Pure raw super r'n'r !.......2007-07-19

Pure rock'n'roll energy at high voltage, this is what Uncle Ted's delivers here. This album is rightly super famous, it is really a shot (a shot!!) of pure energy. Ted is unstoppable here, he is like one of those wild animal he loves to hunt. His riffs played through his precious Byrdland are of the highest caliber (and never a word has been so well chosen!) even to today's standards. This album is essential to understand where all that hair metal from the eighties came from (by the way each time I see Ted's with a guitar in the seventies I understand where John Sykes for example took a lot of his cool attitude and look from ... I love him too be sure). I guess this album has been incredibly popular in the seventies and the building riffs of these song from Ted's songbook are the roots of thousands of tunes and riffs from the hair guys (but even their wild looks and their sexist macho attitude). I can't choose a tune here even if "Stranglehold" really attacks you with such a strong riff that it's almost incredible and it blows me away each time I listen to it (and Ted didn't had the full shred distortion we had today, you can hear its EXTREMELY beautiful and absolutly original archtop guitar tone). "Cat Scratch Fever" is splendid and the full run from "Just what the doctor ordered" 'till the instrumental "Hybernation" may be considered some of the best hard rock ever played (hard rock not nu-metal kids). After the long and strechted out instrumental "Hybernation" comes the second full gas run of the album, from "Stormtroopin" to "Motor city Madhouse". You can't lose this thing for real, it's too much, too much. Exceptional "Wang Dang Sweet Pootang". I mean this Gonzo live it's even more fantastic than what I remembered. I had this vynil of Gonzo Live in my school days, but rediscovering this album nowadays something like 25 years later, makes it perfectly clear to me that Ted's music was not a small thing and that he was not a clown dressed like a caveman. He was and still is a natural born performer, an extremely talented guitarist and his music was (and still is) extremely good, despite his lyrics that some may call stupid but are simply funny r'n'r lyrics to me. I don't take them too seriously ... they're only funny R'n'R lyrics. What do you expect from a man in a caveman dress? Some Shakespeare? I can't do nothing but love Ted and this album and to envy the people that attended these concerts in the seventies. Hunt those who don't like this album (just joking guys!)! Long live Uncle's Ted!!! PS (the rock candy remastered edition makes justice of this hard rock masterpiece)

Skip this double disc and get the Re-Mastered version........2007-01-15

This double cd has a number of great performances, unfortunately the sound on the 2 disc set is wretched. In order to do the Great Gonzo justice, pick up the remasted version (on one Disc no less) from Rockcandy records. You will not be disapointed!

Double Live Gonzo is an all time classic Heavy Metal Masterpiece! The versions of Stormtroopin and Motor City Madhouse are incredible! The Guitar solo's are mind blowing!

TED'S FINEST HOUR.......2006-04-27

HOT DAMN, SWEET BAM-A-LAMB! I give this 4 stars only because it needs to be remastered. An otherwise, balls to the wall, screaming bloody murder, rock and roll show. Sr. Nugent is the man... the main man... the king of the forest. Don't let anyone tell you different. If you did, Ted might come to your house and knock your lights out.

Great "Uncle Ted"!!!!!!!.......2006-02-24

This is one of the greatest CD's of all time! However, it does need to be remastered. This is Ted at his best!! I have seen him a few times, and I have no idea where he gets his energy from. Maybe all the venison he eats.
A must have for anyone who likes great guitar licks and out-and-out ROCK.

The Elders get better and better..........2007-03-02

This is a fantastic CD. The Elders are different than The Pogues, or Flogging Molly, but have a style that fans of those great bands will enjoy. Standouts include Bad Irish Boy, Send a Prayer, Racing the Tide, Gonna Take a Miracle, and Saint Brendan Had a Boat. One of my missions for the next year or two is to travel to see The Elders, since it doesn't look like they'll be in California in the near future. Check out earlier CD's as well, you can't go wrong.

Fantastic New Release from The Elders.......2007-02-17

Racing the Tide, the newest release from The Elders, shows off all the immaculate musicianship, strong songwriting and story telling skills of this Kansas City based Celtic rock band. Formed in 1998 The Elders have been rocking Kansas City and Celtic festivals across the country for the last 7 years. County Wicklow native Ian Byrne fronts the band, lead singer, bohdran and battle drum, with Steve Phillips, guitar (formerly of The Rainmakers), Brent Hoad on fiddle, Norm Dahlor on bass, Tommy Sutherland - drums, and relative newcomer to the band, Joe Miquelon on keys.

