You don't need a Wayback machine.......2001-12-05

Just get a CD like this one to get a broad brush review of the popular hits of the late 1500s. While I would have liked a few more recorder pieces, almost every cut was interesting in its own way. If you want just one early music CD with English songs, this is probably the one to get.

A Very Good Compilation of Elizabethan Music.......2001-09-27

"Elizabeth's Music" is a great cd to listen to if you are an enthusiast of ballads, the lute or old fashioned jigs. This cd really puts you in the alehouses, courts and courtyards of the Elizebethan age. The music is preformed well and the voices are very authentic and beautiful. The CD loses one star because most of the songs are on other Dorian-released CDs! I got the cd and found out most of the songs were the exact same ones on my "Shakespeare's Music" CD and other Dorian CDs. Ah well. All Elizabethan enthusiasts will enjoy this eclectic collection.

Light classics with historical charm.......2000-01-07

Really enjoyed this CD. Light and pleasant, without being too pretentious. Great background music for home or office.

Graceful music.......2005-09-27

The lute is a string instrument with a fretted neck and a deep, round back. In many ways, it is related to later similar instructments such as the guitar and banjo. It descends from a Middle Eastern instrument similar to the oud. The lute was one of the major musical instruments of the Middle Ages, and much music was composed for the lute, both as a stand-alone instrument as well as an accompaniment for singers.

This disc has some samples of both. Some songs are anonymous compositions, often derivative of much older folk tunes. Others are original compositions whose composers are known by name. Among these names are John Dowland, Thomas Morley, Alfonso Ferrabosco, Michael Cavendish, Thomas Campion, Nicholas Lanier, and Anthony Holborne, all of the 1500s/1600s. The music here involves both the 8-course lute and the 10-course lute (during the later Baroque time, lutes could have as many as 28 strings!).

The lute was eventually displaced by keyboard and other instruments, so in many ways its life is that of the music of the past. However, with recordings such as these, the lute lives again in vibrant form. Ronn McFarlane learned to play on a cheap steel-string guitar, but continued to study in a rather eclectic fashion, eventually studying at the Shenandoah Conservatory and the Peabody Conservatory prior to settling upon the lute as his primary instrument. In this recording, he is paired with Julianne Baird, a soprano with significant recording experience.

McFarlane and Baird emphasise the simplicity and lightness of the songs here; while some lute music and some folk tunes can be very elaborately arranged, here the performers strive for a more direct elegance. The particular period emphasised is Elizabethean; McFarlane and Baird sound as if they have come directly from the Queen's court directly.

This is a beautiful recording.

i should have read the description more clearly...this is partially vocal, not all instrumental. Nothimg wrong with the CD, but I only like instrumental.

Incredible! Stunning musicianship from beginning to end. For fans of Dowland, this recording is a gem. The blend of lute and voice on 'In darkness let me dwell' is downright haunting. This recording is an absolute pleasure. 5 stars just might be an understatement here...

Amazing.......2004-03-24

When I bought the CD I did not know what to expect. I had heard 70% of the bands on it (Danzig, Lacuna Coil, Therion, etc....). Overall, I was amazed by what I heard. This compilation represents bands who are not just loud and heavy, but also very skilled musicians. The people who make this music have a lot to say when their songs can sound this beautiful. For a good example listen to the Lacrimosa track.

Great Gothic Compilation.......2001-12-15

On first listen of this compilation a year ago, I was hooked, and have been since. I was already familiar with "Therein" and the mesmerizing "Aeode". Most of the other tracks pulled me in instantly, namely "only for the weak", "Stars" and "Walking in the air". In Flames' tune is insanely catchy, and Christina Scabbia and Tarja give angelic performances in their respective tracks. "In the Heat of the Night" is a nice cover with duelling female/clean male vocals, and Love Like Blood keep the Sisters of Mercy end of the spectrum alive on "Remember." Some of the other tunes are not as instantly accessible but prove perfect for those dark nights of the soul, examples being Pain's "Dark fields of Pain" and Saturnus' "Noir." Only skippable tracks are New World Orders awful clubmix and Lacrimosa's tune (but only because I don't know German). Take away the ill-suited growl vocals on Macbeth's "Forever..." and you would have a pleasing atmo-metal dirge. Overall, though, about 3/4 of this album totally kicks.

Best comp I've heard in a few months.......2001-08-07

Being an aficanado of bands like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, I purchased this CD on a whim. At first, I thought of this compilation as a spectrum of musical genius. At one end, I was enchanted with the beautiful ballad "Walking in the Air." On the other end, you have the songs "Therein" and "Only for the Weak," which throw me into a state of euphoria. But the rest of the album had me sitting there twiddling my thumbs wandering I was to do.

