    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars should have been bigger..........2007-06-30

their third and last album, listen to "Fantasy" which is a brilliant song, one of their best. Carl Dixon was a great singer, not a screamer but a real singer, closer to Coverdale than Halford. Steve Shelski was (is) above your average lead guitar player, and the rhythm section knew how to rock. famous producer max Norman did a very good job by producing this album, the sound is really amazing. a great album from a great canadian band, this is the business side of things that put an end to this band, not their music!

4 out of 5 stars Final Studio Album.......2006-11-28

Released in 1985, Friction was the third and final album from Canadian rockers Coney Hatch. The band had a great, Foreigner meets April Wine arena rock sound that should have resulted in larger success, but for whatever reason they never caught on. It's a shame, because the band's albums - Friction in particular - had all of the right elements to appeal to rock fans in the 80's.

Of their three albums, Friction was the most AOR sounding. This might have been a sign of the times, but the album has a slick, polished sound similar to what bands like Y&T, Autograph, and Foreigner were releasing at the time. It's catchy as hell, and an absolute treat for 80's AOR aficionados.

Two thumbs way up for this great rock album. It's just about guaranteed to have you nodding your head and singing along in the car by the second track.

NOTE: So far, Friction remains the only Coney Hatch album that has not been remastered. One can only hope that situation will be remedied soon.

    5 out of 5 stars THIS AIN'T LOVE.......2002-03-01

This ain't love, but it's awfully close. This is the third and, unfortunately, final album by Coney Hatch. It was a short fast run, but ultimately left me with songs I would remember and look for until Anthem Records released this on CD. The cuts that make this a great addition to a Rock collection are "State Line" and "She's Gone".

I know most of you won't buy a CD for 2 songs, but there is more than that here. Coney Hatch is one of those groups that has an excellent retrospect package (BEST OF THREE) and the other great songs made that disc. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the band those tunes are "Wrong Side of Town", "Fantasy", "Girl From Last Night's Dream", and my favorite "This Ain't Love". There is also "He's a Champion", a better-than-average song.

I hate saying this is the same old Coney Hatch, but in a sense it is. Again, it is radio friendly no-nonsense Rock-n-Roll. Listening to these discs again, it is hard to fathom why Coney Hatch didn't take the music world by storm. It's probably the curse of my liking them. I can only say this is one of many groups that shows the fickleness of radio and it's inability to bring great bands into every market. Of course, maybe it's the curse of living in a market, where program director's don't have their thumbs up their ---!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent rock & roll CD.......1999-10-08

Back in the early 80's I did a college radio show that focused on rock & roll, not heavy metal. We would have access to new music coming out and that's when I first heard this album...remember those?! I thought it was great!!! I must have marked every song on the album with 2 stars, meaning it was good enough to play the the show!

Get the CD ... you won't be disapointed!

HE BURNING SEASON began in late 2001, taking their name from the concept of their previous band's disaster. After facing copyright issues and member changes; THE BURNING SEASON started off on a clean slate with the drive to push the limits of their past endeavors. This Maryland based group set out to redefine the landscape of modern metallic hardcore. Blending melodic hooks with searing riffs and punishing breakdowns, THE BURNING SEASON became a force to be reckoned with as their debut album, The Haze Of Infatuation, hit the market. With wide appraise for their debut effort, THE BURNING SEASON shared the stage with some of metal's finest such as THE AGONY SCENE, AS I LAY DYING, HASTE THE DAY, and EVERGREEN TERRACE. As great fan reactions melded with their hard work and dedication, they knew it was time to get back to the studio to put out a sophomore album for their fans. Recording their second album for Eulogy Recordings, Onward Anthem is posed to be new and exciting ground for the band. With THE BURNING SEASON's new record, they will continue to usher in a new age of metallic hardcore.

4 out of 5 stars Thank You Frank.......2006-04-02

Back in 1988 I was turned on to Frank Marino from my sister's boyfriend.Though their romance may not have lasted, mine with Frank has. This was the first Frank album I'd ever heard.Back in those days I was a straight up thrash/metal head, but something about this guy just caught my attention.Needless to say I've been roaming the planet looking for anything I could find from Frank."It's begun to rain"..timeless and classical, since that day I've pretty much owned everything Frank has put out.He is truly a "Guitar God" in my books. One day this man will be put into the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame"..as the song states.Next to Steve Vai,he is truly a GOD!

      5 out of 5 stars V THE EMPEROR.......2006-01-17

THIS ALBUM WOULD FIT NICELY INTO THE IV THE EMPEROR SLEEVE-IT SOUNDS AS IF THIS WAS AN ELABORATION OF IV'S WONDERFUL GUITAR STYLINGS -A WONDERFUL BLENDIND OF SOUNDS AND AN IDICATION OF MORE OF THIS MAN'S PHENOMINAL TALENT.

      5 out of 5 stars A Marino must have!.......2003-10-31

An excellent album from the first to the last track. Aside from the great rockers for which Marino is so well known, check out "Look at Me" and "Lady" for insight into Marino's abilities on fronts way beyond the rock realm. The jazz runs are superb on these tracks. This is a must have, not only for Marino fans, but also for serious guitar players and listeners.