Foot tapping, sing-along beckons as the Cd opens with Send a Prayer. The band are well known for telling "true stories" at their live shows, and the first track is followed by some of these true stories... Uncle Charlie, Story of a Fish and Bad Little Irish Boy (could this bad little irish boy be Ian we wonder?). The title track Racing the Tide is my favourite cut on this CD, wonderful harmonies. Brent Hoad's incredible lyrics are showcased in Dear God, St Brendan Had a Boat (another true story if legends are to be believed). The track Australia is a departure from the majority of the Elders tunes, putting one in mind of a 1920's speakeasy. You'll rock out with Gonna Take a Miracle, and Right with the World.

I strongly encourage you to buy this CD.... and see The Elders live if you ever get the chance - you won't be sorry.

The Elders are an excellent Celtic band. They have songs with energy and meaning along with fun. Ian is a great lead singer and the band has awesome harmony as well. Their songs DO stick in you head long after the last track. Well done...CHEERS!

Racing the Tide, by the Elders.......2007-02-12

A truly remarkable CD. The music is original and ranges from driving, up-tempo pieces that make the listener want to "crank it up" to a couple of tunes that slow things down just enough to help you get into the story that the song tells. Lyrics are creative and compelling. Some are just for fun, some tell important stories, and they stay in your head long after you turn the CD off. This is good stuff! D Schaal

impressive livealbum, watch the main guitarplayer!.......2007-02-15

Having released already a fine bunch of albums under the Mahogany Rush banner, after the 1980 closer "What's Next" Frank Marino opted for a solo-carriere under his own name with the aid of brother Vince on rythmguitar and backingvocals but also retaining the same other bandmusicians (Paul Harwood bass, Timm Biery drums) so in fact all is just the same. In 1978 he gave us a live-album simply called "Live" (is there a better title?) which boasted his songwriting, were it not for the fact that at least half of the songs are not by his hand!, and of course the 1979 release "Tales of the Unexpected" was partially live, with 4 excellent outings, this time his compositions solely.
With the 1992 "Double Live" (now a single CD disc) we saw a fine return to form and also the "Mahogany Rush" flag again. Hot on the heels of the truelly excellent "The Power of Rock and Roll" and "Juggernaut" - a twin album, considered by me, they are so close in superb songwriting plus singing and guitarplaying by Frank, backed by a decent rythmteam (whith a change of drummers) - Marino was performing live everywhere and recorded some performances in the US (Texas, California) from which "Double Live" is taken. On vinyl four sides are now reduced to one disc only, with the extension an extra song. Strange as it might be this has nothing showcased from "The Power ...." which is a pity given the quality of those songs. On the other hand, "Juggernaut" (the album) is here presented with "Midnight Highway (spelled as "Midnite Highway"), "Free" and closers "Strange Dreams" and of course the titletrack. Even remarkable is that the 1980 fourpiece band release "What's Next" is presented heartedly with "You Got Livin", the Doors cover "Roadhouse Blues" (given his own songwriting abilities and the wealth of material at hand not really necessary, besides his playing was always more reminiscent of Jimy Hendrix than Robbie Krieger, the only thing they had in common was the use of the same type of guitar), "Rock 'N'Roll Hall of Fame" and as bonus the fuzzdriven "Something's Coming Our Way". Most songs are extended versions with plenty of room for blistering guitarwork. In "Electric Reflections Revisited" and "Sky Symphony To A Little Town" Marino demonstrates his guitarplaying abilities and creates unreal sounds with just a Gibson SG and a few devices, you can even hear a churchorgan. All in all a classic live-album.

From Good To Great!!!.......2005-12-17

Wow I was blown away by the remaster job on this CD done by Frank himself. This disc always took a backseat to the classic "Live" CD from 78...and in it's original form it was OK.

Anyway now with the killer remastering job and bonus cut this is essential to any Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush fan. Some disc's say they're remastered but don't impress. This Double Live sounds so incredible now...it's like your listening to a new album...I waiting on my remasters of Full Circle & From The Hip...if they're done as well as this CD...I'll be very happy.

Frank rules and should be looked on as one of the top guitarist of all time...screw the critic's...and their Hendrix copycat label they've given Frank throughout his career. He might have started off at 16 playing like Jimi...but now he's got style and class all his own...as he plays jazz, funk, blues and metal ...with ease...and all with his own stamp.

