      4 out of 5 stars For Love/Hate & Jizzy Pearl Fans... L.A. Guns/Phil Lewis Devotees...Please Stay Away!.......2007-07-26

Phil Lewis left L.A. Guns (only to return years later) after the '94 release, "Vicious Circle." Tracii and company decided to carry on with different line-up changes, including 3 different singers over the course of 3 records. Chris Von Dahl handled vocals on THE L.A. Guns "American Hardcore," Ralph Saenz appeared on "Wasted," and Jizzy Pearl of Love/Hate sang on this release, "Shrinking Violet."

Now, it's understandable why Tracii Guns would record with 3 different singers, plus constant line-up changes, and issue them all under the moniker L.A. Guns. It's about name recognition. Which means record deals, record sales, and people actually showing up at your shows. However, as Motley Crue learned, with the talented John Corabi on their very good self-titled release, name recognition works both ways. Most people would not accept Motley Crue w/out Vince Neil on the mic and the same goes for L.A. Guns and Phil Lewis. If Phil's not on the mic, then it ain't L.A. Guns. Period. End of story.

And while I generally agree with those sentiments and agree with the reasons why, it's also quite a shame in this instance. Because this is a very good record with well-written songs, solid musicianship, and bare bones, street-wise production by former Gunner, Gilby Clarke. If they had released this under a new name and carried on with this line-up or at least issued it as a one time side-project, it might have been accepted by more hard-rock fans.

So, for all of you L.A. Guns fans, I would have to tell you to stay away from this one. Because if you're looking for Phil's voice and that classic L.A. Guns sound, you're not going to get it. However, if you're a Love/Hate or Jizzy Pearl fan (and how can you not be both), then go get this record. Jizzy's vocals are excellent and the sound is tough and aggressive. I'm willing to bet that this will end up being one of your favorite discs if you're a fan of King Jizzo and the harder-driven Sunset Strip bands (i.e. Guns n' Roses, Junkyard, Dangerous Toys, Love/Hate, etc.).

1 out of 5 stars This album stinks.......2006-08-08

Got this album and I was like what is this? This album stinks from begining to end and jizzy pearl cant sing at all on this cd. Saw them live in concert with him dont know why and it was the worst show I have ever been to he sounded even worse in concert sorry but jizzy just did not fit the band and in no way could ever replace phil. I am glad jizzy was only on one album he just didnt fit la guns style and yes the sound on this album was very poor. Thanks that phil is back now and the la guns sound like the la guns. And those people who said this album was good um what were you listing too? No longer have this album and I can see why most places dont carry it anymore as it hardly sold any copies when it came out.

4 out of 5 stars shrinking violet is great but, without phil lewis...................2005-09-19

la guns just isn't without phil lewis..................although jizzy is awsome and the guys did a great job but still i belive LA GUNS is NOT without phil lewis. thanks KELLY

2 out of 5 stars Without Phil, its just not L.A.Guns.......2005-09-19

If your an L.A.Guns fan like I am then you would be just as dissapointed as I was when I recieved this album. Without Phil there is no L.A.Guns wether you'd like to admitt it or not. In this album they tried to revert back to the days of there Self-Titled debut and leave the Heavy Metal scene that they tried on the American Hardcore album, but without Phil it just didnt work. Jizzy Pearl and the rest of the band were off-sync and the sound production was horrible, it sounded like they just recorded a few demos and crammed it into the album without any mixing or anything. I only recommend this album if your a true L.A.Guns fan like I am.

3 out of 5 stars best of the Phil-less albums.......2005-07-17

If ever an album needed a remaster, this is it. Tight musicianship and strong song writing is let down by poor production which leaves the whole album sounding cloudy. Having said that, this is a better release than American Hardcore, and Jizzy is a better replacement for Phil than Chris was. In hindsight, seeings Phil would return to the band, it probebly would have been better if the Phil-less L.A. Guns albums had been released as Tracii Guns projects, I reckon. As for the artwork, surely, even on a tight budget, they could have come up with something better than they did, pretty woeful. At the end of the day, this release isn't a bad effort, though getting Phil back for Man in the Moon and Waking the Dead(arguably their best album) was definatly the right move.
