5 out of 5 stars The best ever version.......2002-06-07

The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13

My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09

For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

This is the way ,I think, Purcell should sound. No pomp and surcomstance but only great music.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THE MUSIC YOU EVER NEED!!.......2003-05-23

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

This disc of 30 English lute songs and solos by 10 composers features divine singing from countertenor Robin Blaze and exquisite lute playing from Elizabeth Kenny. The music covers the first century and a half of modern English history--from the artistic flowering, which followed political emancipation from Rome, to the Restoration of the monarchy after which the lute became obsolete (until its revival by bearded Romantics in the 20th century). Some of the tracks are a little labored. The opener, Robert Johnson's "Full Fathom Five" from Shakespeare's "The Tempest," almost grinds to a halt. "Where the Bee Sucks" from the same source is similarly leaden, and Purcell's lute solo on "Lilliburlero" expects no one to dance. On the other hand, the duo's measured approach perfectly suits Dowland's "Time Stands Still," and the same composer's most beautiful song, "In Darkness Let Me Dwell," features the singer's most expressive singing. Blaze's haunting tone is deathly cool. Besides those mentioned, the disc includes songs by Campion, Lawes, Danyel, Reggio, Banister, and Blow. Blaze lights up on Matthew Locke's air, "The Delights of the Bottle," which is the most eccentric track on the album. Of the six tracks by Henry Purcell, "'Tis Nature's Voice" is the most grippingly performed. Blaze moans so vividly that one almost does not know where to look. --Rick Jones

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Delights of the Countertenor.......2006-07-12

Robin Blaze has a very sweet voice that is somewhat smaller than that of other notables in his field. It is exactly this type of voice that lends itself well to the genre of intimate music represented on this CD. There is nothing harsh or grating about Blaze's interpretations. On the whole this is a highly listenable and pleasant compilation of songs. I recommend this disc to anyone looking to expand, or start, their library of English song.

5 out of 5 stars Treasures to be discovered.......2000-09-11

As much as I love Robin Blaze, I was a little reluctant to buy this CD, thinking: yet another disc of lute songs? - I already have a dozen. But as soon as I saw the track listing, I had no further doubts. The selection is wonderful. By combining the well known songs such as Dowland's In Darkness Let Me Dwell with the rarely performed songs by Robert Jones, Matthew Locke and John Banister, this disc is sure to satisfy both the connoisseur and the novice. Most of the songs are short - with one short melody following another, 70 minutes seems to fly by in a blink of an eye. Blaze's singing is splendid. His voice, with that inimitable woodwind quality and sweetness, is so good that it would sound good even singing drones, but there is more to it than just the beauty of tone. Blaze shows himself capable of a remarkable range of expression: from flamboyant (e.g., The Delights of the Bottle), to dramatic (e.g., 'Tis Nature's Voice or Why so pale), to lyrical (e.g., In Darkness Let Me Dwell or Can Doleful Notes), to stately (Be Welcome Then, Great Sir). In this regard, the selection here is more balanced that the selection on Daniel Taylor's Tears of the Muse, and the variety works to Blaze's advantage because, comparing the melancholy pieces alone, Taylor comes out a winner (in my opinion, of course). The most magical piece on this disc is Henry Purcell's By Beauteous Softness. "Magical" is the word. There is something about Blaze's singing of Purcell that captures the very essence of Purcell's style. In fact, the best three minutes of countertenor singing I've ever heard in my life was Blaze singing Purcell's Crown the Altar (no, it's not included here - I wish). In sum, this disc is a treasure. -- gggimpy@yahoo.com

            3 out of 5 stars Mismatching............2000-09-07

It is very important to balance between music and poet in English Lute Songs. And one more important thing is to make feelings based on language rather than based on music.

Blaze and Kenny are try to make expression of feelings more plentiful and vivid recitation of poet. But they fail in this point. Relationship between vocal and performer because combination of poet and music are required vocal's expression and impromptu and momentary variation of rhythm and tempo.

This performance don't have any technical problem externally. But, Blase and Kenny are making excessive expression of feeling and performers are going with rhythm and tempo but not following their expression of feeling.

But several solo lute performances are very well i think. For example, Henry Purcell's "Sefauchi's Farewell" is played by lute. This is usually performed by harpsicord, but in this album, they are making good performance with lute.

I would like to recommend Deller. Have you ever heard Dowland's "Happy" in "flow my tears" and Purcell's "touch" in "strike the viol"? He was excellent of many counterteners.