Best Remaster job I have ever heard!.......2005-08-16

I have to say that it is almost like listening to this gem for the first time. Frank Marino's first live album is the one that everybody talks about and deservedly so, it is a monster.But "Double Live" has always flown under the radar screen. And it's a shame because people missed a great live album.
One difference between his first two live albums was the production, even though "Double Live" was loaded with great songs, the sound was not that good, it badly needed to be remastered. Well it has been and it is incredible how much better is sounds, I can not remember a better remaster job, and I am big on remasters.
If you like Frank Marino get this album, it is loaded with Marino's brand of explosive guitar playing

If you're interested in Celtic or Irish music these guys out Kansas will get your foot dancing, and beyond! The other good CD from them is American Wake. Great music to get you "wild and crazy" some night because they don't slow down with many of their songs. Not old Celtic music, but there are enough of a taste to please any purist. Give it a try!

Michael Hedges hardly needed to prove that he was an astonishing performer in person as well as in the studio, but Live on the Double Planet does the job nonetheless. Hedges features a number of songs from his brilliant Breakfast in the Fields release, including that album's title track and the acrobatic "Silent Anticipation." He throws a few vocal numbers into the mix as well, including standard-issue covers like Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," the Beatles' "Come Together," and one from far out in left field, Sheila E's (courtesy of Prince) "A Love Bizarre." The album shows off Hedges's sense of humor as well, as he interpolates a vocal riff from the Rolling Stones' "Miss You" into "The Funky Avocado." --Daniel Durchholz

A TRAILBLAZING GUITARIST.......2006-09-04

This is a wonderful cd but just hearing him does not fully depict how amazing of an artist he was.

If you are here, then you must be a guitar nut. Go all the way and get the dvd "WIndham Hill Live" where Hedges plays 3 or 4 songs.

He is not only phenomenal but also you can see the physicality of his playing. It puts his music in a totally different light! That dvd is the absolutely best work by this tremendous musical visionary.

bizzare and beautiful.......2006-02-10

this being the only Micheal Hedges album that i own and the only one that i have heard, i cannot comment in much detail about how this compares to his other recordings; but Live On The Double Planet is an extraordinary listen. full of inventive and creative playing that is beautiful and mind-boggling. the cover songs are amazing and really break out of the mold of the original...some are almost unrecognizeable until the vocals begin. the quiet pieces are the most effective compositions on here... the mood is very reflective and the beauty in his playing is astonishing.

A watershed.......2004-11-23

Unaware of how into the genre I had become, a friend of mine, one day, told me that if I combined the words new and age it would be read "newage." That, he went on to say would rhyme with sewage, a word perhaps best describing the former. I laughed at the little quip. But in the back of my mind I tried to search for an example of genius in the genre which might turn the tide in his thinking should it come up again. My conclusion was Michael Hedges and specifically this album. "Live on the Double Planet" is a snapshot of the full range Hedges' genius.

An authentic original. Sadly missed........2003-11-26

You ever had that feeling after deciding to be adventurous and plunking down $17, that you wished you'd played it safer? I had this feeling with this CD--for a day or two at most. It grew on me like few CDs have, until it became THE CD of the summer in which I bought it, and one of my very favorites of all time. It's original without being self-indulgent, technically astounding without losing the music, full of different moods, a great live ambience, and even humor. I adore it. I missed hearing Michael Hedges in person, and now I'll never get the chance (it was one black morning indeed when I heard he'd died). Don't you miss this CD.

Accurate for the Era.......2003-09-03

I was fortunate to see many of Michael's shows around the time this was recorded and also got to sit down a few times and talk with him about what he was trying to accomplish with the live recordings. His previous studio album (Watching My Life Go By) had been the first to include vocals, which had not overly impressed the bosses at Windham Hill. So they sent him on the road to do some live recordings, hopeing it would be a learning experience that would eventually yield better studio vocal performances.

For those of you that didn't listen to Michael at the time, many fans seriously disliked Watching My Life Go By, much in the way ardent Dylan fans revolted when he went electric at Newport. Hedges fans just wanted to hear Michael play his Savage Myth Guitar and keep the vocal parts trimmed down to the introductions. But Michael had a vision for his future and a big part of it included singing to compliment his Heavy Mental approach.