Well, I gave the album a few more turns in the CD player and to my surprise, I was hooked. The best songs on the album would have to be "Sympathy for the Devil," "Only for the Weak," Enter Vril Ye," "Therein," "Aoede" and "Walking in the Air." All the rest of the songs are alright. The only blemish would be "New World Order," which would be a killer song if it wasn't warped and left alone.

like the title says - beautiful in its darkness.......2007-05-31

excellent goth/darkwave/metal compilation - if you look at a full moon or a forest in winter and see yourself, then this is your kind of music.

I'd name the high points, but truthfully, that's most of the album - they could have left out the death metal band Hypocrisy at the end which seems kinda out of place here... the special version of "Sacred Divinity" by Agathodaimon is totally different from the album version, and is NOT to be missed.

Some people may find music like this depressing, but frankly, they're missing the point... and that's okay. It's not for everyone - and we're doing just fine without you.

Very beautiful, indeed.......2005-07-31

This is the second installment in Nuclear Blast's long-running gothic compilation series, Beauty in Darkness. It spans 17 tracks of darkwave, metal, and alternative classics that all manage to fit in quite nicely. Standout tracks for me include Love Like Blood's brooding cult rocker "Pale Sky", Theatre of Tragedy's melancholic "Black as the Devil Painteth", My Dying Bride's atmospheric dirge "For You", and Pyogenesis's "Blue Smiley's Plan", an exotic pop-punk number with a beautiful chrous. Other great tracks come from Sentenced, Dimmu Borgir, Lacrimosa and Crematory (who provide a stellar live performance of their hit "Shadows of Mine"). There are a few songs that strike me as static, or not completely well-rounded, but don't subtract from the overall experience. In conclusion, Beauty in Darkness Vol. 2 is an excellent addition for your gothic collection, and the included hard-to-find tracks only justify your reason to buy it.

Beautiful Darkness Indeed.......2001-03-13

The Beauty in Darkness video collection is the greatest investment I've ever made as far as music video goes. Of volumes 1-3, volume 2 here is my favorite. These bands make music that is catchy, stirring, and SINCERE, the capitalized word being one that much mainstream music knows nothing about. Most of these bands are European gothic rock, my favorite genre, though there are one or two songs on the punk side and one ethereal number. Though the BinD Cd and video collections won't likely be a commercial success here in the states, they are well worth checking into for fans of underground metal of a gothic bent. There are one or two songs on here I don't care for, and a few I'm indifferent to, but the others are some of my all time favorite bands/videos. These favorites are videos by Evereve, In Flames, Darkseed, Atrocity, Secret Discovery, My Dying Bride ("For You" is my favorite MDB song ever) and the ever-epic Therion. Also of note are videos by Sentenced and Lacrimosa. If you are a fan of these bands or this genre, you should check into the Beauty in Darkness video collection, you won't find all these artists collected anywhere else. A great buy indeed. Now all we need is for .......... to release the video for BinD vol. 4. Rock on!

Gothic-Doom-Death-orquestral-pop(!) compilation.......1998-07-01

In this compilations we can see some extremes in the Goth-Doom-Death-pop. There are excellent tracks by In Flames, Crematory, My Dying Bride, Therion, Ever Eve,Alastis and other and some track of suspicious taste such as Lacrimosa(or you love or you hate this band, I hate!),Pyogenesis(the strange Pop section of the CD),sentenced, and dreadful shadows, thanks god that some bands in the BIDII home video aren't here such as dreamside, and some techno stuff!

Decent compilation..........2004-02-18

There are no thoroughly impressive songs on here, but nothing that deserves to be in the wastebasket either. The best song is Cradle's "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids," which I had already heard on their Cruelty & The Beast album. The tracks by Godgory and Crematory are pretty good, the Liv Kristine track is totally out of place, and the tracks by My Dying Bride and Dismal Euphony, bands I'd heard many good things about, were thoroughly disappointing. Heck, someone compared Dismal Euphony to Tristania once - don't EVER blaspheme against the lords of gothic metal like that! The song by HIM is laughable; this band makes pop music and, like Liv Kristine, don't belong on a metal collection. The rest are just okay. Nothing to write home about.

Great CD.......2000-05-02

This CD is sad and evil. It has good bands on it, specially My Dying Bride, Cradle of Filth and HIM (wich in my personal opinion is the best of DOOM/GOTHIC). It's amazing!

A good goth/doom sampler........1999-12-05

For those of you wondering who is who in the world of goth/doom (or whatever it goes by today!) music. This sampler gives you a quick primer. Some of these songs are very good and others...not so good. I like the variety here, from the eerily haunting punishment of "Cradle of Filth" to the sirens wailing of "Dismal Euphony" this CD has it. The strangest track has to be by "Him". A retro 1980's glam-rock sound singing about his lovers "sweet 666". All in all, this is a great CD to pop in when you are feeling kind of evil. Light the candles and incense experience Beauty in Darkness.