      5 out of 5 stars timeless.......2002-12-29

I've been a Frank Marino fan since 1975, and I recently listened through this "album" again. I first heard this work on vinyl, and have enjoyed my cassette until it's almost unplayable. This work really shows F.M.'s musical range, and is a punctuation point in his struggle with a record label that didn't know what to do with him. Highlights include Requiem..., In My Ways, Look At Me (perfect smooth jazz), and Try For Freedom. As a teenager eagrely lapping up every note, this seemed longer back then, but could easily go to market TODAY and compete with the current "heroes" like Vai, Satriani, Johnson, Morse, and Petrucci. I'm still turning people "on" to this amazing guitarist, and will continue to do so until all my aquaintances know his music.

5 out of 5 stars memerizing guitar work for all ears to hear.......2002-07-29

A album to be reckon with never before have i heard such music that just blew me away when i first heard this album from the first track to the last are song to treasure.

3 out of 5 stars CD sounds better than LP, but no contains no lyrics as in LP.......2005-05-10

Like all Max Webster CDs, the re-mastering makes the CD sound much better than the original LP version.

Problem is the LP contained lyrics where the CD does not.

There are no extra tracks either. CD is about 37 minutes long.

Other CD reissues have not been cheap in this manner.

I consider Million Vacations the closest to the material under the name Kim Mitchell. That is, the most pop oriented of Max Webster, but the non-commercialism is still there.

For the sound and the music, I give it a 5, but a 1 for the cheapness of not including the lyrics or extra tracks, thus a 3.

By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves, thus the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.

Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

      5 out of 5 stars Superior musicianship.......2004-08-08

I used to listen to this album all the time and just stumbled across it again. It brought back very pleasant memories. It is a superior album for a very important reason, the musicianship.
Max Webster had superior musical abilities and songs that properly showcased the talent. They are tight, entertaining, and interesting. Several of the songs have catchy riffs and teh recording techniques are excellent.
Max also tries to come up with meaningful lyrics. I'm not convinced they are the best, but at least they have a purpose and not just filler.
Except for the last two songs, this album is superior in several ways. If you give it half a chance you would enjoy it as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it for 20 plus years.......2004-07-05

I first heard this album when it was a new release 20 plus years ago. I have since bought it three or four times as I seem to loose it along with others or others have loved it as much and borrow and never returned.

Excellent album, summer time fun, RESEARCH AT BEACH RESORTS - has been a motto of mine for years - lyric from this album. As the summer sun comes in I always drift back to one of the greastest albums I have loved for decades. As previous comments have said - listen to the whole thing to understand and grasp the true album - kinda a Pink Floyd thing - it is great.

      3 out of 5 stars comesi, comesa...........2002-07-22

For many years, I dismissed this album right out, because on first listen, I couldn't understand most of it and liked very little of it. WELL, ...now that I've bought the album and have TAKEN the time to listen to it, my opinion has changed for the much better. I still don't like the second half of the album, with tunes like the title track and LET GO THE LINE, both of which appear on their compilation DIAMONDS, DIAMONDS and the last two tracks are still too strange for me.

BUT... the first half may be MAX WEBSTER at their best! The first five songs are all great! They're all very jazzy and progressive, with a GENTLE GIANT influence popping up in PARADISE SKIES and a slight KANSAS influence showing up in CHARMONIUM, which is my favorite song here. NIGHT FLIGHTS is a jazzy hard rocker and very catchy, while SUN VOICES shows off WEBSTER's mellow, dreamy side. This song is followed by the complex, but hard rocking and highly listenable instrumental MOON VOICES. Great stuff and maybe the most sophisticated songs MAX WEBSTER have ever written. Maybe the second half will catch on.

      5 out of 5 stars . . . a million reasons to buy this album . . ........2000-09-01

A Million Vacations isn't neither the best nor the least of the Max albums. I bought it first in 1979 not long after it's been released, and their excellent "Live Magnetic Air" was also one of the first contacts I had with this group. Sooner or later, I got ALL the LP's ; Max Webster was -and will always be- my favorite band (or one of my few 'desert island' choices...). From their first album (includes the famous 'Hangover') to the electrifying "Universal Juveniles", Max Webster never lacked in terms of originality, versatility, and all their albums contain some great rock & roll moments of their own. The myth would like you to believe A Million Vacations isn't "as good" as their previous efforts, or is somewhat "more commercial". In my websterian point of view, A M V sounds more "progressive" (most of the songs have a rather complex musical structure). Not a description of some 'average' commercial stuff... If a song is best described as 'commercial', this could be 'Let Go The Line', although it is a very good song per se. On A M V, Kim Mitchell and his bandmates have decided to go for something really different (in this band's case, there's not a 'cheap beat' replica from one album to the other !); the content is less 'hard rock', less 'underground' than "Mutiny Up My Sleeve" (the darkest album from M W, although -perhaps- the most exciting), and makes A M V a 'summer-ized' disc. It has a 'vacation feel' into it, and that produces a pleasing and judicious contrast with "Mutiny Up My Sleeve". Vocals, in particular, are even better (if anything) than their earlier material. A key element here is to understand that every disc from this band is different (still, retaining their signature), thus a piece in the history of this band. There's a million reasons to buy this album, as any Webster albums, but I'll let you discover the music for yourself. I do NOT think this album "lacks the passion" and is "watered down" as reported somewhere in these reviews. After all, there's NO New Age here, and should I add A Million Vacations does have plenty of these good rock & roll moments you can expect from a band as good and unique as Max Webster. ·