I guess I wasn't the typical Hedges fan - I enjoyed his singing, mostly because of the spirit of joy that he experienced while singing. Some of the songs on this set are not my favorites, but they were staples for his concerts in this era. To me, this disc is like sitting through the first half of one of Michael's shows, complete with the crowd energy he was capable of generating with ease.

Also included here are two cover tunes (Love Bizarre and Come together). His live shows often included three or so cover tunes such as the above or possibly Pinball Wizard, Emminence Front, Let's Get It Up, She Drives Me Crazy or Sofa, among others. I always got a kick out of hearing him cover tunes - I mean, think about how many solo acoustic acts have successfully covered AC/DC, Prince, the Who and Frank Zappa? But this just goes to show how versitile and gifted Michael was. I'm so happy to have had (and to have taken) the opportunity to see so many of his shows early in his career. His later tours were also excellent, but these were before the loss of innocence, while he was very hungry for success. That hunger also meant that the negative feedback he got about his vocals was difficult for him to take. But rather than receeding into a shell and reverting back to all-acoustic material, he continued to sing. I believe that this was the right decision. Singing while playing live gave excellent counterpoint to his instrumental works and, in his own words: "Gave me a few minutes to relax, then to focus more intensely on the instrumentals".

Sevendust's Acoustic Live Album........2007-05-13

This album is fantastic, I have never heard Sevendust perform these songs acousticly, it brings a different feel to the songs. Also, I love the fact that this album is a Limited edition, as it comes with official tour photos and a pick, as well as a dvd. I truly love this band and this album proves that Sevendust can perform live extremely well and the musicianship of each band member is of a high quality. Thanks Sevendust!

I got this when it came out, and it never stops delivering. Raw emotion, talent and sound. It is more about the true song structure, performance and lyrics, instead of massive sonic assualt.If you really like this band, then take the time to get this and watch it.
And turn it up loud!

Interesting change-up, A Sevendust fans Item, but may alienate the rock crowd.......2006-08-10

This is an interesting set put out by Sevendust. This was an excellent job at packaging (cd pick, post cards, DVD/Cd) and truely a fans pack. It was interesting to here sevendust as a stripped down version of itself, but not bad. This may have stemmed from the success of Angel's son, but also was a way for the band to showcase not only being a loud, hard pounding rock band, but also a great songwriting band, allowing the melody and vocals stand out and take shape without the loudness. Godsmack did a similar thing around the same time. I must say it took me a few time to adjust to tis album, but I do enjoy it now. But, as a warning for the person expecting to hear the Rock they expect from Sevendust, this will not be your collection. I would recommend the Greatest Hits Cd that came out Last year if you wan the rock versions. I really with they would come out with a regular Live CD, I have seen them live 3 times, and they are awesome, and it would be great to have that captured on CD.

Only if you're a true 7D follower and enjoy acoustic music.......2006-03-02

I love it. I enjoy many styles of rock/metal/alt. what-have you. This package comes with a full length cd (live concert). It also comes with the same material on dvd. Really rocks if you have a surround sound system. Bottom line here is if you don't like acoustic music it's not for you. Definetly check out there new studio album "NEXT". There new album and "SEASONS" are two of my favorites from them, although i can't really pick just one. They all have that special something about them.

Deserves a better re-issue.......2007-07-17

Close as I can tell, the two omitted songs for space were chosen because they never did end up on a studio album; they're introduced as being new material, but didn't show up when Lightning Strikes Twice came out. Combine that with the fact that the Southern Rock era was basically over when this came out, and you get a crappy CD reissue. It must still sell well enough for Epic since it's still in print, though. So how about remastering it, putting the missing songs on and giving us some alternate tracks? One More From The Road has been reissued this way what, 3 times now on CD? Plus bonus tracks from those sessions on other compilations. Obviously it should sell enough to make some money with it. --- This isn't too hard to find on vinyl - the missing songs are good, worth the trouble if you're a fan. At least they stay true to form, unlike bands who went to that synth-pop kind of sound blend (Doc Holliday - Modern Medicine, The Outlaws - Soldiers Of Fortune, or Van-Zant's self-titled Geffen flop).

I can't count the number of speakers that I have blown through the years of listening to this album. It's just that good, you can't listen to it at a low volume. Just listening to the crowd explode during Freebird will give you goosebumps. Although Skynyrd will always be known for Freebird, Molly Hatchet's version will make you slam the gas pedal even further through your floorboard! Great Live album from start to finish, and great price too!

