Customer Reviews:
A great singer sings of his homeland. .......2005-04-03
Although I have listened to singers for more than sixty years, I have rarely heard a more exciting or beautiful voice than that of Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Listening to him makes me regret that sound is something that comes and goes, something that cannot be photographed or hung on the wall to view permanently. Some singers would give an arm and a leg to have some of Hvorostsovsky' s notes in their register. All his notes, from top to bottom of his register and whether delivered softly or loudly, are sublimely beautiful.
Early in the 1990s he combined with the famed Ossipov Russian Folk Orchestra to record a batch of Russian folksongs, found on this Philips 56 minute CD. Some, including the title piece "Dark Eyes" are known everywhere. Others are certainly new to me. Hvorostovsky, born in Siberia, sings unaccompanied in two of the tracks and the orchestra have three tracks to themselves.
I especially like the second track, "A Snowstorm Blows". Full texts and translations are provided in the booklet, as well as a fine introductory article by Hvorostovsky himself.
You have to hear this - it is simply stunning!!!.......2002-01-09
This is my most favorite recording of Hvorostovsky and I would highly recommend it to everybody who wants to hear a deeply touching performance of the best Russian folk songs, by the best Russian singer.
For those who know and love Russian folk, Hvorostovsky's performance was a huge news some years ago. A young Siberean boy dared to compete with the most famous Russian legends of the past, such as Shaliapin and Lemeshev, by singing their number one favourites. And won! And, not by way of copying anybody, but simply by being himself!
For those who is not familiar with Russian folk at all - this is the best place to start. Even for the spoiled modern youth, like myself, listenning to this recording was and still is a shocking experience. It is true, it is modern, and it is deeply passionate. Many performers attempt to revitalize old crafts by converting them into modern shapes. Hvorostovsky does nothing like that. He just sings and he also lives in his each and every song. And because his rage and passion are so real and modern, and his voice is so strong and beautiful, it makes you completely forget about sometimes odd wording. Moreover, it makes you like it. He makes you feel the voice of the great nation, coming from the depth of his heart. And it is so moving, sometimes you can hardly hold your tears. Yet, he never changes a word of the original text or the appropriate music or even the intonations. He is very careful and tactful with the originals, but he brings up the best this music has inside. Since making this recording, Hvorovstovsky, of course, has made huge steps ahead. Today he sings in the best theatres of the world, he participates in the best, the most famous performances. Yet, this old recording is very dear to me. Not just because it is my first recording of Hvorostovsky. But because it is so powerful and strong that once listenning to it, you will never forget it. And it is also so deeply Russian, so unique and unforgettable, that nobody in the World can ever repeat it. And noone will.
lots of Russian soul.......2001-12-17
This is a great collection of folk songs, sung with passion and beauty by one of the most celebrated voices of our era...it also includes 3 instrumentals, tracks # 5 and # 9, which are fast dance numbers in the "dueling balalaikas" tradition, and # 13, which is an exquisite slow piece, with a flute that sounds like a bird song.
Tracks # 4 and # 15 are sung a cappella, as Hvorostovsky says, "...in honor of Chaliapin, but in my own way". He also says: "The songs I selected I feel are truly Russian - many are melancholy, most are bittersweet, with the kind of irony which counterbalances sentimentality".
Perhaps the most familiar to Western ears is "Ochi chornyje" ("Dark Eyes"), but other melodic favorites for me are also # 7 "Svidan'je", and # 10 "Elegia".
Recorded in '91, this is very different from the the CD of folk songs Hvorostovsky released in '98 titled "Kalinka", with the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir, which has more of a "classical" feel to it, while this has more of a "rustic" feel...but both CDs are terrific in their own distinctive ways.
The booklet contains the lyrics to the 13 songs, in English and transliterated Russian, and Nikolai Kalinin's Ossipov Russian Folk Orchestra is superb, with its traditional sound and performance marvelous paired with Dmitri's grand and glorious voice.
Singing so good the songs can't get out of one's head........1999-06-06
For a few days after I first heard 'The Meeting', snatches of the melody lingered and made me wish I could sing in Russian. Then another song on this CD had the same effect, and another still. Hvorostovsky's philosophy of doing justice to the repertoire of his native place has produced a wonderful result. A delightful contrast to the later 'Kalinka'.

