the neville brothers don't belong here. they have fake voices that were made by marketing people. pavarotti has a voice trained over the years with tremendous preparation and hours and hours of classical training and lessons. it's like putting gary matthews jr. on a hitting show with ted williams. a big joke. but everyone else is great.

Verry fun and risky but it worked.......2002-02-07

Pop stars with Opera singers, who would of thought. But it worls well. This CD is fun and has some wonderful proformances. Sting and Pav are very good together on Pania Angelicus. Sting is also good with Zucchero on Muoio Per TE. This CD sounds wonderful and is a must have for the fans of Pav, Sting, Kaas, May, Succhero, at all.

This is not what I expected. I only like "La donne mobile." My mom only liked "Caruso" and "Panis Angelicus." This is not like the second on or the one for Bosnia. Those rocked.

Fantastic album...the 1st in a wonderful series.......2000-12-14

This is the first cd in the Pavarotti and Friends series which benefits charities. The wonderful thing about them, is the mix of genres. And this one is no exception. Listen to Sting sing with Pavarotti on the beautiful 'Panis Angelicus', and 'La Donna e Mobile'. Who would have thought of pairing those two together. But it works with breathtaking magic. Just look at the list of artists on this disc and the songs performed. There really is something for every taste. From operatic songs to rock. I love this series, and highly recommend them to all music lovers.

"The Sentinel" - I Really Like This Album..........2007-06-20

Although I was familiar with composer Christophe Beck's work on the TV series Buffy, The Vampire Slayer (which was excellent), I didn't consider his orchestral score for Elektra to be one of his best scores, and I wondered what kind of orchestral score he'd come up with for The Sentinel.

Well, I can safely say that this score more than makes up for Elektra. It's 53 minutes of pulse-pounding music, which begins with the Main Title Theme, which I particularly liked. That sense of tension and suspense continues throughout the rest of the album, especially in the cues, "The Mall", "City Hall", "Garrison's Polygraph" (ever wonder what biting one's fingernails sounds like? you'll hear it in this cue) and "Assassin Down".

These cues reminded me of Jerry Goldsmith's score for U.S. Marchals, because although there are some electronics in the score for The Sentinel, Beck -- like Goldsmith -- wisely keeps them in the background, while allowing the orchestra to convey the suspenseful and tense mood of the film.

The score of The Sentinel is worth listening to, and I highly recommend it.

Fantastic soundtrack.......2006-10-11

This soundtrack from the movie "The Sentinel", is simply a bomb. The whole CD can match the excitement that I see in the movie. Every track is unique and tense. When I listen to this CD, I feel like I am into tense stages especially in track 1, 7, and 14. Overall, brilliant soundtrack.

oh how the wicked farleys knock my socks off! That Robbie Laxso is oh so sexy and I once saw him with a j robert crowley shirt and i also know his alter-ego bowling friend Cornelius. This CD is worth its weight in gold and not just because the city of Fitchburg Ma is mentioned and because Jrod Trank is in the cover Go out and buy this for I say so

I cannot believe nobody has reviewed "Sentinel and Enterprise" by The Wicked Farley's. I saw them at the Firefox lounge in Minneapolis, and they are fantastic live, if ear-piercing loud. Their intensity live is captured well on disc as well. This is a great record, a great band, and I cannot reccomend this more. If you like indie rock, this album is for you. Go and buy it, you will not be dissapointed.

Armageddon In Song.......2007-03-03

I have to laugh when I look at the amazon sales ranking of The Sentinel and think of all the utter garbage that outsells it! There is definitely a failure to promote at least partially at fault!
Though I have other works by Pallas, I was unaware of this obscure gem until I saw it in the box sets at a favorite Encinitas record store. Since I am a fan of the Artwork Collector's Series of prog albums issued by InsideOut Records, I grabbed this right away. When I got home, I eagerly put it in expecting something great and that's mostly what I got.
Apparently, The Sentinel was written as a concept album about the end of the world, kind of bringing the listener Armageddon in song. This was originally issued at a time when a nuclear holocaust was arguably more likely than it is today. The music here is mostly excellent, but it takes a good reading of the well-written lyrics in the handsome booklet that accompanies this disc to really appreciate the musical picture Pallas is painting.
The Sentinel has a much stronger prog flavor than some other of their CDs I own. If you haven't heard this CD yet, my best way of describing the music is to say it is somewhat evocative of Marillion.
My favorites here are: Shock Treatment, which is more rock than prog; Eastwest; Rise and Fall Pt 2; Heart Attack; and Ark of Infinity. The only song I really do not like is the corporate-rock sounding Arrive Alive. It sounds really out of place here.
If you missed out on The Sentinel when it was originally issued, here's your chance to get what is a very decent piece of work. I highly recommend that you get the Artwork Collector's Series box set. Its worth the measly extra couple of dollars.