Molly Hatchet recieved MUCHO grief for releasing Freebird on this album.
Riff West(bassist) was a guest speaker/consultant at a recording arts institute I attended and said this album was basically blackballed by the industry and fans alike;sales were dismal at best.This release was an embarassing moment for the good 'ol boys. Aside from that controversial point, the album is a real southern rocker. Anything with singer Danny Joe Brown is good stuff! An excellent addition to your Hatchet collection.

As good as Sknyrd's One More From The Road!!.......2007-03-21

This is the best live CD from the 1980's--period. Molly Hatchet's popularity may have been waning by the mid 80's, but they were certainly going down fighting, judging from the intense performances on this CD--amazing! One great song and performance after another. The Freebird cover was awesome--Danny Joe Brown sang it perfectly! Ronnie would be proud (he was planning on producing Molly Hatchet before the Skynyrd plane crash occurred)! The guitarists are on fire throughout! Boogie No More is incredible!

The sound quality (EQ'ing, specifically) is great on some songs, OK on others, and lousy on one or two. Apparently it's tough to capture a live CD from analog tapes soundwise, because Skynyrd's One More From The Road was spotty with the EQing as well. But the quality of the performances completely cancels out the weaknesses in the sound, as far as I'm concerned.

This CD is a MUST HAVE for any guitar-rock enthusiast, and especially for any Southern Rock fan!

a terrific compilation for beginners.......2006-02-07

I agree with P. Grupe-for classical music lovers, it is a let down to listen to cut tracks of well-performed classical greats, like Chopin's 1st piano concerto in this collection. Nonetheless, this is a terrific compilation for people beginning to get interested in classical music. This compilation is an eclectic mix of the familiar (Beethoven's moonlight sonata, Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini variation no. 18, Myer's Cavatina, Barber's "Adagio for Strings, etc.), the contemporary (Michael Nyman's The Promise, Horner's My Heart Will Go On), and the truly moving (Bach's Double Violin Concerto, Bruch's Violin Concerto, Schubert's String Quintet in C)-relatively obscure pieces usually left out in less inspired and mediocre classical music compilations. It is gratifying to see that opera music has not been left out. Get this cd if only for the Maria Callas tracks, Lucia Popp's performance of Strauss' Beim Schlafengehen, and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's Addio del passato.

"Classical heartbreakers" broke my heart.......2004-06-27

I am an avid listener of classical music, and I purchased this CD expecting to get some of the best classical music ever composed. I guess I expected a bit much though. Although the recording is filled with high quality performances of fantastic pieces, I was disappointed to find that only about half of the pieces are contained in their entirety on this 2-disc set. Songs such as Rhapsody in Blue and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata were not recorded in full for this album, which caught me off guard and bothered me quite a bit.

Anybody who is unfamiliar with classical music will appreciate this album. Since it features some of the most moving classical pieces ever written, it is sure to entrance listeners. And by not placing entire 10-minute pieces on the CDs, it will not run on and bore those unaccustomed to the length of most classical music. However, if you are already well-versed in classical music and can listen to entire symphonies with ease, I would advise against buying this album. I now feel a desire to go out again and find the full versions of some of these pieces, since I feel I was cheated by only getting introductions or short movements on most of the album. Guess I should have paid a little more attention to what I was buying.

A Fantastic Compilation.......2004-05-01

Most of the musical pieces in this compilation are from versions as they appear in various movies. This is Classical music from classic movies such as: Somewhere in Time, Schindler's List, English Patient, The Piano, Platoon, et al. But make no mistake; the music is what's really worth mentioning here.

The title says it all. It claims to have "the most moving Classical music of all time," and they certainly have a case, as it is chock full of the kind of emotional pieces that can easily bring you to tears. This double CD compilation with 37 passionately beautiful pieces is a steal at $16.99.

If you've ever recorded your favorite songs on to tape, or burned them on to a CD, you'll see that this compilation is exactly what EMI Records has done. It is like a greatest hits, volume 1, of poignant Classical music. Almost all of the musical pieces are classic favorites, though there are a few contemporary ones also.

I found the music on this CD powerful and moving as advertised, and I think that Classical music fans should truly enjoy it. It is well worth the price it's being sold for, and I highly recommend it.