Album Description
Mikhail Glinka, the "father of Russian music" and a lyrical, refreshing Early Romantic, is surprisingly little known in the West, outside of one or two short orchestral pieces, principally the irresistibly energetic "Ruslan and Ludmila" overture. That concert favorite is joined here by a treasury of orchestral gems from various Glinka operas that are hardly ever staged outside of Russia. These historic recordings are from 1963 through 1990.
Customer Reviews:
Get this great Russian Music.......2005-02-10
I have eyed this CD many times as I already had a few of the selections but not all of them. I am a big fan of Russian Classical so I recently bit the bullet and bought the CD and it is well worth more than the $11 price.
Evgeni Svetlanov conducts with the USSR Symphony Orchestra and they are superb. In my opinion Svetlanov is the best Russian conductor. The pieces that I already had were better on this recording, and the pieces that I was missing are a great addition.
Everything is incidental music from Glinka's operas so there is no singers or chorus. I especially like the "Overture from Ivan Susanin" and "In Nian's Castle from Ruslan & Lyudmila". They are seldom heard but very melodic and colorful. They alone are worth the price of the CD. On the other hand the "Overture Ruslan & Lyudmila" is very over played (I have 5 recordings now) but this is an excellent version and so still enjoyable.
I suggest you get this CD.

A Wonderful Voice From The Past.......2006-07-27
This two-disc set gives a good overview of the great Russian Bass singer. It has a total of 36 selections, and covers the years 1911 to 1936.
With a voice of tremendous range and power, Chaliapin could also sing softly and with feeling. A very flexible instrument that comes through the old recording technology of the 78 record era. A good example of the pure physical gifts of his voice is 'Farlaf's Rondo' by Glinka. A 'patter' song, with words and syllables sung rapidly and seemingly without taking a breath. As if the performance wasn't difficult enough, Chaliapin speeds up the tempo at the ending of the rondo! It shows the breath control he had, and while the singer seems to be none of the worst for wear, I was left breathless just listening!
Two selections, Boris' Monologue from 'Boris Godounov' and 'Song of The Flea', by Mussorgsky, are represented by two different performances. This gives a good idea of the breadth of Chaliapin's art, as each performance of the same work is full of nuance and artistry. It is hard for me to pick which performance I like best. As with any great artist, each time a work is performed it is not just a repitition, but a unique recreation.
The transfers naturally have much surface noise, as all are from the 78 rpm record era. I have most of these recordings on transfers to LP's and the noise is much more apparant than on the CD transfers. With older recordings such as these, any transfers and 'cleaning up' of the sound can only go so far. If too much of the noise from the originals is 'cleaned up', the recording can lose presence. Whomever engineered the transfers to CD has hit a happy middle ground. The background noise is still there, but not so annoying as on LP, while the sound of the actual music and Chaliapin's voice seems much more alive.
What I have read about Chaliapin says that he was not only a great singer, but a great actor also. The two do not always go together, for a great voice in opera can make up for a lack of acting ability. To have both talents rolled into one is rare. Contemporary accounts of Chaliapin's operatic performances comment as much on his acting as his singing. There arevideos of his film performance in Ibert's Don Quichotte, which I want to see when I have the chance.
If you're passion is the human voice, you must hear Chaliapin. It is not possible to say he or anyone else was the best. But these recordings show he was a consummate artist, and are well worth exploring.
Recommended.
Chaliapin - Prima Voce.......2006-03-18
The recordings are old but the only way one can hear a legend!
The selections are excellent and the quality is as one would expect from this vintage recording.
I enjoy going back to hear these voices and this is the only way to understand the history