Vaya trabajo musical, todo una pieza de colección, valorada muy poco fuera de Europa, sin embargo es una referencia obligada para la gente que gusta del Rock Progresivo. Este pieza es la base musical de PALLAS. Considerado como Neo-Progresivo, pero creo que la definición es lo de menos. Ritmos y sonidos bien mezclados, letras de batallas épicas, las cuales hacen cierta alusión a guerras verdaderas, el equilibrio vocal de Euan Lowson es una muestra del buen manejo de impostación voz-instrumento.

La lírica acústica de los teclados también es muy resaltada y pronunciada en la mayoría de las canciones.

Finalizo comentando que hay quien ha comparado a PALLAS con MARILLION y con IQ, pero....si quieres saberlo....

Album Description

Greg composed this compilation of songs over the summer and fall of 2001. The sun was hot and the air thick with moisture as he sat at the piano. Out of that came Fire Drake, a fiery, fast song full of joy at the summer weather and thunderstorms, and Avoi Dance, written for his wife Linda as she lounged in a hammock basking in the sun, thereby avoiding all the weeds in the garden. On the more tender side came songs such as I'll Remember You and Always. The piece Castle of Wonders is a song rich in visual textures. It travels through time, bringing the ruins of a castle to life with ladies dancing, torches blazing and knights riding out through the gates, their pennants snapping in the wind, before returning to the crumbling towers of the present.

Unique and Moving Music.......2004-10-26

Greg Maroney's "Sentinel" is a unique and moving album. The third track "I'll Remember You" really interests me because of its beautiful sweet melody combined with a very interesting left hand counterpoint harmony which features Maroney's virtuosic abilities. I am moved each time I hear "Always" because its melody reminds me of a soaring bird diving up and down, free, powerful and true... like a love that lasts a liftetime... always. "Fire Drake" is most energetic and exudes a wonderful triumphant spirit. I imagine sprites dancing wildly around a bonfire after a successful day harvesting berries in the forest. "Communion" is a piece that seems perfect for a spiritual procession. A walk along a beautiful path taking in and communing with nature in every step. "Birds on a Wire" absolutely charms me; listen and you will hear the birds talking with each other. And then they break into a sweet and melodious song. Maroney does SING through his instrument. My favorite track is the last one the album, "Giants Dance". This sweet waltz would win over any giant with half a heart and inspire him to spin and twirl. Greg has created another unique and moving album with "Sentinel", a treasure that will endure.

Mysterious Melodies with Medieval Memories.......2004-06-08

Greg Maroney plays each note with a sense of wonder and poetic interpretation. His music also reminds me of a line in a poem by John Milton: "Where more is meant than meets the ear."

In "Sentinel" he has captured a world of medieval mystery and protected it within notes of exquisite beauty. The track titles almost invite you to imagine a world of castles, crimson fire drakes soaring high above lush mountains, a petulant sky ready to burst into rain or even a sunny day where a maiden reads in a woods as the sun filters through fir trees.

There is a sense that this perfect world could shatter into a million imaginary fragments and that a dream of perfection could be lost. As Greg Maroney plays, he protects this fragile fantasy. You can drift into a place where peace is protected and you are safe in your daydreams. Even "Avoi Dance" reminds us of our desire to avoid real life and escape into a fantasy of richly textured notes.

I have rarely heard a piano played with such a deeply intuitive quality all while the music retains an element of fresh natural beauty. Sentinel is an excellent introduction to Greg Maroney and you may also want to look for Harmony Grove, Songs of the Water Rose and The Copper Hat.