Splendid Brahms Symphony Cycle from Haitink, London Symphony Orchestra.......2006-05-12

The London Symphony Orchestra's LSO Live label finally offers as a box set acclaimed conductor Bernard Haitink's latest - and third - Brahms symphony cycle (The other two - which are still available - were recorded by Philips with Haitink conducting the Royal Concertgebouw and Boston Symphony orchestras in the 1970s and early 1990s.). Those interested in a fine Brahms symphony cycle by one of our greatest conductors will not be disappointed with this box set, which compiles the individual LSO Live CDs released over the past few years (These were recorded at live concert performances of Haitink conducting the London Symphony Orchestra primarily back in 2003 and 2004.).

Highlights include Haitink's spellbinding interpretations of the four Brahms symphonies and a brilliant performance by concertmaster Gordan Nikolitch and principal cellist Timothy Hugh of the Brahms Double Concerto. The London Symphony Orchestra's performances are absolutely impeccable, rivalling those from preeminent Dutch, German and Austrian orchestras.

Haitink offers a compelling interpretation of Brahms' 1st Symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra in excellent form, which ranks as among the best performed and recorded I have heard. His latest interpretation is one which seems a bit less restrained than his earlier versions, but still replete with strict adherence to Brahms' tempi. His latest interpretation is, in some respects, more exciting than his earlier Philips recordings, emphasizing the rich sonorities and complex architecture of Brahms' score.

Without question Haitink's LSO Live recording is the best live recording of the Brahms 2nd Symphony I have heard, easily eclipsing Kurt Masur's acclaimed account with the New York Philharmonic recorded nearly a decade ago by Teldec. It is also Haitink's finest recording of this work, which he has recorded previously with both the Royal Concertgebouw and Boston Symphony orchestras. Haitink does a wonderful job emphasizing the textural richness of Brahms' score, while keeping the orchestra playing well at a very brisk tempo. However, the real treasure on this recording is the excellent performance of the Double Concerto by the London Symphony's Concertmaster and Principal Cellist which opens this CD. Theirs is a vibrant, rhapsodic performance which compares quite well - indeed I think may be better - than the recent Deutsche Grammophon recording featuring violinist Gil Shaham with Claudio Abbado conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Once again the orchestra plays with much intensity and warmth, led ably by Haitink.

Bernard Haitink's LSO Live CD of the Brahms Serenade Number 2 and the 3rd Symphony, is recorded from concerts he conducted in 2002 (serenade) and 2003 (symphony). Brahms' Serenade Number 2 could be regarded as an early precursor to his symphonies, since it is a five-movement work. Haitink leads the London Symphony Orchestra in yet another excellent performance, noted for warm, rhapsodic playing from the string section. However, the best performance on this CD is that of Brahms' Third Symphony. This piece itself is a bit unusual for a 19th Century symphony, in the form of Allegro Andante Poco Allegretto Allegro. In its overall tone, the work itself is a bit "darker" than the Second Symphony, which many have regarded as Brahms' "Pastoral" symphony. Haitink excels in emphasizing the more melancholy aspects of the work, leading the London Symphony Orchestra in the best-conducted and recorded version of this symphony that I've heard so far, with the possible exception of Harnoncourt's Teldec recording with him conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Haitink's latest recording seems a bit darker than Masur's New York Philharmonic Orchestra recording from Teldec, and perhaps, Harnoncourt's as well.

Haitink has conducted the London Symphony in an unusually warm, vibrant performance of the Brahms 4th Symphony, which is replete with excellent solo performances from the french horns, woodwinds and strings. I was especially pleased with Haitink's dignified, but still brooding, interpretation of the 4th movement, which comes across as a musical interlude between darkness and light. I personally regard this recording of the Brahms 4th symphony as the best currently available, in a crowded pack that includes distinguished recordings from the likes of Claudio Abbado, Herbert Blomstedt, Carlos Kleiber, Kurt Masur, and Kurt Sanderling.

