4 out of 5 stars Correction.......2004-10-14

Just a tidbit of info.....

In regards to the reviewer who swears this is not the follow-up to "Hair of The Dog"-believe me, it IS the follow-up! I owned this on cassette tape way back-the release date (if you check closely) is 1976. "Hair of The Dog" was released in 1975.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Nazareth Album.......2003-10-18

CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ROCK & ROLL is a great follow-up to HAIR OF THE DOG. It's not quite on the same level, but it's a wonderful album in its own right. The best track is "Lift The Lid", but there are other good songs here, too. If you loved HAIR OF THE DOG or GREATEST HITS, you'll really like this one, too.

5 out of 5 stars THE Album.......2002-06-20

It's impossible to say which is Nazareth's best release - they're all so good - but Close Enough for Rock and Roll has a special place for me because it's THE album that got me into this truly great band. Not as heavy as their best seller Hair of the Dog, it still packs an intensity that is painfully absent from so much rock music.

If you listen to the seconds long samples of music offered here you will probably hear something akin to the standard blues influenced hard rock of the 70's, which is how Nazareth is often characterized. Listening to the whole thing from beginning to end will give you a different impression. You will hear an acoustic guitar solo (Vicki), a unique reggae influenced number (Carry Out Feelings)and a sort of mini rock opera (Telegram ,which is sort of a strange one) This variety is all unified by a consistent style - yes, I suppose it's fair to call it a blues influenced 70's hard rock thing - and made outstanding by great musicianship, meaningful and sincere lyrics and a powerful sound, both on the emotional and physical levels. Manny Charlton is an incredible guitarist, but never shows off. Lilke the rest of the band, what he plays is always in service to the song, and all the instruments come together to form Nazareth's own chemistry. But still, his leads are mind blowing, and he accompanies himself on rhythm guitar as well or better than any of the other people the band has hired for this position over the years.

After listening to Vancouver Shakedown you would think that these guys hated the place, but in fact they loved the city so much they actually lived there for a while. With romantic themes being so over-examined in rock, it's surprising that what Nazareth has to say about the subject in such songs as Your the Violin comes across so well, and anyone with half an awareness of what goes on in life should be able to relate to Lift the Lid. Overall, every song has something important to say and says it well.

Like all their albums, Close Enough for Rock and Roll has a subtlety that gradually works it's way into your consciousness after repeat listenings. And repeat listenings are what it's all about for me. I must have heard this one a thousand times and I still can't get enough of it. That's the best proof available of a disc worth owning.

3 out of 5 stars Guitars Are Close Enuf For Rock 'n' Roll !.......2001-05-27

The Opening tune "Telegram" is worth the price of the entire CD! After the huge success of Hair Of The Dog & Greatest Hits, Nazareth was able to prove that they could still deliver.

This was one of the last albums from the bands "Classic" period of the mid 70's. The CD has a few hits and a few misses. "Vancouver Shakedown" is a tribute to one of Nazareth's strongest markets and the opening riff was later recycled into "Holiday" their last radio hit in 1980.

"Carry Out Feelings" was an attempt to rekindle the ballad market that they fired up with "Love Hurts" a few years earlier and is a good tune. "Born Under The Wrong Sign" & "Loretta" are funky but one tires of them very quickly. Alas, their next album "Play 'n' The Game" continued on in this poor fashion and the band did not return to form until the fantastic "Expect No Mercy"

"Lift The Lid" and "Viloin" show off a lot of Manny's suberb guitar work. The bonus tracks are radio edits of the lighter material and the single "Holy Roller" which is also available on some of the greatest hits packages.

Again, "Telegram" may be the best song the band ever made, but casual fans should find a greatest hits package that includes this song. Only hard core fans need to be exposed to the rest of the tunes.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars AN underrated classic.......2003-09-15

This is one of the all time classic albums of the mid 70's, but unfortunately, most people don't know it. Usually, when you saw the name Nazareth, most people think of the album that immediately preceded this one, Hair Of The Dog. That album had their big US hit, a cheesy retread of an old Everly Bros. chestnut called Love Hurts.

But it's on Close Enough..., that the band truly comes across the tough, hard rockin' band from Scotland that they are. The album opens with the stunning 8 minute composition Telegram, which is sort of a total encapsulation of life on the road, with the endless series of one nighters, early wake up calls, endless airline flights, and press conferences. It's also the track that the album title comes from ("Check guitars before you go/Close enough for rock n roll"). Manny Charlton's guitar playing on his track is amazing, particularly during the instrumental bridge following the So You Wanna Be A Rock N Roll Star quote.

Other stand out tracks on this album include the beautiful instrumental Vicki, Home Sick Again, Vancouver Shakedown, Born Under The Wrong Sign, Lift The Lid, and You're The Violin.

The only loser track on the album is Carry Out Feelings, which sounds like they were trying to follow up Love Hurts with another cheesy pop/rock song that sounds like it could have just easily been sung by any of the country/pop singers who popular in the US at the time. This one song is the only reason I give the record a four star rating instead of five.

Overall, though, this is a great album that every hard rock fan should own. The bonus tracks are nice to have, though the only one that's really essential is their cover of the old Tomorrow hit My White Bicycle (for those who don't know, Tomorrow were a late 60's psych band in England, who are most famous today for that one song, and also because future Yes/Asia/GTR guitarist Steve Howe played with them). In fact, I'd rather they had left Carry Out Feelings in the can and put My White Bicycle in it's place.

Anyway you look at it, this is an album worth owning!!!!!
