Somewhere in Ronnie James Dio's attic is a portrait of a decrepit rock star growing old in his place. There's no other explanation; Killing the Dragon proves that the vocalist's career is boundless, as he keeps putting out excellent albums. Unlike his previous release (the excellent concept album Magica), Dio goes for a more straightforward metal approach here. New guitarist Doug Aldrich captures the classic Dio sound on the fast-paced "Better in the Dark" and the title track, with its memorable riffs and blistering solos. "Throw Away Children," which deals with the death of a runaway girl, is as passionate musically as it is lyrically, while the dark anthem "Rock & Roll" is hypnotic and Sabbath-like as it builds at a slow and heavy-handed pace. In all, it's a solid collection of traditional metal rockers, all of which are wonderfully recognizable as Dio standards. Only death and taxes are more reliable than he is. --Gail Flug
Album Description
With Killing the Dragon, the majesty and mystery of Dio returns full force. Welcoming new guitarist Doug Aldrich, Dio has crafted yet another timeless and unparalleled gift to the heavy metal lexicon. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Great guitar work, lyrics are the flaw.......2007-03-31
I love Dio and Doug Aldrich brings a very welcome addition to the Dio line up, too bad he didn't stay on. This cd is pretty solid and Dio fans should be pleased but the lyrics are weak as is apparent in the title mishap. The title track is killer, the verbiage is wrong. Master of the Moon musically is dragging, but the lyrics there are not - too bad we can't merge the two.
Back to the Eighties.......2006-08-07
Dio goes back to the eighties metal style, and this album is good. This album is as good as The Last In Line, so it must be good, very good. But the reason why it was a bit of a disapointing album for me is because I expected anoter masterpiece like Magica. Killing the Dragon is great, but not as powerful as Magica. But this album is still very good, the only weak song is Before the Fall, the rest is great. My favorite songs are Throw Away Children, Killing The Dragon and Scream. The new guitarist is also very good, his style is similar to Vivian Campbell's style. Ronnie James Dio sings great as always and the rest of the band is good too.
The band is:
Ronnie James Dio - Vocals
Doug Aldrich - Guitars
Simon Wright - Drums
Jimmy Bain - Bass
Scot Warren - Keyboards

A few great songs save this otherwise mediocre album........2006-05-01
KILLING THE DRAGON is somewhat of a return to the classic (pre-Dehumanizer) Dio formula; you get plenty of fast, intense songs, powerful vocals, typical Dio lyrical content, blazing guitar solos, etc, etc. This was obviously a calculated move, and probably a good move as far as most Dio fans are concerned, but unfortunately there just aren't enough good songs to make this a truly classic album. Fortunately we get three truly great, classic songs: 1) "Killing the Dragon", a nasty slab of classic metal with a great lyrical statement: Dio is back and it's "time to be killing the dragon again!". 2) "Rock and Roll", ranks as one of Dio's best and most classic "slow and heavy" numbers, with great insightful lyrics and a sing-along chorus that is tailor-made for a crowd sing-along in a live setting. 3) "Push", an uncharacteristically pop-metal song for recent Dio material, but great none-the-less, and features one of the only truly well crafted and memorable guitar solos on the album (I'm betting Craig Goldie demoed this solo and Aldritch copied it).
Unfortunately most of the rest of the album is filler. The formula is right, but the songwriting is just not up to par. Also, while guitarist Doug Aldritch has chops for days, shreds all over the place like a demon, and is stylistically similar to Vivian Campbell, his playing just isn't memorable in my opinion. His licks are fast and impressive, but they just don't stick in my head. Vivian Campbell and Craig Goldie always created distinctive melodies within their solos that stuck in my head and elevated the song as a whole; Doug Aldritch's playing just doesn't seem to have that same quality.
This would probably have been a weak three-star album if not for the songs "Killing the Dragon", "Rock and Roll", and "Push". They are all on my list of Dio's "greatest hits". These songs are so good, and I find myself listening to them so often, that they warrant the four-star rating I gave this album. No Dio fan should be without these songs, so don't hesitate to buy KILLING THE DRAGON!
The third best CD Dio has released as a solo band........2006-03-11
The production levels are excellent, the musicians are great; this is the best band that Dio has had assembled since the "Last in Line"/ "Holy Diver" line-up. Dougie Aldrich is a very complete heavy metal guitarist that plays a bluesy pop style with melodic power chords and fantastic leads, but that is still very heavy sounding. This CD has four standout songs to my mind: "Killing the Dragon", "Rock and Roll", "Guilty" and "Push". The rest of the songs are so so but are injected with energy and made palatible by Aldrich's ear-catching rhythm sections... Actually, "Scream" and "Along comes a Spider" are good, as well. No other Dio album (besides the Live ones) has come close to this in recent years.
Killing the Dragon ~ Dio.......2006-02-03
Dio is back on track! After the great magica he releases this masterpiece. Maybe this one is even better then Magica, but I'm not sure about that at all. This album kicks ass! This is an album that could have been released right after The Last In Line! Does Dio sounds that good? YES HE DOES! DIO MEANS GOD AND THAT IS WHAT HE IS FOR SURE! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! With Magica and this album he makes up what he did to us with Strange Highways and Angry machines. No, these albums weren't that bad, I would give them both 3 stars. But it were disapointing albums, and Magica and Killing the Dragon aren't at all disapointing! I will rate the songs for you:
1. Killing The Dragon(10/10)
2. Along Comes A Spider(10/10)
3. Scream(10/10)
4. Better In The Dark(10/10)
5. Rock & Roll(10/10)
6. Push(9/10)
7. Guilty(8/10)
8. Throw Away Children(10/10)
9. Before The Fall(8/10)
10. Cold Feet(7/10)
So as you can see, this album is great, it rocks! If you are a metal fan, then you must own this album! DIO ROCKS! \m/