Fans of Haitink's critically acclaimed 1970s Brahms symphony cycle may miss the ambient warmth of the Concertgebouw's main concert hall in this Brahms symphony cycle, but I will contend that these new recordings sound more vivid than the earlier Philips recordings. LSO Live is currently releasing Haitink's second Beethoven symphony cycle from live performances he conducted last year; I am eagerly awaiting these, suspecting that they will be regarded as among the finest Beethoven symphony recordings issued in the last few years. Later this year he will be visiting New York City, leading the London Symphony Orchestra in a Beethoven symphony cycle at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. Not only do I look forward to this visit, but also to Haitink's future performances at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium as Principal Conductor of the venerable Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Most live blues recordings have a feeling of intimacy, as if the concerts took place in some out-of-the-way venue for an audience who not only know all the lyrics, but know the performers personally as well. Live Alive, in contrast, feels like a large-scale rock concert, an epic production full of grand gestures. But really, nothing suited Stevie Ray Vaughan's style better; everything, from the overall sound to the solos, feels big. The roar of the audience, especially for favorites like "Pride and Joy," "Cold Shot," and "Texas Flood," is huge but distant, an arena sound. Overall, Live Alive leaves the impression of a series of stellar moments caught on tape, with an intensity rarely captured in the recording studio. --Genevieve Williams

Live Alive Minus One.......2006-11-14

This is an excellant SRV album. I had to buy several copies in cassette version because I played it so much I kept stretching it out! The only problem I have with the CD version is that the "powers that be" eliminated the "Life Without You" version that appears on the cassette. This is inexcusable, in my opinion, and I can only assume it happened because of pressure to be "politically correct"....Stevie makes very direct references to South Africa and Apartheid. Stevie "preaches" in the middle of the song and gives one of the all-time classic lines...."I may be White, but I ain't stupid!" I would really, really, REALLY like the studio to reconsider and re-release this album on CD in its original form. In any event, this is a "must have" CD for any serious SRV fan.

really good. good as any live album........2005-11-13

this is a really good live album. some of the songs he sings are first timers for him like Superstition or I'm Leaving You (Commit a Crime). but all and all, a really great album.

Not His Best.......2005-07-12

Stevie's contract mandated that he produce another album. He was so strung out on drugs at the time that he was unable to produce new material. A live album was all he was able to come up with. The available material (mostly the Montreaux performances) evidently didn't meet the highest standards of quality so a lot of overdubbing was done. Stevie's drug induced monologue at the end of Life Without You was an embarrassment to many of his friends and colleagues.

BUT IT'S STILL STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN AND THEREFORE FANTASTIC!!!!! The CD still rocks. It still has some great guitar work. As far as I'm concerned it's still a good piece of work. This was the first SRV tape I got, and I was not disappointed. SRV was a great guitarist. Period. This CD is also great.

But his other stuff is much better.

The late Stevie Ray Vaughan rocked on stage. His rendition of Howlin' Wolf's "Commit A Crime" may lack the raw punch of Wolf's original, but that's a minor complaint...most of this album is simply excellent, filled with gems from Vaughan's first three albums.

Stevie Ray's muscular and versatile guitar playing is sublime, with more grit than most of his studio orginals. His vocals are good, too, and the song list is magnificent, featuring the rare, non-LP track "Willie the Wimp" about the bizarre 1984 funeral of a Chicago "wiseguy".

Other highlights include Vaughan's best song, the superbly groovy "Pride And Joy", as well as "Look At Little Sister", "Cold Shot", "Love Struck Baby" and the slow blues "Texas Flood" and "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love", but there are really no weak songs, and this album should appeal to fans of both blues and rock music.
The sound is good, although not always crystal clear, and the band is excellent. Several songs actually sound better in this live setting than on the original studio albums, partly because of the blistering blues-rock arrangements which include keyboards (piano and organ).

Apparently some people feel that Vaughan's playing wasn't up to his usual standards when this album was recorded, that he must have been having a bad night or something. I've heard a lot of live SRV, and I can't make any sense of that claim, especially since "Live Alive" wasn't recorded during just one show, but actually incorporates cuts from different concerts in both 1985 and 1986. He must have been having some bad years, then, and this myopic claim sounds particularly absurd when it is brought forward by people who then go on to praise Stevie's "Live At Montreux" album. Several of these performances are from, yes, you guessed it, the very same 1985 Montreux performance.

Contrary to what some people have apparently heard and chosen to believe, this is a very enjoyable, soulful live album, and it is highly recommendable to anyone with an interest in Stevie Ray Vaughan, or contemporary blues and blues-rock in general.

What a loss. SRV reached superstar status and then like other superstars was cut down in his prime. I read other reviews about this release but I personally love this recording and if you have enough money I suggest you also buy the box set which has some live tracks as well and pick up a vhs/dvd of Stevie playing live. His rendition of voodoo child will drop your jaw.
