The Definitive Black Metal Album.......2006-07-22
I did not like the album on first listen--the production quality sounded poor. (This was actually good production quality for the genre at the time.) It is now my favorite album, and I would not change the sound one bit. This sounds like ancient evil. I love the mood of it. So dark and full of despair. A sick feeling that they lost on future albums.
A landmark in black metal.......2006-05-08
This is probably one of black metal's finest bands. This album also stands as one of the best black metal albums ever made, from the haunting keyboard melodies to the incredible cover art, everything about this album is superb.

Enchanting, Cold, and Epic.......2006-12-12
In The Nightside Eclipse is one of the most quintessential black metal releases of all time (meaning that it is the type of album that defines a particular time and place). This type of music cannot be emulated and recreated nowadays without sounding like a cheap imitation. Other acts have tried to follow up with the symphonic black metal sound, but none of them have proven to be as successful as Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse. Want to hear where Dimmu Borgir single handily ripped their sound from? Look no further. To call this "trve kvlt" black metal would be an understatement; In The Nightside Eclipse is one of the greatest and most influential black metal releases of all time. Of course, it is up to the individual listeners to decide whether Emperor's later work is relevant or not, but this album is without a doubt a milestone in the history of black metal. This is the type of music that one could play if they were stranded on a cold, icy glacier. This is truly evocative of a cold Norwegian winter. And although one could say that this music is pompous and bombastic in its overall presentation, Emperor's sound works well and is a major landmark release for the black metal genre. The dismal production also adds to the music nicely. Too bad this release gave rise to various cheap imitators and cheesy black metal bands that fancy playing boring power chords over Danny Elfman inspired compositions. The Dimmu Borgirs and Cradle of Fliths of the world owe their useless and irrelevant careers to this band. This is absolutely essential to own for any black metal enthusiasts.

Quality Black Metal.......2006-08-07
Before I go on to review this, let me just say one thing: this album is not for the untrained ear. To the average music listener, this album will probably sound repetitive and the poor-quality production isn't going to help much. Actually, a large contributing factor to the sub-par production is that the entire album was recorded live at the Greighallen in Bergen, Norway, to give it a more atmospheric sound, following in the footsteps of their predecessors. Even I had a little trouble getting used to this album on the first couple listens, but the keyboard melodies really jumped out at me and the music in general is very well executed. Anyone who doesn't understand the history behind black metal probably won't appreciate this album too much, but this is a staple in the diet of any black metal fan. It really raised the bar for future melodic black metal bands with its classic combination of ambient, icy keyboard melodies, hyperactive blast-beat drumming, screeching vocals, and muddled guitars.
Other than that, there isn't much to say about it. Ihsahn's growling vocals often get lost in the muddy production, taking a backseat to the intense guitar playing of he and fellow guitarist Samoth. His keyboard ambience is definitely the highlight of the album, as it gives each song a feeling of loneliness and conjures images of icy forests like many keyboard-driven black metal albums (see Satyricon's "Nemesis Divina"), as well as providing actually melody that is sometimes lost in the music. Tchort's bass playing, as expected, cannot be heard very well, as the production cuts out different frequencies and allows for little more than the guitars to make themselves known to the listener. Faust's drumming is incredibly fast (not the fastest ever, but good enough to add an indelible sense of desperate speed to the album), but once again, it his hard to decipher amongst the pure evil that the music attempts to create. It does this very well, by the way.
Bottom line: the only reason this album didn't get five stars is because of the inevitably poor production, but that also adds to the enjoyment of the music, causing it to be one of my favorites to play when indulging in a good read. If you're a fan of classic black metal, you probably already own this; but to any metalhead that doesn't and is looking to find a quality metal album that offers purely satisfying music without the promise of superior musicianship, then this album will fit nicely into your collection. Also, if you loved this album and would like some more just like it and some even better, then check out Satyricon's "Dark Medieval Times", Dimmu Borgir's "Stormblast" (not the 2005 re-issue, mind you), and, if you're not looking for ambience, Immortal's "Battles in the North".

THE Black Metal album.......2006-08-03
This was the first black metal record I ever heard and to this day it is still my favorite. So much so that any black metal I heard after this I have found my self comparing to "Nightside". This record achieved such a brash rawness while at the same time having an incredibly eerie air about it. Few albums have achieved the genuinly creepy darkness of this album for me, from the opening of the oddly 'Mechanical'? plodding sound to the mind tearing guitars. this is also one of the few albums to use a keyboard correctly to create truly terrifying atmosphere. And what can be said about Isahns vocals? sounding truly possesed and vile. All of these layers combined add up to the measuring stick for all black metal to follow in my opinion. Truly epic and sinister, still has yet to be touched by anything after it. For the brave, this album on a walkman, hallucinogens, and a dark snowy forest..... I promise you won't forget it
Epic black metal.......2006-07-13
I've been listening to metal ever since I was old enough to comprehend the message behind a song. When I heard In the Nightside Eclipse, I was blown away. The drums, vocals, guitar, everything was absolutely epic. The music really puts you in pure darkness. Absolutely essential for any black metal fan.