4 out of 5 stars Max Webster get a bit more jazzy and progressive........2005-11-09

While I don't think this album is as strong or as consistent as the first Max Webster album, I still think it is a very good album and that it has it's share of strong material.

I'm not too fond of the first two cuts..." High Class In Borrowed Shoes " is an upbeat rock and roll song with plenty of synthesizers and good jamming guitar, though it has never been one of my favorite M.W. songs. " Diamonds, Diamonds " is probably my least favorite song that Max has ever recorded...it's an odd, mellow piece that has a tropical Island feel to it. I don't like or understand this song at all.

Things start to pick up with the third track, the humorous progressive jazz rocker " Gravity ", which has some funny lines in it that are sung very comically by Kim Mitchell. Impressive lead guitar playing on it as well. " Words to Words " is an underrated power ballad. I don't usually like Max's more mellow songs, but I think this is a wonderful, melodic little piece, with some sweet lyrics and a great, emotional singing performance from Mitchell.

" America's Veins " is another fast, hard rocker with some rather weird, but funny lyrics and more jamming guitar. " Oh War! " is a mid tempo hard rocker (maybe the heaviest song here ) and has that evil " F " word in it. A good song, though oddly enough not one of my favorite tunes on the album. " On The Road " is a soft acoustic piece that has drummer Gary McCracken playing the brushes. A nice song, though I feel like it goes on a wee bit too long...like the road itself, I guess.

"Rain Child " is written and sug by keyboardist Terry Watkinson. I like this song quite a bit....the organ playing reminds me of the band Kansas. It's a bit progressive, it is ,and relaxing and tuneful at the same time. The album ends with the progressive hard rock tune " In Context Of The Moon ", which I think is a tad on the confusing and disjointed side. There are some good parts to this song...I particularly like the heavier parts...though they segue very well into each other. Still, it is not a boring piece.

The front and back cover shows the band dressed up in some slightly feminine and quite colorful clothing. Overall, I think this is a very good Max Webster album...not as good as the first M.W. album, but more consistent than the albums that would follow it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Max-Machine's very best, bu not the best.......2005-05-12

This album is what launched Max Webster across North America in the mid-seventies. here's my song by song review.

1-High Class in Borrowed Shoes starts the album off with a high-energy, straightforword rocker, 9/10

2-Diamonds,Diamonds is a very odd ballad that I unfortunetely could never quite get into. 5/10

3-Gravity is a heavy song that really gets the listener quite interested. 9/10

4-Words To Words is again another strangly placed ballad that I don't think fits in. 6/10

5- America's Veins is probrably the best song that max ever wrote, heavy, intense and catchy. 11/10

6-Oh War! is definatly the heaviest on the album, heavy and bluesy, definate Led Zeppelin influence. 10/10

7-On The Road is a nice acoustic song that lightens the mood a little bit. 7/10

8-Rain Child is the first song to feature keyboardist Terry Watkinson on vocals and it stands as a pretty stong cut off the album.

9-In Context Of The Moon is one of the best songs that Max has ever wrote because it's breathtaking, it's loud, it's difficult' it's groovy and it's just so friggin' impressive. It serves as one of the greatest finale's in the history of music (alongside Beyond the Moon from the Websters Mutiny Up My Sleeve album and When The Levee Breaks from Led Zeppelin's 4, and possibly Hard Lovin' Man from Deep Purple's In Rock)

All in all it's a good buy for anyone who wants to get into Max Webster or for anyone who enjoys prog/metal music

4 out of 5 stars Max Webster fan? Yeah, this is a Must-Have!.......2003-11-30

Being a huge fan of 1970s Canadian act Max Webster, I'm reluctant to advise fans of post-Webster act Kim Mitchell to get this album. This stuff is a little different then what Mitchell was doing in the 80s and still does. I think it's much better. Very different, very enjoyable Canadian rock from a by-gone time. The title song is a Max Webster 'classic' and a great straight ahead, kick-ass rock tune from the late 70s. I think this is the BEST album released by the Max's, though I'm sure a few would argue the first may be the best. To avoid argument, get both. Canada had few good rock acts in the 70s. We've caught up in the past few years, but back then, there were very few bands worth their lick....Max Webster was one of those bands. Get the first two albums and enjoy. The live album would be a nice addition to complete your Webster collection. This is a great, classic Canadian CD.
