Recently I "discovered" the Belgian band Siglo XX. To be exact, I just discovered them this year. This album, however, was released way back in 1990. Hmmmmm--I wonder what took me so long to discover them?

First, let me say that there is indeed another band out there by the same name. The "other" Siglo XX is most likely a Latin American band since all of their songs appear to be sung in Spanish only. This Siglo XX hails from Belgium and, as you might expect, sounds nothing like the other one.

So . . . what is the sound of this band? Well, I've often seen them categorized under the moniker of "coldwave." Truthfully, their older material did indeed sound quite a lot like Poesie Noire, another Belgian coldwave band. The problem is, "Under a Purple Sky" was the one and only album ever released in the U.S. and Canada (WaxTrax) and by then their sound was obviously undergoing a dramatic change. The first few tracks sound much like the older stuff I've heard from this band, but the rest of the album sounds remarkably like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds from the same era (think "The Good Son" and "Henry's Dream" and you'll get a good idea). So if you're a Nick Cave fan like I am, then by all means you'll probably like this album. As for the first few tracks on this album, as well as much of their older material, a comparison to Joy Division and The Chameleons wouldn't be too far off of the mark.

I don't expect this album to garner too much attention today, especially given the fact that it was released nearly 20 years ago, but it is certainly well worth buying if you're a fan of "dark" music---not goth per se, but dark, brooding music all the same.

For those who like 80s Goth music (e.g. Joy Division, And Also the Trees, Death in June, etc.) here is a band that you should check out. While never receiving much attention in the US (largely due to distribution issues) the one album they put out with the great WaxTrax label is available here. It is surely worth purchasing just for the song "When Will it be Me"...a classic lament about fate and fortune passing one over time and time again. Other great songs on the album include "Waiting for a Friend," "Summers Die" and "I Send You My Tears." Rest assured that if you want to broaden your collection of Goth music you should buy this album.