Best Metal CD in awhile that no one will hear!.......2005-08-30
Dio fans must go out and buy this cd to show Ronnie James Dio that he still carries the metal flame! To me this is as good as a metal cd can get and is still refreshing to hear over the garbage that is on the radio today! The band sounds good and looks good in the video for "Push" that is included hear plus the cool looking screensaver. BUY IT NOW!
best metal record is years!.......2004-08-19
DIO comes threw again like only he can, truly amazing!
Killing my ears.......2004-03-17
I bought this album, just because i love Magica. This is not Magica 2, Dio has lost what he had on the previous album. There is still some good guitar riffs, but Dio has had those for many years, and they don't save his ass, sorry! But hey, the music video is quite fun.
Dio - 'Killing The Dragon'.......2003-05-05
Never would I have believed I would have to use the term `washed up'. In his prime `Leather Lungs' spurred on millions with releases like `Holy Diver', 'The Last In Line' & 'Sacred Heart' and his `visit' to both Sabbath and Rainbow contributed to some memorable songs.
Roll on `Killing The Dragon'. The title track delivers a powerful onslaught of the magnitude that all Dio stood and stands for ....I think...Big voice, big guitars, big drums....but hey in the `80's the sound was all about `big'. `Along Comes A Spider' chugs along nicely with Dio belting out utterances like no other......by the third track, `Scream' I'm fiddling with the remote. By track four `Better In The Dark', I'm wondering if it will sound better with the lights off? What do I mean by better, it's just that when you've heard one track you've heard them all. .........Perhaps in this day an age where albums have twelve plus tracks, the ten on offer here are a guideline that the Dio dragon is running low on fire-power....If you're a die hard Dio fanatic, here's another one for the collection.......I say it's time for a `Best of' and then either change direction or hang up your lungs.

As much as he'd like, we'll never get another Holy Diver.......2002-09-14
This is a good album, but sounds like he tried to mix 'Wolves' with the previous outing, Magica. Bring back Vinnie, reunite with Ritchie or Tony, but stop it with these albums. He still has the golden voice that made Holy Diver thru Strange Highways so great, but the lyrics reak and his guitarist tries to steal the show. It's almost like trying to put lyrics to Satriani's solos, it just doesn't happen. Chalk up another one in the dump bin along with Angry Machines. By the way, what's the name of the bonus track, as Amazon won't say.
