY essential slice of American Punk history. "Lost Boys" is a compilation of M.I.A.'s earlier works. Included in their entirety on this compilation are the first album from 1982 ("Last Rites") and the 1984 Hardcore classic "Murder In A Foreign Place" LP. There are tons of bonus tracks included: rare compilation tracks, unreleased demos, and live tracks. M.I.A. was one of the most severely underrated bands of their day. They deserve to be held in regard with the same amount of importance as bands like Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Descendents, D.O.A., Adolescents, Circle Jerks, etc. but for some reason have been swept under the carpet of history. Listen for yourself... this is some of the best American Punk Rock ever recorded. It's tight, energetic, melodic without sounding wimpy, and the lyrics are meaningful without being preachy. Who knows? Maybe in this day and age of old punks cashing in on past glories, the complete absence of any reunions, marketing gimmicks, etc. has left M.I.A.'s memory intact in the 80's.
All the more reason to buy this album. This is a crucial part of 80's Punk history and the songs sound just as fresh, exciting, and thought-provoking as they did 20-plus years ago. Many of them are just as relevant, if not even MORE relevant today as they were back then. Just a few years ago a song like "Gas Crisis" would have been considered very dated, but have you been to the gas pumps lately? "Murder in a Foreign Place" applies more today than it did at the time of it's release in 1984, and "Tell Me Why" is a question EVERYONE ought to be asking themselves these days.
Bottom line: If you like your Punk Rock authentic and well above average, then buy this one fast!
Essential with a capital "E".......2004-02-26
Aside from a handful of bands, incliding Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and early Circle Jerks, I've never cared for hardcore. I don't get the "faster is better" mentality and feel that most HC bands simply lacked musical skill and, more often, originality (remember those bands on Mystic Records?). I suppose it has to do with the manner in which you define hardcore.
MIA, for example, are generally classified as a HC band, and the description actually does fit. They could play as fast and hard as anyone, but they also were skilled songwriters and musicians who were smart enough to include powerful, melodic midtempo numbers in their sets to keep things interesting. In other words, these guys had taste.
This collection will not dissapoint any fan of REAL punk rock. Even if you tend to favor the late seventies variety, as I do, you can't go wrong with "Lost Boys".
PS: If you have a turntable, get the double LP set on orange vinyl!
The BEST melodic hardcore punk band of all times.......2003-11-08
M.I.A. were an absolutely AMAZING hardcore band. They started in Las Vegas in 1980, made four GREAT records and disbanded in 1988. This cd contains the first two of them, Last Rites(1982)and Murder In A Foreign Place(1984)plus many demos, outtakes, compilation and live tracks. Both of them are excellent, with great powerfull catchy songs, melodies, speed, noise, everything. The band plays melodic west cost hardcore at its best but there are also different moods in their songs. You can hear classic hardcore, surf-punk, thrash, punk-pop and some gloomier songs like "There Is No Love". Their sound is noisy and melodic at the same time, the rhythm section plays as fast as anyone can play on one song, then slows down a little bit for the surf-punk madness and above all that are the incredible voice of Mike Conley and the amazing wall of guitar sound of Nick Adams. Everyone who listens hardcore punk must buy this cd because M.I.A. WERE ONE OF THE BEST BANDS OF THE DECADE.
Unearthed treasures.......2001-08-29
History has basically forgotten MIA, but in the mid-1980s (a.k.a. When Punk Rock Was Not On the Radio Because It Still Scared the Hell Out of John Q Public,) they were at the top of the heap in the punk scene. If the Murder In A Foreign Place/Notes From Underground line-up had never disbanded, they probably would have been at least as successful as, say, Social Distortion. But unfortunately they did splinter apart, got one final line-up together, released a last gasp of an album that simply wasn't very good (losing guitarist Nick Adams was probably the biggest blow) and then called it quits. While pretty much everything on this CD is high quality punk rock from a time when it actually had spirit, the Murder In A Foreign Place EP (tracks 1-11 on this disc) is easily worth the price itself. You'll never hear better melodic hardcore than this, it's an all-time classic. It's great to finally hear the earlier tracks from the Last Rites split LP, because now I finally understand why people used to say that MIA sounded like Agent Orange. In short, this is a crucial must-have for any fan of early/mid 80s punk.

Customer Reviews:
Love their rendition of Dillon's "Masters of War".......2007-03-24
Fantastic group from England. They do mostly or all covers. I love the accapella (excuse spelling errors) versions of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," and "Tears of a Clown," but their version of Dillon's "Masters of War," is the best. The song should be blaring from every radio today. Check it out. I don't think there is a song on this album that I don't like. Make sure the version you get has "Masters of War" on it. My first CD got stolen, and the one it was replaced with didn't have that song. I have it again, thanks to the internet.
The one that got me hooked.......2000-08-04
Usually when the word radical is used about a piece of music it means that it's unusual (or you're under 25). With the Flying Pickets, and especially this album, it refers to the politics. Most of the album is covers, but my favorite tracks were written by Rick Lloyd. *Remember This* is an upbeat number that includes the lyrics, "Remember this, requiems don't quite make up for the loss of a life." *Disco Down* and *Wide Boy* (a British slang term that is roughly the equivalent of 'gangbanger') are both social commentary about the problems (and escape from them) of a disaffected and largely unemployed young underclass. The most devastating and beautiful of these songs is *So Close* a love song about the necessity of breaking up with someone who disagrees with you politically.
Musically, every member of the group sings lead at some point. Gareth Williams, their usual bass man, is glorious on almost every track. Red Stripe does *Masters of War*, Rick Lloyd sings his own *Disco Down* and also the cover *Psycho Killer* (When I saw them live in 1985 he was absolutely frightening on this one). Brian Hibbard sings lead on the 2 top 10 hits *When You're Young and In Love* and *Only You*. Ken Gregson is responible for most of the sound effects. David Brett's is usually the first voice you hear on the track (bass on *Remember This*; tenor lead on *I Heard it Through the Grapevine*). Mostly though it's the lushness of the harmonies that you take away from listening to this lovely album.
Now if we can just get their earliest album "Live at the Albany Empire" onto CD I'll be happy.
one of the best.......2000-05-05
If you have more than ten cd's then this should be one of them

Sir Thomas Allen makes the point in a note with this delightful collection of 25 ballads that he rates it beside his many recordings of music heavyweights like Wagner and Verdi. There is no need to justify his enthusiasm, for it is clear from the outset that he treats the music with the sort of complete respect that has made him one of our most-loved singers. It is too easy to be dismissive of this repertoire, but when it is taken at its own value and sung and played with honesty, as it is here, the results are heartwarming. Allen recalls hearing the songs in the family home following the two world wars, "a time when there seemed a need for reassurance." Perhaps that time is with us again, and these performances strike a chord. There are many old friends here and perhaps some new discoveries. Who can resist the beautifully constructed "Love, could I only tell thee" or that old potboiler "The Lost Chord", especially when given with such warmth? A picture shows Allen and family in full vocal spate. At the piano is his father, to whose memory he dedicates the disc. --Keith Clarke