Overlooked hard rock gem .......2007-04-07
THE BAND: Marq Torien (vocals), Mick Sweda (guitars), Lonnie Vencent (bass), Jimmy D'Anda (drums & percussion).
THE DISC: (1993) 11 tracks clocking in approximately 36 minutes. Included with the disc is a 14-page booklet containing song titles/credits/times, song lyrics, black & white individual band member photos, and thank you's. All songs written by the Bulletboys. Recorded at One On One Studios / Alpha Studios / Larrabee North - all in the Los Angeles area. Producer - Ted Templeman. Label - Warner Bros.
COMMENTS: You may have heard the Bulletboys were a poor man's Van Halen. Yes and no. Singer Torien had some similarities to David Lee Roth in hair, antics and swagger... and maybe a few yelps. Guitarist Sweda had some great chops, but is/was/never will be in the same league as Eddie Van Halen. Short albums like this one, matched most of the DLR era VH albums... all in the 30+ minute range. And, the last similarity might be the man behind the controls, Ted Templeman. The Bulletboys took off with their amazing 1989 debut, had mild success with "Freakshow" (1991), and then just kind of fizzled with "Za-Za". I liked "Freakshow" (and the one major hit "Hang On St. Christopher"), but years later I feel this is their weakest album. I believe "Za-Za" to be the band's deepest, most complex and varied release. Where the Bulletboys debut was straight ahead in your face glorious hard rock (a true classic of the time)... "Za-Za" has some of those same style tunes, but dared to mix it up. Highlights - the hard rockers include the humorous "When Pigs Fly", "1-800-Goodbye", "The Show" and "Fess"; the slow doo-wop "Mine"; the uplifting sweet rocker "Sing A Song"; and two of my all-time favorite BB's tracks - "For The Damned" and "Laughing With The Dead". Years later, I still pull this disc out frequently. If you followed 80's hard rock, "Za-Za" is a must own (4 stars).
Overlooked album and band.......2004-06-10
By the time this album was released, musical tastes had drastically changed. Za-Za, was completely overlooked even by people who were previously fans of the band. This is unfortunate, because this was the best album to date by the band. Nice ballads and blues driven rockers were fairly typical of the band, but their lyrics had matured and their already impressive music talents had done the same. "When Pigs Fly", "For The Damned" and "Laughing With The Dead" stand out just as much as any of the group's hits from the previous two albums. In my opinion, there were even hints of the so called nu-metal sound that exists today. I'm not sure if Godsmack or Disturbed ever heard this album, but I'm sure this band and/or bands like it influenced the music we hear today. If you're a fan of metal, buy this album and see for yourself.
If you are reading this..........2004-01-19
then you must be a true 80's metal fan. This is a pretty obscure album and the last major label release for the Bulletboys. Too bad that interest in this music waned by the time this album came out, Za Za really rocks and shows a little diversity in the Bulletboys sound. It still has the head-banging lighter-lifting metal songs of their first two albums but they actually tried a few different sounds on here. The acoustic driven "Sing a Song" is probably the best song on here while the bluesy ballad "Mine" shows a little different side to the glam rockers. Most songs are rough and ready rockers and if you liked their self-titled debut or their second album "Freakshow" then you should give this one a go. I still pull my copy out and throw it in the cd player every now and then just to remember what good 'ol 80's metal sounds like. Recomended for fans of Van Halen, Ratt, Kix, Warrant, etc...

I have always loved the Nutcracker -- and the fact that my daughter has been in ballet for 12 years, we tend to buy a several different versions of the same thing. We bought the Ballet Classics several years ago, and it is one of the best "Nutcracker"s I've ever heard. My daughter, who is 16 now, listening to rap and hip-hop, also loves this version -- "borrowed" it from our collection and it was stolen. Now I am searching for the exact same thing to replace it. So, you see, it's worth buying *twice*! The musicality and skill of the performers gives the music a dreamy passion. The CD provides clear tones, no odd noises to interfer. I only wish I could give it more than 5 stars!

Number one.......2003-09-24
Great music! And the singer has a very deep and beautiful voice. I highly recommend this album.
Kin Za Za's graceful songwriting style will appeal to anyone.......2003-08-17
Kin Za Za's "Number One in Shambala" is an important album for anyone who's passionate about music and films. A splendidly listenable and watchable release proves that there is a lot more
to the obvious then meets the ear...IMMENSELY ENJOYABLE!
Recording industry take notice.......2003-08-07
Smooth and elegant guitar rhythms and silky vocals blended to give a perfect set of 12 songs. This is what the recording industry forgot that music should be. Powerful music from start to finish. No mishaps. No overhyped marketing to overcome suspect quality.
The incredible production is a supplement to the music, not a cover-up of deficiencies. Move over Enya, say hello to this new Canadian duo on the scene.
"The River" clearly deserves a spot at the top of the charts with its infectious beat.

Album Description
"2005's Best Noise Pop Discovery. Kids, here is the group you've been waiting for." -- SF WEEKLY
San Francisco-based supergroup Still Flyin' was assembled in late 2004 by Sean Rawls. What began as a lighthearted nod to good times soon became a juggernaut that no one in the band expected, and before long the group had become a San Francisco phenomenon. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the band counts members of Track Star, Aislers Set, Ladybug Transistor, Love Is All, Maserati, and Red Pony Clock amongst it's rotating collective. Za Cloud is the second EP in a thematic series that started with Time Wrinkle, and like the first it's filled with indie-pop and twee jams gone rocksteady.