"Sentinel" is Greg Maroney's third solo piano album to date, and what a beauty it is! The songs tell wordless stories about Greg's life, its events and surroundings, and the people in it. Warmly inviting, and always accessible, it is the kind of album that I dearly love - one where the music is complex enough that one can hear something new each time, and where the familiar strains grow closer to the heart with each listen. Trained in classical and jazz piano since the age of five, it sounds to me like Maroney is probably most "at home" sitting at the piano and letting musical magic happen. There are jazz elements in Maroney's music, but I would say that the influences on this CD are of a more classical nature with some of the freedom found in jazz. All of the tracks on this CD are really good, but I have a few favorites. I love "Castle of Wonders" with its swirling, mysterious opening bars, and then dancing rhythms and melody - there is always a sense of mystery, but also of joyful discovery. "Fire Drake" is another upbeat piece full of a dancing sense of elation and wonderful pianistics. Both of these pieces sound like great fun to play as well as to listen to! Most of the rest of the thirteen pieces are a bit slower and more subdued, describing a wide range of emotions and subjects. "Avalon" is a darkly gorgeous piece with lots of deep bass chords and mysterious drama. "Always" is more of a tender love song full of passion as well as gentleness. "Sentinel" is a really great album, and I highly recommend it.

Memorable and nice listening.......2002-06-06

How to describe Greg's music? It's easy to listen to, refreshing, melodic, and yet complex. Sentinel has many wonderful songs - energetic and compelling like "Firedrake"; romantic like "I'll Remember You" and simply pretty songs like "Linda's Song". Piano music you can listen to repeatedly without tiring of it - the songs become familiar friends.
One of my favorites is on the Water Rose CD. "Song for Jana" has the kind of memorable melody that belongs in a movie soundtrack.

Heated Passion!.......2002-05-22

From the mystery of Castle of Wonders, to the carefree attitude of Avoi Dance, I enjoyed each song's creative images. Feel the serenity while taking Communion or listen to the fluttering Birds on a Wire. Get up and dance with the lumbering Giants' Dance, and put Fire Drake on the repeat mode and feel the heated passion!

Perfect.......2006-01-05

I too am a collector of scores and soundtracks, and as the first reviewer mentioned, this is how a score should sound. I believe it should be exciting within its own right and be able to tell a story - and this one does!

I can't even remember when I got this CD, but sheer strength of the composition and execution will keep it constantly fresh.

I especially like the pan flute, didgeridoo and drums. I also wish the intro theme was longer, for it really sets the tone for the score and the show.

One of the best TV Soundtracks in my collection........2003-10-25

This CD blows me away.

I'm an avid collector of TV Soundtrack CDs - mention a TV show soundtrack and I probably have it! - and "The Sentinel" is one of the finest. Four months after getting it, I still put it on every couple of days. The CD has some very nice vocal tracks to start off, and a couple of short haunting gentler pieces dotted in various places, but where it really thrills is in the loud action suites. The pieces of music used when the show's hero goes into action (running, climbing, jumping, breaking through things, shooting bad guys, or beating them over-and-over with his fists) are breath-taking. These are some of loudest most energy-intense pieces of music I have ever heard.

In line with The Sentinel's jungle-based origin, the whole album has an underlying theme of repeditive drum beats that inevitably cunjures up the essence of that locale in the mind of the mind of the listener.

Tracks 9, 11 and 13 are particularly noteworthy. Each comprises a suite made up from music used in the episode it comes from. Some of the melodies in the episodes are very striking and stay with the viewer. Consequently, various parts of the suites leap out at the listerer and cause images from the TV stories to pop into the mind, e.g. the hero tracing radioactive material with his hands in the "Red Dust Suite".

About two-thirds of each suite comes from the climax of the episode, and what the listener gets is a relentless building in musical intensity until the track reaches fulfilment with the - brief - use of the main melody from the TV show theme.

This is one feature of the album that I love.

While it is a genuine pity that the package does not contain a long version of the main theme, it is wonderful that the Sentinel theme appears - briefly - in many of the long suites to such terrific effect. It is this - I believe - more than any other reason that has prevented me from becoming tired of the album. Not matter how many times I put it on, and press shuffle, I never cease to be thrilled by the sonic crescendo. With this kind of build-up, there is something truly majestic about the Sentinel melody.

A fantastic album. Together with Christopher Franke's Raven, this is the finest TV Soundtrack CD in my collection and I heartily recommend it to fans of the TV show and fans of rousing, exhilarating orchestral music.

The music of The Sentinel is a masterpiece of emotion that binded the show into the hearts of millions during it's UPN run. You should definetely pick this item up!

Great action music.......2000-11-29

This is a very good album that should have appeal beyond fans of the TV show. The three vocal tracks are well done, but I question lumping them all at the beginning of the CD. It might have been better to intermix them with the instrumental tracks. However, the only real disappointment is the title track itself. The producers missed the opportunity to score a longer version of the main theme. That provided is only 34 seconds, and is different than I expected, probably the scoring used in the first season. All in all, an excellent buy. Too bad the show is gone.
